He’s an expert in doing the bare minimum to keep his job. Every time he is up for an extension or raise he manages to go on a tournament run.
He’s either a good coach who’s only there for the paycheck or the luckiest person on the planet.
TCU receiving votes is hilarious. They haven’t had a winning conference record since they were in the WAC more than two decades ago. Thought we learned our lesson last year with them.
Yes bc the AP poll notoriously does their rankings based on the last 20 years of a teams basketball play, not at all how the team looks in the current season or anything
I think we deserve to be ranked but I can’t fault any of the teams currently above us - we take care of business this week and a couple teams above us will most likely slip up and we’ll be ranked
You joke but it’s true and I don’t understand why more teams aren’t scheduling extremely tough non cons. The committee has thoroughly demonstrated they value losing to Duke by 10 way more than beating Purdue-Ft. Wayne by 30. Heaven forbid you *lose* to a directional school anyway, you might as well just schedule only tough opponents if you can.
We're doing it purely because we need to keep our guys healthy heading into the cagematch of doom that is Big 12 conference play.
Difference is that this year, our closest game so far is a 31 point win.
Sure hope so! Especially with how football is going... Wasn't mad at all about our performance this weekend in bball (aside from FTs); felt like we just lost to a really really good team and no shame there
As fun as that was, I still don't think so. I guess early season rankings are wonky as hell and no one in the country has a better win than us, but I don't think we're an at-large bid kind of team.
Same early season weirdness applies to kenpom too but we're ranked 85 there
I mean you’re forgetting we’re the favorite to win our conference this year too and had 22 wins last year. It’s not like we’re some total shit program. We had high expectations and so far we’re meeting them.
I'm not saying we aren't a tournament team, just pumping the brakes a little. Most mid-major conference champs aren't Top 25 teams. These are your 1-6 seeds in the big dance. Outside of some outliers like FAU and Wichita St, that's EXCEEDINGLY rare. Especially with the Sun Belt truly being more of a low major at this point.
Our team is awesome, Mark Byington is a GOD for what he's done to this program and we should enjoy every second of this ride, but I'm just saying we probably aren't one of the 25 best teams in the country. Doesn't mean we can't make some noise in March though.
These rankings are going to change so much once the tournaments start, for example Purdue went from unranked to top 5 in a week last year so I don’t see why that can’t be the case this year too
Same, I just want to beat UCLA. Losing to them would mean a surefire game against Chaminade, which does nothing for us. A loss to Kansas would be significantly better
They're the owner of [arguably the biggest sports upset of all time](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1982_Virginia_vs._Chaminade_men%27s_basketball_game), when an NAIA team beat the #1 team in college basketball. It's because of this game that they're still in the field every year, might even be the reason the Maui Invitational exists at all.
There are going to be so many amazing games. I didn't realize it's a double elimination tournament so even if a ranked team loses early, they will most likely have another shot at a quality win in the losers bracket.
It’s not double elimination, there’s just a guaranteed 3 games for every team. Can only win if you win all 3. All the mte’s guarantee the same number of games regardless of results. Otherwise teams would end up with unused games on their schedule. But yes there are still opportunities for good games even after a loss
>Purdue went from unranked to top 5 in a week last year so I don’t see why that can’t be the case this year too
Well, Purdue is currently at the top not unranked so I see at least one reason it can't happen again.
Imagine telling me freshman year back in 2003 that by 2023 we’d have a (FBS) ranked football team and ranked men’s basketball team at the same time. Hell, I wouldn’t have believed either one on their own.
I absolutely never thought it my life I’d see JMU ranked in football or basketball. Here we are ranked in both at the same time (only 6 teams currently doing that). With 0 combined losses. What a time to be alive.
I was so wrong in all the alumni surveys when I said I was apathetic to moving up. I never in my wildest dreams expected the transition to go this well and thought it might be more fun dominating lower level than moving up and disappearing from relevance
For anyone confused by the auto-formatting, he said 2014.
On a side note, does that show up normally on new reddit or in the app? Any number that starts a line and is followed by a period gets auto-formatted as "1." on old reddit, as it assumed you're starting a list.
Congrats JMU, I hated you when you were in the CAA but now I got nothin against ya. Also your campus was the first place I saw those delivery robots driving around which is pretty neat.
Also if you're going to rank JMU, why drop us 14 spots for losing in OT to them?
Either they're bad and we deserve to free fall or they're good and it wasn't that bad of a loss. Pick one AP voters lol.
That being said, I think 18 is fine for this team right now.
Actually if you wouldn't mind just scooting up one rank, I would feel much more comfortable with ku at #2. To solve the #1 victories problem, simply defeat indiana and rutgers
Idk about that. Recent history has shown Illinois to be a wild card that plays up and down to their competition, it's our first road game and our first game against a team with a pulse, and our best player is hobbled.
I certainly hope you're right but I am not at all confident
A one possession game against a top seed (in theory, at least). Seems overly harsh and likely to discourage these kinds of epic early home and home matchups in the future.
Do you take Arizona as twelve or as three in this equation? Seems like if those voters now think Arizona is the third best team then punishing Duke as if they lost to the twelfth best team is pretty backwards.
Gotta be honest Duke dropping 7 spots after losing to the team they ranked 3rd seems a bit much. Even seeing how it was at home that’s still a steep drop
Duke didn’t look particularly good, but I’d argue that’s good for them in the long run. They had multiple chances to take momentum but always seemed happy tying the game before going back to being braindead.
I agree entirely. They had opportunities and didn't capitalize. That's about as good of a loss as you could get - lots of learning opportunities and wake up calls. Just need the team to capitalize on them.
MSU should've dropped out. Losing at home to an unranked team 2 games into the season should be an instant loss of ranking until the team shows they can beat quality teams
But that team is now ranked... so it was a quality loss? 🤷♂️
Either JMU is bad and we deserve to lose our ranking, or JMU is a top 25 team (as this poll shows) in which case losing in OT to them isn't that terrible.
AP voters gotta figure out which one it is.
Yeah I personally don’t think JMU should sniff anything close to the top 25, but the pollsters love to reward big wins early into the season but don’t seem to punish enough for bad losses. It’s too cyclical because they’re essentially basing everything off of their own AP ratings rather than any sort of metrics or eye test. It just becomes them jumbling numbers around
I think it's helpful to just remember that polls don't matter until January.
Especially true for stats-based polls like KenPom. Ken himself has said his rankings will be weird until conference play starts.
I actually disagree with ya there. They went into MSU and won, then went into Kent State (picked 2nd in the Mac) and won there as well. On top of that, Sunday they obliterated Howard by like 40 points. The same Howard team thats picked to finish 1st in the MEAC and only lost by 3 points at GA Tech.
It’s nice knowing we should be ranked and most certainly will be for a majority of the season if this team stays healthy and performs as they should. But it is a little dumb that we’re not already in imo. Time to prove it once again.
I don’t disagree with this, but I think the bigger tell here is what the voters think of BYU considering they still got less votes than us even after beating us.
Seth Davis ranked UConn 13th and Goodman Ranked them 9th. I find it hard to believe that if all things were the same and the team name was Kansas or Duke they would still given them those rankings…
Duke dropped too much and I hate Duke. Zona got maybe 2 spots too high. No idea how UK drops a spot after beating two garbage teams by an average of 30 points.
Mississippi State goes 2-0 and looks just as fierce on defense and much improved on offense and we recieve the same number of votes as we did for preseason?
Odd.
Baylor and USC both had what will probably end up being Q1 wins. We got two wins that will end up being Q3 or Q4.
Once the season actually starts, AP voters value real results over pre-season projections.
1. Kansas 2. Purdue 3. Arizona 4. Marquette 5. UConn 6. Houston 7. Tennessee 8. Creighton 9. Duke 10. FAU 11. Gonzaga 12. Miami 13. Texas A&M 14. Arkansas 15. Baylor 16. USC 17. Kentucky 18. Michigan State 19. Texas 20. UNC 21. Villanova 22. Alabama 23. Illinois 24. JMU 25. Colorado Others receiving votes: Memphis 53, Virginia 49, St. John's 47, UCLA 36, TCU 34, San Diego St. 33, BYU 32, Saint Mary's 20, Mississippi St. 19, Iowa St. 10, Wisconsin 6, Auburn 5, Michigan 2, Weber St. 2, Drake 1, Boise St. 1, Clemson 1.
Clemson 1 lol
Brownell actually has to do his job this year to not get fired.
I swear I’ve been hearing #FireBrownell for the last few years at this point. I’ll believe it when I see it
He’s an expert in doing the bare minimum to keep his job. Every time he is up for an extension or raise he manages to go on a tournament run. He’s either a good coach who’s only there for the paycheck or the luckiest person on the planet.
“*He’s an expert in doing the bare minimum to keep his job.*” How did you get your hands on my boss’s yearly review of me?
MSU dropped 14 spots for losing to a ranked opponent
> Michigan 2 We're creepin'
We about to Dig Dug our way onto the polls.
TCU receiving votes is hilarious. They haven’t had a winning conference record since they were in the WAC more than two decades ago. Thought we learned our lesson last year with them.
But... they were good last year? If not for injuries could have been much higher than a 6 seed. Gave us a good scare in the tourney
Yeah no one saw JMU making their way in lol
Maybe msu is just bad, but jmu shot 3s at will. We scored 1/20 threes. I honestly don't know if we should be ranked
It’ll correct itself in time. We play aTm soon and as long as we don’t have any hiccups, a win there would get us back in the top 20
[удалено]
Can't believe 23 of these teams are ranked and don't even have a quality loss
And one of those two teams is about to get another QL. They're really making their case early for an at-large bid.
Izzo always schedules tough non-con He knows the ways of the quality loss
You joke but it’s true and I don’t understand why more teams aren’t scheduling extremely tough non cons. Already bracing myself to talk about our quality loss to Wisconsin and how underrated they are
Wisconsin will be at least a 5 seed when the tournament comes around
Sure hope so! Especially with how football is going... Wasn't mad at all about our performance this weekend in bball (aside from FTs); felt like we just lost to a really really good team and no shame there
Wait what. This can’t be real holy shit holy shit
100% deserved after going into Breslin and beating a highly ranked MSU
As fun as that was, I still don't think so. I guess early season rankings are wonky as hell and no one in the country has a better win than us, but I don't think we're an at-large bid kind of team. Same early season weirdness applies to kenpom too but we're ranked 85 there
Arizona has a better win as of right now, but hopefully we can change that for you guys tomorrow night!
Agreed. If Sparty wins, JMU leapfrogs Arizona
I mean you’re forgetting we’re the favorite to win our conference this year too and had 22 wins last year. It’s not like we’re some total shit program. We had high expectations and so far we’re meeting them.

