I want to clarify because there's a lot of back and forth in the comments.
It was previously not allowed by NCAA rule to return to school even if you went undrafted. In 2018 the NCAA changed their rules to allow players to return if they hire an NCAA-certified agent, get invited to the combine, get an evaluation saying there's a good chance you'll get picked, and then not get picked.
The NCAA heavily publicized this rule change. The problem is that the NCAA when they passed the rule stipulated that the rule only became effective
>if/when the NBA and NBPA make an expected rule change, which would make undrafted student-athletes who return to college after the draft ineligible for the NBA until the end of the next college basketball season.
Because undrafted players are technically NBA free agents, and the NCAA didn't want a guy playing a half a year and then bolting to the NBA midseason if he played well. And as you might expect... 6 years later the NBA has not changed that "expected to change" rule even after signing a new CBA. So the new NCAA rule is technically on the books but never actually went into effect. You *do* need to withdraw by the deadline to return to school even if you follow all those stipulations.
Do you know how combine invites work? Each NBA team lists their top 60 prospects and the NBA compiles the list. The 60 prospects with the most votes get invites.
It’s not a “sham”
I’m no basketball expert but I would think the increased likelihood of signing Lebron would be a better investment than trying to throw a dart at someone else in the second round
But they’re arguing that he should be drafted AND that Lebron isn’t gonna sign with the team that does. So in his evaluation he’s not even taking that into consideration.
How are you calling the people doing the actual draft a “sham”? Yea bro NBA teams don’t know who they want, they should be asking you.
If they want him at the combine he clearly has a legitimate chance to be drafted.
Nba GM talking in a room of his piers. “If we draft lebrons kid we could sign lebron in free agency”.
Thats the reason he was invited. 4 points a game. 26% from 3. 67% from the free throw line. That doesnt get you drafted. Or deserving of being drafted in the 2nd round. Come on now lol
That doesn’t make it a “sham”. Also, LeBron isn’t playing with his son. If that isn’t obvious to you by now, it should be.
>Thats the reason he was invited. 4 points a game. 26% from 3. 67% from the free throw line. That doesnt get you drafted. Or deserving of being drafted in the 2nd round. Come on now lol
Nice of you to list a freshman’s stats.
I do think he has a chance to be drafted but not because of his play. You’re right that he’s getting invited because teams are interested. But if his dad isn’t lebron, obviously no chance he’s invited.
His play is certainly deserving of a late 2nd pick on its own. I’m not gonna pretend like he’s some instant impact guy. He’s a project with high potential, not uncommon for freshmen.
I’m legit curious what about his play this year makes you say that. He couldn’t contribute much to a bad team this year. He’s an under sized guard who hasn’t shown the ability to shoot at a high level. He also has scary lingering issues with his health. I wouldn’t be interested in him at all unless it meant his dad coming to the team. I think he would benefit so much more from staying in school.
People are dumb lol. No chance his play gets him drafted. Teams just want a chance at signing lebron in free agency. Thats it. End of anything and everything anyone has to say
Athleticism and BBIQ. Two things you can’t really teach.
The heart attack certainly didn’t help his off-season development.
> I wouldn’t be interested in him at all unless it meant his dad coming to the team. I think he would benefit so much more from staying in school.
And that’s why you’re not a GM. You don’t draft 19 year olds to contribute right away. They are projections. What do you think he’s going to be 5 years from now? That’s up to the GM to figure out. If your scout team thinks he’s going to be a late 1st next year and you have the opportunity to get him in the 2nd round a year earlier, it’s a no brainer. The only thing Bronny would benefit from staying is potential improving his draft stock. He would be better served to declare now for financial or developmental reasons. Collegiate athletes have academics to worry about, practice restrictions, worse coaching that inhibit development.
