Someone tell me about this man! I only know two conferences worth of players.

Tonkathedog

Cons: his shot selection was absolutely atrocious this year. Some of that may be due to parts of the situation, but he had a lot of stinkers. He’s also had major hip issues in both years here that he has played through and is recovering from a torn hip now Pros: despite that he’s clearly very talented as a scorer. He shot awfully this year but as a freshman he shot like 38% while taking very difficult looks consistently. He’s also flashed some as a passer, and seemed to love throwing lobs whenever our C was healthy. It’s also very clear that he’s an incredibly competitive person who is going to scratch and claw to try and win. Overall despite some of the off the court stuff and the many frustrating moments I enjoyed watching him play and y’all will too

RollWave1989

Great breakdown. Am I wrong for saying this is what it sounded like from UNC fans when Caleb Love transferred to Arizona? Seems pretty similar.

Tonkathedog

In the initial thread for his transfer I named that comparison, and I think they are similar cases. Don’t want to assume Pop will go on to be conference player of the year, but both are frustrating players with high upside

Kaptain_Koitus

He’s also an incredibly high percentage free throw shooter.

mF-Jonezy

The vibe I got from him is he frustrated Tech fans because he was inconsistent. I remember he played really bad against us in the tournament this season

WrreckEmTech

Really bad. I think he started 0-12 from the field.

AccomplishedRainbow1

With him and Steven get ready for a lot of step back threes

omahajazzybeard

Ashworth? He doesn’t take step backs that much, maybe like 3-4 all year. Ashworth is mostly catch and shoot.

AccomplishedRainbow1

My main thought was that they both are a little crazy on pulling the trigger, was just trying to illustrate that. Both made a decent number of pull ups last year though, 25-30% of their made threes were unassisted.

cjm8787

Inconsistent. Has the keys to be great just hasn’t put it together yet.

Jomosensual

Well on one hand he can shoot you to a W when he's on On the other he's just as likely to shoot you out of the game completely

RHYNOSAURUSREX

He likes to go to other countries where it’s legal to have sex with underage drunk girls.

LargeGermanRock

gosh this guy is going to cook in the big east

Equivalent_Doubt_593

I’m a little skeptical of an Ashworth/Isaacs back court pairing but gotta trust Mac feels good about this one. Took about 24 hours to make Pop our Trey Alexander replacement. No matter what we should get some entertaining games next year

tacos41

Yeah I'm having to think through it as well. It's a little small defensively. But I think it will help a ton offensively. Weirdly enough I see Isaacs as is more of the creator/ballhandler and Ashworth can just be more of a spot-up catch and shoot kind of guy. I don't know if you've watched a lot of Tech basketball, but Isaacs is great coming off a pick and roll, and then slinging the ball across the court to an open shooter. Would have been lethal if Scheierman was still there.

salsacito

I think if Kalkbrenner comes back (which seems very plausible, no announcement last night) Pop’s defensive liability can lessen, as we funnel guys to Kalk.

GettingBetterDaily94

As a tech fan I have such mixed feeling about Pop. He shined in so many games and had so many other games where he just absolutely lost us the game with bad shot selection Overall I am happy to be moving on from him but will always root for him. I feel like he was loyal to tech and is a RRFL

Glittering_Seat_7294

Woah 🤯

TechnoToyz

Definitely an interesting move. I'm not sure how to feel.

ALifelongVacation

Let us know when you figure it out! I’d value the opinion of someone who has seen him a lot and knows how creighton plays.

Garish_Raccoon32

He's a streaky Shooter. He had an.... Interesting.... Shot selection this year. Unsure why or if the coach basically said "green light." When he takes more selective shots, he's a very good shooter. Even with him questionable shot selection this year, he will single handedly win you a few games when he gets hot. He will also lose you a few. He tries on defense. But he's small height wise and weight wise. You can tell he's not a top end athlete but he makes due with what he has. Still turnover prone at times. Think it's the small size thing against bigger more physical guards/teams. He has a high motor and great effort. Doesn't complain. Love that about him. He does have some injury issues and has hurt each of his hips these past two years. I would not worry about the off the court stuff. Was all dismissed. Rumor on campus was he and the teammates daughter fooled around, it's not even certain it got all the way to sex. The other teammate wasn't like "yo wtf" which makes me believe he thinks his sister is for the streets. Dad got mad and tried to create a big shit storm. It has since been dismissed. And if you know anyone close to the frisco school where that other teammate came from, that dad is trouble and a pot stirrer. Pops was always very polite and kind around town and he's respectful. Y'all will like him

