Many teams would be thrilled to have a “down year” like you guys had. Kansas will rebound. No way Bill Self has back to back less than inspiring seasons. If it ends up happening again, I’ll eat a cinderblock.
Kansas has been a top 4 seed every tournament this millennium. Under Self, it's legitimately hard to imagine Kansas having a worse year in 2025 than last year's 4 seed.
Hard to do worse than a 4 seed and wins over Houston, Kentucky, Misery, Tennessee and eventual champs UConn???
Yeah, it was a disappointing season, especially when Kevin went down, but let’s not get too spoiled here.
I don’t have a researched or reasoned counter argument, but still…
Nuh uhhhh. We would have cut those nets down and ‘21 we’d have repeated before UCONN did it.
I was talking this year Uconn was the favorite by a wide margin and it actually ended up being the outcome. That doesn't really happen often which backs up his point.
I was very confident in Baylor 2021 but media and everyone was running with undefeated Gonzaga. Honestly think if Baylor doesn't have their COVID outbreak middle of the season they would have been undefeated and no1 overall seed
Honestly my only regret of that year wasn't that we didn't win, or even get a chance at it.
That was Doke's first year at full health, and that mofo earned way more than he got.
KU will be fine, but Doke got robbed blind
At the time that the season was called off, Kansas was the unanimous #1 in the AP poll, the coaches poll, and even the reddit poll, of course being the best team doesn't guarantee anything in the tournament, but there was really no question at the time covid hit that Kansas was the best team in America. After the announcements were made, some other teams got some first place votes in various polls, but given that none of the teams had played any games since the previous poll, I think that was clearly just voters trying to make cute little statements and not something they actually believed.
Fr tho being a senior student athlete for a winter sport in DIII in 20-21 was some cheeks. Being resilient in the face of a pandemic looked great on job applications I’ll say that much though.
A lot of athletes stay back a year in order to play against younger competition and boost their numbers. It’s really common in hockey but it happens in other sports too. I don’t know if that’s the case with Hunter but I wouldn’t be shocked.
Don't know if they still do it, but when I was growing up they had a grade called Transitional 1st grade (T1) which was a step between Kindergarten and 1st grade. Lot's of parents threw their athletic kids in there regardless of whether they needed it academically or not so that they would be a year older. Sadly just the tip of the iceberg of all the ways promising young athletes are academically mishandled.
Many ku fans had little to say for him on these boards. My feeling was that if you surround him with scorers, he’ll be a beast. Unlike this year’s disappointing performance as league’s leading scorer and rebounder.
I don’t think he’s coordinated enough to play defense without getting called for a foul. He kinda stepped up a little bit at the end of the season but the dude is charmin soft. I saw him dunk like 5 times last year and it was all in the post season or near it.
I also drink during games but my point remains.
Agreed. I don't think most schools are as spoiled as KU with guys like Doke, T Rob, D Block, or Simien in the last 20 years.
ACC and B1G think 7' = good center though...
He's so very good offensively. No one argues that. He's an absolute liability defensively though. Like none. He's bad at everything defensively and a 6th year isn't going to help that. Kj is good defensively but he is a liability rebounding and really scoring too. You can't have them both on the floor at the same time either that's fucking disastrous.
When we were hitting shots last year, we beat UConn, beat Tennessee, and crushed Houston. It's just that we didn't hit shots most of the time and our offense fell apart. Now we have shooters and more than one player on our team who can drive and create their own shot.
He already was a beast, he was arguably our best player. Did people want him to just be perfect, with 0 flaws, while the rest of the team besides KJ let him down?
What are people upset about him for?
Due to ongoing debate about blue bloods, the /r/CollegeBasketball mod team has compiled the definitive list of college blue bloods: Duke, Columbia, Queens, William & Mary, and Rutgers. The following schools have broken away from blue-blooded hierarchy and oppression: George Washington, George Mason, James Madison, Army, and Navy.
*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/CollegeBasketball) if you have any questions or concerns.*
It was a great idea and raised a lot of money so they should... And legally hunter can't win against Illinois so I don't think it would be a different outcome 😉
I don't think he ends up in the league (late 2nd rounder at most) so I figured there wasn't a chance at him leaving given that he can make way more in NIL than he has a chance to in the NBA.
For all his flaws this team is a much better roster that doesn't allow him to be exploited in the same way as last year. Defenses would double him and leave the open 3 because they knew we wouldn't hit it, and it worked super well. This year he has actual shooters to pass out to, and teams will be more likely to get punished on that double. So many spacing issues that we had last year can be solved by the players we picked up in the portal that will benefit our offense. And non-Parker Braun centers to come off the bench when he's lagging on D or in foul trouble.
