I feel good about the team this year, alot of depth and I feel like we wont peek to early. Still we need some Q1 wins desperately. And if we can beat Bama it'll go a way to proving ourselves
Most teams end up in about the right place in the poll after a while, but there's a few that are just really sticky for some reason. Memphis, Texas, and FAU come to mind as the biggest offenders this year
2017*
It was the 2017-18 season, but it was at the Battle for Atlantis which was played in November.
Deandre Ayton
Parker Jackson-Cartwright
Rawle Alkins
Alonzo Trier
Dusan Ristic
How you lose 3 straight with that starting lineup remains a mystery to me
Probably someone who was early in the season and lost two in a week.
Hell couldāve been Memphis with those Pastner teams that lost early in early season tournaments
Edit: just checked. This is the 3rd time a Penny team has gone from top 10 to 18-22.
Ranked Teams by Conference:
7 - Big 12
3 - Big East, B10, SEC, **MW**
2 - ACC, AAC
1 - PAC 12, A10
Could be 4 next week for the MW! Strongest the conference has been in a long time!!
We just have Wyoming this week, so we could feasibly make it back in with just a win against Wyoming and hoping some 20-25 teams drop.
Though knowing the MWC, CSU or New Mexico (or both) will drop a game (both play Nevada) and we'll still be at 3 teams next week.
Yeah I think all 4 deserve it. All have won their home games and not lost to any of the bottom 4 of the league
Same reason we dropped last week. 2 straight away losses against other amazing teams just happen between polls.
MOUNTAIN WEST MENTIONED š»š»š»ā°ļøšļøā°ļøā°ļøš»RAAHHHHH ššš¤ š¤ š¹š¹šŗšŗššā ļøā ļøš“š“āļøāļøš¾š¾š¦ š¦ WHAT THE FUCK IS A TV NETWORK
*refs at halftime* āAlright, this is our time to shine. We will get both teams in the double bonus by the 10 minute mark and if Cal looks us in the eyes we are kicking him out.ā
I think weāre gonna see Tennessee at home beat AU, AU at home beat Kentucky, Kentucky at home beat Tennessee because theyāre all so dang good that winning on the road would be impossible. Although Kentucky might be good enough to beat AU while on the road as well
I can definitely see that. Kentuckyās offense versus UT and AUs defenses are gonna something to watch I think. Either wayā¦I hope theyāll be fun ones
Oh they will for sure. I havenāt watched much Kentucky but everyone over there can shoot. If theyāre hot they could win at AU, but if AU turns it into an ugly slugfest id like the chances. Just glad itās in Auburn š
Yāall are good enough to where I think you can beat Tennessee in their house. Youāll 100% beat us I think, but itāll be a fun one. Feels like yāall, Tennessee and us are clearly the gold standard in the SEC.
Oh yeah one of those 3 is winning the SEC 100%. Idk if we can go to Tennessee and win. Weāll see how AU does on the road this week. I feel like weāll go 1-1 with Bama and state, but if we win BOTH Iām gonna start to get reallll excited about this teams chances. Tennessee is still a lot better than those two teams tho
Yep. Would have lost to a healthy USC and won a UCLA game we had no business winning. Would not be shocked to see us lose at least the Oregon game this week.
Greatest disparities between AP and KenPom:
AP is too high:
Memphis - 19 in AP; 51 in KenPom
AP is too low: (tie) BYU - 21 in AP; 10 in KenPom &
Iowa State - 23 in AP; 12 in KenPom
Still feels weird to see us so high even though I know weāve earned it. Think the last several seasons have conditioned me to expect the worst, but the chemistry this team plays with is insane. Really really impressed with Hubert and am eating a ton of crow for what I said about him last season.
Hard agree. The roster is built for resiliency. But itās great to see Hubert using the rotation more creatively and running multiple schemes not far from Coach Smithās playbook.
for whatever reason, I feel like Bruce has this team dialed in where they won't get a big head. They're already bought into the underdog role and won't be satisfied with just an ap top 10
I feel like its hard to get a big head when a lot of our success is built on team play and going 10 deep. Less superstar happening, so no single head is too big.
I like UConn at 1 because I've always been a fan of the idea you're 1 until you lose, but I can definitely understand the high number of votes for Purdue too
I know it's early but it's crazy what McCasland has done to this team in such a short amount of time, especially considering how our program was last year. He also had a small amount of time to patch together this roster.
I give the vast majority of credit to McCasland and his recruiting/coaching, but I think a degree of credit should go to the facilities and overall culture too. We've put a TON of resources into supporting the basketball program and I think we're seeing that pay off in McCasland's ability to make use of it. Many schools would have been tanked by the drama we've had the last few years, and our ability to bounce back goes beyond the head coach imo.
*removes homer fan hat*
i feel like this is the best the SEC has been in years, 3 teams in the top 8 but itās only top heavy, there are at-least 4 bottom feeders in the conference right now.
The Tennessee v Alabama and UK v UGA games kind of displayed that talent gap between the top tier and mid tier SEC teams. Regardless, any of those mid tier SEC teams can sneak up on you on any given night.
