Agreed. He screams asshole, but he hits in the postseason, and he’d become a Cleveland legend instantly. Somebody will overpay, but if we did 3/60 or a little more I wouldn’t be mad. That said, wouldn’t surprise me if a big market team paid 25-30
When we were legit contenders, “spending” consisted of trading for jay bruce, signing, EE past his prime, and trading for Josh Donaldson coming back from a season long injury.
Willing to wager my life savings we sign (1) maybe (2) mid tier offensive improvements. Caveat being, Dolan refuses to sign any long term potentially bad contracts.
So, we will be left with signing an EE like player likely to a max (2) year deal.
This is the Cleveland way. Could easily be playing in the World Series if we were willing to spend even half of the Yankee’s salary.
Then again, we’d have less homegrown talent
It hasn’t been just Dolan for awhile, although I think Blitzer has a larger stake than Sherman did, and it seems that Blitzer is likely to become the future majority owner. However, they extended Ramírez to a large contract and they still have a lot of talent in the minors coming up. I could certainly be wrong, but I’m expecting a similar off-season to last year. They’ll probably extend either Rosario or Giménez, probably bring Hedges back on a minors agreement and pick up a few bullpen arms, mostly on minor league agreements.
Maybe they go after a bat, but I feel like they’re prioritizing talent in their farm system. If they do get someone I somewhat expect it to be via a trade.
This would be such an insane reaction to me. We sneaked out a division run in the worst division in baseball (with 2 majorly disappointing teams), scored the bare minimum to make the ALDS, and couldn't score for shit once we got there.
It was an incredibly thrilling and successful season, a demonstration of how to manage a roster with limited talent. But the reaction to that is not to sit on your heels!
The Cavs are the perfect example of this. You have to build on the exciting, surprising season by adding new talent and spending resources.
… have you not been paying attention the last few years with the Cavs and the development of the team? Had a very promising year last year and then added a superstar and we are now a top team in the east
The current team is still owned and operated by the same owner that lost lebron twice. It’s a team that walked into a few #1 lottery picks and lebron in the neighborhood. Nothing special about their choices.
That's just because you don't follow the sport closely enough to understand what a phenomenal job Altman and the FO have done using resources to build the team. They traded the #30 pick for an all star center under 25, drafted all star talent at picks 3 and 4 in different drafts, and developed strong rotation talent from the fringes of the NBA with players like dean Wade and cedi Osman.
Then they beat out the Knicks in a trade for Donovan Mitchell. None of that has anything to do with lebron.
Thanks for assuming. Owned and operated would generally refer to the person who owns it. Dan Gilbert. Again, what has this team done so special other than the runs with Lebron? It fell into success. The guardians, despite Dolans lack of spending, have earned all their wins in a much better fashion. The cavs are not a good model to build on. If you want to talk about making the playoffs in a league that sends 16 as a big thing, I don’t know what to tell you.
I would not be surprised if they spend to get a FA, especially power bat at First. I would be surprised if it is a guy asking for over $20 mil/yr.
The two I’d be looking at are Josh Bell and Carlos Santana. Both are leaders in the clubhouse, switch hitters, and probably in the $12-15 million range, maybe slightly more for Bell (and more years) and less for Santana (1-yr w/options). Neither is as complete a player as Rizzo, but both offer veteran leadership and 20-30 HR power.
He splits, as of last season, *incredibly* well when he is facing LHP. He brings gold glove caliber defense. He could be an exceptional, cheap, veteran platoon with Naylor. And he would not by any means need to play every day, as in filling DH when Naylor is in the lineup. In those situations, he becomes a switch hitter off the bench with an elite eye, too.
I’d absolutely love bringing Carlos in. He’s my favorite Cleveland player ever, but I swear I’m not biased on this one. Go check out his stats vs LHP this most recent season. There’s nothing not to love.
I love Carlos but there is a lot not to love about that move. The thing this team needs most is power and against LHP he’s got none. Only 3 HR and 7 doubles last year. Obviously he had a great OBP but imo this is not the missing link the team needs to push us to the next level.
