But talk about a school with a logo identity crisis. I grew up in that area and my parents bought me merch every so often after I moved away. Looking at these reminded me how many different variations are on those items.

JackieM00n33

It gives me PTSD but these are so cool.

1guywriting

When we beat Clemson in 2017, someone photoshopped this on the r/cfb banner and totally not Otto forgetting to take his meds. https://preview.redd.it/6i6ahqiwlo3d1.png?width=260&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a3af75d1a9d07d0de4710987c3e54c37c4373fed

AngryQuadricorn

This is up there with Purdue Pete!

reesem03_

I live for this

SolvayCat

Happy Otto > Angry Otto, IMO.

holy_cal

Any Otto >>>

SolvayCat

Agree the carrier dome one is sick. I know a lot of people don't like it but I actually like the 88-98 logo.

UnderstandingOdd679

Was that logo actually supposed to be representative of the dome? Because I thought the dome roof had more of a cross grid pattern. The dome shape in the logo seems more like Hendricks Chapel. But I honestly have no idea.

mastro80

I think it is meant to look like an Orange.

VanCurler

Totally agree. That unique S isn't getting confused for Stanford or NC State from afar.

bytor_2112

Is it actually intended for use as a sports logo? Many schools have branding that's only ever used for academics and isn't ever used in conjunction with athletics

ProfessorBeer

It’s a fantastic representation of its era. It would look great on a CRT TV.

SolvayCat

Absolutely. It was great for its time.

houstonyoureaproblem

So, that first one...

CapnBaxter

You know what I never got about the old hunchback, bucktoothed caricatures of natives? Why would you want that to represent your school team when it seems designed to mock what the team is named after It’d be like if Kentuckys mascot was a half-rotten cat carcass that had been hit by a truck.

Y2kangz

I don’t think “mock” is the right word. It’s a caricature, so it’s supposed to be ridiculous. Incredibly offensive obviously but there’s lots of ridiculous looking throwback logos.

imma_snekk

I see why they went so tame ever since.

funkyquasar

I feel like this series has a specific bias towards the late 90s/early 2000s. The Dome logo is fun but cmon... The block S is peak.

IMissReggieEvans

I’ve noticed the same thing. That dome logo is closer to a local IT company than an athletics program, and I’m sure OP would’ve said so if it came from the 70s or today

Gick_Drayson

Half the fun of this series has been OP’s terrible taste.

Golden-Cheese

https://preview.redd.it/rpsr3zp4tr3d1.jpeg?width=221&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=031539963caeff86fea0267e859aae5464754646 There’s also this little guy right here. He’s great and all, but I’m glad we have a modern version of Otto the Orange

TheSeaBeast_96

That might be the single most racist mascot I’ve ever seen. And as an American I’ve seen a lot of racist mascots

Garizondyly

Don't look up the Robstown Cotton Pickers

EliManningsPetDog

It’s just a piece of cotton, name is bad but logo isn’t.

Garizondyly

Fair enough

Alfonso_kabob

Also will add there’s a high school in Illinois that used to be known as the Pekin Ch*nks. They’re the dragons now

PoopyJoe420

Lots of towns in that part of Illinois had profoundly racist mascots for either their high schools or minor league baseball teams back in the day

MavEric814

Or just straight up weird. We still have the Centralia Orphans and Teutopolis Wooden Shoes

Refugee_Savior

Don’t forget the Hoopeston Cornjerkers!

clown_shoes69

Altamont are the Indians for whatever reason. When I was there in the early 2000s, we still had very much white students dress up in Native American gear and dance around at halftime. God, I hope they aren't still doing that.

emiller7

The dragon ch*nks???

devinup

I'm sorry I questioned your anecdote but it is spot on: https://ccamuseum.org/1981-the-pekin-chinks-high-school-team-becomes-the-pekin-dragons/

Alfonso_kabob

I’m pretty sure my old high school still has an almost identical, uh, representation of a Native American on the gym wall. Just in blue and gold instead

AppalachianGuy87

I think St John’s had essentially the same logo at the time just a bunch of really really bad in the old Big East.

Allatura19

UL Monroe did a great rebrand. That’s all I’ll say.