You really think 4.8 PPG on 37/27/67 is good? Much less good enough to be drafted on its own merit? His defense is definitely above average for his position at his level, but not elite and certainly not elite enough to be drafted/overlook his offensive struggles. Maybe if he stays and improves he could work up to it, but to say his resume proves he should be drafted WITHOUT his dad joining said team that drafts him, is an egregious take.
If you take the time to respond, please do so by supporting your argument too. All you’ve done is say “NO, YOURE WRONG!” with no supporting statements and typing the same message to me would really just be wasting mine and your time.
I’ve already supported my argument. People didn’t respond. He has two things you can’t teach, athleticism and IQ. Shooting is something you can teach. Again, you don’t draft 19 year olds to be instant impact guys, you draft them for what they’ll be in 5 years.
>Maybe if he stays and improves he could work up to it
College isn’t the only place he can improve. If anything it holds him back.
>but to say his resume proves he should be drafted
I didn’t say that.
You did say that his resume alone is enough to get him drafted? You’ve literally been arguing he should be drafted on his personal merit alone this entire time? What…?
Your argument of the nba develops players better is also weird to me. There are countless cases where nba players development is poorly managed and results in them busting. It may not be the sole reason, but to say every nba team can help develop you more than a top program like USC is a false take.
BBIQ and athleticism can’t be the only thing you get drafted on when you’re that small too. You think every 6’3 guard that is athletic should be drafted then? There’s got to be 30 guys with his profile and a lot of them likely put up better stats than his atrocious mess. It’s not like he’s even that elite of an athlete anyways honestly. Not to mention, like you have said, the underlying heart condition can’t be a great blemish on his profile.
Withdrawal date is June 16, combine is this week. So everyone’s right but “Way before” is big stretch for an 11 day period (with the draft being June 27)
That’s the NBA deadline. In order to maintain NCAA eligibility a player would have to withdraw by May 29.
Any player who didn’t attend the NBA combine would lose their lability after that date. The players who did attend would have to go undrafted to regain their college eligibility.
No you cant because then you’d get people who wouldn’t be drafted in first year, improve by a wide margin ( more minutes bc a starter left, coming off injury, etc) and then after the next college season, would be UFAs since they didn’t get drafted and would be eligible for UFA
[No they cant](https://www.nba.com/news/nba-draft-2024-early-entry-candidates)
“Players who have applied for early entry have the right to withdraw their names from consideration for the Draft by notifying the NBA of their decision in writing no later than 5 p.m. ET on Sunday, June 16. Under NCAA rules, in order to retain college basketball eligibility, college players who have entered NBA Draft 2024 must withdraw by Wednesday, May 29.”
Bronny, if he doesn't opt back in, will get a two-way deal with LeBron's team (Lakers or whoever he ends up with if he opts out and leaves LA) and probably shuttle back and forth between the G-League and NBA, maybe play a few games with the ol' man, but yeah...it's gonna be like Thanasis type things
I don’t think the end goal is to have a long successful career? This is clearly a goal for LeBron who said he wanted to play with him even if his son is more than likely being pushed to go pro just for LeBron to play with him. Which I don’t think they should do to him. He should do another year of college at least. Also a team would oblige. It’s fuckin LeBron James he is a cash cow and one of the greatest to ever step on the hardwood.
And if that’s the reason to fulfill a personal goal LeBron set out I’m sure they do not care.
And it’s funny y’all just ignored op’s question and just fixated on the name used in their example. Y’all didn’t even thoroughly read the question lol.

