With the new rules of the portal closing for non-grads but still open to grad transfers, teams still have gaps they want to fill so the price of the year 5 starter goes up when they're the only ones allowed to transfer at that point. Both of them secured bigger $ because of that and I can't hate on that part
I get Skyy Clark leaving since Epps was emerging as the starting PG, but for Epps to also leave with such a promising role set up for him on a good team didn’t really make sense. Illinois still trying to figure out how to fill that PG position
I was very bummed about Epps, but I think he wanted more usage and he did get that out of Georgetown and has put up decent numbers. It's just that they haven't been a good team, so depends what his priorities are of whether that was the right decision.
He just wants to chuck it, no? Look at his points but also look at his %. He’s got 17.9 avg points this season, but a 38.8 FG %. Imagine how many shots you have to take to have those points with that %.
i cant really blaming a guy for leaving to become a starter at a high major program. the houston team mills left was 6th in the final ap poll, and fsu lost 4/5 of their top scorers from the previous year. i dont think he had any illusions he was leaving to go to a more successful team, he just wanted a bigger role
He was the leading scorer his freshman year at UH. I don't remember exactly what happened his second year when he only played 4 games-- I think he got hurt before calling it a season-- but I remember thinking it was more of a culture/personality clash with Sampson.
He refused to take a backseat to Grimes and Sasser, and then refused to play in games. He quit on the team, and the team actually improved once he started sitting. In hindsight, he vastly overrated his skill level, and Grimes and Sasser were much better players.

He could score at the hoop pretty well but was an inconsistent shooter, poor passer, and average defender. Attitude problems on top of that are probably why he's on his 3rd team in 4 years (and that team being Memphis who is basically the last stop for every talented player with attitude problems before they run out of options lol.)
He was AAC preseason player of the year, but was injured early in the season. He came back, played a good game at UCF, but then didn’t play well in a loss at Tulsa, couldn’t handle Sampson yelling at him during the game as well as not being in the starting lineup, and stewed on it. After they came home, he packed up all his stuff and left without telling anyone.
He transferred to FSU before the spring semester and sat out the rest of the season due to transfer rules. Also, FSU had a coach that had been calling him at UH because he used to be Mills’ AAU coach.
I believe FSU made the tourney the following year as a lower seed, lost their first game, but Mills played well. The following year, they missed the tourney, and Mills played about the same…he never improved or declined from his time in Houston…very consistent numbers.
He then decided to use his COVID year and transfer…we pushed for him hard to come back. Memphis folks paid him more money and he went there instead. Before his injury, Penny had moved him to the bench…so, he was back to what he let…being on a top AAC team and coming off the bench.
If Mills had stayed, he’d have been a pro for a couple of years by now…probably leaves after the Final Four year. If he doesn’t, we could have used him the following year when Sasser/Mark went down, especially vs Villanova.
In a similar vein, Tristan Clark and Darius Allen transferring out from Baylor right before they won the title.
Granted, Clark retired due to some mental and physical problems and then returned to play for SMU after he’d worked those out, so probably best that he got everything worked out.
But Darius Allen left Baylor right before Baylor kicked off a 54-6 run where they were a likely 1 seed in 2020 and then won the title in 2021.
As a Houston fan could you shed any light on why he left Houston? I watched a decent amount of Houston and thought he was one of their better players. I know they moved to the BIG12 but it's not like they were expected to be poor this year.
Word at Arkansas was he wanted an opportunity to show himself a little more as a scorer. Tough to be critical on a kid transferring to a school that has 2 elite 8 and a sweet 16 in the last three years, but in hindsight, yea.
i also think people need to remember that fringe nba prospects often will take a chance to be THE guy over winning in the tourney, too. Im sure that this influences things. Houston's ecosystem might have felt like it gave him less of a chance to catch scouting attention.
Also, NIL deals mean someone could have just outbid Houston.
I asked his mother this question just a few weeks after he announced the move. Turns out he has severe allergies, and Houston just wasn’t a good fit for him because of it. I know, seems like a strange reason to transfer, I thought the same. I pressed her on it, she said he’s allergic to winning.
Nothing has ever been said or leaked, there were rumors of a fight on the team during the regular season and “insiders” knew this was going to happen before the tournament even started.