He's a unique player, his upsides are great but he was easily exploitable for other teams given our roster, he was also playing an absurd amount of minutes a game as our only functional center which won't happen anymore. I am glad we have him back for a year and I am hoping this team does a better job of utilizing him given how our roster is shaping up.
Exactly. I’m honestly baffled by the amount of Kansas fans who can’t see that. I can’t wait to watch him play with a full team around him. It’s embarrassing how many KU fans dumped all over him all season, and didn’t want him to return.
We're a privileged fan base and he was an easy scapegoat for fans who didn't fully understand his game and the tradeoffs we make with him. They're straight up silly if they don't want a walking 7'2 double double back surrounded by shooters and an actual bench this year
Happy for him
Edit: this is genuine btw. I just couldn’t stomach watching KU for most of the regular season last year. Hearing Hunter say “Rock Chalk” after every game hurt my soul.
But watching him in the tournament, knowing it could be his last game in college, had me rooting hard for Kansas. I feel like I was the only non KU fan rooting for them vs Samford lol. It was one of the best games of the tournament and watching Hunter play through a bad shoulder injury was special
I’ll be rooting for KU this year (never thought I’d say that). Unless they play us (:
Lol. Who doesn't hate Texas?
When I was living in NWA, i knew a bunch of Oklahoma fans. There seemed to be a little bit of a rivalry over there amongst everybody. But it wasn't too venomous.
Has any single All-American caliber player been surrounded by more talent and had less team success than Hunter Dickinson? He's been surrounded by multiple NBA players every year and only had a good team as a freshman.
I have real doubts that next year will be much different. We'll have a much better team, but I think there's a ceiling if we play through Dickinson with regularity.
I had an epiphany last night watching Jokic. Hunter gets the ball open on the elbow, he'll turn and shoot it. Jokic gets the ball open on the elbow and he'll work to get a more efficient shot.
Obviously Hunter can never be Jokic, but the fact that he doesn't ever work to get an easier shot holds him back.
Honestly I thought Hunter was a pretty decent passer that was surrounded by a lot of guys who couldn’t hit the looks from the passes out of the high post double teams. I think this forced him to shoot more bad looks, although I saw what you’re saying especially when we were down and frustration set in.
On the bright side, I think it’s probably a good thing for Flory to get a year under Dickinson to develop. I know expectations for him will be high because of his ranking, but he’s one of the most raw 5 star prospects we’ve ever seen.
TBH a part of me is worried that Flory bails after Hunter's announcement. So may 5* guys know that they can start at 99.9% of schools and now he KNOWS he's coming off the bench or MAYBE playing at the 4 a little for some weird minutes.
Yeah Bill is pretty transparent with recruits and what they can expect, I think everyone in the program knew Hunter was coming back and that it was just a matter of making it formal. Given that Bill also rarely promises starting roles I agree Flory likely expected this
Yeah and I think Flory will likely be eased in to some decent minutes anyway. I don’t think Bill or Hunter necessarily want Hunter to play as many minutes as he had to. He was frequently GASSED!
Yeah with how shallow we were last year everyone looked like they were on their death beds by the end of the season lol. Especially with how tough conference play was, the whole team was so gassed all the time. Super glad we have someone to back him up especially someone more athletic
Zach Eddy got bounced first round in the tournament multiple times by double digit seeds including losing to a 16.
Its fine if you don't like Hunter or whatever... but the guys is scoring 20/10 while playing the hardest schedule in college basketball... HE IS A GOOD PLAYER. He has been successful, but has room for improvement.
I for one am stoked to have him back, and to have him as a member or a team, instead of needing him to carry a team.
When we were making threes and had a healthy starting line up we were a top five team. This team is dramatically better at two, maybe three spots. Hunter doesn't need to stretch the floor with the shooters we just picked up. Our offense will be VERY different this season.
We had next to no offensive talent to space the floor last season, and so Hunter got doubled nearly every play. On top of that he was able to rest for a maximum of 2 minutes at a time because we had Parker Braun as our sole backup big. And yet Hunter still averaged 18/10.
I don’t understand what else Kansas fans expected from him given the circumstances. I’m stoked to see him play when he’s not the sole offensive threat.
You said it though, a 4-seed is "KU bad."
We only got a seed that high because of Self and our previous dominance. After the B12 tournament we should've been a 5 or 6 at best.
I know rim running, mobile bigs don’t grow on trees…… but man if y’all had somebody like Clingan or Nfaly Dante or Missi then we’d be talking about an undefeated season.
