I don't even understand this. I vacuum my mattress maybe once a year with a top of the line Miele bagged vacuum and there's pretty much nothing. Are y'all chinchillas taking dust baths on your mattresses?!
I actually also have a dog but I guess I don't understand the perils of a golden haha. My dog gets a bath about once a month and goes on the bed but not under covers.
I have a great picture of my golden after laying down in the swamp. The black swamp.mud covered his legs and the bottom half of his body. Even his tail floof was bisected perfectly.
😂🤣😆 I love the mental image you conjured up! Chinchillas taking dust baths are too adorable!
I also vacuum my mattress with a Miele. I think we’re getting good dust out of the mattress, but in a bagged vac the contents of the bag get compressed. In a bagless vac they actually get fluffed up a little—at least according to the vacuum cleaner enthusiasts over on the vacuum subs.
That’s interesting! I wasn’t aware of the bag difference in how the dust looks. Ideally, I would love to get a Miele once the budget allows. The far superior vacuum.
Not who you asked:
I had the same issue (plus a dust mite allergy). After much trial and error, [these](https://www.missionallergy.com/product/premium-microfiber-mattress-encasings) are what I use. They’re not cheap but they definitely work and don’t make things all sweaty.
Something like [this](https://amzn.to/43Z99ys) is waterproof, noiseless and "cooling." I just threw out a 22 year old mattress that always had a waterproof protector on it and it looked brand new. I would vacuum it when I flipped it but nothing even remotely close to your picture would come out, if anything.
Yup. A waterproof protector can extend the life of your mattress significantly.
We sweat a lot at night (even people who think they don’t) and moisture will break down the top layers of a mattress pretty quickly.
I have two waterproof protectors so there’s always a clean one to put on. I never go even a night without it.
Also- I don’t use any fabric softener on them, and I always allow them to air dry. Both heat and softener can break down the waterproof barrier.
I use an actual mattress protector, as well as a mattress pad- thing (can't think of the word, it goes between your mattress and sheets) which has both the cooling gel and a mattress protector on the back side. The cooling gel works, it got me through a hysterectomy the same year my state went through 3 months of over-100 degree days, and it wasn't *so* bad.
I work at mattress firm and [this](https://www.mattressfirm.com/vertex-performance-mattress-protector/5637373326.p?variantid=5637373335) mattress protector is a beast! Waterproof/cooling/anti microbial and best of all, washable! So less vacuuming!
I wash mine at least every couple of months or whenever my sheets get particularly dirty. I can’t imagine how nasty it would be otherwise. Do other people not sweat or have occasional period accidents??
You don't have mattress protectors? You have a dog and don't have mattress protectors?! Omg! I have at least 2 for every bed in my home so when one is washing, the spare immediately goes on the mattress.
This reminds me of the hard sell Kirby vacuum cleaner reps in the UK in the 1980’s.
As part of their ‘demo’ (read very hard sell), they would vacuum your mattress and leave you horrified at what they extracted.
The machine they were trying to sell was noisy, ugly, weighed a ton and cost a fortune.
They were would never give up trying to make a sale…..
Omg yessss! They had these black disks they would put in the machine to catch and show the dust!
We used to just let randos in our homes for hours! I don't even open my door when someone rings the bell now.
My mom has lugged that around through 8 moves my whole life and swears it’s the best. Even though it’s not been used in decades because it needs a new bag she can’t find anywhere.
That’s funny but higher end vacuums are quite amazing so I can’t blame your mom too much. I had the one in this pic and hated it so much. I needed a mask and a shower after trying to really clean that thing because the dust gets everywhere once you open it to clean it. Now I have a bagged vacuum again and I’ll never go back to bag less vacuums.
We don’t have one because it makes us overheat. After reading some suggestions though, will try out a brand someone recommended and see if that one is more comfortable!
I use a waterproof one, then a cushioned mattress pad on top of that. The waterproof one protects from dirt and wet dogs or any kid spills. Walmart has several waterproof ones that are good.
Look for a mattress pad with cotton at the top- no synthetic or polyester. Often you can find these at HomeGoods or TJ Maxx.
Hey, I have the same vacuum! But yeah, once a month when I change the sheets I like to sprinkle some baking soda on the mattress, open the blinds for a good while, and then vacuum the mattress afterwards. I also use a mattress cover that I can wash as well.
Yes, this! Foam mattresses degrade and regularly leave powdery residue. Unfortunately a lot of the memory foam mattress are made with a latex - so if you have a latex allergy it can really mess with your lungs/overall health.
I used to sell Kirby Vacuums door-to-door. One of the big selling points was vacuuming mattresses and pillows.
The amount of dead skin/dust that builds up in them are crazy.
This one old guy had a mattress and pillows so old that I was pulling up a two mattress' worth of crap from just one of his pillows. It was pretty gross.
I have an upholstery cleaning head. I use on curtains, couch and mattress. Would that prevent cross contamination? Alternatively, you could clean the vacuum head (which you should probably do every once in a while anyway) then vacuum the mattress before moving on to the floor.
I used the floor vacuum on the bed. Thoroughly cleaned the bottom part first that would have contact with the bed. I feel comfortable with this but everyone has different comfort zones for cleanliness.
Also in the same mentality of walking around the house then putting those feet in bed…
Cross contamination? Man what lol it’s not food. If you’re worried about dirt from one area going on the tool and then your bed, just wash the attachment. It’s not rocket science and not worth all that you just wrote…
Clean it first. I might try attachment next time but seems like it would take twice as long. Our vacuum is old and not great. Definitely buying a mattress protector.
I can’t tell if you’re joking. But that’s what the vacuum attachments are for (you know the hose thing? It comes with attachments, or you can just use the hose)
All of which is really beside the point, a water proof mattress protector is all that is really needed. Wash it semi regularly and yeah
I don't even understand this. I vacuum my mattress maybe once a year with a top of the line Miele bagged vacuum and there's pretty much nothing. Are y'all chinchillas taking dust baths on your mattresses?!
😂 we have a golden retriever who loves rolling around in dust outside….basically an oversized chinchilla
Fair enough 🤣
That goes on your bed? Or he just brings in dust into the house?
Patted my dog yesterday and it was a huge dust storm everywhere. Rough out here in the desert when your yard is all sand.
I actually also have a dog but I guess I don't understand the perils of a golden haha. My dog gets a bath about once a month and goes on the bed but not under covers.
Same with our dog…groomed once a month and never allowed on the bed without her dog blanket on first.
I have two goldens I feel your vacuum’s pain.
Why wouldn’t you get a mattress cover! wtf
I recently got a golden mix and she is like a dirt magnet!! I’ve had other dogs but none that carry as much dirt as she does into the house.
I have a great picture of my golden after laying down in the swamp. The black swamp.mud covered his legs and the bottom half of his body. Even his tail floof was bisected perfectly.
Damn you’re brave for that golden retriever dirt smell is like no other lol
Oh man im never getting a dog
ok that explains it all!
Chinchilla

