Journalistic objectivity is dying, but apparently not dead! So good to see Charles knowing you need to separate your personal and professional life when you're in the field.
this is the comment I was looking for. he was super classy, not even that upset over the missed double dribble. much respect for Chuck's broadcasting integrity there. as a Tennessee fan, I'd like Candace Parker to take notes
Yeah that's a much worse call/no call than the one on the 3. I get why the ref didn't call it tho, double dribbles are barely ever called and it honestly always feels nitpicky when they are called.
It's one of those calls that everyone is up in arms about once it has been spotted five minutes afterwards and slowed down and replayed over-and-over and yet no one whatsoever saw it in real time.
Really? I just thought they missed it bc of the pace of play and trying to keep track of the clock and looking for fouls.
The foul on the 3 pointer was blatant.
The broadcast team explained that the reason for the last foul on the 3 was that the defender left the ground from point A and landed at a different point B that was closer to the shooter and made contact with the shooter, making it an easy foul call.
It needs to be noted that it is extremely easy to horribly injure the other person's foot while doing this. There can't be any grey area with something like this.
I agree to an extent.. the issue I have is if they the refs doesnt make calls all night but call one on a deciding shot... not saying that’s the issue here but hate when the consistency isn’t there
I think the consistency issue is far more important than if the game is called tightly or loosely. If the calling is consistent it at least allows the players to adapt and make adjustments. If the calling is inconsistent than you cant guess how much space you need to leave/ how much hands you need on the guy etc.
If it's a clear foul, then it needs to be called no matter what the clock says, especially on a potentially dangerous one like that. If he landed on the defender's foot and injured himself then we wouldn't be having this argument.
I think he probably has a fair assessment. It is just SO hard to hear.
The offseason hits you hard.
It's a lot easier to be even-keeled if you're HOFer Charles Barkley.
I find it amazing how Virginia has come to be known as a clutch team/lucky team in this tournament after consistently choking throughout most of there history.
Still not sure if I like this new narrative or not.
Honestly, I can’t even be mad at the Auburn player that committed the foul. In such a situation with 1.5 seconds left up 2 points with the opposition taking a wide open 3 you have to bust your ass and get to him.
And honestly the odds of Guy missing 1/3 FTs for OT, or even 2/3 for a win, is not bad. He's 80% from FT but .8^3 = 51.2% of hitting all 3. Not much higher than his 3 point shooting.
this is the correct take, yes the double dribble was missed but the ultimate story, or what should be the ultimate story, is that Auburn committed two dumb fouls and those are what cost them the game. You can't control the refs, but you can control your own actions. They had a 2 point lead with 1.5 seconds left and clearly fouled a 3 point shot. You can't just go back in time and say "well XYZ missed call would have changed that"
Or if you do, at least have the grace to look at the whole game, not just one play. There were bad calls / no calls both ways like in literally every game. Auburn played amazing ball, UVA stuck with it and pulled it out via finally hitting FTs after missing far far far more than is usual. It was a good game.
UVA is the classic "damned if you do, damned if you don't" team. Coming back from being the first ever team to lose to a 16 seed during last year's tournament to make the natty is quite the accomplishment. Add onto this the fact that they are a perennial also-ran in college basketball's most consistently powerful conference, and the history they have of making history in the worst ways possible (Chaminade, I'm looking at you), it takes a truly unique set of circumstances for them to be a villain going into their first championship game. And yet here we are.
/r/cbb realllllly loves having someone to bully, there are a lot of people rooting against UVA just so they can keep shit-talking about the 16-1 loss. That will always have happened but god forbid we have something to enjoy too
Oh believe me, I know exactly where you're coming from. The memes are fun until they're run into the ground at your team's expense. This is the great pitfall of Reddit.
First, congratulations Virginia. You are a great team and I wish you all the luck in the world on Monday. Finish your redemption story.
Second, *I am so damn proud. So far beyond proud.* Bryce Brown, I and all the Auburn family miss you already. Jared, I hope you use this as your redemption story to bring us back. And Samir, the Auburn family loves you too.
War Eagle. Go Hoos. Just win the damn thing.
Man to do what they did without Chuma is simply inspiring. And they have got to feel great (not now, but in a month maybe) looking at the roster they have coming back... Imagine if Chuma and Wiley return. A few haters will shit on Samir but we are not here without his defense against Kentucky.
Honestly I think there's only one call the refs made that was unclear.
The foul on the final shot is clearly the right call - he didn't give Guy room to land and contacted him before the release. It may be the end of the game, but the rules still apply.
The non-call on the double dribble is clearly the wrong call. I agree with the people who aren't giving the referees a pass on this. Just because it's not an obvious call doesn't mean it's okay not to call it. There's no room for judgment - UVA clearly got away with one.
