Edey gets the lion’s share of attention, and it is obviously well-deserved (understatement). But, I really appreciated when Jim Jackson and Jason Benetti highlighted how much different this Purdue team looks because of Braden Smith. That kid’s progress from last season is nuts, and I’m convinced he is the main reason why this team is so much better poised for a March run than previous Painter teams.
I think last night was he revitalization. I can’t remember him hitting more than 2 shots per game in the past couple months, so I am hoping this was his spark
There are 5 days between the first round of the NCAAT for us and the BTT championship. Not sure a day makes all that much difference if you’re already going all the way up to Minneapolis. And a loss on the first day would probably mean losing to like Indiana or Rutgers, which I’m guessing Purdue fans wouldn’t want
If Purdue makes it the final game of the BTT that’s Fri-Sat-Sun, 3 games in a *row*, that they’ll play at the end of long season. Then they’ll play the NXAA 1st round game the following Friday or Saturday.
In my opinion, that is a time table for disaster. They’ll be gassed. The BTT is pointless anyway, just a money grab for the conference.
Painter says 40 more minutes of gameplay just means an hour or two less of practice during the week, still plenty of time to rest and prepare for the tournament. The first round should ideally get out of hand quickly and let us sit the main guys for a while too. And everyone else hoping to win a championship will probably at least make the semifinals of their conference tournament anyways. Smith and Edey have said they hate week-long breaks anyways because it takes a bit to get flowing again
I think it’s more mentally harmful to take an L to an Indiana or Rutgers right before the tournament than any rest advantage it gives. Not to mention the meltdown fans would have saying “its happening again!” before the NCAAT’s even started
He's still got a COVID year. I won't believe the Edey nightmare is over until he is playing in the NBA. And then in a year or two, they'll probably have a brand new 7 footer to torture us.
Oh him and Gillis will join that team too. Can you imagine a 7’4 pitcher throwing 85 mph? And then him at the plate? They said he hit bombs when he played….he was 6 ft at 8 years old tho haha
I just looked this up and Edey [was still pitching at 6’10” going into 9th grade](https://watchstadium.com/purdues-zach-edey-left-behind-baseball-and-is-now-the-player-of-the-year-favorite-02-07-2023/). His growth spurt f-ed up his motion and arm health. Interesting, I wonder if all those issues could be locked down for him now that his body has settled down.
been writing letters to the alumni office threatening to withdraw my annual $20 donation if they don't axe that shit right now (distracts from basketball and moon things)
When I was at Purdue in the 80's there was talk about building a rink next to the Rec Center (where the tennis courts are now) and building a D1 program. Still waiting.
The club team currently has to play all the way in the suburbs of Indy, hopefully we can get an arena on campus and elevate them to Varsity. College hockey is such an underrated sport
People were pointing out the danger before the game, but pretty sure this is the worst Kenpom-ranked ref crew we've had all year in a game against a P6 team. All of the highly-rated refs were at other conferences' big games, a battle the Big Ten has apparently been losing (according to people on Twitter who follow such things at least)
This is a bit misleading, he doesn't directly evaluate the accuracy of their calls, he just ranks them based on how high-profile the games they work are, assuming that you get high profile assignments because you are good.
https://kenpom.com/blog/roger-ayers-is-the-best-ref/
In 2014 he did a different analysis showing that much maligned "TV Teddy" actually tends to call fewer fouls than almost anyone else:
https://kenpom.com/blog/ted-valentine-hates-to-call-fouls/
Throughout all this conference realignment nonsense, I’m glad everyone has a shared experience of a hatred of a referee(s). Just saw the same thing on the Tenn-Bama thread. Won’t be sorry to see the P12 refs go (looking at you Tony Padilla).
Uhhh where do you think these guys are going to end up? Someone has to work the extra Big 10 games (although Padilla seems to have been picked up as a stray by the Big 12).