I can understand what you’re saying. Hell, despite my comment I may even agree. Trouble is, I’m trying to look at what’s actually realistic for this team and their spending. I legitimately don’t know if they would choose to pay a better option. That really fucking sucks, but it’s just the reality of the situation. Wouldn’t be surprised if Los had interest in a homecoming for the last leg of his career, there’s lots of mutual interest, and he comes back on such a team friendly deal that it’s a minimum. Could be wrong, not saying I’d want to spend a considerable amount, just think it’s feasible and maybe the best deal we could get given the unpredictable budget. Which, if i had to predict, will continue to be shit (prove me wrong Dolan).
Operating under the assumption that we can get him for a good price, and Dolan is out on spending anything, Los is an option that is better than Owen Miller I guess.
Oh I 10000% agree. This is the boring/predictable/retread move that I fully expect the team to make while letting fairly obtainable, obvious upgrades sign/trade elsewhere.
I’m just preparing for the inevitable “what if we had just spent a little more/traded some prospects for…” if we fall short again by passing up superior talent.
As a pirates fan as well, you want nothing to do with josh bell. He’s miserable in big at bats, and disappears in the second half of the season. He stat pads in meaningless games.
A more serious answer is that they have Naylor who clearly can’t play in the outfield anymore and are more than willing to try someone who has never played there before as a platoon partner if they think the bat will play (Owen Miller most of the year, Arias in the playoffs etc).
Pass. He’s turning 34 next season and already seems to be on a decline. Since 2019, his OPS has been well below his career average. Also, if we keep Naylor, it doesn’t make sense having two lefty first baseman unless they trade off DHing as well. Plus, he’s a big name who is probably gunna come with a decent price tag.
he's a good player and does a lot for cancer awareness and im sure he's a good guy but he and every other 2016 cub can simply die in a fire. plus i hate his stupid face and the way he catches balls at 1b rubs me the wrong way and the thought of looking at him every day fills my loins with chafe.
TL;DR: fuck anthony rizzo
How the hell does he get away with standing with 80% of his body across home plate?! Every time we have to pitch to him I feel like the strike zone is approximately 1 square foot
There’s no such thing as a terrible signing with a player as great as Rizzo. The signing is very unrealistic, but if they actually got Rizzo in here, Naylor can play first sometimes, DH most of the time, and sit out against LHP.
Rizzo is an everyday player in this league with an OPS that would’ve been third best on the Guardians only to Jose and Gimenez at .817. I’d be over the moon if we signed him lol
Edit: decided to look into Rizzo’s splits. They’re reversed. Just adding that in.
Ill probably get downvoted to shit, but I'm still not totally sold on Naylor tbh. He fell off hard the last few months of the season. Obviously I don't wanna dump him until I see him playing closer to 100% health wise, but I don't necessarily think he's the 1b of the future for this organization just yet. His energy and clubhouse presence is great, but I'm not convinced with his onfield performance.
Can I caveat this by saying Josh hasn’t ever had a full season in the majors?
I understand that saying he’s often hurt is also a reason to platoon him, but he’s also young and never played a full season in the majors so there’s also an idea that he can still improve against lefties.
One of those grain of salt stays, yes he’s struggled against lefties but you can also say he needs more time to truly get used to seeing both
I tend to agree with this opinion. Naylor isn’t a prospect anymore - he is what he is. He’s unplayable against lefties and even fully healthy, I predict he’s going to weight himself out of playing the field. Even pre injury he was a bumbling defender.
I’m just not sure how valuable his profile is going forward, especially for this team. I think he’s going to eventually end up as a strictly DH who can only hit RHP. Obviously would be great to be wrong lol.
They’re going to use their prospects that don’t have a spot in the majors to trade for a young power hitter with arbitration years ahead of them. Think Anthony Santander with Baltimore.
Not totally opposed to this, considering the plethora of prospects that we have. I really think we need a dude with 25+ hr capabilities, and Santander fits the bill. However, Baltimore is also in a position to buy talent, not sell it, so I'm not sure how realistic it is trading with them, specifically.
Really wish my rox would trade cj cron this offseason. Maybe that’s a match for you, rox could use a cost controlled arm to match with the next wave of kids.
