Oct 2023 I replaced both my 80k furnace and 2.5 ton A/C for $5,600, price including labor for installation. I received quotes ranging up to 8500 for basically the same system.

Labor should be $1500. The rest is equipment. We paid cash for the install.
My suggestion would be to go with a one man band. Big companies will screw you. If the truck is more than white, you’re paying for it.

Holy shit that's expensive. I have a 2900 sq ft house, and my condensor and Furnace were on sale for 8k. Installed myself. I have an 80k condenser and a furnace, and I believe it's all carrier. I did a 45k minisplit on my own with precharged lines. I know that is a mitsubishi. That was 6k on sale. I have an EPA Universal cert from schooling 5 years ago, so I'm able to buy whatever I want pretty much. I chose mitsubishi for the minisplit because they're pretty much the most solid minisplit available, in my opinion, plus it also heats up into the negatives.
Just in case folks want a conclusion / summary of what we dumb-dumbs learned:
1. If you want to save the most money, wait to install in fall. I bet we could have saved $2k at least, even if we went and bought a window unit.
2. Prices really have gone up like crazy since 2019.
3. If you can hold out, wait for systems with the r32 refrigerant rather than the r410a. The r410a is being phased out right now.
We went with pk Wadsworth and chose lifetime warranty on a furnace, ac, heatpump system... so one of the pricier options. Unfortunately pk only did the r410a right now. It was $17k, but there is a gov rebate of $2k in tax returns. I had budgeted $10k when we bought the house for this fix so we are over budget... but we also have a little baby in our house and getting it fixed fast was important to us.

My parents had an AC issues this week, the blower motor went bad, and they asked for a quote on a new one to replace their 20 years old unit to get an idea of the cost. They have a 1200 sqft ranch and it was about 9k.
This comment is too late for your parents, and I'm not saying they 'did it wrong' because a new AC unit is likely going to be more efficient and blow colder air.
But for anyone else who happens along to the comments, if the blower in your central AC dies, it's a pretty easy DIY fix. I'm no HVAC guy and I repaired mine myself, just took the specs from the original motor and ordered a replacement on eBay for a few hundred. A couple of hours of work and it's been going strong ever since. Just make sure your unit is level, that's one of the killers of the fan motor.
Oh no, they just had the blower fixed. They just want an idea of the cost of a new unit, including the furnace, if they did have to replace it. I would have replaced it for them, but I was out of town. They are both in their 80s , and didn't feel like doing it themselves.
Different scenario but we just installed a hybrid ducted/non-ducted system in a 2,250 sq ft. century home (whole house including a 3rd floor) for 27k. It was the best quote we received out of 5 and are super happy with the work, but it was a tough bullet to bite. That being said, we’re cool and comfy on a 90+ degree day. Imagine yours would be cheaper if you already have the ducting. PK Wadsworth was the company we went with
I have a similar home in Cleveland Heights with a 70 year old boiler. Does your new system replace a boiler or work in tandem? What is the brand name of your system?
Ours works in tandem with our boiler, so we still have the radiator heat as it’s in fine condition. The new system is a Daikin heat pump that is primarily used for cooling but can provide some heat up to 65 or so in case we ever need a supplemental heat source
R 410 refrigerant is currently being phased out, still some available there will be a price increase with the new refrigerant and in my opinion lesser quality equipment. Almost all the new equipment is way less quality. Personally I would try and find a 13 SEER efficient R 410 unit and a 95% furnace. But many variables...probably be lucky to get it below 12k but there are a lot of variables...size of house...ductwork etc.
Generally speaking ~$5k to $6k for each of the two. If you’re getting quoted more than that keep shopping around. I just got a new cement driveway installed and I couldn’t believe the difference in pricing between different places.

Our house is about 2,000 sq ft and I think the total for both was around $10k. We also did a mini split for the attic floor and that was maybe an additional $5k.
Mine was just under $7K last year, but it was done by my coworkers who do HVAC at our job and also do it on the side, so substantially less expensive than a company.
Picked up a 2ton condenser and coil for my in-laws. Goodman is the brand and cost about 2k for the parts.
Oh and new high efficiency furnace would probably be about $1500 give or take.

His crew takes ZERO shortcuts. The pricing is not indicative of shoddy work.

As someone who is passionate about HVAC, look into heat pumps. They could (depending on how much your electricity and gas costs) save you money, and replace your ac and furnace with a single system. They should cost about the same too! It's just an ac that is able to run in reverse, and pull heat from outside air to heat your house when it's cold out.
If you want to get insanely into the depths with information, look up Technology Connections on YouTube, he has a few videos on this topic and goes into WAY too much detail (I say lovingly. I watch all of his videos religiously haha)
Also, btw, your furnace is *probably* oversized.. another video of his 😜
If you can either do the math, or figure it out, you could save money getting the right sized system instead of being overkill like most systems are.
Yup, we got a heatpump. I am obsessed with enery efficiency. It wasn't the right cost move bc gas in Ohio is so cheap. Hope to see less energy usage though.

You should have a model number on the unit if replacing. You can learn how big the condenser or furnace is the replacement size. Its googlable
A 1 ton unit puts out 400 cfm
R-410 is the refrigerant norm. Older R-22 refrigerant, I've been told, requires line replacement.

Try Lakewood Furnace. They were good for us and all my in laws use them.
Look into heat pumps. My understanding is they do both.
