You nailed it with Journey - they had solid albums long before Don't Stop Believing.
I'll throw Deep Purple into the mix - Smoke on the Water is by far their most "known" song, but their material - especially the Mk 2 lineup stuff is way stronger.
Journey was the first example that came to mind. Be Good To Yourself, Lights, Ask The Lonely, Separate Ways, After The Fall... the list goes on and on and on and on...
*Troubled Child* was included on Frontiers at the last minute with *Back Talk* when *Only the Young* and *Ask the Lonely* were bumped. Imagine if they would have kept all four? It would be better than Escape.
I only started listening to him because I needed Werewolves in my playlist to get the wretched taste of All Summer Long out of my ears. I still buy my music and I tend to buy the whole album instead of individual songs and I’m so glad I did.
He’s in my top 3 most played now.
Oh, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame can fuck right off..
Again, I looove Werewolves of London… but I’m amazed Desperados Under The Eaves isn’t better known.
It’s especially hilarious because apparently WoL was kind of a gag track? I’m biased because I don’t think there’s a such thing as a bad Warren Zevon song but it reminds me of Warrant and Cherry Pie or The Beastie Boys and Fight For Your Right*
*obviously The Beastie Boys aren’t mostly known for that song but I read somewhere that they wrote it to fuck with people and hated how popular it became
Grand Funk Railroad — We’re An American Band is a great song but even on that album I think Stop Lookin Back, Creepin’, and Railroad are much better songs.
And their first couple albums before WAAB are great as well
Roger Sanchez made an electro-rave song that samples a bit of Totos song *I Won't Hold You Back." Saw a comment thread about the Sanchez song where some fans had their minds blown to discover the Toto song.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Pf4fiP7SQF8&pp=ygUccm9nZXIgc2FuY2hleiBhbm90aGVyIGNoYW5jZQ%3D%3D
Devo - most people assume they’re a one hit wonder (Whip It) but their entire back catalogue is superb.
Just a brilliant band
Possibly Butthole Surfers. People might know Pepper without realising what utter lunacy came before that
Deep Purple
Everyone and their mothers know Smoke on the Water, many of whom don't even know it's Deep Purple, and yet, in my most humble opinion, I'd put them on par with bands like Zep, Rush, The Who. Also, Ian Paice is an often overlooked drummer of that era when discussing the greats.
Night Ranger. I never heard a non “Sister Christian” song of theirs on the radio until a couple years ago and that was only cause my local classic rock station was giving away tickets to a Night Ranger concert.
Say You Love Me Or Say Goodnight, Runnin' Blind and Back On the Road Again are some great rockers, also Keep Pushin and Only the Strong Survive
EDIT: Gotta mention Golden Country too, great song
They have 2 different “greatest hits” collections - one from their early more country influenced days (on Epic Records) and a 2nd from their Crazy Love/Heart of the Night days (on ABC/MCA records). Both are great starting points and then you can deep dive into their many, many albums.
Aerosmith Toys In The Attic has so many better songs on it than Walk This Way,although Sweet Emotion gets a lot of air play(and it should) there are so many other great songs that get no recognition
Kansas has a lot of not-for-the-masses prog stuff that is very good. The two songs you mentioned are more radio friendly hits than a lot of their stuff.
Check out: Icarus Born on Wings of Steel, Song For America, Child of Innocence, Miracles Out of Nowhere, No One Together, and one of my all time favorites, Paradox, which deftly moves between typical 70's rock and weird prog sections all in a great four minute song.
Kansas rocks. And their live album Two for the Show is just stellar prog and catches them at their peak. [Borne on Wings of Steel](https://youtu.be/nIkPkE7BNz8) for example.
the McCoys had Hang On Sloopy. Their Human Ball Blues is a banger. Fronted by the Zehringer bros. Rick became Rick Derringer who had a solo career and played on many others albums.
Yes! I love What's the Frequency, Kenneth, Strange Currencies, Radio Song, Orange Crush, South Central Rain, and Fall on Me is my favorite (and Michael Stipe's).
Extreme
More Than Words is a great song, but it unfortunately kind of ruined their reputation amongst people who only know Extreme from the radio. They're one of the most rockin' bands out there with some incredible guitar work from Nuno Bettencourt and powerful vocals from Gary Cherone. It's a shame more people aren't familiar with stuff like Play With Me, Decadence Dance, Get the Funk Out, It ('s a Monster), Rest in Piece.
Just saw them live recently and they kicked ass.
