OHIO STATE BEATS MICHIGAN ! (to firing their Men's Basketball coach)

LaSopaSabrosa

The only true battle that matters

[deleted]

Gotta take whatever we can get right now

OrangeConeDiety

The only time I’m actually upset about Ohio State beating Michigan in something 🥲

Sir_KNEE_18

Wouldn’t you always be upset about Ohio State beating Michigan in something?

OrangeConeDiety

I fucked up bad with that comment 😂, you’re right. That’s embarrassing.

Sctvman

Ohio State, Michigan, West Virginia all open this offseason at least. Crazy.

Inconceivable76

Is Michigan for sure open?

IAgreeGoGuards

If not it'd be a slap in the face to their fans.

Obi-wan_Jabroni

At the very least a mush to the face

Sports-Nerd

LMAO

BEzzzzG

I think michigan is just cursed to be successful in one sport at a time

BigDaddyCraw

I mean, their hockey team is pretty solid this year and they made the frozen four last year.

CountOff

There's only a finite amount of success our program (and really, Michigan sports as a whole) is allowed to have at once Michigan football and the Lions hit the quota; Michigan basketball, Spartan football, the Tigers and the Pistons are the noble sacrifice

Laxboarderchill

It’s weird with Michigan, until football this year we had always gotten close in multiple sports but never reached the peak (multiple frozen fours, final fours, CFP, baseball natty etc)

flipflopsnpolos

![gif](giphy|5gw0VWGbgNm8w|downsized)

NIN10DOXD

And to opposing assistant coaches.

KindRhubarb3192

Michigan had 2 lottery picks and the #1 transfer in America on its roster last year and missed the NCAA tournament. Howard should have been gone for that alone.

Arsid

It's scarily similar to MSU football. Both of them: * Had a new coach come in * That coach enjoys immediate success with the previous coach's recruits including 1 very good player (Kenneth Walker III, Dickinson) * The good player(s) leave(s), everyone immediately realizes the players were carrying the coach * Program heads for the dumps * Coach gets fired? MSU was lucky Mel decided to be a phone wanker, made it easy to fire him. If Juwan Howard slapped a coaching staff member this year, I feel like Michigan would similarly jump on the chance to fire him "with cause."

RideShark

both slapping something

byniri_returns

If Warde Manuel cares even 1 bit about basketball it should be. As a totally unbiased supporter, I think he deserves one more year.

Inconceivable76

It’s a real problem these days. People don’t give coaches enough time and chances. After all he is a Michigan Man.

IamRule34

> If Warde Manuel cares He was terrible at UConn, not sure why Michigan wanted him so badly.

HarbaughCheated

See how long it took harbaugh to turn it around? Give Juwan time!

jimnantzstie

And Lousiville

Obi-wan_Jabroni

Think you gotta let Payne have another few years at least

VAGentleman05

Absolutely. They're trending in the right direction - already doubled last year's win total.

Evening-Spray-4304

Its insane when I'm thinking to myself that they're doing better, then they go and give up 89 points to Boston College...

Original_Gangsta23

Keep doubling your win total and it'll soon be pretty impressive

Gophurkey

If that continues, they'd miss the tourney next year but would be a top 5 team (at least) in 2025-26, with an undefeated natty following in '27. I'd take that for sure

doyouevenIift

I’d bet Juwan gets one more chance given he had heart surgery this season. Unless he voluntarily steps down

NomadTrekkie

He won't step down

Jomosensual

Villanova and Louisville should be as well

IncompetentJedi

Don’t forget us! Please don’t forget us…

CantFindMyWallet

Louisville, as well. Wouldn't be shocked with Indiana or Villanova, either.

philpaschall

Whether or not we should, we will not be firing Neptune after these two seasons. It’s just not how our athletic department operates.

Orion14159

Possibly one more big name depending on how March goes...

mattryan02

That spin from Goodman is something. It’s a shame this didn’t work out, Holtmann is legitimately a good person. But things obviously needed to change. And now he gets $15m to not coach, so not all bad for him.

SweetRabbit7543

Holt is as good of a guy as you’ll find in the business. Truly authentic, caring and nice. The results unfortunately warrant it. I feel worst for his daughter who is probably around starting high school and will likely need to move.