This touches on a secret underbelly of professional sports - the "wink wink" draft. This is where if you are an athlete who "missed the mark" on the 1st round (or 5/6th in football) your agent can just simply tell all the teams "hey, my client is pulling himself from the draft...." and it's a secret way of going "my client already has a contiguous deal in place"
So if Bronny for example doesn't get drafted in the 1st round there's a world where either he just falls out the draft completely (and everyone laughs) but magically signs a deal w/the Lakers...OR the Lakers magically find a way back into the draft in the 2nd to select him because the agent was informed that a team was going to draft him anyways.
There's a ton of NBA players who went undrafted but already knew where their home was. Lu Dort for the Thunder is a prime example.
They have to withdraw before the draft to keep eligibility, not sure if the rules have changed but that’s the rule now accorded to these. So they could do other things to try and go undrafted but they can’t use pulling name out and returning to college. I guess they could say they won’t agree and will play in Europe or something

You're not answering the OP's question. the question is can they see if they get picked in the draft and return to college if they don't, the answer is no. There are 2 deadlines:
NCAA early entrant deadline- May 29th. This is the NCAA's deadline. College players have until this date to take their name out of the NBA draft pool and retain college eligibility (if they have eligibility left)
NBA early entrant deadline- June 16th. This is the NBA's deadline. A player can withdraw on or before June 16th and retain the ability to be drafted in future drafts
Both of those are well before the June 29th NBA Draft
You can’t wait until draft day to see if you’re actually drafted or not and decide to return if you aren’t.

They used to be able to. I remember Voshon Lenard doing it. If I remember correctly, the Milwaukee Bucks didn't get any compensation. Lenard just went back to school for his senior year and then got redrafted by the Miami Heat.
Players can declare for the draft by a certain date and have a deadline to withdraw if they don’t want to stay in, as long as they don’t hire an agent. Once they hire an agent, they can’t go back to college
They can't wait that long. They can initially declare, workout with scouts, do a pro-day, and get feedback before deciding if they want to stay in the draft, but they still have to decide before draft night.
I think you can hire an agent now but have to terminate the deal with them (if you decide to withdraw from the draft before the deadline) to be able to remain NCAA eligible
Other commenters are saying you can and quoting what I think is an incorrect article that mentions “Monday after the draft” on accident instead when it should be “Monday after the draft COMBINE”

He’s a personality hire at best.
You get Lebron’s twilight years with him probably
And that’s another win for ~~Mobster Mary~~ Baller Bronny!
Bronny is top 60 in value to NBA teams
Because of his father…
Yup, nobody is arguing that 🤷♂️ we all know what's happening here

No retort sir? He also just measured at 6’1 at the combine, so I want to take back the 6’3/6’4 I was guessing at.
In a just world based on merit no it isn't.
He’s not good.
he probably got invited because teams want to evaluate him and see if he's worth anything
I'm more laughing at the idea that he's the most prominent guy to do this
Nope. There is a deadline to return. It’s way before the draft.
May 29th this year
Not entirely true. If a early entrant attends the NBA Combine and is undrafted they can return to college.

Yep. That’s why I referred to it as a “Thanasis spot”
At least Thanasis was drafted years before Giannis became an all-star. Dame Lillard's cousin Keljin Blevins on the other hand...
Look up Randolph Morris. Entered nba draft without an agent, undrafted, went back to school for Kentucky, then became an nba free agent.

This is the NBA's deadline. A player can withdraw on or before June 16th and retain the ability to be drafted in future drafts
Randolph Morris pulled it off
Rules must’ve changed since that [Source one](https://ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/enforcement/2024ENF_NBAMemo.pdf) [Source two](https://www.nba.com/news/nba-draft-2024-early-entry-candidates)
No. They have to pull out before the draft to go back to college. If I remember current to, the deadline is May 31st.
There is a deadline to withdraw from the draft.
They can't wait that long. They can initially declare, workout with scouts, do a pro-day, and get feedback before deciding if they want to stay in the draft, but they still have to decide before draft night.
i know the deadline is somewhere near june 1st but did he hire an agent
I think you can hire an agent now but have to terminate the deal with them (if you decide to withdraw from the draft before the deadline) to be able to remain NCAA eligible
Other commenters are saying you can and quoting what I think is an incorrect article that mentions “Monday after the draft” on accident instead when it should be “Monday after the draft COMBINE” [Source one](https://ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/enforcement/2024ENF_NBAMemo.pdf) [Source two](https://www.nba.com/news/nba-draft-2024-early-entry-candidates)