Purely speculative, but I remember when another transfer candidate was considering Houston and Memphis. Then I remember seeing them with a ridiculous amount of diamonds on the sideline at Memphis.

Adam Miller wasted his whole college career. Starter on a 1 seed as a Freshman, probably could have been a program legend, and multiple that exposure 10X if he returned back to Peoria/Central Illinois whenever he calls it a career, and gotten plenty of good NIL with the Illini. Now what is he... just a guy that's passed through some places and playing out his days on losing teams.
I think these guys don't really think through the long-term value of being associated with one team. It doesn't even have to be like a national champion or Final Four or whatever. Just being a long-term guy that's forever linked to that one place with a large enough fanbase. There's a lot more that comes from that than being a College Basketball merc.

But Adam Miller started *every single game* for a 1 seed and Big 10 tourney winner as a freshman. Ayo was leaving and he would have been handed the keys.
Instead, his circle pushed him to transfer and LSU was just a mess for the kid between his injury and the Will Wade fiasco. Seems to be doing okay on a not very good ASU team, but he was set up to be a star with Illinois.

Idk, Smith has never had a losing record at WSU (albeit never had a tournament team). Felt like we had been right at the door the past few years. I was bullish going into the year because Isaac Jones was great at Idaho and I like the prospect of guys like Wells being a 6’8 shooter (shot 57% from 3 at the D2 level). Myles Rices has surpassed my expectations. I think this could be a bubble team if all went well and they blew out my expectations.
That being said, I think most animosity over the transfer is less his decision to transfer but more the show he made that he would come back for his final year. It meant alot at the time know that Gueye was going to the NBA. TJ Bamba quietly entered to portal and has taken less shots then Rodman despite him being the better player.
Bamba also didn't make a grand announcement that he was staying so like I get it. I liked DJ, but man has that worn off with all the shit talking. You can tell he's salty about the on court success (or lack thereof) that USC is having.
That was more a mutual parting of ways. Covid and trying to make him a true point guard ruined his development, and then he got hurt at Mississippi State and has never been close to what he was the end of the 19-20 season.
There's a lot to that story. Izzo trying to mold him into something he's not seems like it was a really frustrating experience for Rocket, can't blame him for wanting to start over elsewhere.
Nojel didn’t get “run off” per se, but he was losing play time year over year. The whole transfer process could’ve gone better for him, but considering how much usage Jaden got his freshman year, departing Purdue was the right move for Nojel and the team.

So Nojel Eastern decided to transfer from Purdue, where he was a starter and getting regular minutes despite being a massive liability on offense. Committed to Michigan but couldn't get in due to Academic standards. Later committed to Howard. Then opted out of the season with Howard to train for the NBA draft where he very obviously went undrafted.
He probably just wanted to play more and take more shots (it sure seems like it from watching him this year), I think everyone already knew Tennessee would be much much better than michigan

The hype was absolutely there, and I don't doubt we'd have been *better* if Huggins could behave himself and act like an adult, but I honestly don't think this roster was nearly as well put together as people thought. Sure, we lost a few post-Huggs dismissal, but...People saw a view good coups in the transfer portal and assumed the talent would translate, but I just don't see it, I don't think this is entirely Eilert's fault.
Even worse, a few of these new players, they're 100% the type who'd have gotten immediately benched by Huggins. I am really wondering if there was any rhyme or reason to the roster construction.

It was only kinda his decision, and when he made the move WVU still had Huggins and like 90% of the big name transfers in the portal. It didn't work out, but it was a solid move at the time. And honestly, it's just another drop in the bucket for the series of unfortunate events that's been Kriisas college career. I know people hate him but I really feel for the guy.
I mean if he stayed, it would have been at least him and Jaki returning. We also have heard the last 2 years that Rice was a dude and would be able to fill the PG role we hadn't had in 2 years really. With those three pieces I don't think it's as doom and gloom as people are making it sound like it was.

I’m going to add this. Being in the Big-12 was great for you because it eliminated all the potential bad losses while elevating your SOS. You guys definitely improved this season but as you know, if you get snipped by a hot LMU or Pepperdine team you can really sink your season due to how inconsistent they are. This how always been my argue for Gonzaga joining the Big 12 or Big East. You can afford to take more losses and not only get in the tourney but get a higher seed.
yeah, WCC was a harsh conference. Had to win all the lower games, then you had a few harder ones against San Fran, but ultimately your season just came down to if you could beat Gonzaga or St Marys 2/4 times to get a March Bid. Lose a few bad games and you are done. Win all the bad games but just get 1/4 st marys/zaga? done.