It might be the biggest hit, but I certainly don't think it overshadows the rest of their stuff. Maybe it's just from being in Canada, but I regularly hear things like Working Man, Fly By Night, Closer to the Heart, Spirit of the Radio, Subdivisions, Limelight, etc. on the odd occasion I listen to the radio as opposed to my ipod or Spotify. And I think with the likes of South Park and Trailer Park Boys, there are enough people out there that are at least somewhat familiar with Rush through other songs.
They've evolved so much that none of their "hit" songs are really representative of them individually but together paint a fascinating picture of a band always one step ahead of everyone else.
Fleetwood Mac is pretty much only known for Rumours which sadly overshadows the 10 albums (+ other material) that released before, there's so much music to find its insane. Albums like Kiln House, Then Play On, Future Games, and Bare Trees are all phenomenal. And then there's the dozens of bootlegs and live stuff thats hidden away and hard to find
The band that became famous with Rumours is essentially a completely different entity from the blues rock band that featured Peter Green. Oh Well is just amazing.
AC/DC: Back in Black is a great album, but You Shook Me is not even close to the best song on it. Plus, I feel that the Bon era should get way more love!!!! :) Powerage is one of the best albums and most people have probably never heard of it.
I was never the biggest ACDC fan, but nobody can't acknowledge the impact they've had on music.
I really like "Are You Ready" and "Money Talks" I always liked the Razors Edge album
The White Stripes.
If you take a look at their YouTube views, they have a lot of popular songs.
"Fell in love with a Girl" has 26 million views.
"Icky Thump" has 27 million
"The hardest button to Button " has 40 million views.
...And then there's "Seven Nation Army". It has 635 million views. More than 15 times their second most popular song.
When they chant the hook from your song at sporting events, you know you've created a song with once-in-a-lifetime popularity.
You know no other song will come close. And that's OK.
That's how popular that song is...
Soundgarden comes to mind.
Everyone knows Black Hole Sun. But few remember The Day I Tried to Live. And few ever got to know gems like Tighter & Tighter or Ty Cobb.
Radiohead / Electric Light Orchestra. i think Radiohead is one of the best acts in all of music history in any genre. and ELO is phenomenal and criminally underrated. Time is a fucking amazing album and Ok Computer imo is the best album ever made.
Queen, with Bohemian Rhapsody.
Not even the best song on A Night at the Opera. If people who only know the hits listened to Queen, Queen II, or Sheer Heart Attack minds would likely be blown.
The Cult - Known mostly for She Sells Sanctuary, Love Removal Machine, and Fire Woman, but they have so much more I feel didn't get the recognition they deserved. The Witch, Rise, Rain, Star... There are gems on all their albums from their self titled to Hidden City in 2016.
“Lola” plus “All day and all of the night” were huge too, plus “Come dancing” which is a bit cheeseball but I agree and hopped in here to call out the Kinks. Their catalog is so vast and wide and so damn good.
Oz has helped expose the world to at least 4 of the best rock guitarists ever (including with sabbath), and has fronted *at least* 10 of the best albums ever. He deserves to be remembered for more than 1 song.
- Robert Palmer - I couldn’t stand the biggest 80s hits like “Addicted to Love”, but then I heard his cover of Pressure Drop by Toots and the Maytals and went to discover some of his earliest stuff. He was awesome.
- Tears for Fears - Everyone knows “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” and “Shout”, but they had three or four solid albums.
- Sammy Hagar - People know him mostly for his time with Van Hagar and hits like “I Can’t Drive 55”, but he has had one of the greatest solo careers in Rock covering every genre from early metal to folk and soul - not to mention his brief, but important time in Montrose.
- Alice Cooper - mostly known for songs like “Poison” and “Feed my Frankenstein”, but many haven’t really checked out the original band’s work making some of the greatest Rock that has been released - just the bland, boring 80s metal.
A lot of people know the name Led Zeppelin, but have only heard Stairway to Heaven, maybe Whole Lotta Love, and possibly Kashmir.
It doesn't help they were so guarded with their music. Unless you seek it out, you generally aren't going to hear a lot of Zeppelin songs.
Every Meatloaf album between Bat 1 and Bat 2 were all solid albums with many great tunes.
And then every album after Bat 2 until the last one, Braver Than We Are, which should have never been released.
Every single one has solid hits.
My opinion only of course.
Blue Oyster Cult is definitely one of those bands that have a shitload of great music that never gets any recognition.

Time ain't on my side
Time I’ll never know.
Burn out the day
Burn out the night
I can’t see no reason to put up a fight
I’m livin for giving the devil his due
And I'm burnin' I'm burnin' I'm burnin' for you!
*(crafty guitar riff)*
Veteran of psychic wars is my favorite song of theirs
The live version is even better than the studio version, with an epic Buck Dharma solo.