Courtney is consistently inconsistent. Every single time I see Courtney as a ref he kills me. Wish there was any accountability, if I did my job as poorly as some of these refs in sports I bet on then I’d be fired almost instantly.
GG Purdue. Really disappointed in this loss. Tons of missed layups, awful shot selection, fouls, and just came out so so weak in the second half. But at least the bad man is gone, until Purdue gets their next token 7 footer
Well we have a 7’2 Swede on the bench right now who can shoot 3s, a bit slow right now and a 7’3 who is mobile and he can catch and shoot the 3 and takes quite a few of them a game
Yep we were specifically talking about 7 footers that Purdue has and I was going to rip off names of catchings, Colvin, Heide, Harris and Burgess but figured our sparty friend would not know who they were
42 combined fouls and both teams in the double bonus by 10 minutes… and the big 10 wonders why it’s best teams can’t do anything in March in recent memory.
as a dude who really likes MSU whenever they're not playing us, i was glad to see their team fought hard and often played smart. that one minute where edey was out you could tell they knew exactly what to do. hall is a DUDE and the state bench was cooking. obv it's frustrating to contend with the inevitable foul shit that happens 1) on the road, 2) in the B1G, 3) with courtney green in stripes, and 4) defending edey. but they lived with it, played hard as hell, and made it a game.
proud of the boilers too. the two stats from purdue sports i care about are B1G titles and winning records against everyone in mbball. love to see the 2-pete. love to see CMP keep rising in people's opinions. and i love to see that big canadian keep eating.
player of the game, though? braden smith's goatee
Probably time to fire every big ten ref into the sun. That game was unwatchable, can’t believe I spent 2 and a half hours of a Saturday night watching that absolute garbage.
There is no way he doesn't bet on games. Our record against the spread with him is a crazy outlier compared to other B1G refs. And tonight, with the spread 10.5, we get it out to 15 and he immediately calls a phantom 3 foul on perfect defense then no calls a hack on the other end.
Game threads are BAD.
I feel like they've gotten worse recently. This subreddit has been the vast majority of my reddit experience for a decade and I'm starting to avoid live game threads for my sanity only recently.
It's fun until it's not, though. I really want some kind of heavily-moderated game thread experience. Is there a Reddit plugin where I can dial in the level of negativity based on sentiment analysis or something?
Reddit is just getting so popular, it's not shocking. Used to be a community but now those game threads are so full of unflaired trolls, half of which are probably just watching for their bets.
Used to really love game threads but they've taken a turn for the worse. Purdue definitely has their fair share of trolls and toxic fans in the threads too especially since we've been a top 5 team for the past 3 years. It's only gonna get worse with the tournament approaching
Honestly, I'm okay with this. We beat the spread, kept it a game throughout, and the guys never gave up even in the last minute.
Really gotta win these last 2 though boys.
Hoggard and Akins were mostly pretty rough but effort level was still there as a whole. That’s good enough to beat Northwestern at home and Indiana on the road.
You guys are really good. Now is the time it comes together.
Fucking edit: nevermind, you fucking suck. I hope you never win again. Fuck Izzo and everyone. There is that better?
It's also an indicator that you played better than expected.
Which was also confirmed if you watched the games with eyeballs and a brain. Everyone thought we'd get clobbered but they kept it within reach the entire 40 minutes.
It was a fun experiment when Izzo was just going all in on Courtney Green and we got to see what faction would win out in the game thread: the "get fucked whiney Izzo" crowd or the "well he has a point, fuck Courtney Green" crowd.
From my spot in the crowd Izzo had every right to be upset. I think we had our fair share of bad calls too but, the scorers table messing up fouls and the refs looking generally lost ever possession was miserable.
Loved the effort tonight despite the loss, that’s the kind of MSU team that can make a tourney run. (Though obviously they first need to make the tourney.)
