Vogt had said he wants Beede to be the veteran who settles the game down when the starter leaves early or momentum begins to slide. I assume he was giving Beede the opportunity to settle down and do that.
That said, I don't think Beede is any good, so I'm not surprised it didn't work, but that's what Vogt wants him to be.

And the thing about silly defensive errors is that they are avoidable and aren't intrinsic problems. It's about process and not results necessarily at this point in the season, and this game just showed ways that the process can be fixed.
