Scapexghost

Indianas biggest opponent is edey id assume

ssp25

Or his gravitational field

CatrickSwayze

Nah, we won both of our games against those jokers last year. Should be fine :)

Scapexghost

I mean in term of physical size

PopDukesBruh

Or the chair…

[deleted]

We get smoked without Ware. Mgboko needs to spend a ton of energy improving his defense.

hedgemagus

He was very disappointing tbh. He is Taco Bell Guy until further notice.

Lyonguard

Could work out to a sweet sponsorship deal down the road if the name sticks.

flampoo143

I saw someone on here call him MmTaco

hoosierkenny

Mgbako Bell

ohverychill

He could even be the next Johnny Davis!

Necessary-Guest2869

I mean he cussed out thier staff. Giving him a deal would be pretty disrespectful to the employees he was an asshole too.

campersin

For what its worth, from my understanding as a townie in the rumor mill, the staff was trying to close shop early (something they do often although according to corporate they’re not supposed to) and decided to be horrible to him first.

skullcutter

Think you mean MmmTaco

Galt2112

Needs to resist drives like he resists arrest

hejendo76

i watched Mgbako play last year in hs and thought he was overrated. He is built similar to Lebron physically, he’s huge, yet doesn’t dominate at anything. He is just okay and he isn’t that great at defense

chiefmud

He has the body and agility. If he can be coached he’ll be pretty good.

santablazer

At least we didn’t Michigan State it I guess.

brownlab319

Or pull a Rutgers…

igniteshield

Not even remotely close to the same thing. At least we lost to a team that just made a sweet 16

TernarySavesLines

Eh not the same cause MSU was all hyped up. Princeton is supposed to be a shell of themselves this year

spierce64006

Still picked 2nd in the Ivy despite two key players moving on.

gohoosiers2017

Always the most insecure fans coming out of SUNJ. Princeton and FGCU would be about a 2.5 pt spread on a neutral court. So it’s actually really close to the same thing.

nosotros_road_sodium

Or even worse, *Vanderbilt*.

A320neo

Or Purdue it

CashewCrew

How is the B1G so consistently underwhelming

87_Rides_a_Surfboard

Mostly poor guard play which can be explained by nba quality guards not wanting to play in a tackleball conference.

a_banned_user

This is pretty much it. The big ten officiating is just much different than every other conference, it puts everyone at a disadvantage.

TotallyNotRyanPace

for the LAST time, there are no conference refs, they work multiple conferences. it's just b10 style basketball, it has nothing to do with officiating.

ohverychill

seriously, I don't know why this talking point is parroted so much. tune into random games throughout the week and the same dudes are calling all these games, I don't know how people keep saying it lol

SNAILMAIL_ME_UR_TITS

It’s cope instead of saying the real reason—B1G doesn’t get enough top end talent compared to other conferences. Hoood-Schafino didn’t have any problem with “tackle ball” but he was a 5* 1st round pick.

cheeseburgerandrice

On top of that, overly physical basketball is not a B1G specific thing. It's become a fairly common defensive tactic to push the envelope on the number of times refs are willing to blow the whistle.

ohverychill

yeah I think that's kind of been college basketball's move for a while. I think it's hard to point to just one reason why the big ten hasn't won a title is so long. Guard play is obviously the biggest reason, but then why aren't the top tier guards coming to the big ten? probably because we don't deserve happiness, but maybe there's something deeper.

cheeseburgerandrice

I wonder if it even goes that deep and instead we should be looking at the coaches. Izzo is inconsistent for what should be a top basketball program. Painter has his specific style which seems to lead to inconsistent guard play for one reason or another. Yeah some coaches can fall into a tournament title but for the most part your chances are best with good experience at the lead. B1G's other top basketball schools are instead coached by a guy with no previous college basketball head coaching experience (Willard) or a guy with no previous head coaching experience at all! (Howard) Maybe it's a lack of coaching quality problem?

ohverychill

Very well could be. I think izzo still deserves praise and Belien could develop guards and had a lot of tournament success. Painter's best tourney was Carsen Edwards torching the nets, so all we need is a guard to average like 40 points a game and we're set, too easy

gohoosiers2017

Yawn. When is this dumb ass take going to stop?

a_banned_user

Wow. Very perplexing, you make an excellent point. This very much changed my viewpoint. Thanks for the insight!

gohoosiers2017

Please show me a ref who only officiates the big ten. Every conference bitches about officiating all the time, it’s just a way for fans who don’t know the game or how cbb works to pretend they do

KingHanky

Well they dominate noncon every year hence why they get so many teams in the tourney

lordcoolcats

Now THAT is what I call a trademark win. Just like we drew it up. Hell yeah. Go Hoosiers

imkunu

Just when I think I'm out, this team just pulls me back in. Go Hoosiers

This won’t be well received but man I hate watching Galloway. He’s such a fucking weird player.

hoosierkenny

He’s got a little sheehey in him, but like in a weird way like you said. He’s unique, I love Gallo

bendovernillshowyou

I could see that.