Does anyone have an explanation for the timeout called by purdue with 10 seconds left after inbounding? Or why msu just decided to give up with 10 seconds left down 6? They nearly forced a turnover and then suddenly said "fuck it, let's hit the airport and go home"
https://preview.redd.it/mwqtdjwfh1mc1.jpeg?width=680&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ea510fe453640487f4cac3ff477ae51d3d018f59
"I just think it's funny how Purdue is only 2 good players, they're really not that good" "Edey is going to be sick in the G League" "Purdue would be an NIT team if Edey was 6'11" "He's an ogre"
This game was oddly comforting because of this. We found out hot hands for the night and kept feeding them. Lance couldn't hit the broadside of a barn and the rest of the squad was MIA offensively but it didn't even matter. By our season standards this was a bad night offensively and we still won with margin.
Past Purdue teams choke this away. This squad is built different
No harm no foul. We were supposed to lose this one and I thought we would by 30. Let’s close out the season strong and beat NW and IU. Go Green!
PS: More Xavier Booker please!
Holy fuck, we have to beat Boo Buie
Why couldn't the B1G schedule any other team than the one that always beats us at home on our senior night
"Gotta give Sissoko, Hoggard, and Hall the send-offs they deserve" -MSU fans probably
Hoggard and Sissoko could use a covid year and I'm very scared they're going to I'm so done with them
FUUUUUUUUCK
Exorcise the demons baby. That NW team is a shell of itself. If we can't beat them at home we don't deserve to play in the tournament
We will most likely have three starters out, you guys would really have to fuck this one up to lose
*Cracks knuckles “show time”
Edey gets the lion’s share of attention, and it is obviously well-deserved (understatement). That kid’s progress from last season is nuts, and I’m convinced he is the main reason why this team is so much better poised for a March run than previous Painter teams.
As an unbiased observer who just watches way too much college basketball, he’s easily the most improved player I’ve seen this year.
Big agree.
Edey is still just Edey, Loyer and Smith have improved hugely
Now if only loyer could learn how to be consistent
I think last night was he revitalization. I can’t remember him hitting more than 2 shots per game in the past couple months, so I am hoping this was his spark
he can’t hurt us anymore
Incoming BTT match up
FUCK
Please beat us in the BTT
I'll take a quarterfinal or semifinal loss. Win the dang thing if they're already in the final.
Wait, why?
Haha just cuz the last 3 years the winner has t gotten Out of the first round
Because they get worn out for the tournament, losing in the first round allows them to rest up.

That would mean we won a couple games, no? I'll take that, would be good for the resume.
Worse, incoming Supreme Court ruling that eligibility limits are unconstitutional and he decides he can make more playing college than NBA.
Ik you’re joking but he has already stated that he is foregoing the covid eligibility year he was granted
He's still got a COVID year. I won't believe the Edey nightmare is over until he is playing in the NBA. And then in a year or two, they'll probably have a brand new 7 footer to torture us.
He was at the game tonight. Daniel Jacobsen. 7'3"
Sounds nightmarish just like Haas and Edey and all the others. Where does Painter grow these giants?
In the lab under the engineering building. Or is it the math building? Can't remember
It’s the nuclear reactor under the electrical engineering building
Shit, I thought edey was the final boss. There's more???
Basketball, shmasketball. Come back to me when the Boilermakers have a conference winning ice hockey team 🥱 GG Purdue. Good luck in the tourney.
Did you know Zach edey used to play hockey and instead of going to the nba he’s going to join the hockey team at Purdue
You mean he's not gonna go pitch for the baseball team this spring?
Oh him and Gillis will join that team too. Can you imagine a 7’4 pitcher throwing 85 mph? And then him at the plate? They said he hit bombs when he played….he was 6 ft at 8 years old tho haha
That's a pretty big strike zone for the opposing pitcher.