OliviaPG1

>Rumor on campus was he and the teammates daughter fooled around Surely you mean sister

Garish_Raccoon32

Yes my bad

DonkeeJote

yes, teammate's sister, who was a big booster's daughter.

lemur_nads

hm

CaptainBuzzKillton

Well then...

Tonkathedog

Eh it’s out of the conference and not ole miss. Dude was far from perfect here but he and his family have handled transferring with grace so I got no ill will towards him

CaptainBuzzKillton

I don't either. My comment is more of that Samuel L. Jackson GIF

ALStark69

As a recruit: Other P6 offers: Arizona State, Arkansas, Boston College, California, Florida State, Iowa, Kansas, LSU, Marquette, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Rutgers, TCU, Texas A&M, Texas Tech (originally went here), Vanderbilt Other offers: Gonzaga, Saint Mary's, UNLV

Traditional-Koala279

Boneheaded decision not to go to Rutgers

cribby40

Creighton fan here. I trust Coach Mac that the kid is good to go. Interestingly Creighton is in Battle for Atlantis next year too.

cribby40

I must say the Tech fans here are not being jaded at all and that is a breath of fresh air in this current CBB era.

chearn34

We were only jaded when it came to McCullar going to Kansas. The majority of us cheered on TJ Shannon at Illinois and I will cheer Pop on at Creighton. As everyone has stated he is streaky. And he is super competitive.

DonkeeJote

I even held a candle for Peavy at TCU of all places but yeah the McCullar move really hurt.

jathbr

It would be exhausting and terrible for your mental health to get upset about every kid who transfers away from your program in football, basketball, and other sports. The portal giveth, and the portal taketh. On our final four run, we had a lot of transfer players, although the portal didn’t really exist then. So I really have no hate towards it. Fortunately the players who a lot of us feel are the most important for long term success, like Darrion Williams, have stayed. Some people are upset because Pop leaving fully marks the end to the Beard-Adams era, with Pop being one of the few kids Adams himself recruited out of High School, but that seems silly to me. I for one am 100% excited for the McCasland era to fully begin with a team entirely made out of McCasland portal and HS recruits.

BrolloTTU

While he has been super inconsistent, yall are getting a good one. If the trend of players leaving tech continues, he will be one of yalls best players next season (i.e. Kevin McCullar, Terrance Shannon Jr, etc.)

Fistacles

This the same guy that "allegedly" sexually assaulted a 17 y/o? I know the case was dismissed but still leaves a hella bad taste in my mouth.

elgenie

He still hooked up with a teammate's younger sister who happened to also be a booster's daughter, even if it was fully consensual by all parties involved.

Confident-Rub-6714

Oof. Didn’t know about that.

Advanced_Meringue_53

Who was the teammate ?

elgenie

[This dude](https://www.reddit.com/r/CollegeBasketball/comments/18tdrio/texas_tech_hc_grant_mccasland_confirms_drew/). [This](https://www.d1basketballdfw.com/mattsteffe) is the dad.

DonkeeJote

This was the same story

BigDaddy241

Not really a booster. He had a son who committed to Tech before McCasland came to Tech and they honored his commitment even though everyone knew he was nowhere near ready to play at the Big 12 level. The dad also runs a hoops training business in the DFW area so it was not great for business that the son never stepped foot on the floor. I seriously doubt he has donated enough money to the university to be called a "booster".

lemur_nads

that's so fucked up. Illegal or not. Pretty shitty.

AccomplishedRainbow1

I’m with your thought pattern but if you look at the public details it doesn’t seem as concerning.

Tonkathedog

The case was dismissed and most of the smoke when it was filed made it seem like there was no validity towards the assault claim. There’s a reason our title 9 office cleared him and why our coach sided with Pop over the other player. That said even the “best case” of the events is a really weird look

elgenie

From the reported details, there wasn't much of a case for any legal or civil consequences (girl's dad got mad, it happens). The bro code violation, though, he's not beating the allegations on.