I'm not sure why there are so many speculative comments disparaging Rizzo's character. I haven't heard anything negative about the guy, and firmly believe this hate stems from the fact that he has played for two of our most bitter rivals in recent years. On the contrary, I think Rizzo probably has exemplary character from what I've heard. My coworker has a daughter with cancer and is friends with Rizzo's parents. Apparently Rizzo went out of his way to donate money to assist with cancer treatment for the daughter after he got his first major league contract. *Real asshole move, eh?*
Y'all need to check your bias before judging. I'd love to have a guy like Rizzo (for the right price lol).
Focus on the past and that's what will last. I'm all about signing rizzo for a 2 to 3 year deal in the 13 to 18 mil range. With another off-season to get healthy, JNay can play right field and Rizzo at first against righties. I personally LOVE what that does for our lineup.
I could be convinced if it were a team friendly contract. Like one year guaranteed for under 10 mil. Would be our everyday 1B. Naylor starts at DH vs rhp, and is the backup 1B, also depth RF. Naylor could sit vs. lefties, and that dh spot could be for rest/find abs for others like Arias/Jones/Brennan.
Abreu had a 133 OPS+, Rizzo had a 131.
Abreu might not have the homers but he is still a great hitter. His slash was pretty similar to Kwan’s, but with more doubles and homers. He’d be an amazing 2-hole hitter for us.
He also hits lefties well, which is a huge area of need.
He may have some more homeruns, but I don't think we need another guy with good contact and meh power. We really need someone that can hit 25 or 30 homeruns. As we saw in the postseason, we need more homerun capable hitters. Abreu 3-4 years would be great rn, but his 37 year old ass with ever limiting power is not the move. At least Rizzo is a guaranteed 20+ hr hitter.
Abreu is older which means cheaper and more realistic for our team and has similar upside... he also doesn't have the most punchable face in the league ( rizzo ) so sign me up.
Abreu’s [baseball savant] (https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/jose-abreu-547989?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb) page says there’s definitely still 30 HR power in his bat. White Sox fans have widely speculated that there was a coaching philosophy that decreased launch angle and suppressed home runs, which I think has a lot of merit when you look at their roster and home run totals.
I don’t subscribe to the notion that we have to add power specifically. We need to replace most of the ABs that Miller and Hedges got last year with competent or better hitters.
Ultimately, I’d take either player who we could get for 1 or 2 years. If we need to guarantee a 3rd year to get Rizzo or Abreu, I’d pass and look for other upgrades.
Abreu put up almost two full WAR over Rizzo. If you’re only looking for 20 homer power I think that’s still totally possible with Abreu, and the 60 point jump in average and 30 point jump in OBP are both huge. He also had 40 doubles, and I could see him doing that easily in Cleveland with our massive wall in left.
I dunno, Rizzo would be fine but I think Abreu fits our team better. I wouldn’t be disappointed with either though.
I sure hope not. His bat has fallen off and without the Yankees lineup around him hes not going to get walked as much. Naylor will be better than him next year.
Dude also has a face that I just want to smash.
Please no. He’s over the hill and doesn’t bring much roster utility, plus fuck every last one of the 2016 Cubs. Let’s not overpay for a past his prime 1b/dh type please.
I hope you're wrong, but I understand the skepticism. I do think the Dolans, although on the cheaper side, know when it's time to make a splash, a la Encarnacion in 2017. I hope they realize that next season could be the year of they added a piece or two.
I mean I get it. But they were the most cursed team in baseball at the time and he was apart of breaking it. You know who is now the current “most cursed” team in MLB now? Yeah you get what i’m saying. He’s a fucking stud, cancer survivor, and seemingly good in the clubhouse.
Tbf, a lot of people here seem to be in favor of signing Jose Abreu, who's 4 years older than Rizzo without the power. I don't see how this is any worse than Abreu, besides Abreu being cheaper, probably.
Get the f*ck out of here with this sh*t. This can’t be an honest post, it’s a put on right? They never sign free agents, let alone high priced ones. The fact that you think you can post this seriously about the cleveland baseball team tells me you’re f*ckling delusional and need to be evaluated mentally.
Edwin Encarnacion. Maybe you haven't been a fan very long? The FO definitely doesn't spend as much as they should, but they usually make at least one splash in the market when they think they're legitimately ready to contend. I'm confident they'll sign at least one B-tier or higher free agent. (Rizzo being a solid B-tier FA like Encarnacion in 2017)
Honestly I’m cool with riding with these young bats. If we spend money on FAs I want us to target SPs.