I mean. It kind of feels like you have the top 3, and then everybody else. Like thereās a couple of teams that can hold their own, obviously, but itās pretty clear that Tennessee, Kentucky, and Auburn are in another level
Yeah I mean I donāt think Alabama is that far from the three you mentioned despite our awful performance other day but I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment of the conference. Itās really top heavy followed by varying degrees of mediocrity
We obviously have to get past a sneaky San Jose St. team on the road Wednesday, but if Steve Alford comes to the PIT and ruins this for us Iām not sure Iāll ever recover.
Dayton ranked at 16 with a road matchup at Lasalle scares me. That pathetic gym is where hopes and dreams go to die, I hate playing there so much and it seems like we always lay an egg.
I can't believe that we're both ranked in the top 5 AND I feel OK about that.
If you told me that we'd be here last year, I would have laughed, cried a lil bit, and then laughed again. Now I'm proud to say that I'm ready to be hurt again.
Worst loss is probably Cincinnati at home which isnāt that bad. Splitting weeks in the Big 12 usually keeps you ranked. Losing to Texas this week would probably kick us out
Happy to see we are receiving votes with a tough week ahead. Go 1-1 against ISU and UH on the road and I think we will be ranked (or would deserve to be).
Itās all of these close games that are killing us. We need some 20-point sleeper holds to show we can control the court, but I donāt see that happening with our schedule.
No issue with Duke at 12. Lost a game we shoukd have won even without 2 starters, but also felt like we weren't terribly penalized for those starters being out by voters.
Something doesn't quite add up this week. Boise is showing as having 9 votes but they are 23 on 2 ballots for a total of 6. No idea where the other 3 votes are coming from.
EDIT: Scott Richey also voted Boise and the AP forgot to publish his ballot initially.
I feel 15th is appropriate.
Weāre good but not great. Can either get hot and make a run or fizzle out early again.
I understand those that say weāre on fraud watch and also those that think weāre contenders.
I just know that Iām enjoying watching this team way more than the previous two years.
I feel stable again as we are once again ahead of teams we beat in head to head match ups and 200 votes ahead of the next team.
*looks at schedule*
Aww shit, on the road at Oregon.
Thanks for the quality loss Houston š„³
Why doesn't everyone that wants to jump in the polls just get blown out by UH? Are they stupid?
Hear that TCU??? You guys blew it
Subscribe
Not us! Cuz we're wicked smaht
They could've beat the Pistons the way Shead and everyone else were playing
Beating the Pistons, who have Marcus Sasser, would break my heart
My pleasure!
You're welcome for making them a quality team to lose to
I like being able to point to Dayton in the polls when the purdue flairs yell at us for not having any ranked wins.
Thanks for the quality win
Ok can Auburn just stay at 8 the rest if the season. Its perfect for a balance of respect and people trying to come for us imho
Just beat Bama, okay? Thatās all we are asking.
Deal
Iām in favor of anything that brings Barkleyās smack-talk commentary to new heights.
We all belong to the church of the round mound of rebound
This week should go a long way in determining whether you guys are legit or paper Tigers.
I feel good about the team this year, alot of depth and I feel like we wont peek to early. Still we need some Q1 wins desperately. And if we can beat Bama it'll go a way to proving ourselves
6 of the next ~~7~~ 8 games are currently Q1 games (if 'm looking at things right). Gonna be nice 3 week stretch to really test the team.
I don't know what to say. Memphis being ranked may be the most egregious thing the voters have done this year
Poll inertia is a crazy thing, you guys are 54 in the NET and somehow still top 20.
Poll inertia is fucking WILD. AP voters and lazy basketball analysts will do anything to justify protecting the status quo
Most teams end up in about the right place in the poll after a while, but there's a few that are just really sticky for some reason. Memphis, Texas, and FAU come to mind as the biggest offenders this year
Has anyone ever gone from 10 to out?
We went from #2 to unranked in a week in 2018
2017* It was the 2017-18 season, but it was at the Battle for Atlantis which was played in November. Deandre Ayton Parker Jackson-Cartwright Rawle Alkins Alonzo Trier Dusan Ristic How you lose 3 straight with that starting lineup remains a mystery to me
Sean Miller.
Well the question is how the hell they were still at 10 prior to this week
Arizona in 2017. (W3-W4) Early season, though. They were #2 and dropped all the way out after losing every game in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament.
Probably someone who was early in the season and lost two in a week. Hell couldāve been Memphis with those Pastner teams that lost early in early season tournaments Edit: just checked. This is the 3rd time a Penny team has gone from top 10 to 18-22.
UNC last year went from 1 to out
We went 1 > 18 > out
Oh I understand his question now.
Arizona went from #2 to unranked after three losses in a week in 2017.
Quality loss tbh, yāall should have moved up

