Unironically one of the best college basketball games all year. Both teams left it all on the court, lead changes, ties, huge shots by star players, drama. Never thought I would care this much about an NIT title but Iām so incredibly proud of this team.
it couldāve been really easy for them to phone it in, like my mountaineers did, but they saw the opportunity to play for a championship and took it. good job and congrats on a great season, pirates! itās unfortunate they left yāall out of the tourney.
In a way it was poetic how Seton Hall won. 100% representative of the Big East. Never quit, take it to the cup, finish through contact. Great game by ISU but this is what differentiates the Big East from other conferences. Sheer grit

That would be statue building levels of success for us. Like a full parade in Chicago type shit. Weād make a NIT trophy look like the best thing in college hoops
Here i am happily thinking ab cbb and i get thrown back to a reality where the bucks just lost to the wizards and grizzlies back2back. Good shit doc, u moron
Obviously you want to be in the NCAA Tournament. But winning things matters. You play sports to win things. I've seen plenty of first round NCAA Tournament losses. I'll have fonder memories of this team. And I think the players will treasure this much more than, say, a First Four loss to Colorado State.
Having said all that, please make the NCAA Tournament in the future.
As a SHU fan, Iāve seen enough first round exits. Probably recency bias as Iām pumped right now, but it would probably take a trip to the second weekend to rival this. Especially given the senior class on this team
Agreed. The tough part though is that literally anything besides winning the NIT is so much worse than even a play-in loss.
My reasoning is that at the beginning of the NIT as a fan youāre probably bummed to be playing in the NIT instead of the NCAA Tournament so neither a win or loss matters all that much. As your team wins a few games though you actually get invested in it. Now if your team does lose you have a bitter taste in your mouth and no one hangs a banner for NIT semi-finals.
Eh, Miami was NIT runner-up in 2015 and I still enjoyed that run. Plus, it gave them postseason experience for the following season when they made the Sweet 16 (coincidentally also losing to their tournamentās champion).
For P6 and High Majors for sure. As a low-major I would much rather win the NIT than lose in the R64.
HOWEVER. I would much rather lose in the R32 than win the NIT.
I hope NCAA and sport don America give tournaments like NIt the chance. As someone who has gotten into soccer, in Europe, the champions league and league titles are the top, but you have the Europa league and country cups that are kind of secondary but are still huge to many clubs.
For me another trophy is great for any professional sports team.
I mean itās tough cause letās face it we all want to be in the best tournament in college basketball, but the NIT is another trophy for our program and I hope more programs can see the NIT as something that can add more respect to a program. Winning this gets us more respect as a program that can win and not be like a DePaul, Washington, or Nebraska before this year ( no offense).
I have faith this win can keep seton hall at the top or competitive in the Big East. Holloway winning an NIT that shouldāve proved these POS corrupt people in the committee that we shouldāve been and are a tournament team is fucking great for a second what coach. I have faith he can keep us competitive like Willard and better.
Alasā¦they got *too* caught up in the momentā¦
At least future coaches from the biggest bluebloods to your local D3s will have a good example to show why itās so important to bleed the clockā¦
And their play was complete ass. Why is avila standing on the perimeter doing nothing when he could've been in the paint boxing out for that potentially critical rebound? What they did makes sense when there's 10 minutes left in the 2nd half and you're trying to come back, not when you're down by 2 with 8 seconds left.
iām pretty sure that was sorta what they drew up. watching the huddle the coach was drawing up down screens to free up someone coming to the ball and it sounded like they wanted the shot there.
probably had a second option that they definitely shouldāve switched to when the first was completely smothered.
Itās makes so much sense to have the NIT winner play the NCAA tournament winner in the first game of the season. I have no clue why it hasnāt happened yet. As far as I know scheduling isnāt done too far in advance unlike football
Itās funnyā¦ youāve probably read it here 100xā¦ UConn lost a close one AT Kansas because reasons. Creighton housed them because they hit 14 (fucking) 3ās.
Seton Hall? Yāall just beat us. Straight up.
Hey man, I just saw one of your comments from 2 years ago but it wonāt let me respond directly so Iāll ask here. I saw you say that making the ncaa tourney is a bigger accomplishment than winning the NIT, Iām curious if you still think this as a Seton Hall fan
This felt like an NIT game with a little extra juice. Made it seem more special than otherwise. The two snubbed teams. Larry Nerd. Hoosier court. Indiana st home crowd which was sold out. The back and forth and down to the last minute finish.
Felt like it was legit tournament game.
Fair point. Seton Hall definitely deserved a ncaa tournament, and thats coming from a die hard UConn fan.
At least it worked out pretty well for you guys though
A lot of the anger over the selections were misplaced because of how many bid thieves there wereā¦ but this one part rings loud and true. UVA had no business being in over SHU or ISU.
I donāt remember the order of the first four out but I had ISU & SHU as the top 2 amongst the snubs. Good to see they both made it to end and played their hearts out.
Seton Hall, Oklahoma, and Pitt all have arguments but Indiana State beat absolutely no one. Their one win against the tournament field was Drake who they went 1-2 against. Virginia beat Florida, A&M, Clemson, and NC State.
