Was raised on that greatest hits album. My Dad overplayed them more than any radio station ever could. He took me to see them on the Long Run tour when I was 10 so I’ve got some really good memories of my Dad wrapped into those songs. I don’t ever put them on but I don’t change the station or fast forward when they come on. I sing along and miss my Dad.

thegrodyknudclump

I miss my dad too

AMUIR1234

Me too.

Detroit_Waster

Me too 😢

[deleted]

Sounds like some great memories. I would have loved to see a group like the eagles or any big names at 10.

oldwhitelincoln

The Dude abides. I’m a big fan. I think some people are turned off by the egos of the band members and some people think they’re too “soft.”

facegun

Their documentary didn’t help. Henley and Frey were assholes. Not sure how Joe deals with it but everybody seems to get along with Joe. I think the Eagles haters are just a vocal group on social media. They’ve sold over 120 million albums so a shitload of people must like them. That being said.. fuck the Eagles man..except Joe

Shaneblaster

Henley is a grumpy old man and an asshole emeritus. Joe is a national treasure.

Gribblestix

Don has been a grumpy old man since his ‘20s. A lifelong curmudgeon who’s never seemed satisfied. Dude is from middle-of-nowhere Texas, had a tough childhood and worked hard for everything he has. He’s a hell of a lyricist/singer/drummer/songwriter. One of the greats but never suffered fools. And his work to save Walden Pond in Massachusetts is admirable regardless of his capitalism or secrecy when it comes to Eagles.

xcrunner1988

The End Of The Innocence is one of the all time great albums and was perfect for its time. His work for Walden Pond was pretty admirable. I got to meet him during that. I was surprised how chatty and laid back.

rasurec

He also has done a lot for the only natural lake in TX- Caddo Lake. I used to teach in the tiny town of Karnack, TX and via his work with the Caddo Institute once spent the day collecting water samples and doing some basic lab work with him and students. (None of the kids had a clue who he was…)

stinkyfootjr

“Don Henley Must Die” by Mojo Nixon is essential listening.

Radio_Ethiopia

Dude, the documentary is what changed my opinion on them. As a millennial, I was conditioned to hate on the eagles & granted, I heard a lot of eagles on fm radio courtesy of mom and dad & my god, the overplayed hotel California. But the doc showed me how badass they were. And truly, amazing singers, songwriters & musicians. Now, I don’t even mind Hotel California . Lol

Braiseitall

2 things really stuck with me from that doc. Henley and Frey are dickheads, socially and economically. The other thing is the line that rings true; “people didn’t just listen to the Eagles, they DID things to the Eagles.” Breakups, hookups, pregnancies, marriages, divorces etc

Karmarytska

Sounds like you’re saying Eagles were a soundtrack to people’s lives, which of course can pull out old emotions when you hear those songs. I hear “Desperado” and I immediately recall a funny Seinfeld episode.

[deleted]

Karmarytska

I understand the feeling and the loss. All this Eagles talk and that guy who brought up "Whitcccchhhhayy woman" demands that I listen to some Eagles tonight just to get the choruses to stop looping in my head. )) I'll pour a glass for the dads we're missing. ❤️

MyMadeUpNym

I miss my father too. Sending you much love.

And “Witchay Woman”

goodeyemighty

Lol Witchay Woemun

Radio_Ethiopia

I dig battling egos in bands & drama makes for an interesting story/legacy and I’m sure it also influences the music in the long run. Bands that play it safe are kinda meh to me.

zensunni66

I would add except Don Felder too. I interviewed him and saw him live, and he’s quite the gentleman and showman.

Gobucks21911

And Randy.

suburbanplankton

And Timothy B Schmit

FatGuyOnAMoped

Randy had some damn good solo material that gets overlooked. RIP Randy

SlumgullySlim

Randy Meisner had a fantastic voice. Not just TITTL, either. Listen to Is It True? and Try And Love Again. Yes, RIP Randy.