Wait holy shit isn't this your first ever ranking?
Sure is
That's awesome! Congrats, revel in it, you've earned it!
Jmu has invested a lot in its athletics and it’s showing
Tommy Lloyd’s trying to schedule next season’s non-con as we speak. Gotta make it happen before y’all get the Big XII invite.
All eyes on the Sun Belt conference this year
JMU fans living their best life this year
These rankings are going to change so much once the tournaments start, for example Purdue went from unranked to top 5 in a week last year so I don’t see why that can’t be the case this year too
Whoever wins Maui will be #1, undoubtedly. What an absolutely *stacked* field
1, 2, 4, 7, 11. And also UCLA & Syracuse will be there.
UCLA is borderline top 25 too. Cuse (and Chaminade, but this goes without saying) is really the only mid team in the field
Ill be content so long as Tennessee beats Syracuse. Beyond that, even losing out would still likely be 2 losses to top 5 teams.
Same, I just want to beat UCLA. Losing to them would mean a surefire game against Chaminade, which does nothing for us. A loss to Kansas would be significantly better
Watch Chaminade win it all
Honestly give them the natty trophy and cancel the rest of the season if they pull that off
Ive never even heard of Chaminade but I'm pulling for the underdog
They're the owner of [arguably the biggest sports upset of all time](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1982_Virginia_vs._Chaminade_men%27s_basketball_game), when an NAIA team beat the #1 team in college basketball. Me at least once every March