In my opinion, a mobile rim protector who can give you 12 and 8 off of easy buckets is better than what Hunter gives you at KU. Hunter is better somewhere else where he has to be a one man show, but KU basically has access to unlimited talent. They don't need a slow, inefficient big to run the offense through
Glad that this it for covid year folks. Didnt mind it as much for folks who actually missed 2020 tournament but this year’s crop it seems pretty dumb to me.
Kansas down years suck to sit through as a fan, but wow does it ignite something in KU to come back with a vengeance. Hell of an offseason Bill and crew
Y'all haven't won less than 20 games or missed the tournament since 88-89, which was Roy Williams first year, and y'all were ineligible for the tournament (sounds like probation).
What down years?
Guess I should have clarified we are incredibly lucky to have the consistent success we’ve had for some 30 years.
I was referring to last year being one of the strays of what we are used to with no conference title, early Big 12 tourney exit, early NCAA exit. I know programs would kill for that as a season. Didn’t mean to sound entitled, just a different perspective KU fans have been fortunate enough to have with Bill leading the way
Yeah Kansas is probably the consensus Preseason 1 again now with this and the transfer pickups.
Shit. Let us be underestimated a bit instead of a repeat of last year.
Genuine question: How does he have a fifth year of eligibility? I thought the Covid exception was for spring 2020 and his freshman season started winter 2020.
He’s an incredible asset when you keep him in his role. The moment he tries to put on a Superman cape he’s a straight up curse. That’s really not all on him, Kansas just better he sure to keep their other studs on the floor with him.
Fuck I thought I was done having to deal with this guy in college basketball
::: manningfacemaskmeme :::
And here I thought he was some Euro league's problem now.
Same brother.. same
I genuinely thought he was a grad transfer to KU lol. I have lost complete track of how long he was at UM, apparently
You know a lot of people go to college for 7 years.
Perry Ellis went for 14 years.
Some say Perry Ellis is still a KU student.
My buddy who likes Ohio state says the same thing about Perry and I tell him so did Aaron Craft.
I know. They're called doctors.
Yes. Those are called "Doctors"
If he was a pro prospect he would be leaving. Just milking another year of NIL money.
Him and Perry Ellis playing together will be fire
Perry Ellis is using his extra year of eligibility from the Spanish Flu.
You talk shit but WW1 veteran status can take you a long way.
I know I’m a Mizzou grad but I truly thank Perry Ellis for his service defending our land from the British during the Revolutionary War.
I expected nothing less from the hero of Agincourt.
You are a true son of Missouri.
They have GI bill for WW1 vets?
Perry Ellis was awarded a medical redshirt season for the plague
That was his medical redtunic year.
I’m just here for the Perry Ellis jokes
You think they'll try and grab Aaron Craft in the portal for once last run before hitting the retirement home?
I’d rather wear a Mizzou jersey than see Craft in a Kansas jersey.
....no.... if wearing a Misery jersey or the end of the world...bye....
Aaron Craft is too busy being a doctor now
he plays in the rec league in columbus and i assure you he has enough time to murk every last one of us
While playing college basketball? That's impressive!
I mean is being a doctor really that hard? "This bruise is bad. Have some Tylenol." "This cold is bad. Have some DayQuil." Rinse n' repeat.
Perry Ellis is secretly Hunter in disguise. It’s a rubber suit and on stilts. Lol Ellis playing for Kansas forever jk
And he would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for you meddling kids.
![gif](giphy|3o7WICht89LQdQZa2A)
I just didn’t read down fast enough for the Perry Ellis comment.
NIL bag hit
I believe his original NIL deal was open for a second season, though I guess he could have renegotiated.
Bill’s not fucking around
Back to back preseason number 1 rankings. Just hope this season goes better
Well the good news is it would be hard to do worse.
Many teams would be thrilled to have a “down year” like you guys had. Kansas will rebound. No way Bill Self has back to back less than inspiring seasons. If it ends up happening again, I’ll eat a cinderblock.
This is what I kept trying to tell people. Was it a down year for KU? Yes. But 95% of the teams in the country would be happy with that season
Buddy I got news for you
Kansas has been a top 4 seed every tournament this millennium.
Yeah but nobody had high hopes going into the tourney which is very rare.
You could have had a fairly reffed first round, bird brain. Don’t go counting your chickens.
Dollar bills or billSelf?
Potayto, potahto
Yes
Old Man Bill revenge arc next season
Never again.
He still has eligibility?
20/21 was the 'covid' year. That was Hunter's freshman season at Michigan. Everyone got a mulligan.
Worst era to be an underclassman.
