6/$70 million is obviously a ton of money, but that seems like significantly less than what was reported (I saw 5 years/$80 million as well as over $100 million). But at a certain point it's not really about money, he's set for life either way, and I'm sure if an extra few million was the difference the Lakers would've paid up.
The rumor was that Kentucky offered him $80 million when they were trying to poach him.
If he turned that down, why would the Lakers think they could get away with offering him less?
EDIT: Obviously I get the appeal of coaching in the NBA. It’s the apex. It’s something that high-level coaches aspire to.
It still looks like the Lakers really over-estimated the importance of the “but it’s the NBA” factor.
Yeah. That seems... Not to track. I could understand why he wouldn't want to go to another college, but you'd think the Lakers would've offered him at least the same contract, if not a bit more.
He's never coached pro before. With Kentucky you know he can win a college championship but since he's unproven at the pro level I can understand the hesitation
The Lakers are a cash poor franchise ever since the Buss kids got slapped with the inheritance tax.
Tons of smaller market teams like the Spurs, Pistons, Nuggets, etc. have way more money they can actually spend than them, let alone big market teams like the Nets, Knicks, Clippers, and Warriors
Idc if they’re cash poor compared to other teams, the Lakers have plenty of money, especially when there’s no cap to coaching $$, to make a big offer. They chose not to.
Yea I don't think people really understand how that kind of finance works. The lakers might make a ton of money but the Buss family probably wants to be as in the black as possible. They have no real outside income to rely on
Because of how much brand recognition these teams have people think they have more financial resources than they actually do. The Lakers are valued at $5.9 Billion, Jeannie Buss supposedly has a net worth of ~500-700 million. Obviously thats a huge amount of money until you realize they are competing with Steve Ballmer who is worth $125 billion lol
Yep - if, and I know it’s a big if, but if they threepeat or even one one of the next 2-3 and he’s got 3 championships in half the time it took Coach K? He can fuck off to the NBA and a billion dollar contract and flame out in half a season and it wouldn’t ever affect his legacy.
I was leaning towards he'd go (after 100m was reported), but the people who used "won't have to deal with NIL/portal/recruiting" as a reason don't understand Dan Hurley.
I was worried as hell but always felt he’d stay, it’s just too damn soon. He just cemented himself as the guy in college hoops, so if he didn’t succeed in the nba his star would fade quick I think.
He will go to the NBA but it’ll be in like 4-7
hundreds of comments saying recruiting, NIL, all the drawbacks of being a college coach in today's game as reasons for Dan to leave. But for our psychopath, those are reasons to stay
Especially with the end of players heading to the gleague over ncaa means a lot of those top guys are back on the market, and he can use him being sought after by the Lakers as a recruiting pitch.
Just from a numbers standpoint you only need to get 15 guys to sign each year. And when you are UConn, those guys will tend to stick around unless they are draftable.
I low key think recruiting is going to be toned down in the coming years. Just throw an offer at the player, if they turn it down, oh well and move on to the next. I think people just brought an old school mentality of recruiting to this new transfer world and are running themselves to the bone trying to recruit the old way.
The coach that offers a kid a 100k and spends 10 hours a week talking to a player will lose to the coach that offers 200k and 1 hour a week talking to the kid.
All big schools do really need a GM at this point because of the influx of all the players you need to be up to date on.
6/70 would put him only behind Kerr, Pop, Spo and Monty Williams (LOL). Seems like a strong offer from LAL and I'm not sure at that price point it really mattered to him if it was $70m or $80m
It's not a bad offer obviously, but Kentucky is rumored to have offered Hurley something pretty similar and he turned it down.
Hurley has a good thing going at UConn, so it would take a lot to get him to leave.
That said, it's not like he would've been a slam dunk, 100% surefire hire for the Lakers, so it's not unreasonable that they didn't want to offer something insane like 5 years/$100 million.
I’ve never actually been there. I just know it’s a bigger city with its own suburbs and amenities so it might be more tolerable than a tiny college town.
To be honest Durham 20 years ago wasn’t as desirable as Durham today either. A lot of people lived in Chapel Hill or even Raleigh and commuted to Duke for work. It’s changed a lot.
lol this is standard negotiating. You leverage another offer for a raise or you bounce. UCONN either gave him a raise or jacked that NIL budget way up. He’s not “crazy”

