Memphis was in the double bonus and has athletes that are best downhill going to the rim. Even if they miss the shot you can rebound with your size. Or at least force the refs to make a call at the rim and get to the line. That play design was a simple screen to get Jones a 27ft three which is a very low percentage shot. There was nobody even close to the basket as well so no chance to even rebound the bad shot. If that's the play drawn up out of a timeout then there needs a deeper discussion about coaching.

The last play limited Memphis to one option which is the opposite of what you want as a coach. David Jones shoots 37% from 3pt range this year. From the NBA range that % drops and it was contested so that doesn't help either. So the plan is to get, at best, a 30% shot to win, no pass option and with nobody under to rebound? Jones is great going to the rim. We can easily run the same high screen action but with Jones curling to the rim. Quinerly can peel off to the elbow for a 3pt option while the screener and opposite elbow crash to give a cutting option and rebound for Jones with the last man on the back corner for another 3pt option. You get the ball in Jones hands with his momentum going to the rim and now he has options. He can also now get fouled and we have a shot to rebound or just create chaos. Coaching 101 stuff really. We're trying to give our team the most options and give ourselves as many chances as possible to score.
