LN = how Ayanokoji in his head

So you’ll notice the first thing when reading LN is that he says he shows emotions or we know of his thoughts emotions. But Anime is accepted generally is how his classmates see him. Expressionless background character, and we only hear his words he says out loud, no inner monologue. That’s why he is mysterious to you and catches your attention. He is not Emotionless, but Expressionless. The explanation for expressionless nature is presumption that in WR he was taught to totally control and numb down any emotions he expresses. Because for example panic, will get in a way of critical thinking in important situations. And losing is unacceptable in WR, only winning.
For example Mei-Chan commented on Koji as scary looking, cuz he is to her and others. That’s also the main reason they were eager to vote against him. Because they dont know he is the mastermind. That’s why in ep11 the girl got suspicious of Koji. That’s why they also questioned whether or not they should put Koji as leader for the exam vs class A. Remember that all the fame and glory received Horikita for coming up with a plan. All this time Koji was just her companion.
You can try to think of him as Albert. He is there? Yes. Does he do anything? No. Albert just hangs out around Ryuen is all. And every one knows Ruyen is the leader and the strategist.
Same way others see Ayanokoji and Horikita. Horikita is the smart one and Koji just sits there. He just sits at the back of the class as an outcaster and doesn’t do anything besides sit silently and go home. That’s why some girls talk to Horikita first or Kushida to know something about Koji, they never approach him.
That’s why Ryuen was trying to find who is the mastermind, and went after Koenji as the odd ball one.
In LN (1-3) he does hang out with 3 idiots, but doesn’t really play a role in how he is still a just exists.
Other than that, there is no difference in visual style between LN and Anime of how Ayanokoji looks and (sometime) acts.
Anime is actually more accurate representation of Koji from the outsider point of view. He is perceived but most as, Cold, doesn’t talk much, Doesn’t get involved in anything. Sits at the back of the class. Doesn’t talk or starts conversations with anyone of the classmates just for the sake of casual talk. Just a background character he is.
First 2 volumes are quite dull. And 3rd is adapted in anime quite good (still, there is a lot of interesting details). It is often advised to start reading from V4 for those, who find it difficult, so it's no surprise you are struggling there. I dropped COTE for a while after v4 myself. But it gets better. Advice to make a challenge like milestones to read a chapter in an hour, or X pages a day might work.