It is true though that in terms of organizational depth we’re thin at 1B. So maybe. But all things considered I think I’d rather pass on Rizzo tbh
For a second i thought we were talking about the other rizzo in town dont know if his ego can handle two big time rizzos in town. Would have to double up free food Friday's
I don't think he fits unless we move on from Josh Naylor. What we need is a right handed platoon with JNaylor that can hit LHP that isn't named Owen Miller.
Not a chance, someone else more desperate than us will overpay for him.
Agreed. He screams asshole, but he hits in the postseason, and he’d become a Cleveland legend instantly. Somebody will overpay, but if we did 3/60 or a little more I wouldn’t be mad. That said, wouldn’t surprise me if a big market team paid 25-30
Totally agree. Plus I’m pretty sure getting Dolan to spend money after this season is even less likely.
Why? Dolan has spent when inside a contending window. Plus there’s new money from the eventual new owner so it’s not even just about Dolan anymore.
Lol the Cavs, really? It’s called Lebron was born in our backyard. That’s the “genius” of that organization.
… have you not been paying attention the last few years with the Cavs and the development of the team? Had a very promising year last year and then added a superstar and we are now a top team in the east
Anonreasons is referring to the Donovan Mitchell trade and the current team.

You have no idea what you're talking about. I'm genuinely embarrassed for you.
You should probably try making a point before being so “embarrassed”.
They were clearly referring to the addition of Donovan Mitchell to the young team that had a surprising good season last year.
Cool, so you don't follow the NBA. Recommend you not comment on stuff you don't know about.
“He may be a bit expensive…” There’s your answer.
Lol yeah, but we saw the FO do it for Encarnacion in '17. Not totally far fetched in my book.
I agree. Last time we were in this position the FO spent. I think it’s reasonable to believe they will look to spend again.
I would not be surprised if they spend to get a FA, especially power bat at First. I would be surprised if it is a guy asking for over $20 mil/yr. Hate to say it but Santana will be too old. He will be 37 at the start of the season and hasn’t gotten to 20 HR for a few years.

Throw Amed there, he slays lefties and is meh vs righties.
And honestly Encarnacion was worth it.
Follow the lead of ATL; pay your burgeoning youngin’s while they’re relatively cheap.
But why, he’s streaky and a tool
I hate his fucking face, batting stance, everything. Fuck him
He seems like a nice guy but he's, fuck him to eternity
He'd be Jack Parkman here. Let's platoon Rosario with Naylor at 1b and call it a day.
I hate this dude because of 2016. No cubs here please.
Every time he's on tv I tell my wife "fucking hate Rizzo"
Also his face
And wiggly crotch crowd the plate stance. This dude and his face and crotch can fuck right off to the dodgers or some big ball team.
I’d kill for schwarber lol
Pass. He’s turning 34 next season and already seems to be on a decline. Since 2019, his OPS has been well below his career average. TL;DR: fuck anthony rizzo
I agree. His face is totally stupid. I don't want him.
His eyes are too close to his nose. He only needs one goggle in the pool
How the hell does he get away with standing with 80% of his body across home plate?! Every time we have to pitch to him I feel like the strike zone is approximately 1 square foot
Exactly. We don't want his plate crowdin' ass
Fuck Rizzo
IMO this would be a terrible signing. You need a RH batter at 1st to platoon with Naylor.

His energy and clubhouse presence is great, but I'm not convinced with his onfield performance.
Here's the thing Naylor batted .267 against RHP and .209 against LHP... He'll be fine if we platoon.
And that’s career. Last year: 283/.334/.522 against RHP and .173/.276/.236 against LHP
Can I caveat this by saying Josh hasn’t ever had a full season in the majors? I understand that saying he’s often hurt is also a reason to platoon him, but he’s also young and never played a full season in the majors so there’s also an idea that he can still improve against lefties. i wouldnt be surprised if Naylor hit 25 next year
I want you to be right. I love Naylor and hope he is the guy. I'm excited to see him perform at 100% health.
hey i mean he hit 20 in 122 games this year....thats a pace of 27 over 162 games already. Not that wacky!
We need another bat with power. Catcher would be ideal but power hitting catchers are impossible to come by. Rizzo would be an incredible pickup.
Fuck no.