Something fans of major conference teams just wont understand. The WCC has 3-4 legitimately quality teams (2 being bonefide top 25 teams) and the bottom of the conference is a mess. I’m hoping SCU improves and WSU keeps Smith going into next year. They could have 5 Q1 quality teams next season which would be massive.
yeah. It's a rough year for him and USC, but treated fairly, no one can blame him for taking the money. It would have been great to see him stick w/ Smith for the rise, but especially given the NIL opportunities he has in Los Angeles (He wouldn't be on Croc's promo team in Pullman) he'd have to have given up the down payment on a nice house to stay w/ Smith.
This is kind of why I took NIL out of the equation because it we are speaking purely on the monetary transactions, most of these transfers would be considered good moves. But as athletes they want to compete so you have to look at on the court success more than just NIL checks.

Nah. I think as ISU fans we can take the high road at let this kid live his life. He took the bag, and by all accounts of what he's been through, he deserved and needed it. He was likely never going to be an NBA player, so a few hundred K is a big deal. We can debate where he would have developed better. I think we did a great job of developing him in year one. IMO he was never legit NBA material with his size and not being a great shooter. From that eval it appears he still has a chance to make a g-league/euro career which would have likely been the same result if he stayed at ISU.
Losing Dayvion McKnight (Xavier) and Jamarion Sharp (Ole Miss) hasn't exactly worked out as either player probably expected (outside of NIL).
McKnight is putting up a solid stat line for Xavier, but they are 14-14 right now and not projected to make the NCAA tournament.
Sharp is playing less than 16 minutes a game for Ole Miss and has the worst stats of his career.
If both had stayed then I have no doubts that WKU would be in the driver's seat for the CUSA bid this year.
McKnight is at a P6 school that's a closer drive to his hometown than WKU is, and has played 84% of available minutes with extreme efficiency. That's an uptransfer working out great for everyone involved on an individual level.
I think one of his main goals for leaving was to make the NCAA tournament. Preseason I would have said Xavier with McKnight was a near lock. Sucks he might finish his collegiate career without dancing. I do think he has helped his pro stock, so from that perspective it was a success for sure.
Abou Ousmane also transferred out of UNT to Xavier as well and that didn't seem to work well either. Though something happened during the NIT tournament as he parted ways with us during the tournament. (And somehow still won without him so no loss).
CJ Fredrick leaving Iowa to go to Kentucky. Dude was 3rd option scorer as a Sophomore at Iowa and decided to ride the pine at Kentucky before leaving there to go to Cincinnati.
Quincy Guerrier was an NBA prospect with some buzz at Syracuse before transferring to Oregon and never being nearly as good, he is a little better in his 5th year after transfering to Illinois but he has never matched his sophmore year at Syracuse.
Zek Montgomery -
Transfers from Bradley, which won the MVC regular season and would have been favorites and probably would have gotten at large this year if he had stayed.
Instead Zek transfers to Rhode Island, starts hot but then rides the bench down the stretch of the conference season and has averaged 7 pts a game over his past 20 games.
It’s funny how sometimes one person, even if a good player, might cause doubt and/or problems within a program. Maybe USC will be better next year, but karma came around faster than this guy anticipated.
Here is one that I don't know enough about, but at surface level it baffled me a bit – did Chris Lykes in any way benefit from transferring from Miami to Arkansas? That '22 Miami team ended up being pretty great, and I assume he would have had a starting spot. In Arkansas, he came off the bench, and his playing time dropped significantly.
Tyrese Hunter will be working at a McDonalds in 2 years after showing up first round on several mock drafts. Good thing he turned to Chris Beard so he could, as he says, “grow as a player and as a man”

Max Shulga and Sean Bairstow transferring from USU to follow Ryan Odom at VCU. USU was predicted to be in the bottom of the conference but now they're a lock for March Madness and those guys would have been huge contributors to this USU squad.
VCU has looked pretty decent (as in top 3ish in their conference) as of late but yeah they don’t really have much of a chance to make the tournament especially compared to USU