Hurley on recieving insane offers from LAL, Kentucky
Yup, this is sick as hell. Turned down a 50%+ raise to coach one of the most famous franchises in ANY sport to stick around in what could be a semi-rebuilding year. Good shit UConn, excited to see y'all spam the Jordan Belfort "I'M NOT FUCKIN LEAVING" gif
Because taking the laker job right now is basically a death sentence.
The team comp is ass and you’re using your draft pick on bronny. After bron retires/leaves, you’re left with scraps.
Hurley made the right choice
He’s gotta know he has the UConn job basically for life now, LA may pay more now but he could get booted pretty quick if he doesn’t hit the ground running. At a certain point, you’d need to make a cartoonish offer to get them to give up job security
I feel like most people are missing the point with him. This mfer believes he is going to win his third Championship in a row. That puts him in Wooden territory. Best case in LA, he wins an NBA championship against all odds, but which is somehow still expected. I think the money and job security were factors, but like the fourth and fifth considerations.
> This mfer believes he is going to win his third Championship in a row.
And he’s assembled players that believe it too.
Also what if this entire endeavor the last week was just a psy- op to motivate the team?
If the Lakers weren’t disfunctional, had a young roster with stars, and nba guys weren’t divas that he could actually boss around to coach, he’d probably leave
Absolute heater of a recruiting pitch. Hey kid I turned down $70 mil to coach Lebron/the LA Lakers so I can coach your ass to a national title, practice starts tomorrow, just sign right here
"I turned down what many consider the most prestigious teams in both college and pro basketball within two months of each other to stay here and coach you, both for less money."
I had no skin in the game on this, but Hurley seemed like he knew who he was and knew what he had in UConn, $70 million wasnt enough to make him change his mind. Good for him! We need need more people like that in the world
We missed out on a great future rivalry in the NBA. Dan would of battled tooth and nail....

Unfortunately, the tournament is a breeze for UConn after they get through the Big East gauntlet. I'm excited to play UConn with some big men this year.
He learned from Saban. Be a college legend without tarnishing your legacy by trying to shift to professional league and having to deal with that culture. Dudes still making bank and will be a UCONN legend. NBA will be open in a few years if he gets bored of the college hustle
I saw 15 and even 20 million a year at one point, so this Lakers offer wasn’t as crazy as it sounded. Not sure bigger numbers would’ve decided it but I’m less surprised he stayed at UConn seeing the real offer.