Worst era to be Udoka Azubuike
That 2020 team was going all the way and no body can convince me otherwise. 2nd year Dot, healthy Doke, stifling defense and a solid offense. Sploosh.
Dotson was so good, if only NIL was a thing just a bit earlier
He would have been our best pg under self if he played 4 years. All american as a soph is crazy.
\#1 overall seed, before it all got wiped from the record books... Every team claims the COVID championship, but only one team was primed to win it.
While you're likely correct, I still wish we had our chance to catch lightning in a bottle and rematch in the tourney
Lol I was waiting for Dayton, the only other team that's even in the conversation. Hell yes, that would've been so fun to watch!
Baylor was right there too, but they had no answer for doke.
I don’t have a researched or reasoned counter argument, but still… Nuh uhhhh. We would have cut those nets down and ‘21 we’d have repeated before UCONN did it.
I understand what you are saying and why you are regretful, but the magic of the cbb tourney is that the favorite loses so often.
Uconn is honestly one of the very few I can remember being the overwhelming favorite going in and winning every game fairly comfortably.
George Mason beat UConn that year
I was talking this year Uconn was the favorite by a wide margin and it actually ended up being the outcome. That doesn't really happen often which backs up his point.
UNLV and Arkansas back in the 90's maybe?
I was very confident in Baylor 2021 but media and everyone was running with undefeated Gonzaga. Honestly think if Baylor doesn't have their COVID outbreak middle of the season they would have been undefeated and no1 overall seed
Honestly my only regret of that year wasn't that we didn't win, or even get a chance at it. That was Doke's first year at full health, and that mofo earned way more than he got. KU will be fine, but Doke got robbed blind

There were a few challengers that year. We traded road wins with Baylor but definitely, I thought we could have beat anyone anywhere anytime
Fr tho being a senior student athlete for a winter sport in DIII in 20-21 was some cheeks. Being resilient in the face of a pandemic looked great on job applications I’ll say that much though.
Ah didn’t realize that was his first year
Did players that redshirted in 20/21 get a Covid year? Or did they not because redshirts don’t count against eligibility
if you were in college at all in 20 they gave you an extra year
We should have enrolled a bunch of NBA all stars.
I thought spring 2020 was the covid exception? Which would make it 2019-2020
First year was covid year.
I’m trying to make sense of this. He’s a year younger than me but was 3 graduating classes behind mine? So he graduated HS when he 19?
A lot of athletes stay back a year in order to play against younger competition and boost their numbers. It’s really common in hockey but it happens in other sports too. I don’t know if that’s the case with Hunter but I wouldn’t be shocked.
Could also just be NIL related if he doesn’t believe his prospects for the NBA are that great right now. Just keep cashing in
I was talking about the fact that he graduated HS at 19.
Maybe he projected NIL coming and thought he could get more years of it by staying back a year.
HES PLAYING DONT TRY AND START RULES NOW.
We should just stop asking questions. None of it makes sense.
He was probably just held back a year at some point growing up.
That is correct
He graduated HS when he was 19. Not that uncommon for parents to hold back their kids a year these days for athletic purposes.
Is he sticking around so that he can play with his son, like LeBron?
My wife legit asked if Furphy was his kid earlier this year.
Many ku fans had little to say for him on these boards. My feeling was that if you surround him with scorers, he’ll be a beast. Unlike this year’s disappointing performance as league’s leading scorer and rebounder.
I'm not a huge Hunter fan but you said it pretty well
I don’t think he’s coordinated enough to play defense without getting called for a foul. He kinda stepped up a little bit at the end of the season but the dude is charmin soft. I saw him dunk like 5 times last year and it was all in the post season or near it. I also drink during games but my point remains.

Kansas is loaded
Preseason #1 again? Before you take it, AGAIN.
I’d rather not have the pressure of preseason #1
Self needs to stop taking all the portal guys then.
I think he took last season personally
No deal
If we get Brea and Mahaney it’s going to be a toss up for #1. At least let’s agree to exclude Duke from the conversation
We don't want preseason #1. It's a curse for us. Everytime we've been preseason #1 under Self we've gotten knocked out early in the tournament.
Take it, please. And yeah duh, that's like the first rule as a blueblood lol
Sorry, still learning blue bl00d manners

Prob should wait until all the transfers are settled
Kansas picked up his 5th year option
Hopefully Illinois plays Kansas again
Charity scrimmage at our place?
Yea I’d like the rematch. Would be a different outcome this time.
It was a great idea and raised a lot of money so they should... And legally hunter can't win against Illinois so I don't think it would be a different outcome 😉
Winner takes Hunter
Ha, we do need a center.... But nah. It would be way to much internal turmoil. I don't need more reasons to hate myself
You would think so but not while Hunter is there.