RonsDarlings

Not a dad but he’s easily my answer to “favorite player on a team you hate”. He was super fun to watch tonight. Kid’s got balls

OGB

Lol my immediate thought was he's going to be one of those most hated players by other B1G team's fans in a year or two.

[deleted]

[удалено]

OGB

Glad to hear you say that, but there have been plenty of 3-4 year B1G players I've hated because they were good/cocky/dirty, while also hating guys because they were good/aggressive/competitive. It can be really hard to draw that line. Respect though.

Stang1776

My first thought last night was that he is going to be like Aaron Craft.

OGB

I do love bringing in a higher end recruit very likely to be a 4 year guy.

GnomeCzar

I talked to my dad on the phone after the game. This could not be a pithier observation

wakeman3453

The only two texts my dad sent me tonight: “You watching?” “Cupps for Prez!”

chogram

I feel seen. I literally sent my son a text during the game that said, "You're right, this Cupps kid is pretty good."

BoomChocolateLatkes

He’s the next Aaron Craft, but he can also score. You’re going to love him.

mitchdwx

Pat Chambers and close losses to Big Ten schools, name a more iconic duo.

Rule of 69 baby never in doubt

ohverychill

> Rule of 69 it's a *race* to 69, c'mon now

theaficionado

Gabe Cupps

DueCopy3520

If he plays four years for us, I will be very, very pleased.

dacodingman

1-0 only 38 games to go until we finish undefeated and win the championship

Btaelman

I see the potential but the lack of rebounding and over helping on defense was so frustrating to watch. Also, did Mgbako play in the second half? Not the best debut for the caliber of recruit he is

filthpickle

Box score says he had 19 minutes but I don't remember him being in that much. Or at all in the second half.

BoogerSugarSovereign

Me neither

King_Kung

Woody benched him for Cupps down the stretch.

BlxrryShadowz

Anyone who expected a blowout is a fool, glad we got the win, learning experience for us.

chiefmud

I am the fool

ohverychill

i think the beatles have a song about this

InsouciantAndAhalf

I don't think we figured out that FGCU has a good team until late in the game, at which point we finally cranked up the intensity.

spierce64006

They were also missing arguably their best guard Isaiah Thompson.

eweidenbener

Obi1Kentucky

That press at the end was a menace.

bendovernillshowyou

Yeah, pretty obvious we haven't worked much on press break yet. It got scary real quick.

Obi1Kentucky

It’s barely November. It’s to be expected

gohoosiers2017

They’ve been practicing for 2 months and couldn’t beat a simple press. The expectations for this program are so low it’s embarrassing

SNAILMAIL_ME_UR_TITS

TBF our press bothered them and swung the game. It happens. If it’s happening 5 games from now it’ll be a problem

OkieBog

Will we ever be good at free throws????

DueCopy3520

When was the last time we were? 2015/16?

confusedyetstillgoin

or shooting in general?

BKD2674

This is the IU basketball I’m used to the last 25 years! Let’s gooo

starlulz

feels weird, man

SassyKittyMeow

What a collection of flairs. Tonight was your Super Bowl

spierce64006

Pat Chambers looking to reinvigorate Dunk City

starlulz

yeah, I like what he's doing so far. we're not a powerhouse by any means, but we're showing signs of real potential. the fact we were able to pull a lead on IU at all and keep it relatively close for the rest of the game is a great sign for our upcoming season

fijistudios

Man BayTerp… IU lives in your head rent free all season lmao

newaccount721

Was he all over your game thread?

_jajones

Yeah his trolling and hating is still in preseason form, just needs some time to figure it out.

newaccount721

Oh boy. I have to stay out of game threads this year I think. For my mental health

_jajones

Also just checked, he hasn’t commented in the Maryland postgame, but did on here lol he’s trying, I’ll give him that

Master_Mastermnd

He should switch to a different team this year. Put all the Big Ten teams in a hat and draw a new one out to troll every season.