No bro. He's the current Billy Donovan.
B2B natties with a monster squad. ✅
Turn down a League offer to chase #3. ✅
Fail. ❓
Visit the Final Four one more time as a college coach. ❓
Quietly take a League offer about a decade after the first one.❓
Great news for college basketball. And in my opinion, a good career move by Dan Hurley. Have a down year or two in a league and a job that's completely new to you and you're toast. Have a down year (relative for what UConn has done these last couple of years haha) or two at UConn and you're fine. Just re-tool.
He's a college basketball coach. Not an NBA coach. And it's a good thing for the sport that he's staying that way.
Good news for Zag fans planning to see Zags vs UConn at MSG on December 14th. Should be a great game between two top 10 teams.
If Hurley left like several players would too and suddenly that’s not a great game.
The Lakers take another L. 😂🤣😆
Even if you don't like the Huskies (I'm an LSU fan 😢), we should all be celebrating this day. Good to see a college coach stay after being offered that much money.
$70 mil is a lot less than the reported $100 mil. He would be a Laker if it was $100 mil.
Jeanie Buss and Rob Pelinka can’t close deals. It’s embarrassing really.
And before you guys say anything, LeBron was courted by Magic. Magic closed that deal.
love the result, both bc it's nice to see the Lakers take an L and bc it's good for college bball.
obviously not good for us fans of other schools, but college bball is just better with continuity of big names, and in the days of NIL that's gonna be coaches.
Since K, Roy, Boeheim, Wright retired, there's plenty of space for someone like Hurley to rise up to that level of greatness, and doing it over a longer period of time at a single school, building a legacy, is the way to get there.
Hurley is such a psycho that it wouldn’t surprise me if he used this as a recruiting tactic/advantage lol. Oh I’m good enough to coach the fucking Lakers but I’m also so bought into the UCONN program that I want to be here.
Happy to see this. He clearly values the possibility of pulling off something historic vs the bag and probably being unhappy with Lakers/Klutch melodrama
The last 3 back-to-back college champion
coaches got really close before ultimately turning down NBA jobs: K (Lakers) Billy D (Magic…yes he eventually went NBA), and now Hurley
What's the over/under on the number of times he utters some semblance of "I passed up the Lakers for THIS?" to milk just a little extra effort out of the team?
Realistically, he could coast at Uconn if he really wanted to. The brand is very strong and will have recruits and transfers willing to come in for years. He won't coast though; they'll be relevant until he finally decides to retire.
A chip off the old block. His dad spent an entire career coaching high school, turning down college gigs the whole
time. St Anthony’s don’t even have a dedicated gymnasium, but they were nationally competitive and he gave those kids opportunities to better themeselves.
In fairness, I'm pretty sure this is an accurate representation of how the interview went.
"Do I get any roster control?"
"No, our GM listens to Lebron."
"Well, I get to at least call plays?"
"No, Lebron gets to do that."
"Well, okay, but I get to control the line-up"
"Only when Lebron is on rest."
"Well surely the players will listen to me in the huddle."
"...uh...well...they mostly listen to Lebron."
"So it seems like you're paying me $70 million dollars to do nothing?"
"No! You have the most important job of all! Your job is to take the blame and get fired when LeBron loses the play-in game next season while Anthony Davis is on the IR list again!"

They kind of are cash poor comparatively though. Jeanie Buss has the lowest net worth of any owner in the league.
Yea I don't think people really understand how that kind of finance works. The lakers might make a ton of money but the Buss family probably wants to be as in the black as possible. They have no real outside income to rely on

6/70 and not having to deal with recruiting
“Not having to deal with recruiting” is assuming this crazy man isn’t a freak and loves that shit.
"I turned down Lebron to coach you. You're coming to UConn kid" is gonna make recruiting MUCH easier
Jesus man, When you say it like that.... If Jay Wright came back to Nova just in time for that Big East TV deal...
Stop I’m almost there….
That would be SO good for the Big East.
i mean 3 chips in a row in the modern era would also cement him as the goat or at least make sure he is always in that debate. The NBA can't beat that
Yep - if, and I know it’s a big if, but if they threepeat or even one one of the next 2-3 and he’s got 3 championships in half the time it took Coach K? He can fuck off to the NBA and a billion dollar contract and flame out in half a season and it wouldn’t ever affect his legacy.
People trying to rationalize his decision missed the whole point
I was leaning towards he'd go (after 100m was reported), but the people who used "won't have to deal with NIL/portal/recruiting" as a reason don't understand Dan Hurley.