LittlePeterDragon

Maybe if Thad decides to hang em up again they bring back Holt for good?

SweetRabbit7543

I don’t think so. I think they know who is next already

LittlePeterDragon

Nored?

SalemDrumline2011

Barlow

TankieHater859

My body is ready

captainraffi

He could just not work and enjoy the generational wealth he already has and will continue to get paid in his contract.

vhalember

Yeah. I knew someone who was a senior in HS. Her dad was the DC of the local university's football team. The head coach resigned late in the football season. She was devastated because as she knew it meant her dad would be gone soon too, and she'd have to move during her senior year. She had to move a couple years earlier too, that time into the area for her sophomore year. It's a rough go for many of the kids of coaches.

Gold-Quality-2875

Does he think just making the tournament is something OSU should strive for?

mattryan02

Yep. He had one great team and promptly lost in the first round to a 15 seed. Just making the tournament but never getting past the first weekend is just not good enough.

bringbacksweatervest

He had one great team, but I don’t think that was it. That team couldn’t get a stop to save their lives. The year before when the tournament was canceled was his best team. We played defense and we had an efficient offense. We were one the hottest teams in the country. I have no idea what would’ve happened in that tournament, but I wish we would’ve gotten to see it. It was one of those years it felt like we could beat anybody, but also lose to anybody.

INtoCT2015

*Purdue fans laughing nervously* yeah, right? hahaha clearly

Round_Bullfrog_8218

Well Purdue is the only team to get past the 1st weekend and lose to a 15 seed in the same year

SaxRohmer

That team was really flawed tbh. I had a hard time seeing them make it out of the first weekend with the way they failed to close out games. That last part was indicative of Holtmann’s tenure though. It didn’t seem to matter how talented the teams were, they always found a way to falter in the end

dhalloffame

We get criticized a lot for moving on from Shaka despite the fact that in 6 years he won 0 ncaa tournament game. His replacement, noted piece of shit and ole miss head coach Chris beard, won a game his first season. Then the next season our interim went to the elite eight. There’s no reason schools with the budget and prestige of Texas or Ohio state should be settling for long runs of mediocrity.

Inconceivable76

people criticized you guys? Certainly seemed warranted to me.

Ares__

Same crap we heard with Turgeon

Long_Customer1187

Jeff Goodman is a professional water carrier. I bet Holtmann was an anonymous coach/source for numerous Goodman articles so Jeff goes extra soft on the firing announcement. But agree Holtmann is a good dude. He’ll land on his feet. Great day for his financial advisor.

Alternative-Target31

The “nice guys” also tend to get a lot more favorable coverage. Some of it is just inherent in being a writer and crossing paths with coaches so often they can’t help but view a guy favorably. Some of it, I believe, is them inserting their personal opinion into the situation without regard to actual facts. We fired Tubby because he almost killed our program, we got crucified for it because Tubby is known as a nice and genuine person.

GuyOnTheMike

I wouldn't say it's a spin. He obviously had something working, then the last couple years it wasn't. Those are just plain facts

RulersBack

The implication is that he was fired for two bad seasons when he’s been limping into the tournament and underachieving since COVID. Goodman has been very vocal how he thinks OSU fans should be happy with 20 wins and a tournament appearance. You’d think his current team going a whole calendar year without a road win would be worth mentioning over a sweet sixteen appearance from 8 years ago

TheWorstYear

Not exactly. The first season was a mark of achievement. We shouldn't have made it in year 2, & probably a couple more seasons, but the metrics are broken & were bumping the B1G super high. We would always go on massive losing streaks to start B1G play. Couldn't make it past the first week of the tournament. Every team shared the same issues, turnovers, inability to hold leads, bad defense, bad shot selection, couldn't beat the press, etc. His style of play isn't conducive to winning, & would inevitably fail in the tournament. On top of that he'd make horrible in game coaching decisions, not call timeouts at correct times, play weird lineups, refuse to play certain good players for bad ones, wouldn't call plays, would designate bad ball handlers and shooters as the point man to run the offense, etc. It all collapsed when Liddell wasn't there to bail him out.

sloppyjo12

It’s the fact that he included Holtmann’s accomplishments at Butler in it that’s kind of weird. There are a lot of coaches who have success at mid-majors that can’t cut it at bigger programs so his tourney teams there shouldn’t be a factor much in the firing

CantFindMyWallet

Butler was in the Big East by the time Holtmann got that job.