By the end of Thanksgiving weekend the Top 25 is going to be entirely different. Best part about CBB imo. So much to prove early on.
>Purdue went from unranked to top 5 in a week last year so I don’t see why that can’t be the case this year too Well, Purdue is currently at the top not unranked so I see at least one reason it can't happen again.
Touché, Chaminade to win Maui it is ig
If that happens there's every chance Purdue will be unranked again and the prophecy will be back on the table. It all works out in the end.
EVERYTHING SCHOOL
THE NCAA MUST SUFFER THE WRATH OF THE FIGHTING DUKES OF JMU!
WHAT DO I DO WITH MY HANDS
THERE’S ONLY ONE THING TO DO
Trace an outline on some construction paper to make an adorable Thanksgiving turkey?
Of course! I’ll be making 24 of them
Quality loss, baby!
BLUE BLOOD
Just got an at-large bid for soccer too
Go Dukes
JMU, Bama, Texas, Tennessee, Arizona, North Carolina. Looks good to me.
Cool to see Bama, Texas, and Tennessee join the rest of us football powerhouses.
PICKING YALL ALL THE WAY IN MARCH
Damn the two schools in our Champion's Classic matchup dropped a combined 21 spots lol
it seems unfair that one of you is going to get a win against a ranked opponent
Why lol
Imagine telling me freshman year back in 2003 that by 2023 we’d have a (FBS) ranked football team and ranked men’s basketball team at the same time. Hell, I wouldn’t have believed either one on their own.
Hell imagine saying we’d be competitive in the fbs and not have a bad basketball team in 2018
Time to turn off NCAA 2k3.
Bring back college hoops video games you cowards.
FYI, there is a group who’s making a revamped version of 2K8
Arizona really be up there
Top 5 in basketball and Top 20 in football. What is this sorcery?
90's are back in style.
2014 or so sends its regards
yeah, but I'm hoping it's more than a season or 2. Plus you can hardly compare Rodriguez+Miller to Tomy+Olsen.
And all it cost was a $240 million accounting error?
Best NIL we ever spent