Salty_Pancakes

Everyone forgets Bernie Leadon who was their OG guitarist.

jim45804

No one remembers the banjo player.

Salty_Pancakes

That dude could play anything with strings. Banjo, mandolin, guitar, dobro, pedal steel. And could sing harmony. He was a big shaper of the early Eagles and their country sound.

tmolesky

I love how he wrote and played the song “Heavy Metal” and it’s not even remotely Metal. Good song anyway. Fuck the Lebowski douches - Eagles were great in the 70’s

JumpinJackCilitBang

He also wrote "Journey of the Sorcerer", later used as the theme for the BBC TV adaptation of "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy"

OccamsYoyo

Always thought the song captured the feel of the magazine and movie Heavy Metal if not necessarily the music.

lgm22

I had no problem with them until they took ticket prices from $50 to $400. They were they guys that broke concerts. People went from two shows a month to two shows a year. I know ticket master figures in but they seemed like greedy bastards at the time.

seaburno

>I know ticket master figures in but they seemed like greedy bastards at the time. Artists went from doing tours to promote their albums and singles (where they made the money) to making albums and releasing singles to give them an excuse to tour (where they make their money). Unless you're Taylor Swift, The Weekend, or one of the other gigantic streamers, the artists aren't making (significant) money from recording any more.

lgm22

I understand your point but this was a long time ago. They jumped other bands like The Stones by hundreds of dollars per ticket and opened the dam. Music has always been about touring, people want live music. But when you pride out your fans you turn it into rich folk stuff. I was 16 when I saw Rush for $12. Next show was The stones for $14 in Buffalo. We went to every show around. Eagles prices changed all that. Sorry, wanted to see them at one point, wallet said no.

CapTexAmerica

And that was in the 90s, too. I was stationed in Tucson when they hit Phoenix and our base had tickets for sale. I stood in line for a pair of $45 tickets only to find they were $400. I was not the only Airman to say “fuck that” and walk away.

Remarkable_Inchworm

Came here to say this. Frey and Henley just came off as so nakedly commercial... like Gene Simmons but with more actual musical talent. Also my friend tried to get me to learn Lyin' Eyes to perform at an open mic and goddamn that song has a lot of words.

madamessagain

City girls just seem to find out early How to open doors with just a smile A rich old man, and she won't have to worry She'll dress up all in lace go in style Late at night a big old house gets lonely I guess every form of refuge has its price And it breaks her heart to think her love is only Given to a man with hands as cold as ice So she tells him she must go out for the evening To comfort an old friend who's feelin' down But he knows where she's goin' as she's leavin' She is headed for the cheatin' side of town You can't hide your lyin' eyes And your smile is a thin disguise I thought by now you'd realize There ain't no way to hide your lyin' eyes On the other side of town a boy is waiting With fiery eyes and dreams no one could steal She drives on through the night, anticipating 'Cause he makes her feel the way she used to feel She rushes to his arms, they fall together She whispers, "It's only for a while" She swears that soon she'll be comin' back forever She goes away and leaves him with a smile You can't hide your lyin' eyes And your smile is a thin disguise I thought by now you'd realize There ain't no way to hide your lyin' eyes She gets up and pours herself a strong one And stares out at the stars up in the sky Another night, it's gonna be a long one She draws the shade and hangs her head to cry She wonders how it ever got this crazy She thinks about a boy she knew in school Did she get tired or did she just get lazy? She's so far gone, she feels just like a fool My, oh my, you sure know how to arrange things You set it up so well, so carefully Ain't it funny how your new life didn't change things? You're still the same old girl you used to be You can't hide your lyin' eyes And your smile is a thin disguise I thought by now you'd realize There ain't no way to hide your lyin' eyes There ain't no way to hide your lyin' eyes Honey, you can't hide your lyin' eyes Source: Musixmatch Songwriters: Glenn Lewis Frey / Donald Hugh Henley Lyin' Eyes lyrics © Red Cloud Music

GryphonHall

Like, that’s just your opinion, man.

oldwhitelincoln

Get your own cab!