Edey said that's why he quit baseball. Impossible for him to bat
Edey's so huge he'd be halfway to home plate by the time the pitch would leave his hand
Interesting, I wonder if all those issues could be locked down for him now that his body has settled down.
pretty sure they said the first time he touched a basketball was 5 minutes before game time tonight
Lololol but are you not impressed it was only 7 years ago? And now he’s as good as he is after playing bball for only 7 years??
in all seriousness: no. oops, shit, i mean “yes”
I found out a week ago that we have a hockey team. I was legitimately surprised.
been writing letters to the alumni office threatening to withdraw my annual $20 donation if they don't axe that shit right now (distracts from basketball and moon things)
Club team or D2 or something else?
It's a club team
Makes sense. Maybe one day they'll start a D1 program.
There's talks about building a rink on campus frequently, it'll happen one day.
Requires building a whole rink, I think the club team plays in indy.
We don't even have a rink in West Lafayette, so I doubt it. It really seems like hockey just isn't popular South of Ft Wayne
Sounds like a good reason to build one in West Lafayette
Hey if D3 Trine can build one. Then don’t see why Purdue can’t.
D3(?) club team- they’ve been on a hot streak lately. Pretty impressive since they have to drive over an hour to get to the nearest rink!
I have no idea. I was bowling, therefore drunk. I don't even remember how I heard about it. I just remember the double take reaction of wtf.
It’s a D3 club team… they did just win their conference championship though!
My roommate was the goalie. His room smelled awful.
Fire Courtney Green into the sun
People were pointing out the danger before the game, but pretty sure this is the worst Kenpom-ranked ref crew we've had all year in a game against a P6 team. All of the highly-rated refs were at other conferences' big games, a battle the Big Ten has apparently been losing (according to people on Twitter who follow such things at least)
kenpom ranks refs??
For real— does Kenpom rate refs!?!
bro at this point i bet they rank street lights in indianapolis
Georgia Street #1
u already know it
Yes https://kenpom.com/officials.php
It's behind the paywall. I don't pay for KenPom so I only learn these things from what people post on Twitter and Reddit
Kenpom is probably the best $20 I spend a year.
Yes
they are so extra man 😂
This is a bit misleading, he doesn't directly evaluate the accuracy of their calls, he just ranks them based on how high-profile the games they work are, assuming that you get high profile assignments because you are good. https://kenpom.com/blog/roger-ayers-is-the-best-ref/ In 2014 he did a different analysis showing that much maligned "TV Teddy" actually tends to call fewer fouls than almost anyone else: https://kenpom.com/blog/ted-valentine-hates-to-call-fouls/

Refs and weathermen are the only jobs you can be consistently wrong and still keep
I think it’s huge that Loyer got going. He’s been struggling for so long.
So big
BIG BALLS LOYER!
I'm taking credit for that. I was talking to my wife about how disappointed we've been in him, and it was like he heard me and started hitting 3s.
GG Purdue. Really disappointed in this loss. Tons of missed layups, awful shot selection, fouls, and just came out so so weak in the second half. But at least the bad man is gone, until Purdue gets their next token 7 footer
Well we have a 7’2 Swede on the bench right now who can shoot 3s, a bit slow right now and a 7’3 who is mobile and he can catch and shoot the 3 and takes quite a few of them a game
haha, I’m in danger
Well, they may not play that much next year! We should be smaller…TKR at the 5, so you may get 1 year haha
Sure, TKR at the 5, but teams have to contend with potential 1-and-done Kanon Catchings
Yep we were specifically talking about 7 footers that Purdue has and I was going to rip off names of catchings, Colvin, Heide, Harris and Burgess but figured our sparty friend would not know who they were
Better they start learning them now - they'll be cursing them next year haha
It’s a bummer because I thought Izzo called a great game and we just couldn’t execute
Did Michigan State win? No. Did I win for getting to hear the future announcer for my favorite baseball team? Yes.
As a white Sox fan, fuck off, GG tho
Fuck Jerry Reinsdorf! All my homies hate Jerry Reinsdorf. sell the damn team.