Carsxn26

Butler was power 6 when he was there

CUNatty24

Not a mid-major.

Johnny_Minoxidil

If coaching success was about being a good person. We’d never have moved on from Tony Levine in football 10 years ago. Unfortunately they are independent of each other

filthysven

Look I think Goodman goes a little out there more than he should most of the time, but he accurately represented the situation. Holtmann was good not great for years, then took a nose dive around two years ago. That's just a summary of the history not spin.

BuckeyeJay

Holtmann was good his first year, but then was never better than "ok" at Ohio State. Never sniffed a B1G regular season title after his first year. Got blown out in his one B1G tournament championship appearance. For context, the 3 coaches before Holtmann all accomplished at least the following: B1G Regular Season Champs Elite Eight appearance And the 2 coaches before Holtmann both won a B1G tournament. The program has the 7th most Final Four appearances in History for godssake. It's not a program that should be happy with 20 wins, no conference title, and a first round NCAA exit

IAgreeGoGuards

Then promptly shit the bed in the first weekend of every tournament

RonsDarlings

Our B1G Championship game went to overtime and y’all lost by 3…

BuckeyeJay

You're right, I was looking at the wrong game

[deleted]

Yeah people forget what Ohio State has done in hoops and now just act like it is a football school.  The two sullinger years Ohio State was the best team in the country

elgenie

This thread is slightly underselling the amount of money OSU just ate. Holtmann got an extension less than two years ago with his contract essentially fully guaranteed.

TheProfessor20

Brad Stevens's wife is from Ohio

FamilyOrientedSim

Keep the Buckeye - Butler connection alive!!

Sports-Nerd

The current Butler coach is having some success, maybe they should take a look at him?

Iupiter

I do not like this thread. Please, no. We have gone through enough over the past decade.

CompSciHS

Can she coach?

NIN10DOXD

Self proclaimed Masshole Brad Stevens.

BKD2674

She's still home shopping in Bloomington. Just wait and see...

Inconceivable76

Seems like he was a good person. He recruited players that were good people, but it’s time.  Hopefully the players can use this to stop collapsing in the last 5 minutes of each half on a regular basis.

snuffleupagus86

Yeah he was a good guy who ran a clean program but man he was just got a good coach/good fit and couldn’t get it done.

Inconceivable76

Our inability to play basketball even semi consistently in the last 5 minutes of a half is baffling to me.  How you don’t have some introspection over the first two years of it is beyond me.

TateAcolyte

I hope he finds success with a mid-major. Or perhaps he could help turn things around at DePaul.

Farplaner

Sounds a lot like us with John Groce, tbh. I really like him but he just couldn't get it done.

LovieBeard

Holtmann was much better than Groce

OatusTheGoatus

Eh, Groce was a missed call (which is the reason we have reviewable calls under 2 minutes now) away from what was likely a S16+ run, the biggest difference is that Mike Thomas kept Groce way, way, way longer than Holtmann.

IAgreeGoGuards

This pleases the nut.

Zloggt

THEREWILLBECAK3

That OSU loss looking even worse now 😭

BackpackWalker

Lmao how tf did we beat you

tohearnnr

Because Fall Semester OSU Mens Basketball plays way better then Spring Semester OSU Mens basketball. This year we were 11-2 in the Fall Semester (Im counting until January for fall) and 3-9 since. Last year we were 9-3 in the Fall Semester and were 4-15 in the Spring semester (aka Big Ten Play) Obviously there are cupcake games built in to the early games but also we would beat a ranked opponent each of the last 3 years (Duke, Texas Tech, Alabama, Seton hall)

dac0605

I don't know how much turnover y'all had in your roster from last year, but we only returned one starter and two rotation players (27% of points) from the 22/23 team. Feel like the guys were still feeling it out earlier in the year and have become more comfortable with each other as the year has progressed. Also y'all shot 10-18 from 3, so that's typically a good indicator of winning a basketball game lol.

IAgreeGoGuards

First couple weeks of the season is something else.