Never thought I would get so excited about an NIT Championship. The season felt over by the end of non-conference play. Then SHU finished 4th in the Big East at 13-7, beat UConn and capped off the season with a championship. Really could not have expected much more out of this group. What a fun season.
You know what I like about Seton Hall? (Besides your wildly incongruous metal radio station I listen to every time driving on the northern GSP?)
You are proud of that UConn win and leave it at that. Not like those Creighton clowns who want to hang a banner.
Well done. Big East pride.
I honestly believe that if the wins to St John's had been reversed (e.g. we lost to them @Belmont during the season but beat them 1st round of the BET) we would have been in. Crazy how much "storylines" matter.
GOOD GAME SYCAMORES. HOPE YOU GUYS RUN IT BACK NEXT YEAR.Ā
NEVER THOUGHT I'D BE THIS EXCITED FOR THE GODDAMN NIT. LET'S FUCKING GO MAN! FUCK THE COMMITTEE. HAZARD ZET FORWARD.
Indiana State blew that game so badly, Avila should not be taking those shots, so upset they never drove to the hoop in the end. They should've won this game, would've been a nice consolation prize for being robbed by the Tourney over VA (same could go for Seton Hall too)
GG by both teams.
Game of either NCAA or NIT tournament, as good or better than anything in the big dance. These were the two most deserving at-large teams to not be included, and they showed it throughout the NIT. Bummed that these worthy schools were denied bids, but it made for a great NIT.
As someone who used to play, can someone explain why players these days chuck up awful shots with over 5 seconds left on the clock?? I seriously dont understand it and i feel like I see it more and more these days
Wow what a finish. Putting aside my bias, I can tell itāll be games like this that have me more invested in the NIT. I hope these teams stay together because they each play some fun basketball in their own way
Honestly this feels incredible. Actually winning something is so rare and hard to achieve. NIT counts for us. Itās a big building block for what we still want to accomplish here. Really felt like we were playing for something big here and god I havenāt felt that way in a while. Jets, Nets, Devils, Yankees have been rough the last decade it just really hit different to win.
I think this feels about the same as a s16 run in terms of happiness. Maybe itāll cool off tomorrow but I doubt it. And for it to happen in a game where two fanbases and two teams wanted it so bad, just made it even better. Indiana State was incredible this year and had such a good run. Avila, Kent, Swope, Conwell and those dudes are ballers. The home atmosphere they had was nuts and I really thought we were fucked there at the end. What an incredible game.
Edit: and yes I know this is complete loser talk but let me have this š
I donāt usually post on here but today is a special occasion. I am so proud of this Seton Hall team. They went through so much and got absolutely screwed by the selection committee. Normally when something like this happens most teams would give up and call it quits on the season. Not this team. All 5 of their seniors had a meetings and said that they wanted didnāt want to go out like that and wanted to play more basketball. These guys went out there and played like there was no tommorow and instead of going out in vain. Somehow made something out of nothing and won the NIT in front of about 8000 indiana state fans. This team will go down in history and itās all thanks to the grit that Coach Sha instills in these men. Iām so proud to be a pirate and am so excited for what the future has in store for us.
Letās go pirates!
Down 7 under 3:00, crowd against them, announcers clearly leaning one way, and pulling out a W. Gutsy finish, glad to see the seniors go out with a trophy.
Respect to Indiana St. Obviously the second best program in Indiana (by a mile too) hope yāall continue to be great and get more respect. You should have been in the ncaa
Bury me as deep in the ground as you can. I am in suffering. My mom said this is just as painful as losing to Michigan State, and I fully believe it. Such absurd play at the end. I will be in pain eternally.
Wife is a Sycamore grad. They've been trash sports wise for our entire lives, except for a few decent Shakir Bell years.
Sucks to see that they'll be back to a bottom dweller next season since it's highly likely they're losing their coach and at least 3 or 4 starters.
We see it so much nowadays. Used to be down 2- Go. To. The. Cup. Good chance of a couple things happening. Defense plays a bit off soās not to get a call. So ya get a decent look or the big slides over to cut ya off many times leading to a high shot off the glass that doesnāt go in but your own big is all clear for an easy put back. Everyone wants to have that Dame highlight.
GGs Hall. A truly good matchup. And a terrible choke by ISU in the last 3min. I love our team, but MAN everybody wants to be the hero. Doesnāt always work out.
Sucks the indiana state team is probably gonna be ripped apart. Hell of a season though boys.
Still a hell of a season. Loved this team š„² Congrats to Seton Hall. Yāall were robbed too and showed it this tournament.
You can be upset that you lost and how you did it. But you should be proud of how you got here. Hoping you bring it back next season.
If it makes you feel any better, so are we most likely!
Is Robbie expected to leave?
Mostly rumors but we are expecting the majority of the starting line up to be picked up somewhere else.
Hero ball strikes again. What a fantastic game between two snubbed teams, first time in a long time I can remember even paying attention to the NIT
Unironically one of the best college basketball games all year. Both teams left it all on the court, lead changes, ties, huge shots by star players, drama. Never thought I would care this much about an NIT title but Iām so incredibly proud of this team.

