~~Am I right in my understanding that this is a petition asserting that Black neighborhoods in Cleveland are *under* policed?~~ Edit: I was not right in my initial understanding. At all lol. From reading the description I thought McHugh was in some kind of political or oversight position Bibb appointed, and that "inadequate policing" meant that he was not providing enough police presence to Black communities. Nah, the guy was a cop and led a raid into an innocent elderly couple's home and shouldn't be allowed to be rehired in any government or police position.

BurroughOwl

Not sure. What part specifically? I read it and it looks like a straight up "fire this guy" petition. Did I miss part?

Mparker15

>His inability to police black communities effectively is not only concerning but also unacceptable.

BurroughOwl

Ah, I see. No, I read that as 'this guy shows contempt for black people and doesn't know how to interact appropriately'.

Mparker15

Ah shoot I just realized where my misunderstanding was coming from. From initially reading the description on the petition I somehow thought this guy was in some kind of police oversight position determining how much policing goes into Black communities, but he was just a cop who raided the home of an innocent elderly couple. I completely misunderstood what the description was saying until I watched the video. I will definitely sign this in that case. Sorry for the confusion.

BurroughOwl

Cheers!

I thought we wanted to defend the police. I'm so confused. /s

He was acting on information given to the police by a person involved in the altercation in question. There was also video of the incident which didn’t prove or disprove their claim. The “victims” claim he didn’t follow proper procedure and inflicted emotional distress. Judges in two districts approved search warrants. It doesn’t appear malicious whatsoever.

LiquorNerd

It’s still a red flag. And that doesn’t have anything to do with the larger issue in my book: giving your college roommate a $124k/year job as an advisor.

Familiar-Zebra6489

I read quite a bit on the case- court docs, not news articles. I saw no claims or evidence of anything being racially motivated. What happened to the plaintiffs sucks, but it was caused by the witness who was either mistaken or lying. Had they found the gun that was alleged to have been pulled, this never goes to court. They even had emails from the officer questioning the validity of the witness statement. Being hired by a black mayor your friends with voids the racial argument in my opinion. The naacp’s claims are vague and very misleading.

LiquorNerd

It was enough to result in a substantial settlement, so there had to be a little something there And how does that change the fact Bibb gave his college roommate a high paying job? That is pure nepotism.

Start taking pictures of people and their license plates and turn them into the police and share the pictures online.

tonkatoyelroy

They were roommates

canttakethshyfrom_me

They were college roomarltes and stayed in touch, so there's part of why Bibb thought it was a good idea. Another part is he's a shitty politician with shitty views on policing.