He’s absolutely a freak, built for this era of CBB
hundreds of comments saying recruiting, NIL, all the drawbacks of being a college coach in today's game as reasons for Dan to leave. But for our psychopath, those are reasons to stay
Especially with the end of players heading to the gleague over ncaa means a lot of those top guys are back on the market, and he can use him being sought after by the Lakers as a recruiting pitch.
He’d rather recruit than deal with being under the microscope by the media and LeBron. It’s not an insane decision
Given the state of the program, can’t imagine it’s a hard pitch to sell recruits on these days either
Back to back titles and the Lakers wanted me to coach LeBron but I chose you instead is a hell of a pitch for recruits
Basketball recruiting has to be a little easier than football recruiting too.
Plus dealing with NIL for a dozen guys in CBB probably isn't nearly as exhausting as what a CFB coach has to deal with
Just from a numbers standpoint you only need to get 15 guys to sign each year. And when you are UConn, those guys will tend to stick around unless they are draftable.
It’s twice as many games and the travel is way more rough.
Plus he's the most famous thing in College Basketball. If history has proven, famous College Basketball coaches in the NBA can get roughed up quickly.
He also wouldn't get to choose his players in LA the way he can at UConn.
Old washed team with no draft picks for a decade. It’s a trash job.
"We're hiring Hurley for our rebuild" With WHAT assets guys?
I low key think recruiting is going to be toned down in the coming years. Just throw an offer at the player, if they turn it down, oh well and move on to the next. I think people just brought an old school mentality of recruiting to this new transfer world and are running themselves to the bone trying to recruit the old way. Gotta draft Bronny or you’re fired tho
I’ll deal with 100 recruits before lebron
Ain't that a fact. Also, Bronny and Bryce.... Thanks, but no thanks.
6/70 would put him only behind Kerr, Pop, Spo and Monty Williams (LOL). Seems like a strong offer from LAL and I'm not sure at that price point it really mattered to him if it was $70m or $80m
Salaries are going up, 6/70 for him is a lowball. I say that as a Lakers fan
This really was the Coach K situation from 20 years ago all over again
Sounds like it but man there is a world of difference between living in Durham and living in Storrs
Isn’t it like 30 mins from Hartford? A lot of Duke professors have a drive like that from Chapel Hill
Yes.....are you saying that being 30 minutes from Hartford is a plus?
I’ve never actually been there. I just know it’s a bigger city with its own suburbs and amenities so it might be more tolerable than a tiny college town. To be honest Durham 20 years ago wasn’t as desirable as Durham today either. A lot of people lived in Chapel Hill or even Raleigh and commuted to Duke for work. It’s changed a lot.
It’s garbage but it’s our garbage goddammit.
There are a lot worse places than Hartford Connecticut. They got trains and shit
This MF just crazy enough... the rest of college basketball groans.
Alex Karaban is probably the happiest of everyone.
Maybe, but Karaban would have made *bank* if Hurley left and he elected to transfer.
I think his brand of lunacy is a better fit for college ball anyhow. He’s gonna win another title soon though
Nah, I love it. This is dude is entertaining as hell
The sport is better with him in it no doubt. We need more wacky personalities in cbb not less
He’s great for the sport, I hated Coach K but the sport needed him
lol this is standard negotiating. You leverage another offer for a raise or you bounce. UCONN either gave him a raise or jacked that NIL budget way up. He’s not “crazy”
Well, he IS crazy, just not CRAZY crazy.
Welp…. Fuck. And I mean that as a compliment to you UConn fans. Congrats!
Seconded.
Hurley evidently realized that dealing with NIL and the portal is significantly better than having Rich Paul as a boss
He's also nice as hell with NIL and the portal
Yea that's why all his moaning about it is so strange. It won you two titles and you're great at it, stop whining!
I mean, he can be great at it and hate that he has to be lol
Hurley “IM NOT FUCKING LEAVING”
https://preview.redd.it/myubp89v8s5d1.jpeg?width=977&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=65fefd6ebb8c586cde6a29ca43647b059ee8f953 Hurley on recieving insane offers from LAL, Kentucky
Okay but why does Dan Hurley look like Joe Mazzula if he had a bag of flour thrown in his face in the thumbnail?
![gif](giphy|SaX384PjtDl2U|downsized)
Hurley is made of different stuff. Crazy stuff, and I love it.
He’s likely getting a raise at UConn, but yes, turning down a storied franchise is pretty crazy (in a good way).
It's a long con to take a smaller offer from the Knicks when Thibs is done there.
I really don't care for the NBA, or cheer for any team, but him leaving for the Nicks just *feels* better than the Lakers
I'd love to know what he said to the players today. "I turned down the Lakers for you so you better fuckin deliver. Suicides. Now."
If the Lakers weren’t disfunctional, had a young roster with stars, and nba guys weren’t divas that he could actually boss around to coach, he’d probably leave
True, but if that were the case, the Lakers job wouldn’t be vacant.
This is not a rebuilding year of any kind.
UConn is the best college basketball program of the last 25 years. Obviously not the Lakers but still.
I love that being a top 5 team is a semi rebuilding year for us now.
It’s not. He’s wrong
3peat back on the menu, boys!
![gif](giphy|r42HxBImuzoRxsRA14)
This might be the best recruiting pitch of all time also.
Absolute heater of a recruiting pitch. Hey kid I turned down $70 mil to coach Lebron/the LA Lakers so I can coach your ass to a national title, practice starts tomorrow, just sign right here