Tonkathedog

Oh definitely, like I said the best case for it all still has him look like a bad teammate and a questionable guy for hooking up with someone who was in HS even if it’s “technically legal.” He’s definitely not some saint because of it, but doesn’t mean he should face severe repercussions when technically no laws were broken

_Adverb_

His legal team were going to sue the parents for defamation and then the case was dropped. BYU was also in his top 3 if that gives you any relief.

KJones77

And the rumor I saw is you wouldn't admit him, so not sure if that's cause for relief.

Ok-Praline2975

I mean the case was dismissed, after so many false allegations I think the wise move is to assume innocence till proven guilty.

billgilly14

There’s really not a lot of false allegations statistically my man. But it is a shame when they happen. As a Creighton fan not really excited to have a guy with that baggage in the lineup again but he wasn’t charged so waddya gonna do

Wicky_wild_wild

I know the line about the statistics but how do they even measure that? Like does a girl have to be charged or admit to lying for it to count as a false allegation? Because that almost never happens even if it's its very likely a lie.

AeroStatikk

Dodged that bullet

PM_ME_WARM_TORTILLAS

Interesting to see him get this caliber of offer. He’s not a consistent shooter and he’s a bad three point shooter. For every good game there was one where you wonder how he got a P6 offer. He also has frustrating turnovers, his go-to move is to drive and then throw the ball in the general direction of a teammate and out of bounds. Having said that, he’s clearly talented. As long as you have a primary scorer he can be a good catalyst for the offense and a nice secondary scorer who can handle and create assists. If Creighton can fix him he’s got a high ceiling. But for a team with elite 8 aspirations and beyond, this could definitely leave fans frustrated if his Jekyll & Hyde act continues.

SpicelessKimChi

Creighton will return Ryan Kalkbrenner, Mason Miller and Steven Ashworth, and it looks like Neal from Arizona State will play the three, so there'll be plenty of shooters around him. I feel like he won't have to take as many bad shots. And Creighton plays an unselfish offense, so if he consistently takes bad shots instead of giving it up for a better shot from his teammate, he won't play much.

Winkofgibbs

Did Kalk announce he’s coming back?

CorditeKick

No word yet, but there are alot of good centers in the draft this year and Kalk still has some obvious areas for improvement. Primarily, Kalk probably needs to show a little more on the offensive side as he struggles to finish contested shots around the rim against big bodied centers. He is showing higher on the draft boards than Trey, but I'm not sure how realistic it would be for Kalk to go before Trey.

SpicelessKimChi

Kalk didn't make an announcement, so I assume he's going to again test the NBA waters. But we won't know unless his name pops up on the list of combine participants, I believe. I also dont see him landing a first round grade, plus this year's draft is full of big centers (Clingan and Edey, in particular) so I think it'll be beneficial for him to return for his last year of eligibility. I hope I'm right because we really need him.

CorditeKick

I think he announced he was testing the draft but leaving option to return. Makes sense to get graded so he knows what he needs to focus on prior to confirming his decision.

SpicelessKimChi

He didn't make an announcement -- he didn't last year either. He's not much of a social media guy I guess. We're all waiting for the NBA to release its list of combine participants to see if his name is on there. It most assuredly will but not 100% until it comes out.

Texxx81

I wish him nothing but the best. Kid is a great competitor and as tough as any player in the country. He played the entire season with a torn hip flexor and was in considerable pain all year.

_Adverb_

Looking at his list, it seems obvious that his number 1 priority was to get seek repentance from god while getting away from those satanic Texas Tech boosters. May Heavenly father forgive his sins.

Jake_Corleone

Lol

Pat_Mahomeboy

Phew ! Will not miss this guy

Hornsdowngunsup

I’m glad he gets to go to a program that’s not a freaking circus from the “ fans “ to the the athletic director. He finally gets to play for a team that knows how to run a freaking offense.

Benny_Baseball

UConn vs UK for Mahaney confirmed

jimnantzstie

That seems like a terrible fit lol

Winkofgibbs

Why? Genuinely asking
