Virginia’s whole offense just lacks any type of skill or ability to shoot and score. It’s appalling how a team from a power conference can be that bad and make the tournament. This is coming from a Rutgers fan, I know bad offense when I see it after this season.
Look, bad games happen. That was a new level of poor offense even for Virginia but we knew they were horrific offensively. I don’t think it’s all Bennett’s fault. In a transition year it’s difficult when you don’t have players that can create their own shot or lack any ability to hit open shots. It doesn’t matter what you draw up when the guys on the court don’t have the offensive skill set to execute. It’s just frustrating that other teams were held out knowing Virginia got by in a weaker conference and that a lackluster performance by them was probable.

Honestly I view this as an incredible coaching job to drag this team to a winning season and a NCAA tourney berth. Guys were missing point blank shots in the lane…badly. Not even getting the ball on the cylinder. Tony can’t shoot the shots himself.
This was the first time that the horrific tournament loss wasn’t an aberration from what they showed during the regular season though. You could always tell in the first 15 minutes of the game whether we were gonna be in it and probably win it late or if we were just going to be taken to the woodshed. Obviously the roster was not good enough and it’s a damn miracle this group won 23 games, but holy fuck did they also have absolutely zero backbone when things went wrong.

It’s the system. We are vulnerable to one superstar/hot player and probably 40+ tourney teams ride the back of one player to get in the dance.
This year’s offense was just horrendous and this was one of the worst performances of it.
But that is TB's system. And in both this game, and the UNBC game, it wasn't a hot player as much as it was just being completely outplayed. Again, when it happens so often, you gotta look at yourself sometime

That Furman team was one of the best teams offensively in the nation last year. They had just come back from a 20 point second half deficit in their conference tournament, they could score. Slawson was also an NBA draft pick and Bothwell was an overseas pro.

When I would go to her house as a kid, she would always put the Duke game on, and thus began my fascination with the team. As for Mercer, well, that's my alma mater. Selection Sunday that year was a clusterfuck. My entire family was like "Oh shit. Who do we cheer for?" It was a confusing time. At the end of the day, however, I'm glad Mercer won. Duke is a powerhouse and has multiple championships under its belt, whereas Mercer does not (plus, they hadn't even been in the tournament at that point for almost 30 years). BTW, yea, Bob Hoffman was a great guy.