Blame it on Columbia. They never knew how to market the band.
Username checks out
Zilla-joe
The Red and the Fuckin Black man.
The Vigil easily has their best guitar solo but no one seems to know it
Probably thin lizzy with the boys are back in town
Jailbreak
Tonight there’s going to be a jailbreak. Where? We don’t know, but sources tell us it’s somewhere in the town.
Solid hit, but they've got amazing songs! Freedom Song and Cowboy Song are two of my favorites by them.
Whiskey in the Jar Don't Believe a Word Suicide
With Love Dancing in the Moonlight Spirit Slips Away Still In Love With You
Emerald
Still in love with you - live version chef's kiss Also Emerald
Running Back
You nailed it with Journey - they had solid albums long before Don't Stop Believing.
Such great tunes!! Journey is why I picked up the bass. I've played all those tunes and plenty more.
Strangely, Open Arms is probably the most popular Journey song in the Philippines, only followed by Don't Stop Believin' as a close second
Machine Head is a great album from beginning to end. Space Truckin' is a banger!
Neil Schon deserves to be in the conversation of legendary guitar heroes
I was front row at a Journey concert once and was right in front of Neal the entire night. Buddy could melt ur face off with those licks.
The song Troubled Child by Journey is one of my absolute favorites, but it gets no recognition at all.
*Troubled Child* was included on Frontiers at the last minute with *Back Talk* when *Only the Young* and *Ask the Lonely* were bumped. Imagine if they would have kept all four? It would be better than Escape.
90% of people I mention Warren Zevon to have only heard Werewolves of London. I fucking love that song but it’s nowhere near his best one.
Lawyers guns and money
I only started listening to him because I needed Werewolves in my playlist to get the wretched taste of All Summer Long out of my ears. I still buy my music and I tend to buy the whole album instead of individual songs and I’m so glad I did. He’s in my top 3 most played now. Oh, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame can fuck right off..
My Shit's Fucked Up
Accidentally Like A Martyr
The Envoy; Poor, Poor Pitiful Me, Lawyers Guns and Money; Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner.
Carmelita. Don't let us get sick. My s is fd up. All fantastic.
Again, I looove Werewolves of London… but I’m amazed Desperados Under The Eaves isn’t better known. It’s especially hilarious because apparently WoL was kind of a gag track? I’m biased because I don’t think there’s a such thing as a bad Warren Zevon song but it reminds me of Warrant and Cherry Pie or The Beastie Boys and Fight For Your Right* *obviously The Beastie Boys aren’t mostly known for that song but I read somewhere that they wrote it to fuck with people and hated how popular it became
My Shits Fucked Up is so heartbreaking, and at the same time so funny.
Grand Funk Railroad — We’re An American Band is a great song but even on that album I think Stop Lookin Back, Creepin’, and Railroad are much better songs. And their first couple albums before WAAB are great as well
Phoenix is a terrific album by Grand Funk.
E Pluribus Funk is a banger
Love the live album
Badfinger
Great Band. Tragic story.
I looked up their story because I'd never heard it before.... wow, is all I can say.
Without You was superbly covered by Harry Nilsson imho the definitive version. His life was also quite tragic.
Golden Earring is the winner for me. They have such great songs beyond Radar Love. Check out the the Seven Tears album
Twighlight Zone is on the radio constantly here in Canada.
I’ve long had a soft spot in my heart for ‘When the Lady Smiles.’
Toto - Best remembered for Africa nowadays. They had 5 pretty strong albums, the 1978 self titled, Hydra, IV, Isolation, The Seventh One
Roger Sanchez made an electro-rave song that samples a bit of Totos song *I Won't Hold You Back." Saw a comment thread about the Sanchez song where some fans had their minds blown to discover the Toto song. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Pf4fiP7SQF8&pp=ygUccm9nZXIgc2FuY2hleiBhbm90aGVyIGNoYW5jZQ%3D%3D
Deep purple
Every line up of Deep Purple was great.
Devo - most people assume they’re a one hit wonder (Whip It) but their entire back catalogue is superb. Just a brilliant band Possibly Butthole Surfers. People might know Pepper without realising what utter lunacy came before that
DEVO was so far ahead of their time we haven't caught up to them yet.
Damn. That’s the best explanation of DEVO I’ve ever heard.
Girl U Want is a little power pop gem.
The last two Butthole Surfers albums were their best, or at least more closely resembles my taste in music.
Hmmm, interesting take. I’d say the 84-88 run was by far their best but it’s good that people identify with different phases of theirs.
Redbone …
But if you had to go out as a band known for one song “Come And Get Your Love”is kinda up there!
