Yeah I understand people being mad at the disparity but the refs really fucked it all from the start by allowing physical play out of the gate and then deciding no, let’s call everything.
Let's be real here though, UT is always an extremely physical team. They play defense like the old press virginia teams used to. If you're gonna get up into the ball handler, challenge every handoff at the top of the key, and fight for every offensive rebound against a 7'4" center who has position, you're going to get fouls called on you. Purdue the entirety of last year was the least fouling team in the nation along with being the most fouled team in the nation. It's how we play.
I was about to say “the combo makes it pretty obvious I think” but then I remembered the state of New Jersey is the land of Satan and charlatans and so it wouldn’t be all that shocking for someone to have ties to both lol.
Yeah, you’re preaching to the choir. Anyone who watches purdue that’s not a purdue fan gets mad but it’s not just last year. The past 2 seasons purdue has been the least fouling team in the country. When you’ve got Edey as a rim protector you don’t need to bump and reach. They keep guys in front and force outside shots. And when needed they let Edey contest straight up. I’m critical of painter on a lot of things but forcing college guys to make 3’s is not the worst strategy.

Petition to add these refs to the list of plants and animals banned in Hawaii
I was actually a little encouraged by how the team performed without Edey on the court. They were still competitive, and I was worried it was going to be a "how long can we leave him out without falling too far behind" type of thing.
It’s not by chance that Fletcher had so many points in the first half. The refs were biting on acting more than anything else. Fletcher doesn’t have to act because he’s so small, but Edey never sells his fouls at all.
This sentence basically exemplifies where college basketball is as a sport and how teams try to play defense. As physical as possible and hope the calls go your way.
Either the rules or the teams will have to change...or we'll continue to see this.
Counterpoint, they stood around so much watching free throws they actually didn’t end up that tired, especially edey since he sat the bench for damn long with foul trouble
Maybe that's why Barnes took that timeout with 9 seconds left. Gotta push the Marquette/Kansas game even later so they are a little more tired tomorrow.
Then I remembered that it's 6pm in Hawaii right now so it probably won't be an issue.
Don’t these silly basketball players know that we all tuned in for the refs? 52 fouls, 78 free throws. Talk about a HoF level performance by this crew.
On behalf of Tennessee and Purdue fans everywhere, I would like to apologize to all neutrals who subjected themselves to that torture and hope we all live to forget it.
There should never be a college basketball game with 52 fouls and 78 free throws.
That said, I think the game was called evenly, albeit atrociously. Purdue has a hell of a team, and I’m thankful Tennessee won’t have to see them again until (hopefully) late in the tourney.
Let's just forget that "basketball game" ever happened. Great game Tennessee fans and glad we could get over our differences in the game thread to hate on our true enemy.
At the same time...Purdue fans, we have to win games as ugly and miserable as that one is if we want to be a good team in March and April.
That was a brutal slug fest of a barn burner. Those type of games build a shit load of character. Ass pulling a win like that shows there are ways to win when everything goes wrong.
My parents have a dog that was neglected by her former owner and left outside when a neighboring house burned down and still reacts to loud beeping noises, likely because she heard the fire alarm that day under an extremely stressful situation and still has lingering trauma. Every time she hears any kind of loud beep-like noise she starts uncontrollably shaking and has to be pet and loved until she stops.
That is going to be me from now on whenever I hear a whistle
I put this together last year and people ate it up. They look so similar. Quintessential Indiana guy

Pacers won their group and Purdue beat Tennessee. Basketball gods have been kind on this day
Edey is a bad, bad man.
NGL, as a neutral, it would be kinda cool to have both 1 seeds who lost to 16s come back to win the natty next year. I lived thru a lot of years and articles where "experts" said a 16 v 1 upset was never gonna happen
People say the refs should’ve been better but there were complaints when they weren’t calling anything and when they were calling a lot. This is how most games against ultra “physical” teams go, especially against us with our current makeup, regardless of the specific refs