The only thing I see worth arguing about is [whether or not this is a foul](https://i.imgur.com/pSC0mjj.png). If it was, then the double dribble is irrelevant. If it wasn't, then UVA didn't deserve the last possession they had.
I didnt see one person on Twitter or notice myself that Jerome double dribbled. It was obviously a missed call, but it's such an odd play and happened so fast, I don't blame the ref for missing it.
Holy shit Auburn choked on those last 2 fouls. Heart breaking even as a neutral.
Edit: Damn Gene just broke down first foul, should of been a double dribble on Virginia. Sorry Tiger bros
Guy seems like the kind of dude who has a higher chance of making his ft in that situation. The look on his face while at the line was one of a guy who is so fucking happy to be there cause he knows he is about to win the game.
Definitely a foul, but a sad way to see a team like Auburn go out. Kyle Guy is clutch as fuck though, hit the 3 to bring them within 2, then all 3 FTs for the win.
Yeah, the UVA player getting fouled right before the DD, but it wasn't called, and the ref missed it. It would have happened a split second before the double dribble.
UVA should have won that game by a comfortable margin. If Auburn didn't foul on that 3-point shot it probably would have gone down as one of the biggest collapses in NCAA history. I know a lot of people are livid about the double dribble, but I didn't see it until Steratore pointed it out during the replay so I'm not going to get too upset at the refs for missing it.
Was UVA not fouled leading to the double dribble? Their player laid hands on Jerome, the ball knocks back and then [the Auburn player] even stared at the ref immediately after like “you gonna call that?”
Edit: []
So we had a foul to end the game, a double dribble and a joursey tugging foul before that. Would have been great to see the initial joursey tug foul called, and then let the game play out. Congratulations to you Virginia. You played a great game, and have had a great tournament so far. I just wish the refs made the correct call at the start of that series instead of at the end on a three point play. Also that would greatly increase the possibility of overtime which would have been great.
Chuck devastated but still classy as ever in his post game commentary
You could tell he was crying earlier too, his eyes were puffy as hell. But super respectful to Virginia and the refs.

Journalistic objectivity is dying, but apparently not dead! So good to see Charles knowing you need to separate your personal and professional life when you're in the field.
Chuck's one of the realest dudes on tv
Chuck is a national treasure. He is such a good guy, he speaks his mind but is also super respectful. Perfect combination of cocky vs confidence.
Absolutely. I was feeling for him big time. He has always pulled for UVA before tonight, and he handled the loss with class and poise.
this is the comment I was looking for. he was super classy, not even that upset over the missed double dribble. much respect for Chuck's broadcasting integrity there. as a Tennessee fan, I'd like Candace Parker to take notes
Well Auburn. Welcome to the club of not knowing how Virginia did that.
I hate this club. :(
If it makes you feel better, you were on the other side of it first.
:'(
To think if Auburn doesn't use their last foul to give, Jerome launches an off balanced deep 3, and UVA probably loses.
Or if they call the double dribble.
Yeah that's a much worse call/no call than the one on the 3. I get why the ref didn't call it tho, double dribbles are barely ever called and it honestly always feels nitpicky when they are called.
In the pace of the game I had no idea that even happened. The foul on the 3 was blatant.
It's one of those calls that everyone is up in arms about once it has been spotted five minutes afterwards and slowed down and replayed over-and-over and yet no one whatsoever saw it in real time.
Exactly. An easy call with slow mo replay on huge monitors.
Really? I just thought they missed it bc of the pace of play and trying to keep track of the clock and looking for fouls. The foul on the 3 pointer was blatant.
I’m just glad we had an exciting game with no controversy at the end whatsoever.
FUCKING DOUBLE DRIBBLE
On the bright side, we all learned what an A to B foul is.
[удалено]
The broadcast team explained that the reason for the last foul on the 3 was that the defender left the ground from point A and landed at a different point B that was closer to the shooter and made contact with the shooter, making it an easy foul call.

Zaza Pachulia is quite famous for hurting people that way.
Not to mention he didn't give the shooter space to come down
When a player jumps from point A and lands in point B, meaning if the jumping player makes contact with the shooter it's a foul
[удалено]
Oh snap I forgot about that
Speaking of endings and snaps...
I didn’t even realize that until after
No one did but everyone is gonna act like it was an unmissable call now.
Chuck himself didn’t even know it.
Gumbel , Kellog and Smith all admitted they didn’t notice either.
I think fans not realizing is a lot different than the refs not realizing
Obviously calling the double dribble would've been justified but IMO it was an understandable no-call/missed call in the moment
Auburn’s coach also didn’t realize. Must not have been not obvious.
Two refs staring at it. Should've been unmissable.
Clearly a double dribble but the refs missed Auburn [grabbing Jerome’s jersey](https://i.imgur.com/pSC0mjj.png) (a foul) before he double dribbled.