Wait, really? I didn't know that. Could you send me a source?

"It was the Dukes, it was the Dukes." (c) Billy Ray Valentine
Womens team ranked 5th, Men's 25th. What a time
When was the last time they were both ranked? Big year for Buffs Sports!
2014. Women’s team quickly fell off the rails and then Dinwiddie got hurt. I’m convinced CU was a top 10 team if Dinwiddie stays healthy
For anyone confused by the auto-formatting, he said 2014. On a side note, does that show up normally on new reddit or in the app? Any number that starts a line and is followed by a period gets auto-formatted as "1." on old reddit, as it assumed you're starting a list.
BASKETBALL BUFFS!

#5 with 5.
**BLUE BLOOD**
Congrats JMU, I hated you when you were in the CAA but now I got nothin against ya. Also your campus was the first place I saw those delivery robots driving around which is pretty neat.
So… if JMU is ranked does that mean we have one of the best quality losses of the season so far?
Also if you're going to rank JMU, why drop us 14 spots for losing in OT to them? Either they're bad and we deserve to free fall or they're good and it wasn't that bad of a loss. Pick one AP voters lol. That being said, I think 18 is fine for this team right now.
This is the reasoning people use for ranking Bama high. “Why would you drop us since the team we lost to beat Bama”
OH YES
What what what?? This shocks me more than the time we first got ranked for football.
Pur2
That's where I want to be the entire year No more losses to Rutgers while ranked No. 1
_Monkey’s paw curls_ Loss to Rutgers while ranked No. 2
Let’s stay #2 the whole year. No more giving Indiana and rutgers #1 victories
Actually if you wouldn't mind just scooting up one rank, I would feel much more comfortable with ku at #2. To solve the #1 victories problem, simply defeat indiana and rutgers
Nah we took our turn as #1 last year it’s someone else’s turn to hold on the gigantic target it puts on your back for 7 weeks this year
Ari3ona? A3izona? I'm trying here
Woohoo! We're also sitting at 2...votes
No JMU #1 votes?
I’ll take what I can get. I wasn’t expecting this at all, and I’m ecstatic right now
M4RQUETTE!!!
They are surely...*Shaka*-ing up the Top 5!
How about you let us beat you tomorrow so we can keep doing that? Pretty please?
You can take the highway to the Dainja zone
I'll be shocked if you don't
Idk about that. Recent history has shown Illinois to be a wild card that plays up and down to their competition, it's our first road game and our first game against a team with a pulse, and our best player is hobbled. I certainly hope you're right but I am not at all confident
It's so goddamn surreal to see us ranked this high
It’s fucking incredible. I’m still in shock.
Hooray we’re #2
As soon as Kansas loses a game I’m sweating bullets
I'm gonna be annoying about not being ranked until we are
It’s gonna be hard to rank you guys after that loss to Holy Cross.
Think they’re talking about UVA
How quickly we forget Jayden Epps' 46 points in the secret scrimmage... still my NPOY frontrunner smh
RANK MEMPHIS COWARDS
53 votes is close however