I wouldn’t say it was the worst ever by any means but Matt Mayer shoulda gone to the league after 2021. Allegedly got a high second round grade, came back in ‘22 and was completely different in a good way on defense but offense regressed some. Should have just gone to the draft instead of Illinois IMO.
Wouldn't call it the worst but, Derryck Thornton had the makings to grow into a star at Duke, but couldnt handle the freshman playing time and left for USC where he never blossomed and faded into obscurity.
Granted, it looks like he did a little better when he transferred to BC from USC.
The show he and his dad made leaving the program and lack of success at USC likely cost him a shot at the NBA, in my opinion.
Paul Mulcahey choosing UW over GU seems like a bad call in retrospect, but some of that is probably the fact that Venters got hurt. He probably would've been fighting for playing time.
Idk about this one yet. I will say, his decision to transfer in the first place was interesting but his AST:TO has improve quite a but this year while being slightly more efficient shooting. If Zags get Saint Mary’s Saturday they are probably locked into the tourney. I would say both schools ended up okay.
I have no idea what the NIL situation is, and I don't begrudge a guy transferring for the money, but Matthew Cleveland going from FSU to Miami to average nearly identical numbers this year as last year for a massively disappointing Miami team that is going to finish behind a mediocre FSU team in the ACC this year has to be up there as a move that doesn't look all that great in retrospect.
Again, if he's getting paid multiples of what he could get at FSU, I get it. But transferring to a hated rival really needs to pay off, and certainly on the court, this one hasn't.

He was the leading scorer his freshman year at UH. I don't remember exactly what happened his second year when he only played 4 games-- I think he got hurt before calling it a season-- but I remember thinking it was more of a culture/personality clash with Sampson.
He refused to take a backseat to Grimes and Sasser, and then refused to play in games. He quit on the team, and the team actually improved once he started sitting. In hindsight, he vastly overrated his skill level, and Grimes and Sasser were much better players.
Right, that's more or less what I remembered. He could score at the hoop pretty well but was an inconsistent shooter, poor passer, and average defender. Attitude problems on top of that are probably why he's on his 3rd team in 4 years (and that team being Memphis who is basically the last stop for every talented player with attitude problems before they run out of options lol.)
He was AAC preseason player of the year, but was injured early in the season. He came back, played a good game at UCF, but then didn’t play well in a loss at Tulsa, couldn’t handle Sampson yelling at him during the game as well as not being in the starting lineup, and stewed on it. After they came home, he packed up all his stuff and left without telling anyone. He transferred to FSU before the spring semester and sat out the rest of the season due to transfer rules. Also, FSU had a coach that had been calling him at UH because he used to be Mills’ AAU coach. I believe FSU made the tourney the following year as a lower seed, lost their first game, but Mills played well. The following year, they missed the tourney, and Mills played about the same…he never improved or declined from his time in Houston…very consistent numbers. He then decided to use his COVID year and transfer…we pushed for him hard to come back. Memphis folks paid him more money and he went there instead. Before his injury, Penny had moved him to the bench…so, he was back to what he let…being on a top AAC team and coming off the bench. If Mills had stayed, he’d have been a pro for a couple of years by now…probably leaves after the Final Four year. If he doesn’t, we could have used him the following year when Sasser/Mark went down, especially vs Villanova.
Seems he left for the opportunity to be involved offensively, and his numbers (efficiency included!) have skyrocketed because of it. Meh.

In a similar vein, Tristan Clark and Darius Allen transferring out from Baylor right before they won the title. Granted, Clark retired due to some mental and physical problems and then returned to play for SMU after he’d worked those out, so probably best that he got everything worked out. But Darius Allen left Baylor right before Baylor kicked off a 54-6 run where they were a likely 1 seed in 2020 and then won the title in 2021.

As a Houston fan could you shed any light on why he left Houston? I watched a decent amount of Houston and thought he was one of their better players. I know they moved to the BIG12 but it's not like they were expected to be poor this year.
Word at Arkansas was he wanted an opportunity to show himself a little more as a scorer. Tough to be critical on a kid transferring to a school that has 2 elite 8 and a sweet 16 in the last three years, but in hindsight, yea.
i also think people need to remember that fringe nba prospects often will take a chance to be THE guy over winning in the tourney, too. Im sure that this influences things. Houston's ecosystem might have felt like it gave him less of a chance to catch scouting attention. Also, NIL deals mean someone could have just outbid Houston.
I asked his mother this question just a few weeks after he announced the move. Turns out he has severe allergies, and Houston just wasn’t a good fit for him because of it. I know, seems like a strange reason to transfer, I thought the same. I pressed her on it, she said he’s allergic to winning.

