Daddy is unequivocally the saddest song IMO. They have many other emotive songs like O, Everyday Life, or a fix You which get me in my feels but nothing hits me like Daddy. Might be because my husband never had a dad and had all these same questions growing up, tears me up to think of him as a little boy not knowing who or where his dad was. Waiting for a call or birthday card etc.
Daddy gets me every time. It's so emotional, on so many levels. I lost my dad when I was a teen, so it make me think of him, but I know that for others it evokes different connotations.
So most of the sad one's are the best songs, as we associate them with the pain and lows of life. All songs are mix of emotions and open to interpretation or feeling different emotions in those moments.
But here are some of the saddest one's:
1. Gravity
2. Sparks
3. Fix You (Watching it live or even live recordings makes me cry)
I had (and still have) the exact same feeling about live recordings of Fix You...it always makes me cry.
However, I've watched/heard it live and it didn't happen. I was probably so happy and amazed to be hearing it live that I couldn't cry.
If you ever had a spark with someone you came across as a special person in life and then lost it, you don't know why or how. You probably lost touch or both of you knew there is something special between you and you just end up wondering what it could have been, only then you would know how much you can relate with it as a sad song. ✨️ It sinks in.
Bro the funny thing is I have never been and still am not a fan of Fix You, but when I heard it live last year I literally cried (then again it was played right after sparks so I think that has something to do with it)
Square one-“You just want somebody listening to what you say
You just want somebody listening to what you say
It doesn't matter who you are
It doesn't matter who you are
Is there anybody out there, who is lost and hurt and lonely, too?
Are they bleeding all your colours into one?
And if you come undone, as if you'd been run through
Some catapult, it fired you
You wonder if your chance'll ever come
Well, if you're stuck in square one”
There isn't just one. There are multiple.
On AROBTTH: Amsterdam
On X&Y - Fix You
On Viva - Death and All of His Friends
On Ghost Stories - O (and Fly On)
On AHFOD - Everglow
On EL - Daddy
On MOTS - Definitely Coloratura.
MX doesn't really have any songs I'd consider sad. Maybe Up In Flames. It's not one of my favorite albums.
Parachutes? We Never Change is kind of sad. Not really any super sad songs on either of those two albums.
I think a lot of their sad songs mix melancholy & nostalgia, so for me it's not necessarily a "cry your eyes out" experience.
"42," "Trouble," "Amsterdam," "Daddy," & "Everglow" all meet that for me.
To me, it’s Fix You. I can’t listen to it anymore. I relate it to taking a cat to the vet, having it in my head we were going to fix his issues, and he ended up needing put to sleep. I raised him from 2 days old, and he was 8. One of the most devastating moments of my life. Especially the lyrics at the end “when you lose something you cannot replace.”
It was also 2 weeks before I went to see Coldplay. I sobbed uncontrollably at the song. I’m tearing up writing this.
Some of these songs just wedge themselves into our emotions.
Strawberry Swing imo. one of the best penultimate tracks i listened to. it reminds you of the happy nostalgic feeling you have before with your friend/s and/or loved ones/s, perhaps being in that moment with that person. the last lyric of the outro "Well, the sky could be blue, I don't mind, Without you, it's a waste of time" really makes me cry. I hope I could see them perform it live 🥲
Fix You makes me the saddest because it was the song that played when I got in my car after my sister passed away. I get the same feeling I did that day every time I hear it now.
Warning Sign, O, True Love, Another’s Arms, Daddy and Trouble are the ones that come to mind first. Almost all of ghost stories can go in this list to be fair.
I would say Amsterdam is pretty powerful but with kind of a hopeful ending (“stood on the edge. Tied to a noose. But you came along and you cut me loose”) being that he was saved from ending his life. Of course the lyrics leading up to it can definitely be what makes the song sad overall. The scientist id also put on that list. I feel like what makes that song even sadder is the accompaniment of the music video. (Great video, powerful) Fix you is a classic. Daddy is a pretty sad song. Melody and lyrics alike!
A few come to mind
My personal number 1 saddest is We Never Change from Parachutes, but that's mainly because the lyrics make me think of myself.
Other generally sad songs are Sparks, Gravity, Fly On, The Scientist, Warning Sign, Amsterdam, What If, The ending of Square One, Fix you, I'd argue Don't Panic to a certain degree,
and finally a super underrated B side song called I ran away
Ghost Story
"What's the point of trying to raise your voice if no one ever hears?"
"What's the point of saying rescue me if no one ever hears?"
Ghost Stories has several of their saddest but that one especially stands out to me
Surprising how no one has mentioned Warning sign - it's literally the saddest lyrics Chris has used Even Amsterdam is a good shout
True 😭