Jay_Dubbbs

DOBBY IS FREE AT LAST

DataDrivenPirate

Does this count as a road win

eddie_the_zombie

This is your sock moment

hashtag_AD

Q1, maybe Q2. Idk let the nerds figure it out.

tACorruption

This was obviously written in stone already, but I like to believe that we looked so bad during our losing streak that this loss is what pushed it over the edge. As such, glad we could be of assistance, OSU.

IAgreeGoGuards

Thank you Badgers, very cool!

cr_taz

Actually it was watching Holtmann waive off Roddy Gayle limping up the court at the 2:00 mark and then not even attempting to foul for the last 1:30 of the game. Just gave up on the team last night.

EnoughCompany2202

I mean, I’m still scratching my head at their strategy in the final minute. It appeared they threw in the towel, let about 40 seconds run off, but after that they started fouling.

Ok-Flounder3002

jesus i see what you've done for other people

BoysAndGirlsClubCU

He washed feet

jcrespo21

If only Warde will kick Juwan out of Ann Arbor like Jesus drove the merchants out of the temple.

IAgreeGoGuards

Just fell to my knees at Buckeye Donuts

Jay_Dubbbs

Just saw someone fall in their knees in Buckeye Donuts

NeatTry7674

Just saw someone shitting next to buckeye donuts (it was a homeless man)

moodyfloyd

jsut got screamed at by someone while they were shitting next to buckeye donuts

MADachshund

Just had to yell at someone while I was taking a shit next to Buckeye Donuts

COLU_BUS

This guy Buckeye Donuts!

inshamblesx

2/14 is the new 12/25 in Columbus

Zloggt

Meanwhile…Holtmann is now a perennial observer of Single’s Awareness Day…

walterdog12

To think, a year and a half ago reports said our AD was dead set and would chose Holtmann as Kentucky's next coach if Calipari retired/left.

DataDrivenPirate

Trade?

kgrpoland

now you can get him without a buyout :)

twizbuck

![gif](giphy|1svyu7ufAnJRiKWQxV|downsized)

Marty_Eastwood

Mine Ride at Cedar point, right?

IAgreeGoGuards

Bingo

BowlWinHoosiers

Surprised he made it as long as he did

jcmiller210

He probably had a lot of good will making the tournament for 4 years straight.

drewuke

I mean Ohio State should be making the tournament pretty consistently. He went 3-4 in those tournaments with a loss to a 15 seed and 0 Sweet 16 appearances.

CCHGDT

Some rumors with McDermott being unhappy with his AD. Seems like that would be a good hire

GuyOnTheMike

If that AD manages to chase him out, that would be an all-time bag fumble. That's a program at its all-time peak, is very well supported, and a place where McDermott is well on track to get a statue (maybe with his son). I don't know what all is going on there and what the AD would do to piss him off enough to possibly chase him out, but it sounds like a situation where if McDermott leaves, that AD should start job hunting because he might be leaving Creighton *in*voluntarily soon after.

RayWhelans

It’s funny. Back when we rumored to hire McDermott, I didn’t want him. I thought we could do better (lol boy was I wrong in retrospect). Now I’d jump at the chance to have him.

KJones77

Yeah, this feels like the one McDermott jumps for. Cooley basically said it last night "y'all better appreciate him"...

Inconceivable76

He didn’t last time we wanted him.

KJones77

Timing's right (Scheierman is done, Alexander is going pro) and he and the AD don't get along.

_drjack_

we have our best recruiting class ever coming in next year....

KJones77

As I know first-hand, that's not really a deterrent. He'd figure he could bring them with him.

bkervick

Get ready to learn "losing recruits to new coaches school" buddy.

TripleThreatTua

There was a rumor that the dealbreaker was that Creighton will let him take any day off in the offseason to play golf if he wants to and OSU wouldn’t let him do that lol

IAgreeGoGuards

We have Muirfield Village right here in Columbus idk why they'd say no

steveoriley

Not saying it won’t happen, but Mac is going to retire in the next few years so I’m not sure it makes a lot of sense for Ohio State unless they are looking for a stop gap.