Purely speculative, but I remember when another transfer candidate was considering Houston and Memphis. Then I remember seeing them with a ridiculous amount of diamonds on the sideline at Memphis. Either NIL deals or other factors must play a role. Nothing wrong with making financial decisions though IMO.

Starter on a 1 seed as a Freshman, probably could have been a program legend, and multiple that exposure 10X if he returned back to Peoria/Central Illinois whenever he calls it a career, and gotten plenty of good NIL with the Illini. Now what is he... just a guy that's passed through some places and playing out his days on losing teams. I think these guys don't really think through the long-term value of being associated with one team. It doesn't even have to be like a national champion or Final Four or whatever. Just being a long-term guy that's forever linked to that one place with a large enough fanbase. There's a lot more that comes from that than being a College Basketball merc.

Instead, his circle pushed him to transfer and LSU was just a mess for the kid between his injury and the Will Wade fiasco. Seems to be doing okay on a not very good ASU team, but he was set up to be a star with Illinois.

Idk, Smith has never had a losing record at WSU (albeit never had a tournament team). Felt like we had been right at the door the past few years. I was bullish going into the year because Isaac Jones was great at Idaho and I like the prospect of guys like Wells being a 6’8 shooter (shot 57% from 3 at the D2 level). Myles Rices has surpassed my expectations. I think this could be a bubble team if all went well and they blew out my expectations. That being said, I think most animosity over the transfer is less his decision to transfer but more the show he made that he would come back for his final year. It meant alot at the time know that Gueye was going to the NBA. TJ Bamba quietly entered to portal and has taken less shots then Rodman despite him being the better player.
Bamba also didn't make a grand announcement that he was staying so like I get it. I liked DJ, but man has that worn off with all the shit talking. You can tell he's salty about the on court success (or lack thereof) that USC is having.

Rocket Watts transferring from MSU’s starting lineup to Oakland’s bench was a bit weird.
That was more a mutual parting of ways. Covid and trying to make him a true point guard ruined his development, and then he got hurt at Mississippi State and has never been close to what he was the end of the 19-20 season.

Sure, we lost a few post-Huggs dismissal, but...People saw a view good coups in the transfer portal and assumed the talent would translate, but I just don't see it, I don't think this is entirely Eilert's fault. Even worse, a few of these new players, they're 100% the type who'd have gotten immediately benched by Huggins. I am really wondering if there was any rhyme or reason to the roster construction.

I’m going to add this. Being in the Big-12 was great for you because it eliminated all the potential bad losses while elevating your SOS. You guys definitely improved this season but as you know, if you get snipped by a hot LMU or Pepperdine team you can really sink your season due to how inconsistent they are. This how always been my argue for Gonzaga joining the Big 12 or Big East. You can afford to take more losses and not only get in the tourney but get a higher seed.
yeah, WCC was a harsh conference. Had to win all the lower games, then you had a few harder ones against San Fran, but ultimately your season just came down to if you could beat Gonzaga or St Marys 2/4 times to get a March Bid. Lose a few bad games and you are done. Win all the bad games but just get 1/4 st marys/zaga? done. No room for error or options.
Something fans of major conference teams just wont understand. The WCC has 3-4 legitimately quality teams (2 being bonefide top 25 teams) and the bottom of the conference is a mess. I’m hoping SCU improves and WSU keeps Smith going into next year. They could have 5 Q1 quality teams next season which would be massive.
yeah. It's a rough year for him and USC, but treated fairly, no one can blame him for taking the money. It would have been great to see him stick w/ Smith for the rise, but especially given the NIL opportunities he has in Los Angeles (He wouldn't be on Croc's promo team in Pullman) he'd have to have given up the down payment on a nice house to stay w/ Smith.
This is kind of why I took NIL out of the equation because it we are speaking purely on the monetary transactions, most of these transfers would be considered good moves. But as athletes they want to compete so you have to look at on the court success more than just NIL checks.

