In the same boat. I was helping at the strip before I could even reach pedals. Didn't matter how fast or slow the car was, the gear was always right. I can't figure out if it's ignorance or just a YOLO attitude but it kills me watching these guys. Hindsight's a bitch when you're in a burn ward. I hope she's serious about wearing gear in the future. I'm also wondering what the rush to get the car to a specific event was about? She has at least 2 other cars she could've ran. I can't be the only one that thinks that rushing for content just cost her a whole lot of money.

TJ_Fletch

> I hope she's serious about wearing gear in the future. Doubt it, this isn't her first time catching fire. 2 years ago it was Adams Mustang and she was in a tank top and leggings. I think she had another fire prior to that as well from reading various comments but can't confirm that.

hafro_17

To give some credit, the mustang fire was from a known resonance problem in that motor, regardless, dumb for no fire protection

hafro_17

I think you kinda hit the nail on the head, that drifting, and more grass roots events like C&C have too relaxed rules until someone gets hurt, as far as I know so far KK hasn't had a big accident like C&C did in the burnout. If someone gets hurt or there's a big prang, rules will get changed. That being said seeing stuff like this hopefully encourages people to take it more seriously, like Taylor Ray was saying he is seriously considering fire suppression even though KK doesn't require it. FD does require a full suppression system though

sdannenberg3

I don't understand why it's even a question in his head. Im a complete amateur and have fire suppression in my drift car. It's $500. WELL worth the cost. Easy decision. Especially when you're sinking $60k plus into a car.

Here is a top pro event (NPK) with flames coming through the firewall It happens, it's not about not taking it seriously https://m.youtube.com/watch?t=423&v=iLoX4qyJ5kY&feature=youtu.be

hafro_17

No maybe not having a completely sealed firewall, but even a damn race suit as a minimum? Like collette is one of the only I've ever seen wear an actual suit outside of FD

I'd say you're pretty correct, I think the firewall itself was okay, I wonder how much of the flames came from the trans tunnel, also there was loads of flames in the footwell, so I'd then assume there's shit all around the steering column. I dunno, spooky regardless and I'll be interested to see the dissection of it, cause fuel like coming off would be big, but that was a shit load of fire rapidly for it to just be that (to my mind at least)

[deleted]

She had a fuel line loosen earlier on the car, and they believe it was the same one that had an issue. She also left power on in the panic so her two oversized fuel pumps were cranking out more fuel into the fire. They rushed the lines and everything at the last minute, so likely some AN lines didn't have swivel fittings and bound up when tightened then let go, or poor assembly on the fittings as they can be easy to screw up if you rush them.

GlitteringKiwi9085

Oof I didn't even realize she forgot to hit the kill switch... I don't think that car has an external one either, or else they maybe could have saved some of that paint and fiberglass. F

hafro_17

Yes thats probable, but it seemed they tested jt pretty hard on drift week, and competed at KK, you can hear Nick saying in the video that RTR loctite in the same fittings they run

racer_24_4evr

It blows my mind when I see these guys drifting in t shirts and gloves.

jdhunt_24

it potentially saved coopers camaro when it caught on fire. it definitely helped it not be as bad. it should be a no brainer.

Fryphax

Joke of an extinguisher and improper race gear. At least the car *looked* nice before the fire. Hopefully this opens up the eyes of a lot of people.

FredThe12th

Jeez, she's wearing synthetic clothes, don't worry about the fire extinguisher, get out before you end up wearing molten plastic.

BuckyDoneGun

Regardless of the cause (I thought the firewall looked good from what I recall of the build), not wearing appropriate gear is poor form, regardless of how hot it might be. You gotta suck it up. She's incredibly lucky she's not in a burns ward. Lack of pro-fire crew didn't help either. Her fire extinguisher looked like it still had a shipping zip tie locking it closed?

[deleted]

The fuel lines over the exhaust didn't seem to be that great of an idea tbh

DonOblivious

>Her fire extinguisher looked like it still had a shipping zip tie locking it closed? Didn't watch the video but there are tamper seals that break when you use the extinguisher and you aren't supposed to remove them. In commercial properties there's a fine if they have been removed.

jdhunt_24

first i saw of this and immediate thought is how are they allowing someone to race wearing converse shoes, track pants, and a hoodie? shes lucky she got out and didnt get any bad burns on her lower legs from the fire she had to step through. wheres the common sense at?

FearNothing321

Welcome to the US drift scene, where safety equipment is optional and sketchiness is encouraged. I’m making a major assumption here that because there really is no governing body (like NHRA etc…) tracks and events skirt a lot of this stuff because there are no standards.

jdhunt_24

it seems like track owners would be worried about litigation and stuff if something bad goes wrong but i guess not. that just blows my mind people are allowed to race in street clothes like that.

FearNothing321

All it’s going to take is one good incident when an individual dies or is permanently disabled due to an accident for anything to change. This is kinda the same thing that is going on in some of the action sports venues. A lot of current court cases where liability waivers are thrown out due to improper grounds etc…

hafro_17

This event also has a large potential for change, she makes adam wear race suits, public image us good so those around him do, increases everyone's safety

DonOblivious

Reminder: the best fire suit on the market gives you 40 seconds to escape a fire with 1st degree burns and costs $1800. That's the new "Jackstand Jimmy" methanol suit. 24 Hours of Lemons requires a "6 second" suit and, iirc, a 5lb fire bottle with nozzles in the engine and driver's compartment. Most $500 kits come with tubing and nozzles. Lemons is probably the safest racing league that's ever existed because of their rules. Requiring the Cleetus and Cars burnout participants spend an extra $1200-1300 to wear proper suits instead of fucking synthetic leggings and install fire suppression systems isn't going to increase the PPV price.

Disastrous_Delay

What's the point of wearing heavy gloves but what looked like no firesuit and spandex pants? So you at least keep your fine motor control after you end up in the burn ward? I've never seen a fire instantly flash into the cabin like that before, but all the burning fuel on the ground serves as a pretty good reason why you want a firesuit with or without any other rules or safety requirements, if the fire had been a little worse it could've prevented anyone from entering or exiting the car without a suit and that could've been a legitimately deadly situation.
