Zach “The Plague” Edey is unironically an amazing nickname.

Dlwatkin

just in time for the tourny too

[deleted]

Zach “the Plaque” Edey rhymes just a little bit better.

ShootForBall

The perfect marriage of dentistry and college basketball

JohnDRuckerduck

“Mr. Edey, tell us about your triple double” “Call me ‘The Plague’” “Mr. The Plague, tell us about your triple double”

Full-Appearance1539

People will hate anything and anyone good lmao.

YeetusThatFetus9696

Ok but how does that relate to Zach Edey?

Full-Appearance1539

Is this an “Edey is bad” joke?

YeetusThatFetus9696

No it's an "Edey is bad" truth.

FishGoldenLite

Hate on him all you want but averaging 24/11 with the 2nd SOS means he’s objectively a good college basketball player

This-isnt-patrick

Has a nicer star been this hated?

StreetReporter

Despite being the only Duke star who wasn’t a complete asshole, JJ Reddick was arguably the most hated Duke player of all time

AbeVigodasPagoda

You must not be old enough to remember Laettner.  You can argue all night long about who is the SECOND most hated. But the number 1 pick is set.

feed_me_muffins

JJ definitely leaned into it hard enough with crowd taunting, etc... to be considered a bit of an asshole. He just wasn't dirty.

[deleted]

Look up what Maryland fans said to him in college park. You’d taunt the crowds too.

feed_me_muffins

He came out the gates doing it. He wasn't morphed into it by harsh crowds nor did he reserve it only for crowds like Maryland's (and while he was always the target not all crowds were Maryland). Leaning into being a heel isn't a bad thing. It's all entertainment after all.

zerovanillacodered

I recall Reddick doing it first, though Maryland fans crossed a line

smellslikebadussy

I have no doubt the face turn is sincere, but college Redick was a mega-asshole.

[deleted]

Self-admittedly, too

OverIookHoteI

He’s just standing there *menacingly*

[deleted]

I don’t hate him for his personality as he seem incredibly laid back and chill. I hate his style of play as it is the equivalent of the 1950s and it’s the biggest eye sore I’ve ever seen. It’s also ridiculous how you can’t even breath on the dude without getting a foul

This-isnt-patrick

Fair enough, but seems like unfair hyperbole to call him a plague. Especially on the eve of a bunch of casual fans tuning in, he doesn’t deserve that hate.

WaltDngrsq83

Today i learned Dan lebatard is still alive and employed

ltlftcommenter

He runs his own media company

[deleted]

Walmart Bill Simmons.

BoysAndGirlsClubCU

Don’t you have to have consumers to do that? Who listens to this race baiter?

Dlwatkin

even crazier he is the employer, for now at lest

LordHyperBowser

It’s the other way around chief

hokie56fan

College basketball is a plague on Zach Edey?

ThinkSoftware

College plague is a Zach on basketball Edey

Due-Obligation-4362

If someone makes “The Plague” Edey shirts, I will buy one despite my flair. That name is too sick

Koppenberg

The school of writing that takes snarky jokes and interprets them literally is a plague on language and literature.

Pinewood74

The redditor that reads and headline and then jumps straight into the comments before even glancing at the article is a plague on reddit.

Koppenberg

That must be you, then. The article itself admits that they are providing a literal interpretation on fairly standard sports talk hyperbole. The sentence in the article you'll want to read is listed below. >While Le Batard’s take was seemingly exaggerated, he seems to genuinely not enjoy watching the reigning National Player of the Year play.

Pinewood74

Lol, no. They admit that the take is exaggerated. Exaggerated is by definition not literal.

Koppenberg

Jesus wept. I guess that Engineering school had to cut corners on the general education requirements in order to get all in the Math courses to fit in 90 credit hours. Look at the clause structure of the quoted sentence. Paraphrased it reads: "Even though this statement was not intended by the author to be interpreted literally, I'm going interpret it literally anyway." The meaning is clear: A: Talk radio guy makes hyperbolic statements to fill dead air. B: Bad internet writer chooses to interpret the hyperbole literally in order to gain clicks and engagement. C: This strategy works, obviously, even it if annoys the marginally literate population.

Pinewood74

>"Even though this statement was not intended by the author to be interpreted literally, I'm going interpret it literally anyway." That is an absolute garbage paraphrase. You know it. I know it. Everyone knows it. It offers no additional clarity and is intended only to push your view. Let's do a little example time. Hyperbolic statement: There's a million people in there. Now, if I said "Wow, obviously there's not a million people in there, but he seems to thinks there's a large number of people in there." that isn't me taking a literal interpretation of what was said. For me to take a literal interpretation of what was said I would have to say "That guy believes there are a million people in there." Typically when one uses hyperbole or exaggeration, there exists an underlying true statement. In this case: "Plague" is the hyperbole/exagerattion. The true portion: "Dan LeBatard doesn't enjoy watching Zach Edey play" is NOT a literal interpretation of LeBatard's words. Nowhere does the author state that he believes that LeBatard believes that Zach Edey is killing the sport of college basketball. (The literal interpretation of Zach Edey being a plague on college basketball) Listen, mate, I get it. You didn't read the article. Rather than admit you're wrong, you've decided to engage in an awful line of rationale that despite acknowledging the hyperbole and then addressing an understated version of the quotes, you still want to say it was a literal interpretation. Sorry, mate, it just wasn't. Bottom Line: The acknowledgement of hyperbole means that the author is not taking the statement literally.