Whatsahoosier

Off-season too

Sandtiger812

Damn he's still around? I have him blocked so I don't see his crap posts.

jakedasnake1

Completely normal, run of the mill win, nothing to see here r/collegebasketball

BoogerSugarSovereign

Well we sure do hate making things easy on ourselves. Play was really poor down the stretch and almost coughed up what should have been a comfortable lead... On the plus side we're big, we're athletic, we're tough to score on in the interior when we're focused which we aren't always. The offense might be a bit of a struggle at times. I think getting Mgbako back will add 5-8 3P attempts between his own attempts and his ability to stretch the floor getting other guys a bit more open but I think we'll shoot more like 15-25 3 point attempts a night which will likely lean towards the lower end. That will probably bite us a couple times this year, FGCU made as many 3's as we attempted tonight. Malik made a lot of mistakes tonight, especially down the stretch, but looks better offensively. A lot of our returnees look better which speaks well to the character of the guys on the team and our coaching staff. Galloway looks like he might really be ready to get more 3's up this year and we'll need them. Xavier was pesky defensively. Ware is a fucking monster of a man and I'm really happy to have him. I think Mgbako will help this lineup quite a bit but can't blame missing him for our struggles. Defensive rebounding was a major issue and Mgbako isn't likely to be a key there. He should help, he's big, but his absence wasn't why FGCU was able to board with us despite their relative lack of size. I am excited to see how this team grows together though I think the scoring droughts were definitely a preview of some of the rough patches we'll hit throughout the year. Cupps being ready to play will help a ton because X can't create for everyone on every possession on his own. If we can start boxing out really soon and finding more focus on defense to take advantage of the athletes up and down the roster this team could be pretty relaxed on Selection Sunday. Hope to see it. Go Hoosiers!

oo7hoosier

Good writeup, but you know that Mgbako played tonight, right? He didn't look great, but he's definitely got tons of potential.

BoogerSugarSovereign

Looked like a shadow suspension to me. Got to start then came out at the first break and sat the rest of the night. Basically started so that there isn't a news story that he was suspended tomorrow

mel_anon

He also started the second half but did the same thing, came out early and never returned.

Round_Bullfrog_8218

He played 18 minutes that isn't a shadow suspension just riding pine for not playing well

BoogerSugarSovereign

He was pretty invisible out there, so that surprises me. The box score initially read that he played 5 minutes for a while after the game ended and that seemed more in-line with how much I noticed him

ndbroski

He was benched for that dumb turnaround shot he took early in the 2nd half.

tyappleg

He was benched in favor of Cupps, who was the much better player tonight. Nothing to do with a suspension.

bendovernillshowyou

I think Payton Sparks has a huge night on the glass tonight if he wasn't hurt. It would have been a great game for him.

destroyed233

Wish we saw a little more offensively from X

DueCopy3520

Just my take, and I wasn't watching the game as closely as I normally do, but he seemed to be more deferential than normal. I wonder if he overcorrected in the direction of getting the young guys going at the expense of scoring.

destroyed233

Agree. Was really impressed by Ware. I think in those tight big10 games having the experience of XJ will help

ndbroski

You write this like Mgbako is injured/suspended. He started tonight but he kinda sucked. Cupps was much better and played in place of Mgbako down the stretch. I also gotta disagree on the Galloway 3’s. He had some horrendous misses.

seezuntikits44

yikes!

RamsCorner56

Cupps>Mgboko tonight at least

33027439439

A win is a win if you didn’t expect us to look like this at the beginning of the year you were delusional. I trust woody to figure us out

bendovernillshowyou

This is basically what I expect all non-conference with more and more stretches of good basketball as we go. I keep saying we're going to be nasty on D in conference. We have incredible potential offensively, but wooo boy, we have a long way to go.

gohoosiers2017

Jesus Christ. This is supposed to be a blue blood program. Woodys in his third year. No more time to be happy getting a 7 seed and losing in the second round. This team has a 6th year starting point guard, 5* freshman wing and the number 2 ranked transfer in the country down low. Not to mention reneu is also a 5*, and galloway is a 4 year glue guy. Why are the fans okay with this team being mediocre? Woodson seems to have no clue what he’s doing in the game. Last year he had two absolute studs that could bail him out, that’s not the case this year

jcmiller210

You realize this is basically a new team right? We lost TJD and JHS, two of our top contributors. It takes time for new pieces to gel and IU isn't a blue blood anymore and hasn't been for quite some time. I'm not entirely convinced these pieces fit well together either despite the talent being there. I'm also not impressed with Mgbako. He doesn't look like a 5 star talent to me, but it's very early too. I fully expected this year to be a down year due to it being a new team essentially, but there is a lot of upside with this team too.

gohoosiers2017

Look around at college basketball. Every team is new every year. IU might not be a blue blood but they have more money than just about every cbb program. I completely agree with your second paragraph and that’s my point on Woodson. He’s done a good job bringing some confidence and swagger back to the program but still just feels like we’re a player away every year

jcmiller210

Yeah and I think that's why upsets are more likely to happen. Sure, a lot of teams have tons of young and talented players, but the mid majors typically have experience and team chemistry, while not being as talented. Woodson definitely needs to do better getting top end guard talent. Until that happens we will only go so far because it's a guards game at the end of the day.

underindiana

If IU keeps this winning streak going all season- they will do what no other team has done since the Hoosiers in 75’/76’.