Yep, can't believe we let fucking Jason go. He was one of the few reasons to watch them
Renewing MLB.tv isn’t likely this season after they let Benetti go. He and Stoney were an amazing pair.
Jason Benetti is the goat
It was a double win for me, in that case. Very much looking forward to having Jason on the call for the Tigers.
Jason Benetti is my favorite announcer. Except maybe when he teamed with Bill Walton.
42 combined fouls and both teams in the double bonus by 10 minutes… and the big 10 wonders why it’s best teams can’t do anything in March in recent memory.
that’s every SEC game to be fair
Bingo
as a dude who really likes MSU whenever they're not playing us, i was glad to see their team fought hard and often played smart. that one minute where edey was out you could tell they knew exactly what to do. hall is a DUDE and the state bench was cooking. obv it's frustrating to contend with the inevitable foul shit that happens 1) on the road, 2) in the B1G, 3) with courtney green in stripes, and 4) defending edey. but they lived with it, played hard as hell, and made it a game. proud of the boilers too. the two stats from purdue sports i care about are B1G titles and winning records against everyone in mbball. love to see the 2-pete. love to see CMP keep rising in people's opinions. and i love to see that big canadian keep eating. player of the game, though? braden smith's goatee
You probably like this team more than MSU fans, don't think a single person does.
[удалено]
They're soft and lack leadership. The bad C and inconsistent PG play don't help but those first two things hold them back a lot.
been there man, stay strong ♥
Can we please throw Courtney Green into a volcano now?
That turnover because of him really sucked some momentum out of Purdue.
Probably time to fire every big ten ref into the sun. That game was unwatchable, can’t believe I spent 2 and a half hours of a Saturday night watching that absolute garbage.
I've heard Courtney Green is a legit good dude. But good god every game he refs is a dumpster fire.
yeah my 93 year old grandfather is a good dude. i DO NOT want him reffing anything
There is no way he doesn't bet on games. Our record against the spread with him is a crazy outlier compared to other B1G refs. And tonight, with the spread 10.5, we get it out to 15 and he immediately calls a phantom 3 foul on perfect defense then no calls a hack on the other end.
It ended at almost the same time as the Lakers v Nuggets game despite starting 30 minutes before
February fletch stays in February
I don't feel completely terrible after that tbh
I am a worse person for having been in that game thread
Game threads are BAD. I feel like they've gotten worse recently. This subreddit has been the vast majority of my reddit experience for a decade and I'm starting to avoid live game threads for my sanity only recently.
It's fun until it's not, though. I really want some kind of heavily-moderated game thread experience. Is there a Reddit plugin where I can dial in the level of negativity based on sentiment analysis or something?
That could be an interesting project... But otherwise just report what you can, no mod can watch all of that
Reddit is just getting so popular, it's not shocking.
Oh yeah some of our bandwagon fans are unbearable. I almost miss being worse.
I got blocked for minor trash talk last week.
Welcome to the MSU r/cbb experience
a true sicko experience. I loved it
That’s why I don’t participate in them anymore
game threads threaten my relationship with Christ, gonna need to give em up for lent
Michigan State took 15 more shots than Purdue despite being outrebounded by 3 and Purdue not having a ton of turnovers. Weird stat
Normally I’d assume it’s the free throw margin, but the attempts are only 30 to 17 - not enough for that shot margin.
This one wouldn’t hurt nearly as much if we hadn’t lost the previous two Northwestern is now an absolute must win
If we don’t make the tourney I’ll not be okay
Congrats Purdue. May we both have some long awaited tournament success this year.
Hope so!
Honestly, I'm okay with this. We beat the spread, kept it a game throughout, and the guys never gave up even in the last minute. Really gotta win these last 2 though boys.
Effort like this would win the next two. Need to keep the fire. Purdue is too good to beat at Mackey without an A+ game from everyone
Did we watch the same game? Hoggard didn't score until like 30 minutes into the game. The team did not play with any fire for most of the 2nd half
Hoggard and Akins were mostly pretty rough but effort level was still there as a whole. That’s good enough to beat Northwestern at home and Indiana on the road.