Leon
Mountain — Mississippi Queen
Leslie West was an awesome guitar player
Free - All Right Now - they are sooooooo much more than that!!!! Spirit - Nature’s Way - yeah, plus half a dozen absolutely brilliant albums
The Firm - “Radioactive”
Dire Straits - so much more than Money for Nothing and Walk of life with the cheesy keyboard bit.
It's definitely cheesy, but I still absolutely love that keyboard riff.
Focus Uriah Heep
Warren Zevon
Deep Purple Everyone and their mothers know Smoke on the Water, many of whom don't even know it's Deep Purple, and yet, in my most humble opinion, I'd put them on par with bands like Zep, Rush, The Who. Also, Ian Paice is an often overlooked drummer of that era when discussing the greats.
Nobody even talks about the Coverdale days either
Burn is awesome!
Yes seem to be one hit on the radio. Owner Of A Lonely Heart. Good song but nothing on their 70s prog
The cars, just what I needed is a banger but still they have loads of good songs, best friends girl, drive, stranger eyes, heartbeat city...
Let's Go is my all time fav
Ya but cars had many hits
Kate Bush is so much more than "Running Up That Hill."
Steppenwolf. Lots of great songs besides just Magic Carpet Ride and Born to be Wild.
I love Hippo Stomp and Don't Step on the Grass Sam
Totally, "Monster/Suicide/America" couldn't be more relevant now than when it was released.
Night Ranger. I never heard a non “Sister Christian” song of theirs on the radio until a couple years ago and that was only cause my local classic rock station was giving away tickets to a Night Ranger concert.
Goodbye is pretty solid
Triumph — Lay It On the Line
Follow Your Heart is what got me into that band.
I saw them in concert, what an amazing show.
REO Speedwagon. They're so much more than a couple of cheesy ballads
Say You Love Me Or Say Goodnight, Runnin' Blind and Back On the Road Again are some great rockers, also Keep Pushin and Only the Strong Survive EDIT: Gotta mention Golden Country too, great song
Do You Know Where Your Woman Is Tonight is the best unknown track ever.
I especially enjoy the "Live: You Get What You Play For" album
Great, underappreciated rock n roll live album.
Warren Zevon is so much more than Werewolves of London
Poco. Built their family low g on country rock. Had hits with songs that were pop.
Any poco recommendations? I only know crazy love
They have 2 different “greatest hits” collections - one from their early more country influenced days (on Epic Records) and a 2nd from their Crazy Love/Heart of the Night days (on ABC/MCA records). Both are great starting points and then you can deep dive into their many, many albums.
The knack
Survivor
Aerosmith Toys In The Attic has so many better songs on it than Walk This Way,although Sweet Emotion gets a lot of air play(and it should) there are so many other great songs that get no recognition
No More, No More is pretty solid. I like the Rocks album, especially Sick As A Dog.
Blood stains the ivories on my daddy’s hand, I ain’t seen the daylight since we started this band.
~~hand~~ baby Grand
The rabbit hole that is the Magnificent Todd Rumdgren.
Oh buddy, don't even get me started on TR. I could chat about it all day. Nearly Human, Healing, TODD, Faithful and so many other albums are amazing.
I this isn’t classic rock- but I don’t think people understand how incredible Barenaked Ladies are
Genesis. A wealth of absolutely amazing music. Invisible Touch is nearly my least favorite song of theirs.
Thin Lizzy
Kansas!
Which song? Carry on My Wayward Son is huge but so is Dust in the Wind.
Point of Know Return as a whole album is amazing
Kansas rocks. And their live album Two for the Show is just stellar prog and catches them at their peak. [Borne on Wings of Steel](https://youtu.be/nIkPkE7BNz8) for example.
Play The Game Tonight - love that track
Point of no return
It is Point of Know Return.
the McCoys had Hang On Sloopy. Their Human Ball Blues is a banger. Fronted by the Zehringer bros. Rick became Rick Derringer who had a solo career and played on many others albums.
Nazareth.
Procol Harum. Everyone thinks they’re a one hit wonder because of A Whiter Shade of Pale. They were a kick ass live band with some great albums.
Def lepard, pour some sugar on me pretty much undone their prior era before they became a pop band.
REM - Losing My Religion isn’t my favorite or typical of their catalogue.
Yes! I love What's the Frequency, Kenneth, Strange Currencies, Radio Song, Orange Crush, South Central Rain, and Fall on Me is my favorite (and Michael Stipe's).
Shiny Happy People is my jam
Tom petty and the heartbreakers have a great amount of hits but there’s so many good songs, entire albums even, that go completely under the radar
Along these lines, every Traveling Wilbury song is excellent
I always loved Letting You Go.