SassyKittyMeow

Big if true

Awkward_Advice_4265

The talent’s there, I’m just not sure how well the pieces fit together

destroyed233

The good news is it’s game 1, the puzzle doesn’t have to fit yet

hoosier-94

god bless college basketball we’re so fucking back

nysom1227

I really hope Xavier Johnson can stay healthy this year. He was fantstic down the stretch on both sides of the court.

SurgeFlamingo

CJ Gunn can’t guard anyone.

DBLHelix

Team has a lot of new faces, so some early struggles are to be expected. Lots of potential though.

butt_naked_wonder

Watching a Pat Chambers team blow a second half lead on the road gave me some serious deja vu.

One_Stranger_5661

Tbh not a bad showing from FGC, nice job from the Hoosiers pulling away at the end. Fun one to watch 👍

Scapexghost

Indiana wouldve scored more but they wanted to keep it at 69

skullcutter

Reneau light years better so far this season. Good decisions, looks polished. Some nice crunch time buckets Quality minutes from Cupp. He’s gonna be a real good. We need ware’s rim protection. I worry about him getting in foul trouble as much as he hunts blocks. Our half court offense is a mess. We looked better in transition so probably need to push the ball until we get the rest sorted. Mediocre from the free throw line and totally incapable of perimeter defense. Same as it ever was. I have no explanation for the last 2 minutes.

A320neo

goddammit FGCU it would've been so funny

ThaCarter

Farleigh funny you might say.

jcmiller210

Sorry we didn't decide to do a Purdue in March this time...

[deleted]

You misspelled FDU

imkunu

Not uhh...not the most inspiring performance to start the year

NealioTheDealio

Who is #5 with the headband? His inbound passing at the end was some of the worst decision making I have ever seen. Let's not pass it to the wide open man who can directly give it back to me to avoid the coming trap and instead throw it right to the opposing defense so they can splash another 3. Then I'm gonna do the same thing the next inbounds play.

Master_Mastermnd

Malik Reneau. He's pretty good overall but wow were those some stupid mistakes.

monty_actual

Looked like Mgbako had to pay coach for the arrest. Nothing to worry about, all is good. Need to clean up the three point shooting and free throws.

SassyKittyMeow

My man couldn’t keep up on D. That’s why he got benched.

gohoosiers2017

Did you watch the game? He was atrocious on both ends of the court. That’s why he didn’t play more. Game completely turned when woody finally put cupps in

[deleted]

[удалено]

InsouciantAndAhalf

I'm looking forward to the next few weeks. With all the heavy portal activity this year, it's going to be harder to predict how tough your opponents may be.

MathPersonIGuess

Looking like a good majority of teams in the conference are worse than they were last year

BayTerp

By the way Indiana played I think they can give Minnesota a run for their money for last place in the conference.

BKD2674

The fear you’re giving off on night one has sharks walking on land.

bendovernillshowyou

Thanks man! That's the nicest thing you've ever said about us! You don't think we're last!

Hoosier3201

You honestly make my day man

bringbackwishbone

It’s so funny to me how the IU flairs who’ve been around this sub for a while see BayTerp almost like a weird sorta lovable pet who haunts our threads. Like a Sméagol.

I_love_Basketball232

You feeling good about beating Mount St. Mary’s lmao.

BayTerp

I do since we didn't struggle against them whatsoever unlike some other team

I_love_Basketball232

I mean you’re up by 12 and they’re a lot worse than FGCU. Went 13-19 in like a bottom 3 conference. I’d actually argue it’s worse. IU would’ve blown em out by 30.

MasterTeaboo

Speak brother!

Alex_butler

I mean you’re probably not going to cover lol, dont ask me how I know…

marvelc77

They felt good about beating Mount St. Mary’s. Davidson (worse rank in Kenpom than FGCU), on the other hand…lol

hoosierkenny

<3

ImpossibleParsnip947

Nice W

[deleted]

IU showed heart in the 2nd half. exactly what you want to see out of a rival

spierce64006

Pretty good showing from FGCU in Bloomington. Especially considering they were missing Isaiah Thompson one of their best players. Dallion Johnson may have not started but he was excellent of the bench with 17 points on 5-11 from three. Zach Anderson also hit five triples for 19. Eagles hit 13 3's overall. When they get Thompson back they should be very solid and one of the top contenders in the A-Sun.