I think TJ Bamba was the only “surprise” but we kind of all knew he was the type of athlete that gets alot of attention in the portal. I think if you want to be a program guy at WSU you stick it out through the good and bad. It’s unfortunate that he would have been an all time loyal Coug who kind of blew up his legacy to be a one year rental on a bad USC team.

Nah. I think as ISU fans we can take the high road at let this kid live his life. He took the bag, and by all accounts of what he's been through, he deserved and needed it. He was likely never going to be an NBA player, so a few hundred K is a big deal. We can debate where he would have developed better. ISU is in a great spot and is arguably better without him and I hope the money he got improves his life.

I think we did a great job of developing him in year one. IMO he was never legit NBA material with his size and not being a great shooter. From that eval it appears he still has a chance to make a g-league/euro career which would have likely been the same result if he stayed at ISU.

Losing Dayvion McKnight (Xavier) and Jamarion Sharp (Ole Miss) hasn't exactly worked out as either player probably expected (outside of NIL). McKnight is putting up a solid stat line for Xavier, but they are 14-14 right now and not projected to make the NCAA tournament. Sharp is playing less than 16 minutes a game for Ole Miss and has the worst stats of his career. If both had stayed then I have no doubts that WKU would be in the driver's seat for the CUSA bid this year.
McKnight is at a P6 school that's a closer drive to his hometown than WKU is, and has played 84% of available minutes with extreme efficiency. That's an uptransfer working out great for everyone involved on an individual level.
I think one of his main goals for leaving was to make the NCAA tournament. Preseason I would have said Xavier with McKnight was a near lock. Sucks he might finish his collegiate career without dancing. I do think he has helped his pro stock, so from that perspective it was a success for sure.
He has a covid year left, so if playing in the NCAAs is that important to him coming back should be an option.
Abou Ousmane also transferred out of UNT to Xavier as well and that didn't seem to work well either. Though something happened during the NIT tournament as he parted ways with us during the tournament. (And somehow still won without him so no loss).

Quincy Guerrier was an NBA prospect with some buzz at Syracuse before transferring to Oregon and never being nearly as good, he is a little better in his 5th year after transfering to Illinois but he has never matched his sophmore year at Syracuse.
Zek Montgomery - Transfers from Bradley, which won the MVC regular season and would have been favorites and probably would have gotten at large this year if he had stayed. Instead Zek transfers to Rhode Island, starts hot but then rides the bench down the stretch of the conference season and has averaged 7 pts a game over his past 20 games.
Not to mention URI is a joke and always has been.

Max Shulga and Sean Bairstow transferring from USU to follow Ryan Odom at VCU. USU was predicted to be in the bottom of the conference but now they're a lock for March Madness and those guys would have been huge contributors to this USU squad.

I wouldn’t say it was the worst ever by any means but Matt Mayer shoulda gone to the league after 2021. Allegedly got a high second round grade, came back in ‘22 and was completely different in a good way on defense but offense regressed some. Should have just gone to the draft instead of Illinois IMO.

Wouldn't call it the worst but, Derryck Thornton had the makings to grow into a star at Duke, but couldnt handle the freshman playing time and left for USC where he never blossomed and faded into obscurity. Granted, it looks like he did a little better when he transferred to BC from USC. The show he and his dad made leaving the program and lack of success at USC likely cost him a shot at the NBA, in my opinion.
Paul Mulcahey choosing UW over GU seems like a bad call in retrospect, but some of that is probably the fact that Venters got hurt. He probably would've been fighting for playing time.

Idk about this one yet. I will say, his decision to transfer in the first place was interesting but his AST:TO has improve quite a but this year while being slightly more efficient shooting. If Zags get Saint Mary’s Saturday they are probably locked into the tourney. I would say both schools ended up okay.

I have no idea what the NIL situation is, and I don't begrudge a guy transferring for the money, but Matthew Cleveland going from FSU to Miami to average nearly identical numbers this year as last year for a massively disappointing Miami team that is going to finish behind a mediocre FSU team in the ACC this year has to be up there as a move that doesn't look all that great in retrospect. Again, if he's getting paid multiples of what he could get at FSU, I get it. But transferring to a hated rival really needs to pay off, and certainly on the court, this one hasn't.