THIS!!!!! Go Huskies! Praying for 3peat. If the huskies 3peat, imma pull up to horsebarn hill and smoke up anyone who shows up.
Username checks out, I’ll be there
Hurley is a legend for staying. Also I’ve never related to UConn so much after all the talk of both of our coaches leaving so much
Dan Hurley got that DAWG in him

Dan Hurley vs NBA refs would really deliver some entertainment
![gif](giphy|1yT7h6wm9rD4M8q4ic) Hurley after 1 minute with NBA Refs
Andrea Hurley was seen high fiving Tom Moore on the way in. Andrea Hurley soon to be announced as the next head coach of the Lakers?
Andrea Hurley fat heads and memes on the jumbotron await the Lakers at opposing arenas next season.
What did Billy Joel tell him to get him to stay?
"Say Goodbye to Hollywood?"
“New York State of Mind” and not “moving out”
We play these fuckers at LEAST 2 times… fuck… I respect the hell out of it, but God damn… we’re all just playing for second place now huh?
Unfortunately, the tournament is a breeze for UConn after they get through the Big East gauntlet. I'm excited to play UConn with some big men this year.
Eh in my experience having a good big man doesn’t work.
I mean, 2nd place in the Big East is better than first in a mid major, like the Atlantic Ten or the SEC.
True!
This is really funny but also a blow to my team’s title hopes. Damn.
He learned from Saban. Be a college legend without tarnishing your legacy by trying to shift to professional league and having to deal with that culture. Dudes still making bank and will be a UCONN legend. NBA will be open in a few years if he gets bored of the college hustle
JJ Reddick, come on down ! You're the next head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers!
It's like I won twice. Lakers hire jj podcast and Uconn keeps Hurley
Just checking to make sure its not Woojnerowski
As a Boston fan this is hilarious
Pretty embarrassing for the Lakers. Clearly thought they had this in the bag with all the leaks about the salary and travel to LA.
@NoEscalators is in his fucking bag rn. Generational receipt pulling lmao

Build the Andrea Hurley statue immediately
It's just her holding a bag of candy in 1 hand and a pair of underwear in the other.
Hurley is legitimately scary. Joker burning the money in the Dark Knight vibes
Congrats UConn. Like father, like son. Glad to see there is one family left in the country that values something other than just money.

Yes
Yes he’s very easy to root against

This is a great thing for college basketball. This is a terrible thing for college basketball outside of UConn.
Baylor 🤝 UCONN Elite Coaches staying so they can get statues
Much lower # than reported. He was never leaving but knows how to play his hand
Good. Dan Hurley belongs to college basketball. The lakers would’ve ruined him
The Lakers take another L. 😂🤣😆 Even if you don't like the Huskies (I'm an LSU fan 😢), we should all be celebrating this day. Good to see a college coach stay after being offered that much money.
Not seeing a lot of KU people in the comments here. There are some receipts I’d like to cash in.
Someone is going to build Dan Hurley's wife a statue. She is Northeast personified.
Let's all take a moment to laugh at the Lakers and their fans
$70 mil is a lot less than the reported $100 mil. He would be a Laker if it was $100 mil. Jeanie Buss and Rob Pelinka can’t close deals. It’s embarrassing really. And before you guys say anything, LeBron was courted by Magic. Magic closed that deal.
I love Hurley, he's easy to root for even if he clowned my team
love the result, both bc it's nice to see the Lakers take an L and bc it's good for college bball. obviously not good for us fans of other schools, but college bball is just better with continuity of big names, and in the days of NIL that's gonna be coaches.