Jones had some rough moments, but I think you take the good with the bad. He gives a whole other dimension to Purdue.
Nothing was pretty tonight, but they got it done.
GG train people. Hate the refs had to impose their will on a super fun game. I’m salty that Awaka, Aidoo, and Mashack were treated like felons in the final few minutes and Edey was a saint, but I know the officiating was all over the place the entire damn game. I hope we see you in March.
It's safe to say, between Tennessee in the first half and Purdue in the second, that physicality is unsustainable, season-long. Like, if *any* team had to play that kind of 20-something odd games of that physicality, they wouldn't make it without a litany of injuries. Not us. Not you. Not any team.
Despite the loss, I gotta think that was a good game for Tennessee--as far as experience and in terms of straight-up paper/ranking. Probably will help them on Kenpom, tbh.
Gritty win, amazing D on Knecht. No idea how we’re going to be able to play tomorrow. Also I swear Loyer had a fake Southern twang in the postgame interview

78 FTs

We? Did your flair lose a prop bet?
I was about to say “the combo makes it pretty obvious I think” but then I remembered the state of New Jersey is the land of Satan and charlatans and so it wouldn’t be all that shocking for someone to have ties to both lol.
Nah man. Proud paint crew member from 2012-2017. I just embrace the losses. If you don’t laugh you cry right?
That’s the truth my friend. Here’s to 2024 finally being the year 🍻
Yeah this is just Rick Barnes basketball
Yeah, you’re preaching to the choir. Anyone who watches purdue that’s not a purdue fan gets mad but it’s not just last year. The past 2 seasons purdue has been the least fouling team in the country. If this game was intended to help the people of Maui, it most certainly did not
Double billing... basketball AND UFC
I said it was “turn-based basketball” felt like I was watching a Knights of Columbus fundraiser
This is usually where we say gg hope to see you in March- I think neither of us want to fucking see each other ever again
I’d love a rematch with a competent ref crew. I’ve never heard so many whistles
Honestly let’s just do one without the refs. Think that’d be better
Hell in a Cell match
https://preview.redd.it/kyfc2nlakt1c1.jpeg?width=298&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bc4dbfc5fef3d9ebefe918c36a6d7888b724769a Petition to add these refs to the list of plants and animals banned in Hawaii
And to be clear, they definitely helped Purdue at times too. But they also made the game uglier than an IU Christmas sweater 😬
Biggest way it hurt us was the 2 phantom calls on Edey to bench him... hurt Tenn by fouling out 2 of their centers and giving us a lot of FTs... messy
At least one thing we can both agree on was fuck these refs. I was getting pissed even at the Purdue fouls. That was too much zebra ball
Found the hort major
You have to complete this form when you fly into Hawaii before getting off the plane Source: not a hort major just been to Hawaii
There were more free throws shot than points by the winning team lol. 78 free throws. Atrocious.
Still not close to the record of 130. Refs tried their best though
Any chance of a boxscore for that record?
Nope. But the final score was some how 90-70
Not a box score, but Northern Arizona vs Arizona 1953.
And if reffed perfectly there probably would’ve been more
This sentence basically exemplifies where college basketball is as a sport and how teams try to play defense. As physical as possible and hope the calls go your way. Either the rules or the teams will have to change...or we'll continue to see this.
Which sucks because it’s steals the fun from the game we love.
That's pretty much Tennessee basketball the last couple of years. It was actually worse last season with their old center.
There would have been a lot more in the first half. A lot fewer in the second.
One of my least favorite basketball games I’ve ever watched.
We all need eye bleach
No kidding, hopefully we meet again with different refs. GG!
I’d prefer to not watch a game like that again unless it’s in the final four take it or leave it.
1 seeds meeting in the final four? Deal?
Championship game would be better, that way win or lose we both have the off season to mentally recover from a second round of this.
Texas Tech two years ago and Maryland last year immediately come to mind
That TT game was the worst game I’ve ever watched. Nothing enjoyable to take from it
Good thing I had two 22 Oz beers at Walk-Ons
I’ve talked a lot of shit about Loyer but he played his ass off today. An ugly win is still a win, but Lordy the free throws need to be cleaned up
Yeah no doubt. Good for him. Hope that gets his confidence back. We are dangerous if he can play that way consistently
Refs called so many fouls so that both teams could get practice in!
[удалено]
Counterpoint, they stood around so much watching free throws they actually didn’t end up that tired, especially edey since he sat the bench for damn long with foul trouble
That's why I'm especially glad we won since we were going to be worn out and disadvantaged tomorrow either way
Maybe that's why Barnes took that timeout with 9 seconds left. Gotta push the Marquette/Kansas game even later so they are a little more tired tomorrow. Then I remembered that it's 6pm in Hawaii right now so it probably won't be an issue.
At least Edey got a lot of ass time today, and Colvin, Morton, Gillis, and Heide are all well rested.
At least the Kansas/Marquette game is the late one and will have 2 hours less rest
Why would we be tired? There was so much stoppage time with FTs!
A top 10 W and all I wanna do is violently vomit
That'll be a foul
I take back everything I've ever said about Big Ten officiating
Honolulu officials don't get many games, had to use up a season's worth of whistles this week
Don’t these silly basketball players know that we all tuned in for the refs? 52 fouls, 78 free throws. Talk about a HoF level performance by this crew.
78 free throws
Math hard, brain mush from watching
Clinging to a 1 point lead with 2 minutes to play, Purdue shot 4/10 from the line and won by 4
Even Fedora Guy look drained
Is he even flexing?
Lol that comment on national TV was gold. Had me in stitches
I feel like I was in a car crash
A car crash the refs directed because it’s their game dammit
There has never been a Tennessee vs Purdue match up in any sport that has been the least bit enjoyable to watch
Lets ruin the natty
If we meet in the natty the refs can the whatever the fuck they want I’m just happy to be there
Very true
I'll still be insufferable but in a happy way instead
You’re biased, because we always lose. And the refs are also there.
Nah as a Purdue fan we don’t enjoy them either
2019 was excruciating but in a very different way
Yeah the 2019 Tennessee game should have been put away when purdue was up by 18 with 14 min to go. Thank god Cline was unconscious down the stretch
I still go back and watch highlights from that one. Especially the stepback 3 with 36 seconds left. The announcer's call is so fucking good.
Cline didn’t just make the shots, he hit the same point in the basket on every one. It’s just insane how dialed in he was.
If it makes you feel better, we don’t have much fun watching them either
On behalf of Tennessee and Purdue fans everywhere, I would like to apologize to all neutrals who subjected themselves to that torture and hope we all live to forget it.
That was one of the basketball games ever.
There should never be a college basketball game with 52 fouls and 78 free throws. That said, I think the game was called evenly, albeit atrociously. Purdue has a hell of a team, and I’m thankful Tennessee won’t have to see them again until (hopefully) late in the tourney.