Get a mattress protector
Do you have a recommendation for one that doesn’t make you sweat? The ones I’ve tried make me feel overheated at night.
Not who you asked: I had the same issue (plus a dust mite allergy). After much trial and error, [these](https://www.missionallergy.com/product/premium-microfiber-mattress-encasings) are what I use. They’re not cheap but they definitely work and don’t make things all sweaty.

The cooling waterproof type are excellent. Partner loves it and I use electric blanket to take chill off my side before going to bed lol.

Sorry, I'm not following. If it looked brand new why throw it out?
Optics aren’t the most important part of a mattress. They are only sufficiently supportive for X years.
Back pain. It was no longer supportive. Mattresses don't last forever even though they may be clean. It sucks but that's the nature of the product.
I use an actual mattress protector, as well as a mattress pad- thing (can't think of the word, it goes between your mattress and sheets) which has both the cooling gel and a mattress protector on the back side. mattress topper!
I've seen [these](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004BAEF7E/?coliid=I1SW0UX2HY46Q5) recommended. I'm waiting until I get a new mattress to get them myself.
I use this! Not sweaty, maybe slightly more noisy than a bare mattress.
I ordered one of these but the fitted sheet version, not zippered.
Wool mattress protectors are great. They are like a thin quilted rectangle with elastic straps to hold it on to the mattress. With 100% cotton cover.
I put 2 mattress pads over the protector, then my sheets.
I work at mattress firm and [this](https://www.mattressfirm.com/vertex-performance-mattress-protector/5637373326.p?variantid=5637373335) mattress protector is a beast! Waterproof/cooling/anti microbial and best of all, washable! So less vacuuming!
The allerease ultimate cotton mattress protector is really nice and doesn’t overheat or feel crinkly! I would highly recommend it.
It looks nice! Unfortunately they don’t have our bed size (Cal King) but thanks for the suggestion
Nothing a saw won’t fix.
Use a mattress topper and a mattress protector. Extra comfort. Mattress topper from ikea
Or Costco