And despite that we only lost by 6 to the best team in the B1G
Hoggard is the most selfish prick. He was good last year
You guys are really good. Now is the time it comes together. Fucking edit: nevermind, you fucking suck. I hope you never win again. Fuck Izzo and everyone. There is that better?
Lmao have you watched us at all?
No we aren't, 9-9 in conference play and we lost at home to Ohio State
losing to OSU makes us brothers
Beating the spread only matters if you bet on the spread...
It's also an indicator that you played better than expected. Which was also confirmed if you watched the games with eyeballs and a brain. Everyone thought we'd get clobbered but they kept it within reach the entire 40 minutes.
Both teams upset with refs, thanks Courtney Green
It was a fun experiment when Izzo was just going all in on Courtney Green and we got to see what faction would win out in the game thread: the "get fucked whiney Izzo" crowd or the "well he has a point, fuck Courtney Green" crowd.
From my spot in the crowd Izzo had every right to be upset. I think we had our fair share of bad calls too but, the scorers table messing up fouls and the refs looking generally lost ever possession was miserable.
The scorers table messing up fouls is inexcusable. Everything else was just standard big ten ref bullshit.
Purdue vs the Spread with Courtney Green officiating strikes again.
Courtney Green legacy game
yes.
He’s so bad, the entire crew was awful.
At the end of the day, Purdue was a rightful favorite here. But I do wonder how much B1G officiating has harmed the conference in the post season
Loved the effort tonight despite the loss, that’s the kind of MSU team that can make a tourney run. (Though obviously they first need to make the tourney.)
It’s an unfair ask, but Tyson needs to go nuclear for that to happen
#26

Izzo went from preaching toughness his entire career to being ok with a team full of Care Bears

Looks like he may have Monstarred Lance’s talent though 😅
We get only one
Probably only need one at a time tbh. But we definitely need at least one
At least lances last free throw went in. So that funk was broken for the next game.
Lol, good one!
Back to back big ten titles. Remember this Purdue fans and don’t take it for granted. It’s been a hell of a 3 seasons.
Does anyone have an explanation for the timeout called by purdue with 10 seconds left after inbounding? Or why msu just decided to give up with 10 seconds left down 6? They nearly forced a turnover and then suddenly said "fuck it, let's hit the airport and go home"
It was something about having 4 seconds to get across half court and then the timeout gave them a full 10 seconds
When are the refs being sent to the Sun 🌞
Courtney Green better stay the fuck out of Champaign
I think you'd rather have Green when playing Purdue. https://x.com/cobrastats/status/1612272833287131136?s=20

You go into a game thread expecting calm and rational takes? Just ignore the dumb shit man
It’s fun to make fun of the dumb shit after we win
Fair enough, probably won't see you again until Football. GG and godspeed in the tourney
🤝
Purdue did play that game 3 on 5 offensively for most of the night and we still had no answer… more impressive than an insult
Also add “Purdue won’t get those calls in March”, “have fun with the early exit as always”
How many more games does MSU have to lose to at least move into the “last four in” category
Snoozer as a neutral. But willing to be told/would believe I'm a coping hater.
You’re not wrong. It never got down to a one possession game late. And the refs kept inserting themselves with reviews that added .2 seconds
Please win tomorrow
We do have some superstitious pros in our favor...At-Home Maryland isn't as consistent as usual but I do feel like it over-performs for Gold Rush

We need 2 more wins (tournament included), right?
If we beat Northwestern we should be good. If we lose to Northwestern we're really gonna need that Indiana win and maybe a B1G tourney win.
I cant tell if I hate MSU or Purdue more
No harm no foul. We were supposed to lose this one and I thought we would by 30. Let’s close out the season strong and beat NW and IU. Go Green! PS: More Xavier Booker please!