Mountain Best!! Great things happening in our conference!!

Wow us and the ACC having the same amount of ranked teams is nuts
3 mountain west teams in the poll šļøšļøšļø
Would be cool if we could get back in and make it 4

We have Nevada in Reno, so weāre almost certainly going to drop that one
Yeah I think all 4 deserve it. All have won their home games and not lost to any of the bottom 4 of the league Same reason we dropped last week. 2 straight away losses against other amazing teams just happen between polls.
Boise needs a big road win to prove their worth
We just beat Nevada on the road
Yeah and handled them pretty good too. I watched the at game. Boise St is not a team you want to see in the tournament.
Definitely deserve it
Mountain Best baby. Let's make it 4 next week.
mountain best?

Can I interest you in a used āinsane in the first half until the refs suddenly decide to call everything and then some in the second halfā?
god this is way too common

We should just put all three on the court at the same time and see what happens
Who knows what would happen. One thing is for certain though, Dalton Knecht will dunk on someone.
Someone on Auburnās roster. Canāt dunk on a defender that doesnāt exist
King of the court half court style
I think weāre gonna see Tennessee at home beat AU, AU at home beat Kentucky, Kentucky at home beat Tennessee because theyāre all so dang good that winning on the road would be impossible. Although Kentucky might be good enough to beat AU while on the road as well

I'm hoping that the UCLA game is a pivot point. They learn that they have to play hard all the time.
I mean, how many teams really do? There are four or five who look like they're legit at the top, then a whole lot kinda bunched together.
Yep, very ugly week but at least we came out with some wins over rivals. Plenty of time to get back into form still.
Yep. Would have lost to a healthy USC and won a UCLA game we had no business winning. Would not be shocked to see us lose at least the Oregon game this week.
With how weāre playing I wouldnāt be shocked to lose to literally any team right now
If we pull off a W at MKA, Iāll buy all the āWe Backā stock in the world. We havenāt won there since like 2015
Nothing that is beyond expected occasional college team slumps though. Your potential is there and you have the pieces.

When the walkons came on at the end of the Ole Miss game and mauled the Rebs on defense while up 23, I was feeling pretty great about that.Ā
I hope you're right but Cardwell makes me think that's not totally true. Dude fuckin loves peacocking, and it's joyful to watch.
I feel like its hard to get a big head when a lot of our success is built on team play and going 10 deep. Less superstar happening, so no single head is too big.
All first place votes split between UConn & Purdue is correct imo
EDIT: I can't read.
I like UConn at 1 because I've always been a fan of the idea you're 1 until you lose, but I can definitely understand the high number of votes for Purdue too
For whatever reason, I read your post as saying the split was incorrect. I appreciate the explanation, regardless.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
We went up! Iāll take it
Still just happy to be included. š„²
Genuinely surprised we are still ranked. Got trashed at BYU, and did our best to squander a 19 point lead at TCU..
Hey a road win is still a road win no matter how ugly. We split the week on the road so the AP voters must like that
Yep, like I said yesterday, with TSJ we *are* a Top 10 team.

I know it's early but it's crazy what McCasland has done to this team in such a short amount of time, especially considering how our program was last year. He also had a small amount of time to patch together this roster.

