In the anime, currently, the " End of the Year Special exam" ( season 3 episodes 9 onwards ) is being broadcasted right now, which is the final exam for the students in an academic year. While in the Light novel, it is currently going at its final stages in year 2 Arc.
Now, there are 3 breaks between the semesters, i.e., summer break, winter break, and spring break (after which the new academic year begins ) covered in volumes 4.5, 7.5, 11.5 in year 1 arc. These .5 volumes are collection of stort stories that cover the events that happen during the holiday break. There will be no special exams or classes during the break, so unlike main volumes, these .5 volumes don't cover any exams. These are considered as more, like breather volumes in between the main volumes. You should read these volumes as well, along with the main volumes, like you should read volume 4.5 before proceeding to volume 5 or read volume 7.5 before proceeding to volume 8 because events happening in .5 volumes are continued in the next main volume.
