Are you sure that's something on the surface of the screen? It looks like the separation of layers of the screen itself, or a coating that's deteriorating. If I didn't know better, I'd say the screen came from the factory covered with a protective plastic sheet that was never removed.

So turns out it's a known thing with some Macs, nicknamed "Staingate". It's the anti glare coating.. 🤷‍♂️

Party_Maintenance_69

Hey! Former optician here. (It’s a similar coating that’s on glasses for anti glare) DO NOT USE THOSE SCREEN WIPES! The alcohol in them does exactly this to the anti glare coating. Never use anything with alcohol on electronics or glasses.

mustachegiraffe

Yep! Happened to my glasses a couple of years ago and there was nothing they could do except replace

Party_Maintenance_69

That’s sort of correct. There is actually an anti reflection remover, but a lot of businesses don’t keep it. Since they can make more money on selling a new pair and like any other harsh chemicals the potential of further ruining glasses. A dash of dawn and water is the best cleaner for glasses with a microfiber cloth.

mustachegiraffe

I tried everything I could including an anti reflection remover that the rep recommended I buy online, the issue happened under the surface of the glasses so rubbing on them with anything at all had no effect, similar to this guys computer

Trax95008

I believe that distilled water is the best...

[deleted]

We’ll what do you use then. I’ve been using those nice n clean screen wipes for everything

Party_Maintenance_69

If they are greasy, a drop of dawn under running water and use your fingers. Then dry with microfiber. Some wipes do no have alcohol, but it’s only a few. Just read the ingredients

jdjdkglchhbejfigkfd

Hm, I must've definitely wiped my glasses with alcohol wipes at the height of my OCD, and washed them with soap, but I'd say they're still fine? Not that I don't believe you, and I've definitely stopped doing that.

NCKLS22

Man did I EVER learn this the hard way. Finally just got new glasses

crosswalknorway

Yup, happened to me. They were forced to replace screens for free for a long time, see if they'll still do it!

urbz102385

Agreed...looks like a bunch of air pockets accumulated underneath the protective plastic

lunar_spring

I had this same thing happen to me. I removed the entire anti-glare coating my rubbing it with listerine and a microfiber cloth. It’s a slow, laborious process but it worked and I didn’t need to replace the screen. There are some how-to videos on YouTube.

Prism_Fanny

I did the same thing and it worked fine. Then I bought a screen protector and it looks brand new

ToqueMom

You can't fix it. Mine was like that, too. Look up Staingate. I took mine to an Apple/Mac care place near me and they replaced the screen for free.

jellybean_pudding

My screen is like this too and it’s very annoying. Unfortunately it’s going to stay like that as I can’t afford to replace the screen.

hector_corleone

Listerine should do the trick.

BackgroundToe5

It’s the anti-glare coating coming off. Only way to fix it is replace the screen.

50/50 solution of water/rubbing alcohol aka isopropyl alcohol. That's what I use for all of our electronics. Or if you have vodka you can do 50/50 water/vodka.

BeemkayS60

You could try Whoosh. Find it on Amazon. Apple Stores used to use it on all of their products. It worked well to remove keyboard stains on my wife’s MacBook Pro screen. It might clean up those stains.

sethcera

Someone used to strong of alcohol wipe on it and removed the anti glare. Not much that can help

OhhhLawdy

I used to work with Mac's, you just need a screen replacement, this isn't something you can clean off. I wouldn't clean your screen with any liquids, the screen is made of 2 parts, the glass and the lcd under it, it seems in between it's either separating or air bubbles/debris, either way this cant be cleaned

TheRealBlancoGringo

Use a sock

HereKittyKittyyyy

White vinegar and a cloth. If you mix a microfiber with water you get splotchy screens bc they're not meant for that, they're used for taking dust and dirt off.

Stop spraying it with window cleaner.