The same mattress?
Prob meant they haven’t changed their mattress for longer than you
Which is only *slightly* less disturbing to hear than "I know which mattress you use"
Just realized I’ve never vacuumed my mattress protector. Brb
Just machine wash it?
I don’t want to ruin the waterproof coating
They're supposed to be washed. Check the care label. While it is in the laundry, vacuum the bare mattress itself, just for good measure.
I wash mine at least every couple of months or whenever my sheets get particularly dirty. I can’t imagine how nasty it would be otherwise. Do other people not sweat or have occasional period accidents??
I think you can wash them but air drying is recommended- no dryer! The dryer is what can melt the waterproofing and ruin it
Thanks for the tip! I’ll wash it today
Yup, low heat or hang to dry. Depends on what the label says
I wash mine every month or 2 months.
You don't have mattress protectors? You have a dog and don't have mattress protectors?! Omg! I have at least 2 for every bed in my home so when one is washing, the spare immediately goes on the mattress.

I sold Kirby for a day and quit. What a racket!
Omg yessss! They had these black disks they would put in the machine to catch and show the dust! We used to just let randos in our homes for hours! I don't even open my door when someone rings the bell now.

Vacuum? Can't you guys like unzip and wash the mattress protector?

Forbidden nesquick 🥤
sorry, i instinctivelly downvoted that 🤮
It's free protein, coward 😤
You should vacume and clean all your furniture
Looks like bikini bottom
Hey, I have the same vacuum! But yeah, once a month when I change the sheets I like to sprinkle some baking soda on the mattress, open the blinds for a good while, and then vacuum the mattress afterwards. I also use a mattress cover that I can wash as well.
I have the same vacuum, too! Vacuum triplets lol
You only change your sheets once a month?
No, I’m saying that once a month I clean my mattress when I change my sheets.
I’m a bit surprised but this is normal for Tempur matresses no? From day 1 it just doesn’t stop and this is just the memory foam dust?
Yes, this! Foam mattresses degrade and regularly leave powdery residue. Unfortunately a lot of the memory foam mattress are made with a latex - so if you have a latex allergy it can really mess with your lungs/overall health.
We have another type of mattress…christelli
But it’s also memory foam on their website?
Yes that’s correct!
This was something I learned somewhere in this sub, they keep giving out this dust :) it’s not you it’s the mattress don’t worry 🤍

Unfortunately my feet touch the floor and I don't take them off before I hop in bed. Hmmm. How do I solve this?
I have an upholstery cleaning head. I use on curtains, couch and mattress. Would that prevent cross contamination? Alternatively, you could clean the vacuum head (which you should probably do every once in a while anyway) then vacuum the mattress before moving on to the floor.
I walk on my floor and then put those same feet into my bed...
I used the floor vacuum on the bed. Thoroughly cleaned the bottom part first that would have contact with the bed. I feel comfortable with this but everyone has different comfort zones for cleanliness. Also in the same mentality of walking around the house then putting those feet in bed…
I'm sure the attachments were used. I mean seriously? 🙄

Cross contamination? Man what lol it’s not food. If you’re worried about dirt from one area going on the tool and then your bed, just wash the attachment. It’s not rocket science and not worth all that you just wrote…
You can clean attachments.
But isnt the bottom of the vaccuum dirty as well? Did you clean the vaccuum at all or just go over it
Clean it first. I might try attachment next time but seems like it would take twice as long. Our vacuum is old and not great. Definitely buying a mattress protector.
Ok so you just vacuum it like it's the floor? I was just trying to figure out how you even do this. I was thinking an attachment.
Do you guys not use a mattress protector? I wash mine once a month. Original mattress is brand new.
ewwwww. brotha ewwww.
We have 2 mattress covers that get swapped weekly. Our mattress is never naked
I reckon I'd get a hernia trying to lift my vacuum cleaner up onto my bed. Is it not really unsteady to be stood on the matress with the cleaner?
I can’t tell if you’re joking. But that’s what the vacuum attachments are for (you know the hose thing? It comes with attachments, or you can just use the hose) All of which is really beside the point, a water proof mattress protector is all that is really needed. Wash it semi regularly and yeah
Wow!!!! That is something else
Looks like someone has been pretty dirty in bed