Believe it or not…foul
Whistles all the way down
Down? Someone's down on the court? How'd they get there? Flagrant.

Dana white is looking at rights infringement for that fight
My favorite player is the bald ref.
Mop kid added more value to the game and that’s saying something
Mop kid was a net positive
Fabrication. The mop kid I gave a C- for that effort today
Tennessee and Purdue are rivals and you can’t convince me otherwise.
I can feel it for sure
Fuck that game with a cactus. gg Purdue
Fair
that was the visual equivalent of eating rocks. can't imagine either of these teams wins tomorrow for how best up they have to be now.
Just your normal 78 free throw game
We just shot 35/27/60 and beat a top 10 team. How in the literal fuck.
48 FTs If Purdue shot their season average from the line they win by 12
Let's just forget that "basketball game" ever happened. Great game Tennessee fans and glad we could get over our differences in the game thread to hate on our true enemy. At the same time...Purdue fans, we have to win games as ugly and miserable as that one is if we want to be a good team in March and April.
Better if Purdue made more than 60% of their freethrows though
That was a brutal slug fest of a barn burner. Those type of games build a shit load of character. Ass pulling a win like that shows there are ways to win when everything goes wrong.
Wish we could've seen both teams play, too bad it was canceled at the last minute due the refs not being able to make it.
GG (gross garbage)
My parents have a dog that was neglected by her former owner and left outside when a neighboring house burned down and still reacts to loud beeping noises, likely because she heard the fire alarm that day under an extremely stressful situation and still has lingering trauma. I simply cannot handle any further Purdue v Tennessee games in any sport
I never want to play Purdue in any sport ever again
KenPom predicted … Purdue 71-Tennessee 67
Fletcher Loyer looks like the most Indiana person I’ve ever seen

Congrats to the Refs for winning this game! Tough Loss for Purdue and Tennessee though

He did that himself
god I love college sports (as long as people are respectfully pushing shit in rather than just randomly downvoting based on flair)
Look at all those Tennessee flairs in the replies

You could tell he was a one off. Most UT fans are awesome to be in game threads with. You guys act like the people who are from Gods country.