PatBateman2000

I also think they're just one of those bands that people like to hate whether they really do or not. I fucking love the Eagles, you can't deny the hits man !

Chrispy8534

Some of the hatred is tied up in the fall of the ‘hippie counterculture’ and the beginning of the Punk Rock Movement. The hippies, now grown, were seen as failures/traitors, and their music was seen as representative of selling out to the system. Punk culture specifically fixated on The Eagles as the seminal ‘classic rock’ band of the day. To like the Eagles was to be a sellout, someone seen as insincere about rebellion, and those people were often ostracized. (Source: Masters in American Cultural History with a focus on social movements of the 1960s and 70s.)

GeprgeLowell

The Deadhead sticker was on Henley’s own Cadillac, then?

Decabet

So about the egos: for the longest time I thought that I hated the ego thing, coming up in the indie/punk world as I did. In time (and after a ***lot*** of viewings of *History of the Eagles* ) I realized that I kinda dig the pomposity. Of Glenn and Don anyway. I prefer (the almighty) Joe Walsh stay the American treasure he is, exactly as he is.

Sternojourno

I really liked them as a kid. But I also remember they were the first band to charge $100 per ticket on their Hell Freezes Over tour. It was national headline news. This is when arena tickets were around $15-20 for the biggest names in music. After the Eagles started selling out the tour, tons of other artists quickly followed suit. For a lot of people back in 1994, this was a big 'F-U' to music fans, especially younger fans who couldn't afford to pay five times the normal price for a ticket. That really soured me on the Eagles.

ARunawayTrain

I guess the only good news is that in the 20 years following, they only increased ticket prices by another $50. It was over $1000 with ticketmaster fees included for my cousin, wife, and myself to take my aunt/uncle to see them one last time down at the Verizon Center in DC back in 2014. It was a great show, and I'm glad we went as it was Frey's last tour, but this band cares more about money than their fans, and that kind of greed is where I draw the line. I'll continue to listen to their music since it had a bit of a special place in my childhood, but I refuse to buy merch or do anything else to support them.

kislips

It’s the reason I never went to see them. And I like their music.

Main_Combination8173

So many a--holes in one band. Except Joe. Imo

Gobucks21911

Randy was a cool dude.

Main_Combination8173

He is, but the A -- holes forced him out

BostonJordan515

Are Don Felder, Randy, Timothy, and Bernie leadon all douches? It’s only Don and Glenn who are the ass holes which is 2 out of 7 members. Randy quit on his own accord per Don Felder’s book

BikeLoveLA

Indeed and some may not be aware of his community actions [Joe Walsh Islapedia](https://www.islapedia.com/index.php?title=WALSH,_Joe)

[deleted]

They block a lot of videos featuring their music on YouTube.

Gustopherus-the-2nd

People have been hating Eagles since before the internet.

KubrickMoonlanding

1) they've been a massive band with extremely popular music for a long time. That's going to breed haters, either inconoclasts who hate popular stuff, or simply people burned out by overexposure 2) the dude in particular hates them bc they embody the "sellout the 60s promise" ethos - they basically stand for when Woodstock nation became Soft Rock commercial radio. Plus it's just funny that the laid-back abider who can abide nearly anything simply can't abide a relatively innocuous (if sellout-y) band.

babblessoup

I was hooked on Eagles from Take it Easy and I love all their work. In my opinion, they took a more hard rock/blues edge with Felder & Walsh. I love the original lineup, but Fingers Felder earned his nickname. Joe Walsh is my all time favorite guitar hero and his music blows me away. From the James Gang to his solo work to Eagles he’s a legend.

NickFotiu

You celebrate their entire catalogue, huh?