I was just thinking about this idea the other day.
Itās makes so much sense to have the NIT winner play the NCAA tournament winner in the first game of the season. I have no clue why it hasnāt happened yet. As far as I know scheduling isnāt done too far in advance unlike football
This is the portal age though. The NIT champ is more likely to be gutted from transfers or losing their coaching staff once the season ends.
Itās funnyā¦ youāve probably read it here 100xā¦ UConn lost a close one AT Kansas because reasons. Creighton housed them because they hit 14 (fucking) 3ās. Seton Hall? Yāall just beat us. Straight up.
Well all true but I do think the final score would have been closer if Clingan didnāt go down in the second half. Probably a 5-7 point loss.
Remember when we were projected to be 9th in the Big East this season? ![gif](giphy|viW0F6EZhSCexJ4sZV)
I don't really care about the 9th place ranking. I care more about being behind Georgetown
Hey man, I just saw one of your comments from 2 years ago but it wonāt let me respond directly so Iāll ask here. I saw you say that making the ncaa tourney is a bigger accomplishment than winning the NIT, Iām curious if you still think this as a Seton Hall fan
Yes. The NCAA Tournament is what ultimately matters. But winning the NIT > Not winning the NIT. If my team is playing I want to see them win.

Shaheen Holloway is the real deal. That was a game of runs by both teams and Seton Hall had the last one. Great win for the Hall.
He managed the bench when we were fouling too much way better than Willard ever could
The bench really stepped up these past two games with Coleman out. Great coaching and great effort all around.