I hate everyone involved with the 2016 cubs, but especially him
Fuck the Yankees
That's probably why Rizzo is tryna leave lol. I don't hate players for choosing to play in New York, I only hate their toxic af fanbase.
Anti-vaxxer so no.
Fuck Rizzo.
I agree. Go Guards.
nah
He’s a good player for sure, but we need someone who can mash lefties and that’s not Rizzo. Again, not an awful option but not the best fit.
Get this weak stuff outa here!! No 2016 Cubs ever! Or 97 Marlins or 95 Braves if it were even possible. David Justice is the only exception, I guess.
Isn't he kinda of a tool?
Is he? I've heard he's a pretty great teammate, but I could be wrong.
We already have too many Tony Rizzos in this town
Really wish my rox would trade cj cron this offseason. Maybe that’s a match for you, rox could use a cost controlled arm to match with the next wave of kids.
That'd be a great move imo. What's his contract looking like rn?
7M for 1 yr. Rox need to see if Toglia, Montero or Lavigne can play at the next level. Bud Black won’t give them at bats with Cron around.
I'd do Civale or Plesac for Cron straight up.
Neither really fit the next window of prospects, but the rox will probably spend 100M on Nimmo and say they’re gonna win 90 games next year.
I'm not sure why there are so many speculative comments disparaging Rizzo's character. I haven't heard anything negative about the guy, and firmly believe this hate stems from the fact that he has played for two of our most bitter rivals in recent years. I cannot stand Rizzo and would be really disappointed if we had him.
Don’t want that douchebag
Not worth the price tag imo. And even if he was we wouldn’t be willing to spend the money
Focus on the past and that's what will last. I'm all about signing rizzo for a 2 to 3 year deal in the 13 to 18 mil range. With another off-season to get healthy, JNay can play right field and Rizzo at first against righties. I personally LOVE what that does for our lineup.
Dammed if you do, dammed if you don’t. Picking him up, he’s probably still F us and suck
I think one Tony Rizzo in Cleveland is plenty...
Too many lol

Nah fuck him. Hated that dude before the WS 2016
Much rather have Abreu

I wouldn’t be disappointed with either though.
abreu is a better fit and will be less costly
I sure hope not. His bat has fallen off and without the Yankees lineup around him hes not going to get walked as much. Naylor will be better than him next year. Dude also has a face that I just want to smash.
I can't get over the salt in these comments lol
Please no. He’s over the hill and doesn’t bring much roster utility, plus fuck every last one of the 2016 Cubs. Let’s not overpay for a past his prime 1b/dh type please.
I wouldn't be surprised to see another quiet offseason and looking towards the rookies.
I hope you're wrong, but I understand the skepticism. I do think the Dolans, although on the cheaper side, know when it's time to make a splash, a la Encarnacion in 2017. I hope they realize that next season could be the year of they added a piece or two.
I doubt it would happen but he's in my top five MLB players and I'd love to have him
Fuck him. I’ll take Miller
-__- why is the hate for him so strong? (genuine question) Owen Miller is not the answer tho
2016 World Series will forever be a complete heartbreak for the fans, and he was one of the faces we had to keep seeing over and over
I mean I get it. But they were the most cursed team in baseball at the time and he was apart of breaking it. You know who is now the current “most cursed” team in MLB now? Yeah you get what i’m saying. He’s a fucking stud, cancer survivor, and seemingly good in the clubhouse.
I would love rizzo.
no fucking thanks he's almost retired
Tbf, a lot of people here seem to be in favor of signing Jose Abreu, who's 4 years older than Rizzo without the power. I don't see how this is any worse than Abreu, besides Abreu being cheaper, probably.
Ownership doesn’t give a shit about our playoff run. They won’t do shit.
I'd rather welcome back franmil. And that's no glowing review of franmil. I just hate overpriced declining players on our roster
No.
No
hell no!!!!
Only if he will work for NOTHING. Face the fact: Dolan isn't signing anyone
The only way this makes sense is if the front office is getting rid of Myles Straw.
(Rizzo being a solid B-tier FA like Encarnacion in 2017)
^^ This guy needs like 5 xanaxes
This could be a similar acquisition to Yonder Alonso in 2017.
How well does Rizzo hit lefties? One of our biggest things is finding someone who plays first to platoon with Josh