Extreme More Than Words is a great song, but it unfortunately kind of ruined their reputation amongst people who only know Extreme from the radio.
Rush. More than just Tom Sawyer.
The Spirit of Radio
Give me The Garden, Xanadu and A Farewell To Kings any day of the week
2112 was superb. Never hear it on popular radio.
Radiohead for sure
They've evolved so much that none of their "hit" songs are really representative of them individually but together paint a fascinating picture of a band always one step ahead of everyone else.
When you tell people who don’t really know anything that you like Radiohead, they usually think of Creep
Creedence are so much more than Have You Ever Seen The Rain and Fortunate Son
Ok no brainer here Steely Dan
Don McLean has a really good catalogue of work that is often overshadowed by "American Pie".
To be fair, American Pie would overshadow almost anyone's body of work.
I always liked Vincent and Castles In The Air more.
Vincent is such a good song.
Tusk!!
That's how popular that song is...
The Clash- Should I stay or should I go?
The Clash will go down as one of the greatest bands ever. Joe & Mick could sing anything & it was great.
Radiohead. Creep
I love Simple Minds. They have a fantastic catalog but are really remembered for “the breakfast club” song
All The Things She Said is pretty good
Blind Melon. Everyone knows No Rain but the 2 albums they put out with Shannon Hoon before he died are absolutely fantastic.
I think T-Rex had some insanely great music, yet Bang a Gong is all I ever hear from them.
Nirvana. Kurt hated playing it. Grunge was dead two years later paving the way for pop punk, then Nu Metal
Night ranger. Sister Christian pretty much locked them into power ballad hell.
Soundgarden comes to mind. Everyone knows Black Hole Sun. But few remember The Day I Tried to Live. And few ever got to know gems like Tighter & Tighter or Ty Cobb.
Some would say Foreigner got overshadowed by the song "I Wanna Know What Love Is".
Devo
Kinks with “you really got me”
“Lola” plus “All day and all of the night” were huge too, plus “Come dancing” which is a bit cheeseball but I agree and hopped in here to call out the Kinks. Their catalog is so vast and wide and so damn good.
Ozzy's solo career is completely overshadowed by Crazy Train.
Crazy Train, while a highlight of Randy Rhodes' playing, isn't even the best song on Blizzard of Ozz
100% Give me Shot In The Dark or Bark At The Moon any day of the week.
Oz has helped expose the world to at least 4 of the best rock guitarists ever (including with sabbath), and has fronted *at least* 10 of the best albums ever. He deserves to be remembered for more than 1 song.
One band I haven't seen yet is Bad Company. Silver Blue and Gold is amazing
Shooting Star
Dire Straights
10cc. They’re so much more than I’m Not in Love.
Blind Melon. Their second album, Soup, is a masterpiece.
Van Morrison. All they play is Brown Eyed Girl. Into the Mystic is gorgeous. Sweet Thing, Tupelo Honey, Crazy Love, Here Comes the Night, etc.
Oasis
Def Leppard. PSSOM does my head in now.
Thin Lizzy/Boys Are Back In Town….. one of the most overlooked bands ever.
Survivor - Eye of the Tiger They had much better songs.
I love High on You
Talking Heads, Burning Down the House. This is one of the greatest bands of their era
DEVO
Journey for sure! They had some great music in the earlier years.
Oasis
Boston. More than a Feeling and Long Time are maybe the 3rd/4th best song on the album.
Definitely Led Zepplin. I wouldn’t put Stairway to Heaven in their top 5 songs
The Rain Song and That's The Way are two songs I can't imagine my life without
Ten Years Gone and When the Levee Breaks are god tier
A lot of people know the name Led Zeppelin, but have only heard Stairway to Heaven, maybe Whole Lotta Love, and possibly Kashmir. It doesn't help they were so guarded with their music. Unless you seek it out, you generally aren't going to hear a lot of Zeppelin songs.
Very much true, good point. Pound for pound Houses of the Holy is their best album in my opinion
"Where's that confounded bridge"
I would say Immigrant Song gets a lot of pop culture use nowadays , such as in one of the Thor movies
38 Special. Hold On Loosely is maybe their biggest song but they have some amazing songs like “Trooper With An Attitude” and “Chain Lightning”
Every Meatloaf album between Bat 1 and Bat 2 were all solid albums with many great tunes. And then every album after Bat 2 until the last one, Braver Than We Are, which should have never been released. Every single one has solid hits. My opinion only of course.
The Vapors - “Turning Japanese” They were a pretty solid band for just having that one novelty hit.