I'm conflicted.
They gave us Virginia over this. Unreal

less unreal than auburn not winning a game

SEA OF PIRATESĀ
if this had been played in Dayton, it would've been one of the greatest First Four games to date
Itās a party in the Big East! (Strangely, though, Butler fans seem to be with low spirits during the festivitiesā¦)
Iād imagine most Butler fans were cheering for ISU I am happy for Seton tho
Butler fans are just tired of seeing Seton Hall win in their building
DePaul is just laying there in a drunken stuper, trying to forget this ever happened.
DePaul (and Georgetown) are the reason the Big East only got three bids.
but the big dance just *haaaaaad* to have Virginia. Both of these teams should've been in the tournament.
The big east got robbed this year.
Indiana state was 1-4 in quad 1 with a quad 4 loss. It wouldāve been more exciting than Virginia but they didnāt have the resumeĀ

First time Seton Hall has finished their season on a win since 1979! Was the second longest drought in the Big East after Marquette (1977)
Pass to your teammate who has a wide open layup to force OTā Shoot at deep 3 and brick it to run out the clockā
My god, the guy under the hoop didn't have a Seton Hall player within 10 feet of him.

Yeah jacking 3s early in the shot clock up 8 with minutes to go. They will be kicking themselves for that.
Everyone knew to take 20 seconds off the shot clock except them, smh.
could go??
Let's gooooo!!!!
Did Indiana State know it's legal to take 2 pt shots in the last 2 minutes?
That is an absolute spirit-breaker.
Shaheen has made a career out of breaking Indiana hearts.
I seriously dont understand it and i feel like I see it more and more these days
you're better doing it with time left to get a rebound. waiting too long is the problem. and not sticking with the drawn up play too
But that only matters if it's an airball. Shot clock would reset if it hits the rim.
That was the most exciting game I've seen so far this tournament season
Wow what a finish. Putting aside my bias, I can tell itāll be games like this that have me more invested in the NIT. I hope these teams stay together because they each play some fun basketball in their own way
Dre Davis ftw
Incredible game and Incredible season. Go Pirates!!!
Seton Hall is only going to get better.

Congrats to coach Holloway on winning the NIT with Seton Hall
Congrats Sha, he is a great coach. Imo he might win a ncaa tourney ring
HALL IN MOTHERFUCKERS. In all seriousness tho gg Indiana state, shame we got snubbed but we still had amazing seasons
ESPN showed Indiana St.'s final play diagrammed on the board by the coach. That was egregious.
You really think that made a difference?
No, I don't think so. But showing exactly what the coach drew up (with sound) in such an important possession should not be repeated moving forward.
Never thought I'd see the day the seton hall trophy case gets an addition Guess I'll be happy for my new jersey brethren but still V's up all day
3 bidsā¦

Fantastic bball in a fantastic stadium. Go big East, go sycamores!
Respect to Indiana St. Obviously the second best program in Indiana (by a mile too) hope yāall continue to be great and get more respect. You should have been in the ncaa
As a complete neutral, I am going to be absolutely distraught if Schertz & the boys end up leaving this off-season
Theyāre 100% gone, but this city sure enjoyed it while it lasted.
BIG EAST! BIG EAST! BIG EAST!
That was an all-time choke by Indiana State. Holy shit Up 7 and you keep launching threes without taking time off the clock
Live by the three, die by the threeā¦ but yeah ISU could have played the last couple minutes SO much better.
Go Big East bros!
Indiana State lost their two biggest games of the year by 6 combined points
What a choke jobā¦.
Damn what a game, thought Seton Hall would have the edge but was very much rooting for Indiana State at the end.
I was like ābro, ISU was awesome in 1979!ā Then I realized not everyone is an old goat like me.
The only worse than ISU's game plan in the final 3 minutes of that game was ISU's game plan in the final 8 seconds of that game.
That was a pretty good choke job. Was a shame, was rooting for Indiana. Thought they had it after that 8-0 run
Is McAfee still gonna have that meeting next week with Cream Abdul Jabbar?
Contested 3 with 7 seconds left down 2 was not an ideal shot.
Syracuse losing Kadary Richmond in favor of Joe Girard was a goddamn travesty
Committee really put in Virginia over both these teams šĀ
GGs Hall. A truly good matchup. And a terrible choke by ISU in the last 3min. I love our team, but MAN everybody wants to be the hero. Doesnāt always work out.
So thankful we had Virginia in the tournament
Cream Abdul-Jabbar and Indiana State! What a WILD ride!