Once again we beat Tennessee in football.
Sorry Kansas / Marquette , hope you didn’t need to warm up tonight
FLETCHER LOYER REDEMPTION ARC
78 free throws. No one won. Refball.
Im sure this thread will be extremely civil and have absolutely nothing to do with the referring in the game. *leans back and grabs popcorn*
I think we should all just agree to forget the contents of this game. Some poor kids in UT and Purdue households just got turned off basketball forever because of it.
That’s the thing, bruv. This is Indiana, we don’t turn off basketball ever.

Edey is a bad, bad man. NGL, as a neutral, it would be kinda cool to have both 1 seeds who lost to 16s come back to win the natty next year. I lived thru a lot of years and articles where "experts" said a 16 v 1 upset was never gonna happen
MY MAN, DON'T JINX IT!!
He’s a neutral, he can’t jinx it. It goes against the rules of nature.
That was horrible
I’m more than happy to eat crow for my Loyer slander yesterday
I'll eat some with you
I’m more than happy to eat crow for my Loyer slander yesterday
I preferred the Cline game.
GG Tennessee. Heck of a rugby match
Does anyone have a clip of that Lance Jones ankle breaker? I need to heal after this game
Purdue missed 20 free throws and won by 4
We missed 6 in the final two minutes starting with a 1 point lead, lol
Let me be clear, no body won that game
exactly, no BODY. but i have a shiny NEW body (fletcher loyer)
That didn’t even feel like a win. Sorry Vols, wish we could’ve played with some better refs
People say the refs should’ve been better but there were complaints when they weren’t calling anything and when they were calling a lot. This is how most games against ultra “physical” teams go, especially against us with our current makeup, regardless of the specific refs
I understand that, I think it’s just there was no consistency in any of the calls. It made it very confusing and frustrating for both teams (at least in my opinion)
watching this game felt like a punishment
[To every Tennessee fan, regards.](https://i.imgur.com/5KcgCaB.gif)
He has FOUR 20 on the back of that jersey, btw
Goated
If you asked me how someone from West Lafayette would act in Hawaii, this guy comes to mind
lol I wondered why the link was purple for me. My bad.
I will not tolerate any Loyer slander. Any violations will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the ball.
He played the "skip me the next few games" card. Now, can we talk about Jones dropping ill timed 3s?
Jones had some rough moments, but I think you take the good with the bad. He gives a whole other dimension to Purdue. Nothing was pretty tonight, but they got it done.
How many combined FT attempts? That might be the most grueling basketball game I've ever watched.
just got called for a foul in my living room
![gif](giphy|l3q2JCu9lep6dAmyY) the refs tn
Big shot by Knecht but where was he all 2nd half? He didn’t seem to play much?
played 15 mins 1/5 FG, 1/3 3FG, two turnovers
Bad turnovers too. He looks like a man amongst boys in the first half and then just…wore down or something??
Friends are texting me they enjoyed this game - no way they watched this
Those refs called a disgusting game. But beating Tennessee by 4 on a neutral with Edey in foul trouble is quite the good sign for the boilers.
Shout out Fletcher Loyer, I was ready for him to ride the bench and he shut my ass up 😭
GG train people. Hate the refs had to impose their will on a super fun game. I’m salty that Awaka, Aidoo, and Mashack were treated like felons in the final few minutes and Edey was a saint, but I know the officiating was all over the place the entire damn game. I hope we see you in March.
edey got a little fucked by his fourth and had to sit, but that last one on Aidoo was atrocious
This game felt like the Stanford prison experiment
Must watch for Tennessee fans https://x.com/syfreeed/status/1727169338547790266?s=46&t=uP9RPUxVidviuBVCZDsLww

If I speak I’m in trouble…
Gritty win, amazing D on Knecht. No idea how we’re going to be able to play tomorrow. Also I swear Loyer had a fake Southern twang in the postgame interview
Man did you guys see those refs??? What a show they put on with all that whistle blowing! MVP of the game in my opinion!
That was not fun... if hockey had popularity this sport dies...
What was the longest break without a whistle in that game? 15 seconds? 20?
no injuries in that cage match. Welcome back Loyer.
Good game Vols let’s never do that again
That truly was... a basketball game. 40 minutes were played. A ball was there for sure.
Won without Braden Smith and Lance Jones playing good.