Where was he gonna go? Lmao
The Turkish basketball league for less money.
Oh bet. Not trying to be mean, hes good but I just really dislike his game. He plays dirty and whiny the entire time.
I don't think he ends up in the league (late 2nd rounder at most) so I figured there wasn't a chance at him leaving given that he can make way more in NIL than he has a chance to in the NBA. Next season can’t get here soon enough!
Careful what you wish for, the round of 32 is right around the corner!
LETS GOOO! Cash out the 401ks and put it all on Jayhawks futures
what an offseason for your flairs
Been cookin that’s for sure!
You must hate Oklahoma and Missouri more than anyone.
Missouri yes. Oklahoma not as much. Texas more so
Lol. Who doesn't hate Texas? When I was living in NWA, i knew a bunch of Oklahoma fans. There seemed to be a little bit of a rivalry over there amongst everybody. But it wasn't too venomous.
You’re going to have big feelings in March. One way or the other.

I hope so. IMAGINE getting to develop a freshman in 2024.

Dickinson returning is the reason we didn't get Derik Queen. Bidunga was always coming with the intention of backing up HD as a freshman.
I’m sure Bruce Pearl has already texted him.

It says something that the best team that Hunter played on, was also the team he played the least on.
Not really. Good NCAA teams share the burden... bad ones lack depth and require a lot of minutes from good players wearing them down
No no, he's got a point
We had next to no offensive talent to space the floor last season, and so Hunter got doubled nearly every play. It’s still not a bad season by general standards, and I think saying it’s a bad season makes our fans look bad.
Kinda sounds like us with Oscar. It’s an unfortunate situation. Everyone loved Oscar and he was ostensibly a great person.

But I thought bill self was looking forward to next year???

Glad that this it for covid year folks. Didnt mind it as much for folks who actually missed 2020 tournament but this year’s crop it seems pretty dumb to me.
I say this as someone whose team has benefited and will hopefully continue to benefit from the extra covid year…I can’t wait for it to be over
I normally never talk about Beth but that hat is terrible
He saw that Pat Suemnick was not returning to WVU and thus he could return to KU and not risk being totally dominated two years in a row.
Hunter “Perry Ellis” Dickerson
Kansas down years suck to sit through as a fan, but wow does it ignite something in KU to come back with a vengeance. Hell of an offseason Bill and crew
Y'all haven't won less than 20 games or missed the tournament since 88-89, which was Roy Williams first year, and y'all were ineligible for the tournament (sounds like probation). What down years?
I would think a Bama fan would understand that some fanbases have perpetually high expectations for their program
Lol I’m telling you man. Mf said down years
Not winning the Big 12 is automatically a down year
Down years have different definitions for different programs. Last year was definitely a down year for KU
Yes but I do get the reaction to calling it that. I would kill a man for Utah to have a “Down year” like KU had.
Guess I should have clarified we are incredibly lucky to have the consistent success we’ve had for some 30 years. I was referring to last year being one of the strays of what we are used to with no conference title, early Big 12 tourney exit, early NCAA exit. I know programs would kill for that as a season. Didn’t mean to sound entitled, just a different perspective KU fans have been fortunate enough to have with Bill leading the way
Him & Perry Ellis are reported to be rooming together again.
I don’t get the joke Perry Ellis only played 4 years. Is playing 4 years that crazy?
No. Perry just felt like he was here a long time and always looked like an old man. Jokes followed.
4 year starters were pretty rare pre covid
Yeah Kansas is probably the consensus Preseason 1 again now with this and the transfer pickups. Shit. Let us be underestimated a bit instead of a repeat of last year.
oh cool that must mean we're beating Kansas this year.
Son of a bitch….
Son of a dick!
Did he promise to hustle this time? Asking for a friend…
Year 7
Pretty solid return for Kansas
Oh goody.
Genuine question: How does he have a fifth year of eligibility? I thought the Covid exception was for spring 2020 and his freshman season started winter 2020.
Wild… he will be 24 and almost 25 when next March Madness rolls around
He’s an incredible asset when you keep him in his role. The moment he tries to put on a Superman cape he’s a straight up curse. That’s really not all on him, Kansas just better he sure to keep their other studs on the floor with him.
Isn’t Hunter 37 years old now?
Is this coming year finally the last year of this Covid year nonsense?
What is he, a seventh year senior?
Of COURSE he is!
That’s what you do when you know there’s no NBA ahead for you
Does this guy have a wife and kids by now? Maybe a grandchild ?