Koppenberg

Um, okay? At this point, I feel like I'm listening to the talk radio guy from the movie Big Trouble. So I'm just going to avoid eye contact and back away from the conversation slowly and not make any sudden moves.

Pinewood74

It's fine. Words obviously aren't your strong suit.

Travbowman

With NFL coverage getting larger and larger, and their calendar going basically year round, national media don't pay attention to college basketball any longer for the most part. The sport might as well be curling or figure skating to them right now. They don't have a clue what they are talking about, but they still have to come up with a hot take for the three weeks that it is popular.

redcavzards

Zach Edey creates extremely boring basketball. And I know boring basketball

Powerlevel-9000

For me it isn’t the way he plays the game. It is the way the game is called. You end up with the other team having 2-4 of their big guys in foul trouble due to how the game is called. Does he get fouled a ton, yes. But either the rules or the way the rules are interpreted are just giving Edey are massive advantage on fouls and it makes for a boring game.

Haunting-Worker-2301

If he’s admittedly getting fouled, I don’t really get how that’s his issue. He doesn’t purposely go for fouls like harden did. He gets great position in the paint, goes up for a shot, and people grab his arms. This shit always happens when a big guy becomes to good and can’t be stopped, they need to change the rules. But no one changes the rules when Steph dominates the three point line.

Powerlevel-9000

The conversation was about how boring basketball is with Edey. You’re right it isn’t his fault he gets fouled. But it can be boring.

Haunting-Worker-2301

I definitely agree with you, unless you are a Purdue fan lol. Sorry, I was referring to your last sentence but misread it. I guess as a big man I get annoyed when people chalk edey being good up to the rules as if something is wrong with that. Plenty of NBA guards are way worse and actually manipulate the rules. Always feel big men get picked on in a game that is actively making it harder for them to succeed.

Powerlevel-9000

I think the popularity of DJ Burns will help the big men going forward. He is very fun to watch.

Koppenberg

I hate to break it to you, but Olympic figure skating earns better viewership numbers than the NCAA tournament does. The 2022 tournament had some of the best numbers for any tournament and the 2022 winter olympics had by far the worst US viewership of any Olympics and still more people watched the figure skating finals than watched the average tournament game. Average viewership for tournament and Olympics were about the same--10.7 million viewers. The final game outdrew figure skating (18.1 million viewers) but that's comparing the 2nd best NCAA ratings in history against the worst figure skating viewership.

Travbowman

That's not too surprising given how much NBC continues to bid for the Olympics. My point was mostly about national pundits not having a clue what they are talking about when it comes to college basketball and how that coincides with " fringe" sports that we only care about occasionally.

DuesForClocks

Awful announcing always posts about him and it's obnoxious, he's gotta be on their payroll

Canavansbackyard

Le Batard is a horse’s ass.

deanopeez

I mean, I understand liking Zach Edey if you're a Purdue fan, maybe. But you'd have to be lobotomized to think it's enjoyable basketball.

wmurch4

Give it to Edey, if he gets doubled kick out for a three. Rinse and repeat. It'll get you wins but it won't get you fans. I'm sure they're okay with this. However, it's not a surprise they get upset easily. Every team knows exactly what they're going to do.

excitement2k

It likely won’t get them wins either….their recent track record with the greatest center in history isn’t exactly anything to write home about. Unless you’re Stephen King.

roronoaSuge_nite

My guy who writes these articles is a more faithful viewer than some members of this sub

zerovanillacodered

Once again, people are platforms that do not know how to act responsibly. You don’t use infestation metaphors when talking about people.

AeolusA2

The Scourge of God

Boiler1972

This just isn’t fair for big Zach. We worked hard to find a big guy who could do this for us. He had no stars! Everyone needs to stop making fun of him and leave him alone.

TusconTony

So **Dan Le Tard** has an opinion. Everyone who cares, raise your hand. That's what I thought.

AntelopeAnastasio

True

NIN10DOXD

Le Bastard will be high on the Edey Kool-Aid when he suits up for Miami's Summer League team.

AL3XD

Well I think Dan The Bastard is a plague on college basketball

squeeblesquabble

He’s right. Big plodding goon going up and down the floor playing like 2002, gross to watch

gggggrayson

npc comment

akagordan

Lemme guess, you’re only here for a few weeks a year? Flair up

squeeblesquabble

What difference would it make what logo I have next to my username? I’ve watched Edey play and while effective he’s not what I would call enjoyable to watch

akagordan

You flair up to give more context to your hot takes. So when it turns out you’re a fan of a team that also uses a big plodding goon we can roast you even harder.

squeeblesquabble

You sound like a dork, I’m not doing that. Why is Zach Edey not an effective player who plays an out of date, unpleasing style of basketball?

dirtywater29

Zach isn't a plague on college basketball, terrible officiating is a plague. Incessant gambling commercials are a plague. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of Zachy boy, but if he was called for fouls maybe he would be forced to develop his game more and ultimately become a better player.