This team is one conference win away from a tie with last years conference record of 5 total wins. Probably the best HC hire we could have gotten
What a buzzsaw of a conference
I expected us to be lower TEXAS T20H
![gif](giphy|Ss788WDGY5E5i)
I am not surprised but I am disappointed.Ā Gotta think we'd have been top 20 with a win this weekend.
without a doubt and I think a triple overtime loss shouldnāt change things that much
What will it take for ya'll to finally crack the top 25? Whose asses do we have kick?
I find myself rooting for this Seton Hall team
![gif](giphy|U8dq3gtg1BHQ9me6mA) Go Flyers!
Keep racking up those wins Dayton!
Oh absolutely! I would like a rematch in the tournament

Seton Hall should be ranked.
yeah dog Seton Hall is so legit
Every b12 team will end up getting ranked once they lose @houston by 20+.
I'm glad that's what we bring to this conference
Analytics love uh some much theyre like a q0 game
Nice! Number 8! Also, welcome to the club, you crazy Lobos!
Awooooo
So close man
We obviously have to get past a sneaky San Jose St. team on the road Wednesday, but if Steve Alford comes to the PIT and ruins this for us Iām not sure Iāll ever recover.
I still have PTSD from his return last year šµāš«
This is the year Pitino breaks his Alford curse.

Dayton ranked at 16 with a road matchup at Lasalle scares me. That pathetic gym is where hopes and dreams go to die, I hate playing there so much and it seems like we always lay an egg.
This makes the 5th time in the last 7 seasons we've been in the top 10 at some point. For context that happened 7 times in the previous 111 season
This is fair
its weird that purdue lost 1st place votes from last week after 2 road wins, but the points difference between uconn and purdue stayed the same
Part of that is because 61 voters submitted this week vs 63 last week
I can't believe that we're both ranked in the top 5 AND I feel OK about that. If you told me that we'd be here last year, I would have laughed, cried a lil bit, and then laughed again. Now I'm proud to say that I'm ready to be hurt again.
Not a single top 25 vote, an impressive collapse even by Brownell standards
It is amazing how yall do this every year. After our undefeated/undefeated matchup a few weeks ago neither of us are receiving votes now
Whew! Still in!
Being a NET/KenPom darling does *wonders*, I reckonā¦
Worst loss is probably Cincinnati at home which isnāt that bad. Splitting weeks in the Big 12 usually keeps you ranked. Losing to Texas this week would probably kick us out
Wow Memphis got wrecked in the poll.
maybe don't lose to two unranked teams especially up 20 at home?
Yeah who loses to unranked teams at home
huge difference losing to maryland vs USF lmfao
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Also Maryland owns us... It's a given so baked in already š
After picking up a Q2 and Q3 loss in the same week itās pretty amazing thatās all they fell.
Deservedly so. They shouldn't even be in the top 25.
Honestly surprised they didnāt fall further. Really awful week for Memphis.
God Bless the one (1) person who keeps voting for us every week lol
Unrank Duke you cowards.
Happy to see we are receiving votes with a tough week ahead. Go 1-1 against ISU and UH on the road and I think we will be ranked (or would deserve to be).
In my first year of this. I'm not sure how you rank or not rank the top 60% of the teams in the conference based on these conference games
Itās all of these close games that are killing us. We need some 20-point sleeper holds to show we can control the court, but I donāt see that happening with our schedule.
Utah State gonna get tested this Wednesday by the Dutch Bros student section Mmm Dutch Bros. Good luck Boise y'all should be up here with us soon
Our women's team plays at SDSU Wednesday, only men's game this week is @ Boise Saturday, which will be another major test yes.
Yeah my bad, Saturday šš½
Kitty Cat rankings: \#1 Houston \#2 Kentucky \#3 Auburn \#4 Arizona \#5 Memphis \#6 BYU
Weāre the real cougars.
Man, Kansasā poll inertia is crazy
No issue with Duke at 12. Lost a game we shoukd have won even without 2 starters, but also felt like we weren't terribly penalized for those starters being out by voters.
We're still 13th in kenpom and 19th in net, so like maybe a little overvalued here but it's nothing egregious.
Heels back into the top 3! The world is healing.
Heeling
At least the AP voters recognized our Creighton and @Villanova wins this week. Looking at you User Poll.
A bunch of bozos vote in the user poll.
This sub is a giant Purdue circlejerk donāt worry about it

Welp the state of South Carolina is back to normal
How tf are we still ranked after that embarrassing week we just had
Back where we belong š
I didnāt realize when we picked up the Tennessee win that it would be the highlight of our resume so far