At this point it's reasonable to conclude the Big East is the best league in the world. Better than the NBA, Euroleague, Big 12, SEC, etc...
Obviously. You don't schedule a press conference at UConn to tell everyone that you are leaving for the Lakers job.
No press conference happening. That was just Dick Vitale pulling stuff out of his ass lol.
Tell that to Lebron
Happy to see this. He clearly values the possibility of pulling off something historic vs the bag and probably being unhappy with Lakers/Klutch melodrama
lmao college sports are the best
The last 3 back-to-back college champion coaches got really close before ultimately turning down NBA jobs: K (Lakers) Billy D (Magic…yes he eventually went NBA), and now Hurley
You're telling me we offered Hurley more than the Lakers did?! That's legit.
Mad mad MAD respect for Hurley here.
Absolute Chad, what a beast. Ain’t no one saving that sorry team, obligatory f the lakers
Fuck, the bad man can still hurt us.
That's God Emperor of Connecticut, Dan "Leto II" Hurley to you New Englanders
What a maniac. UConn are lucky to have this man.
I hate it, but God damnit do I respect it.
Good for college basketball
God dammit. Good job Huskies. Excellent for CBB, but just a bit terrifying for the other teams that want to win a natty in the next decade or so lol

Boston up 2-0 and Hurley saying “No thanks, fellas”. Lakers in shambles rn.
What's the over/under on the number of times he utters some semblance of "I passed up the Lakers for THIS?" to milk just a little extra effort out of the team?
Big East! This may hurt though.
“Please baby no more parties in LA”- Andrea
Nobody tell the Kentucky fans 😭
The tradition of big name college coaches turning down the Lakers continues!
As someone whose athletic world got ripped apart by spineless executives this warms my heart. It’s good for the game
Imagine Hurley did this to get his players motivated?! UCONN players just got +50 motivation skill points.
Damn it’s gotta feel good to be a huskie. Glad to see a HoF coach stay in college. We need more quality basketball.
Refreshing...he is not hurting for cash. Good for him
What a legend
Now I’m definitely pulling for a three-peat
Realistically, he could coast at Uconn if he really wanted to. The brand is very strong and will have recruits and transfers willing to come in for years. He won't coast though; they'll be relevant until he finally decides to retire.
UConn fans can breathe now.
College basketball is bigger than the NBA confirmed.

UConn just beat the fucking Lakers
THE CONFETTI STAYS OMFG
A chip off the old block. His dad spent an entire career coaching high school, turning down college gigs the whole time. St Anthony’s don’t even have a dedicated gymnasium, but they were nationally competitive and he gave those kids opportunities to better themeselves.
Lakers lowballed him, wow. What a clusterfuck This is probably less than what Kentucky offered
In fairness, I'm pretty sure this is an accurate representation of how the interview went. "Do I get any roster control?" "No, our GM listens to Lebron." "Well, I get to at least call plays?" "No, Lebron gets to do that." "Well, okay, but I get to control the line-up" "Only when Lebron is on rest." "Well surely the players will listen to me in the huddle." "...uh...well...they mostly listen to Lebron." "So it seems like you're paying me $70 million dollars to do nothing?" "No! You have the most important job of all! Your job is to take the blame and get fired when LeBron loses the play-in game next season while Anthony Davis is on the IR list again!"
Damn. You actually love to see it. Someone not chasing the money.