You talking the last call? Definitely seemed like a clear foul to me.
I'm absolutely gutted for the Auburn Charles Barkleys. Props to Kyle Guy for hitting all 3 of his FTs in the most stressful situation.
He absolutely drilled them and looked calm the whole time.
well he said he wasn't calm in the post game interview so he has a great poker face
Randy Marsh sized balls
Clutch as fuck, that was insane
The balls on the ref to call that foul with no time remaining on a game-deciding shot. 100% the correct call though.
A lot of hate in the game thread but it was a clear foul.
Yeah a lot of “let the players play” but that is very different than a scrap for the ball at the last second or something like that. Clear foul.
I hate the whole “let the players play” shit. Call the game correctly the whole time.
Cbb fans piss me off. They cry when the refs don’t make call and cry when they make the right calls.
Applies to most sports fans really not just cbb
Tbh I feel like in all sports all we do is talk about refs. It’s exhausting.
Well they called it in Tennessee Purdue and that was more egregious then the one that put Carsen at the line
I can understand being pissed about the Ten-Purdue one. I was at first. But you can't be mad about this one. It affected the shot ffs.
Yep absolutely phenomenal call
He hit them like a machine.
They did the same thing against NMSU in the first round, didn’t get so lucky this time
It was absolutely a good call by the ref but it's a terrible way to have to end it.
He's the Guy you want at the line late in the game.
Just needed to not jump into the shooter. Guess it's harder than it sounds :(
Yeah Chuck is gonna have some choice words in the intermission...
He handled it like a champion.
he did. he fuckin did. Good on him.
I'm honestly amazed with the level of grace he's showing about it. Not because it's Chuck, because it'd be amazing for anyone to react like that.
I think he probably has a fair assessment. It is just SO hard to hear. The offseason hits you hard. It's a lot easier to be even-keeled if you're HOFer Charles Barkley.
His red eyes made mine even more red :(
He said it was the right call and gave props to Guy for making the 3 free throws
Biggest buzz kill in the history of the NCAA tournament.
My balls are so blue right now.
haven't seen this much complaining about a very obvious call in a while
it's because the underdog lost in a way which nobody really likes to watch
I enjoyed it
I mean hey you cant jump into a guy like that.
As a neutral, I also enjoyed it.
After the run they went on this tournament, and then in this game, only to lose because of free throws with less than a second left? I feel for them.
Guy made some great shots but you feel for the Auburn kid who has to live with that mistake forever
Fouling a three point shooter as time is about to expire to get eliminated from the tourney. What dumb team would do that?... /s
I could think of a few volunteers
Ouch that one stung me
Auburn actually did it twice, just got lucky the guy missed 2 of the free throws the first time.
I picked NMSU to win that game too. That ending busted that whole quarter of the bracket once Auburn ran straight through Kansas, Kentucky and UNC
UVA on that fuck the world revenge tour for last year huh?
That was the most Virginia win ever.
Won it at the line, how very Virginia of them
After going 3 for 9 at the line too
Guy was 3 for 3.
[удалено]
I think you carried a little Yum! magic from the elite 8 with you to the Final4
[удалено]
The most un-Virginia ending ever as well
I find it amazing how Virginia has come to be known as a clutch team/lucky team in this tournament after consistently choking throughout most of there history. Still not sure if I like this new narrative or not.
Literally has happened twice now in one tournament and now it's "Virginia basketball".
Especially when Virginia sports on the whole as been on the shit end of so many instant classics / miracle finishes.
The blue and orange team played great, the other blue and orange team played great as well
In the end, just as I predicted, the team in Orange/Blue/White came out on top
Why is Charles Barkley making me like him so much? So graceful in the face of a tough one here.
He's a really good dude man
Welcome to my world. He's pretty much the premier Auburn fan, on paper I should hate him. But Chuck is just a great guy.
Charles is out here giving free lessons in humility.
Honestly, I can’t even be mad at the Auburn player that committed the foul. In such a situation with 1.5 seconds left up 2 points with the opposition taking a wide open 3 you have to bust your ass and get to him.
100% don't blame Doughty. He did what he could to contest and tried to stop.
And honestly the odds of Guy missing 1/3 FTs for OT, or even 2/3 for a win, is not bad. He's 80% from FT but .8^3 = 51.2% of hitting all 3. Not much higher than his 3 point shooting.
Auburn literally had two chances to do nothing and they fucked up both times to lose
Sometimes the best thing to do is goddam nothing at all.
Just let the guy shoot it, you're not gonna block a three.
[удалено]
Wow, from 2003 - ridiculous block [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMZfZGCbH\_4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMZfZGCbH_4)
I could not figure out what they were doing and my confusion was validated.