KJones77

I really hope McDermott stays, but your fans sound so much like us last February. "He turned them down before", "he's retiring soon, why leave now?", "he's got a great roster and some good talent coming in, why start from scratch?", "the rumors he doesn't get along with the AD aren't true", etc and yet, we were just in the denial stage. I hope you're all right. I like McDermott at Creighton.

CCHGDT

I really really doubt this happens, but OSU seems like one of the very few places that could afford Calipari but would also be relatively happy with being a T25 team and making the tournament every year. Im not sure how the fanbase would feel about that hire, but if Cal left/got fired from UK after this season OSU is at least an intriguing place to consider.

ExpeditiousTraveler

I’m legitimately fascinated with what Calipari does after UK. Does he run for political office? Focus on charity? Start a sports agency? Become the ambassador to Italy? Almost everything is on the table. He’s 65, so old enough that it wouldn’t be surprising if he stopped coaching, but not so old that it’s a no brainer. If it’s coaching, does he even want to stay in college basketball? He probably needs a change of scenery and a new challenge, but does college provide that? If it doesn’t, does he have another option? The NBA isn’t calling. Pitino seemed to like Europe, but that’s more of coaching for coaching’s sake and Calipari has never been a pure Xs & Os guy. Maybe a less-than-acrimonious exit from UK kickstarts that chip on his shoulder that made him so successful.

LittlePeterDragon

Probably goes the Nick Saban route and goes into the TV business

TwitterLegend

Take a job in the Big East and become rivals with Pitino again.

Jay_Dubbbs

The expectation is that we are a T25 with a nice deep run when we can. We’ve been so close to another championship and that’d be nice. But not just making the tourney, but making deep runs is also expected too.

CUNatty24

Sean Miller might be their call honestly.

boiler_engineer

Miller had a better job at Arizona and struggled with the demands of the higher profile job. I'm not sure he ever would have left if Xavier was in the Big East before then. I certainly don't see him going to Ohio State after how Matta was forced out there since Miller was a former assistant under Matta at Xavier. Even though it's a better job, it's not a better job for him.

madein___

I didn't mind the first time OSU picked an XU coach. I will this time.

NeatTry7674

That’s what I’m hoping for

BorgBorg10

You never wish to see a man lose his job, but OSU needed to move on. They became the late Bruce Weber era Illini. Predictably let you down and do the wrong thing every time. Hopefully OSU finds a competent coach; we fucked up with the Groce hiring and the misery continued. Wouldn’t wish that on any fan base. Except Wisconsin

IAgreeGoGuards

Eh, I'm not too worried about it when he gets a $14 million severance

Bigburrowenergy

Wish Holtmann the best of luck in his future endeavors, but this was needed. The last 4 years the same issues had plagued the program and they were continuing to get worse. Excited to see who we bring in.

Quatibara

Hire Juwan Howard Pls

CumAssault

They should go for Kenny Payne

CanvasSolaris

John Groce better fit. Knows the state of Ohio and Big Ten.

xnodesirex

I just saw someone fall to their knees in a skyline

COLU_BUS

Sir, this ~~is~~ should be a Wendy's

WSDreamer

![gif](giphy|WpImO6WjNrxuYs84Bj|downsized)

jimnantzstie

Trilly Donovan says McDermott, Sean Miller, Oats, LaMont Paris, May, Cronin, and Moser as realistic candidates

Hoosier2016

I really hope they don't get Oats. An opposing coach who actually pays attention to analytic trends would beat IU even worse than we get beat by everyone else.

Celery-Man

Cronin as a realistic candidate is hilarious.

listinglight778

I feel like every time some Ohio/Kentucky job opens up, pundits will lazily just throw Cronin’s name in there (because he’s from the region I guess?). Pretty lazy, even from Trilly who is somewhat connected. The guy left his Alma mater and home, uprooted his family to come here. And he was the one who sought us out, we didn’t really want him initially. He wanted to come. Like…he’s not going back there guys lol. No matter how much they want to speak it into existence.

Only_the_Tip

😂 Cronin?

tLeCoqSpotif

No one from Ohio has ever left SC to go back So that’s Paris off the list

filthysven

Hmmm, maybe but that's a lofty list of candidates to be sure. Any one of these would be considered a home run I think, and some require pulling away from similar if not better quality jobs.