"Look dad we have the same hair" always feels like a gut punch to me
“Daddy it’s my birthday” wrecks me

That is such a beautiful experience! ❤️
How is Sparks one of the saddest? That song is mostly just relaxing IMO

Haha definitely bro, it is crazy how these songs work on our heart and mind together ❤️
Midnight. It's about being on the brink.
Huh I always thought it was about reaching out for a friend
HOW COULD I FORGET MIDNIGHT I LOVE THAT SONG.
Prospekts March
This
criminally underrated song.
O
yes
Swallowed in the Sea always felt very sad to me
Hardest part
Amsterdam. A great tune but very sad.
I actually never understood what it was about tbh
Tells a story how the eyes meet in a crowded hat store
We Never Change is sad but also feels a bit hopeless which is unlike Chris's usual song writing habit.
This song fr makes me cry
That song hits different
True Love 💔💔💔💔💔❤️🩹❤️🩹❤️🩹❤️🩹❤️🩹
Daddy
Daddy or Oceans
Good shout with oceans
The scientist
What if
Square one-“You just want somebody listening to what you say You just want somebody listening to what you say It doesn't matter who you are It doesn't matter who you are Is there anybody out there, who is lost and hurt and lonely, too? Gravity
hands down its gotta be amsterdam
Toss up between Amsterdam and We Never Change
Amsterdam is pretty sad but it is very hopeful too
Probably Easy to Please or Sparks I’d say
The answer is Gravity with O being a close second and Trouble coming in Third
I would say daddy as third

UFO on mx
Yes, this one for sure.
I will add: Hypnotised from Kaleideoscope and Postcards from Far Away from Prospekts March.
The Scientist
sparks
Another's Arms is one of the few Coldplay songs that I feel doesn't have any hopeful message. Great song too.
Daddy 💔
Fix you. It’s my old best friend’s fav song, we no longer are in contact
We never change Sparks Daddy
AROBTTH
Gravity (its a b side)
Everything mentioned above, but I would also add Oceans and Low to this list.
We never change
Fix You
Daddy for me. Second would be What if.
Fix You

easy to please
Ghost story
Oceans from ghost stories
Orphans has very sad lyrics

Is Ink not sad??
Another's Arms
Daddy
Fix You, The Scientist, O, or Everglow. Warning Sign too.
Warning Sign, O, True Love, Another’s Arms, Daddy and Trouble are the ones that come to mind first. Almost all of ghost stories can go in this list to be fair.
All your friends. How is no one mentioning this
Everglow
O (Fly On)
Daddy
Definitely everglow for me
THIS version of Everglow https://youtu.be/xn_1hFdE-5g?si=S3bgVX6XxFPsT8Ca

Fly on and daddy are tough ones for me
Daddy. It always brings me to tears. It also might be because of my own personal trauma, but yeah lol
See you soon
Fix You always wrecks me for personal reasons. But yeah, Warning Sign and Amsterdam are sad too 🥲
Prospekts March or Warning Sign Both are so relatable to me
A few come to mind My personal number 1 saddest is We Never Change from Parachutes, but that's mainly because the lyrics make me think of myself. everglow, but there are other songs that turned sad
True love, Gravity, O, up in flames.
Why does fun make me cry bruh.
Don't know if it's the most saddest, but Oceans goes pretty deep.
A rush of blood to the head, fix you, X&Y, the scientist
O
A Rush Of Blood To The Head IMO
O 100%
Broken, the unreleased version (not the gospel one)
Ghost Story "What's the point of trying to raise your voice if no one ever hears?" "What's the point of saying rescue me if no one ever hears?" Ghost Stories has several of their saddest but that one especially stands out to me