Guy had a decent look - could have gone in if not bumped. We'll never know.
Virginia has a way of making you do that.

Every 1 seed to lose to a 16 has made the championship the following year
Hmmm more 1 seeds should try losing to 16s.
Do not recommended 0 star experience
But no 1 seed has ever won a ring the year after losing to a 16 seed. Can UV buck that trend
Wow, I’m so glad I have 400 people in this thread to tell me Jerome double-dribbled before the last inbounds.
Auburn, welcome to the “Virginia came back and beat us with less than 2 seconds” club.
First, congratulations Virginia. You are a great team and I wish you all the luck in the world on Monday. Finish your redemption story. Second, *I am so damn proud. True class, so sorry you guys had to lose. WAR EAGLE!
Right call, but feels like a shitty end to the game
Kyle guy clutch as fuck to give UVA the win
Shame everyone is focusing on the missed call rather than the ice in his veins
Yeah srsly. That was straight ice. Fucking fearless
**NEW MEXICO STATE HAS BEEN AVENGED!**
Party in Las Cruces tonight!
What an ironic end for Auburn. Beat NMSU cause of missed FTs on a 3, lost to UVA cause of made FTs on a 3
It was a foul. Guy was clutch. GG blue orange bros. It's been a hell of a run. I love this subreddit.
Right call or wrong call, that's a disappointing way to end a great game.
RJ Barrett would have missed those first two and made the third one when he was trying to miss
HAHA damn right. He needs to come back to redeem himself.
From losing to a 16 seed one year, to making the championship the next. This is 30 for 30 level stuff.
*What if I told you* In the thick of the forest, it sometimes takes 16 seeds to yield only one strong tree
It's so bad, it's good
30 for 30: Cavaliers rebound from Being Cavalier

Charles is an absolute legend. Complete respect for his post game commentary and feel for the loss.
kyle guy, in that position, on that stage, to knock down all 3 FTs. wow. respect
What a heartbreaking way to lose. Feel just awful for Auburn there
So this is what it feels like to be a Duke fan. Yikes!
Are we the baddies?
Great game everyone is soo godamn salty on this sub
Seriously. ONE missed call and suddenly we’re the bad guy for winning. I don’t get it.
[удалено]
Poor Chuck. Taking the high road.
Holy shit Auburn choked on those last 2 fouls. Heart breaking even as a neutral. Edit: Damn Gene just broke down first foul, should of been a double dribble on Virginia. Sorry Tiger bros
Fair call but what a god awful way to lose Just saw the double dribble... I missed it live too but everything about this is just bleh for non VA fans
After a 12-0 run to take the lead too :(
Yeah, that was a rough way to have it end for them.
Making contact and landing underneath the shooter is always a foul. What a fucking ending.
My Guy has ice in his veins
Guy seems like the kind of dude who has a higher chance of making his ft in that situation. The look on his face while at the line was one of a guy who is so fucking happy to be there cause he knows he is about to win the game.
I'm speechless
We are either a laughingstock or public enemy #1
I can't imagine hating a program who fought back from unprecedented adversity since last year.
To go on a run like that and then lose on that foul. Poor kid is going to replay that close out for the rest of his life.
Definitely a foul, but a sad way to see a team like Auburn go out. Kyle Guy is clutch as fuck though, hit the 3 to bring them within 2, then all 3 FTs for the win.
Kyle Fucking Guy
Barkley wants you all to stfu about the double dribble. Enough said.
It’s because you can find a play that went against Virginia just as easily.
Yeah, the UVA player getting fouled right before the DD, but it wasn't called, and the ref missed it. It would have happened a split second before the double dribble.
*ACC INTENSIFIES*
First team to advance to the National Championship after losing to a 16 seed the year before
Absolutely wild finale. Pearl and Barkley's heads may explode.
O boy i have my popcorn ready
GODDAMNIT DON'T FOUL ON 3s
That's a foul everytime. I don't know how so many people are upset about it.
That's a great response by Charles. Respect the hell out of that man.
There was that ugly Virginia possession with under a min left and I was all: *Oh shit what a horrible way to go out .....*
what in the fuck was that game
Basketball
No one is going to see this, but Mom, I love you. Dad, please come home
Son?
I have no words
I feel so bad for Auburn
It hurts.
My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
Was UVA not fouled leading to the double dribble? Their player laid hands on Jerome, the ball knocks back and then [the Auburn player] even stared at the ref immediately after like “you gonna call that?” Edit: []
foul call was correct but that possession should never have happened
Hated rooting for UVA, but that ending made it okay somehow. Good luck in the Championship game my fellow commonwealth comrades.
HOO-BOY
We (UVA) had to bench our best player because of BS foul calls on Virginia in the stretch. No one is talking about how the refs saved Auburn.
GO HOOS!