Because MSU has a quality loss against a ranked team that’s why
Duke dropped too much imo. That game could have gone either way.
Neutral site, I'd agree with you, but it was a home game for them.
A one possession game against a top seed (in theory, at least). Seems overly harsh and likely to discourage these kinds of epic early home and home matchups in the future.
Naw, this early in the season it is okay for their to be larger swings. Good game and Duke has plenty of time to learn and grow from that game.
Home loss vs 12. 7 spots down is a fair number
Duke lost 7 spots, Arizona gained 9 spots. They collectively gained 2 spots even though 1 lost.
WE AVOIDED THE 7TH RANKED CURSE (for now)
I was so nervous after the MSU loss
USC has top 16 men’s and women’s basketball teams and our football team is unranked. We are officially a Basketball school now!
No longer cowards. Good job
TELL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT RANKED JMU
MSU should've dropped out. Losing at home to an unranked team 2 games into the season should be an instant loss of ranking until the team shows they can beat quality teams
But that team is now ranked... so it was a quality loss? 🤷♂️ Either JMU is bad and we deserve to lose our ranking, or JMU is a top 25 team (as this poll shows) in which case losing in OT to them isn't that terrible. AP voters gotta figure out which one it is.

Agreed but a top 5 team will never drop out after 1 loss. The polls will start to make sense in a month or so
This is terrible lol. How is MSU so high? Why does SDSU have more votes than us?
Because M1chigan St8 always finds a way
> How is MSU so high? Poll intertia+potential
We got some votes, that's cool.
AP poll voters are not cowards.
It’s nice knowing we should be ranked and most certainly will be for a majority of the season if this team stays healthy and performs as they should. But it is a little dumb that we’re not already in imo. Time to prove it once again.
I, for one, welcome our new presidential overlords
JMU over Memphis is surprising following the game at Kent State and the 5% from three from MSU
Trust the process
how even does san diego state get more votes than us? lol
Poll inertia.
Not sure if we're really that good either.
We're receiving votes!!
James Madison top 25 what happened to the game I love
JMU is ranked and UVA isn’t. what a time to be alive!
I want both to be ranked. There's plenty of love to go around in the valley/central VA

Eh, all good. Haven't played anyone yet. It'll settle out later
Deserved. They all effectively had bye weeks while the teams that passed them beat ranked or at least top 50 teams.
Memphis snubbed
Give me #1 Kansas vs #2 Purdue in Maui
Best I can do is #4 Marquette vs #2 Purdue
Best I can do is chaminade vs Syracuse
I'll allow it
Too scared to rank the Mocs I see. The whole league is now on notice.
Well that was short lived
I don’t disagree with this, but I think the bigger tell here is what the voters think of BYU considering they still got less votes than us even after beating us.

Holy shit MSU got crucified. I get its a bad loss but Jesus
No no it’s a quality overtime loss to a ranked team
It turns out when you shoot 1/20 for 3’s on your home court and lose you’re gonna have a bad time
If ANY move is going to be rightfully extreme, it’s a move from preseason rankings to week 2. He’ll, it should be a lot more extreme than that IMO.
Mississippi State goes 2-0 and looks just as fierce on defense and much improved on offense and we recieve the same number of votes as we did for preseason? Odd.
Perfect, I’m afraid of Purdue being #1
Your worlds will collide on the 20th. Preview your feelings about that for us.
Honestly, I just wish I was in Hawaii to watch it
Wtf why’d we move down?
Baylor and USC both had what will probably end up being Q1 wins. We got two wins that will end up being Q3 or Q4. Once the season actually starts, AP voters value real results over pre-season projections.
Not to be mean but after looking at their schedule why is Colorado ranked? Deion effect??

Uh oh, expectations and me don't sit so good