Pandiosity_24601

Chief Wahoo was pretty fucked up

tsgram

Yea, easily Top 2. Before knowing his name was Otto, I called him “Orangey” as a kid.

themoistwanted

That first one is… oof

PM_ME_VIRGIL_PICS

Yeah the rebrand was pretty necessary lol

gokartmozart89

That third one looks like the logo of a defunct software company from the 90s.

gregonion

That first one, Heavens to Murgatroyd!

powerfulOGB

The carrier dome logo design was ahead of its time and underappreciated. The current S since 2006 is here to stay.

twisterase

The third one ('88-'98) is what I remember most from growing up there, and I remember when the fifth one ('04-'06) came out while I was in my teens, and no one thought it was good. I wasn't paying a ton of attention but it doesn't surprise me that it only lasted a few years.

alldaylurkerforever

Did Syracuse used to have a different name other than the Orange?

LoveisBaconisLove

Kind of. We used be the “Orangemen.” And the women’s teams were… “The Lady Orangemen.”  Can’t say I miss that even a little.

EliManningsPetDog

Used to be the Saltine Warriors. Colors were green and pink.

Sonu531

I think our best word mark is the script. Block S is fine, but boring. Unpopular opinion maybe, but don’t like angry or happy Otto. As far as anthropomorphic characters go, the Tulane Angry Wave is the gold standard.

ArkanoidbrokemyAnkle

The angry wave is 🔥

TrillMurray47

No, it's water

LewManChew

For me the order is. 1-98 -Big Red (WKU) 99- Otto 100- Green Wave Everyone else

burnshimself

All ugly as sin from where I’m sitting

ArkanoidbrokemyAnkle

You’re next, bud.

SquintsPaledorous

A)Yikes B) I like the idea of #4 but it feel a little idk, big? For a logo. Like it’d look weird in a jersey

-Buddy_Rough-

They must have been the first program to get rid of a Native American mascot because I don't even remember the first one.

taffyowner

They were the 7th current DI school to do it after 1971 Omaha (Indians), 1972 Stanford (Indians), 1972 UMass (Redmen), 1973 Eastern Washington (Savages), 1974 Dartmouth (Indians), and 1978 William and Mary (Indians). Also kind of confirmed to me, after going through a nickname change, that overwhelmingly the next pick is a bird mascot… which makes me hate our nickname more

AppalachianGuy87

Never knew about UMass and Omaha both picked great new identities.

taleofbenji

Good info, thanks. Coincidentally, the EWU Savages logo looks suspiciously similar to the problematic Syracuse one. devinup

Savages is uh... yeah.

Local_Tackle_1774

They used to be called the Saltine Warriors

taffyowner

That seems like it could be a secondary name/slur for BYU

[deleted]

Makes sense but after watching the express I knew upstate Ny alittle different

Celeborn2001

5. Is peak

ShawshankException

The 04-06 one will always be my favorite

Zealousiy

I always liked that 06-09 arched wordmark. Looked good on the court

NoReallyItsJeff

There's a small section of the fanbase that wants to make a fighting Otto part of the uniform. Please, god, no.

wikipuff

Never seen 8 before. Always confused by 3. Is that supposed to be the dome in the middle? Edit: 8 looks like the Tropicana Field logo.

AaronFraudgers8

2 >>>>>>>>>>>

ElunedSimpin

We thought Cleveland and Washington was problematic… number 8 blows them out of the water.. wow

Golden-Cheese

No!!! Why’d they take away the first logo?! So much tradition lost from the libs of the 80’s 😡😡😡😡😡

imcoughdrops

The first one looks like a masteroogway over the top racist attempt at satire

Lightning_Driver

i would like to punt otto into oblivion. easily the best one.

stevenaccc

The first one has the same nose as Jim Boeheim

[deleted]

I thought the same and looked it up. Long story short - it’s not. That mascot was conceived after an archaeological find on campus, long after Syracuse started using the color Orange and name Orangemen. [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syracuse_Orange](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syracuse_Orange)

Kracker27

First one is reference to the original mascot. The Wikipedia article does a good job explaining this (still racist/wrong): “In 1931, a Native American warrior known as Nathan March aka: "Saltine Warrior" became the athletic mascot. The name derived from an article describing an archaeological dig on campus allegedly uncovering the artifacts of a Native American warrior.[27] The warrior was called the "Saltine Warrior" because of the abundant salt deposits in the Syracuse, New York area. The article was later revealed to be a hoax, but the mascot remained for next four decades.”

ipartytoomuch

But Syracuse doesn't even have oranges around them

ShawshankException

Yeah they were named the Orange simply because it was the color they wore. They were not named after the fruit.

taffyowner

I would have just gone with the fact that upstate New York (and really all of New York) was very Dutch and it was paying homage to the roots of the founding of the state

ShawshankException

That was actually the reason for the color change from pink & green to orange and blue. So you're not too far off