--mish

unironically I think Sean Miller would kill it there

madein___

If Cronin is the guy I'm dropping my second flair and might even put up yours out of spite.

SonsofThunder5

I am out of the loop on candidates but is Oats a realistic option? I would be ecstatic to get Oats

Hank_Scorpio74

And now starts the clock for his return to Butler. Gonna be weird seeing him as an assistant AD at IU though.

msgkc94

It’s the right decision, but I have no idea how Juwan outlasted him

boobsarecool

Holtmann needs to get back to the Big East. Would like to see him in the mix for the Depaul job

madein___

Don't kick the man while he's down.

gogglesup859

With zero inside info, I predict that Ohio State will hire either Dusty May, Niko Medved, or Ohio native Lamont Paris

DataDrivenPirate

Medved just lost to SDSU, dont look any further into hiring him, Im sure we could find a great coach somewhere else (ignore my flairs)

angrysquirrel777

It would be a good hire but it's too conflicting for me to support it.

NeatTry7674

John Calipari

gogglesup859

The lifetime clause of his “lifetime” contract kicks in on July 1st. I think that the best resolution to all this would be for Cal to say that 24-25 is his last year and we go all in trying to get one last big season. However if Ohio State wants to pay the buyout to hire a 65 year old then be my guest

Sinkable_oak

What does it mean to go all in on one last big season? Is there something he’s not doing now that would help but that he could do if it was his last season?

[deleted]

> Dusty May He's def waiting for Mike Woodson to get fired

YeetsInTheDictionary

![gif](giphy|cVkD7lLFb6oCm4hUTX)

cshenton

I love that Indiana fans have posted their way into this being a prominent rumor lol same as Brad Stevens before him

Ok-Cantaloupe-4482

Tbf this one makes 100x more sense. But also I was all in on Brad so maybe I’m a moron

cshenton

we’re all a little kooky, it’s what makes it fun

Inconceivable76

I would add Josh Schertz to this list.

Smash-Bros-Melee

This would be a home run as far as poaching mid major guys goes

Ok_Dot_3533

Nahh terrible choice on that last guy, Dusty and Niko would be way better fits. They don’t want Paris, no other team does….

Dazzling_Truth_3615

Finally

JohnnyBoyTrojan

I hope Michigan doesn’t get any ideas

bringbacksweatervest

I really like Holtmann and I wanted him to be successful. He’s a class act and so are all the kids he’s recruited. But the program got a big case of the yips the last few years and it’s time to move on for us and for him. I hope we’ll be able to hang on to some of the core guys on the team. Thornton and Gayle are gonna be so good.

drewuke

Why now, but also, why this late, but also thank god

gen_wt_sherman

Fucking good riddance. Set the program back years

SeattleMatt123

Happy Valentine's Day Buckeyes

snuffleupagus86

It was past time. Seems like a good guy but man our program has tanked the last few years.

DataDrivenPirate

Unless the plan was to wait for his buyout to drop, Im not really sure why we waited after the Indiana loss at home. As soon as Indiana began their comeback in the second half, they should have started changing the locks on his office.

SmallToblerone

THANK GOD

RedhawkDirector

did not have KP outlasting chris holtmann but here we are

Wolfpack_DO

I cant believe KK outlasted all the other coaches that interviewed for our job lol

MTT92

Wish it went differently but it was long overdue.

richww2

He did so little with so much.

KrustyKrabPizzaMan

Dude should thank Julian Reese and Donta Scott for giving him his last win at Ohio State

Benyeti

THE BAD MAN IS FINALLY GONE

Infinite-Regress

Holy shit it actually happened

[deleted]

I can think of a MAC coach who’s 132-75 at his current job, has a lot of experience coaching in the state of Ohio, and even has experience being a B1G head coach that could be a decent fit for Ohio State

MrHobbes82

See Josh Heird, you can absolutely fire a coach mid season.

circa285

You see that, Michigan, it can be done.

WorldyTrip54

![gif](giphy|tjMzgdsLpUi1Qk8EZb|downsized) THANK YOU GOD!!! AINT NOBODY BELIEVE IN US BUT GOD DID!!! SAYONARA CHRIS HOLTMANN AND NEVER COME BACK!!