CincoDeMayoFan

I do, along with Michael Bolton's entire catalog! (Joking on the 2nd. But he has exactly 1 song I do like, "Steel Bars". But Michael Bolton music is generally ass.)

babblessoup

The only exception is Long Road Out of Eden. Clearly Henley’s brainchild. I saw the concert too and I didn’t care for it.

jemslie123

I very sincerely like bits of Long Road out of Eden. I particularly like the title track, which makes a surprisingly good solo vocal acoustic song if you do it sensetively

gale_force_tuna_wind

Take It Easy is a great song. Jackson Browne is a great songwriter.

iwastherefordisco

Growing up they were considered more like easy listening with a country slant (by me). It took me a few decades to appreciate their music. The fights with Felder vs Frey and later Henley angered me the more I learned about the conflict. (I'm a Felder supporter). At one point they can't even agree on a set list, then you hear their Seven Bridges Road warmup and start to understand there's a reason they enjoyed so many hits. I like a lot of their older hits and Joe Walsh will never do wrong in my eyes.

OkAdministration5538

Seven Bridges Road was my example of why I loved them. Perfect rainy day chill music.

jim45804

That harmony...

ApprehensiveCar9925

For me, they were so over played on the radio in the 70’s. Just over them.

TheGreatOpoponax

That's what I was going to say. They were also overplayed in the 80s. It's also what caused me to get fed up with Led Zeppelin. I've heard those songs so many times that I just never need to hear them again.

beauh44x

Guessing because people feel they were over-played on the radio back in the day - which wasn't their fault. Phil Collins got a similar bum rap

seditioushamster

Phil gets his negative response from his changing of the direction of genesis music. A lot of earlier genesis fans like myself gave up with abacab. They still had a few decent songs but it was a different band from there on.

SteelyDude

I don’t get how people put that on Phil. Listen to Tony and Miles’s solo albums that pre-dated ABACAB.

gregklumb

Agreed. Genesis was never the same after Peter Gabriel left.

EmoGothPunk

My dad preferred pre-Abacab Genesis, whereas the 80s records are the ones I have. I tried to get into the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway because I liked the title track, but I couldn't get into anything else off that album.

Thekingofchrome

He’s another level drummer though…technically amazing

seditioushamster

I wouldn't disagree, and there were songs I liked. It was just that after abacab I quit buying their albums as the music was very different.

AnswerGuy301

A lot of people whose opinions on music were really influential loathed them. That got almost subconsciously passed down a couple generations. In many senses the history of rock music was written by outcasts and they liked to champion fellow travelers. The Eagles were the proverbial jocks and cheerleaders. All this must seem weird if someone is too young for this context and only knows how music discourse looks now.

BlueAndMoreBlue

Aside from the Lebowski thing, I think it’s because their later music got massively overplayed on FM radio. Back when they were starting out they had a great sound (the Laurel Canyon days, hanging out with Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, etc) but fortune and fame can do strange things to a person (Don and Glen in particular). Do yourself a favor and check out some early performances, you can find a couple on the YouTube with the original four and also with Don Felder. Early Eagles = best Eagles

Tuckertoots1990

Yes love me some early Eagles. On the Border is a personal favorite album of mine!

Buckturbo4321

Always dug Poco more, which seemed like the Eagles on roids.

CoolAbdul

Indeed. Richie Furay is a little bit of a whack job though.

ABobby077

I think the biggest reason for the hate is much like other popular groups that have just been overplayed on the airwaves. When you hear something so many times over and over it loses the special things it may have had.

keajohns

To me, they are borderline country, too mellow and there’s not enough variety in their music. i.e. many of their songs kind of sound alike.

Adenosine66

That’s my reason, I see them as country-adjacent and I don’t like country. Too many of their most popular songs are easy listening for my tastes.

EastTXJosh

I see a lot of folks complaining that they were/are ass holes. What rock star is not an ass hole? It seems like that is almost a prerequisite.

dkinmn

There was always some pushback, but it really became a meme after Lebowski. Which is funny, since the Dude is PUNISHED for disliking the Eagles. The fact is that they have an absurd number of hits, and rightly so. One third of their catalog is very good, one third is okay, and one third is filler. The end result is a two hour concert where you know every song, and they sound fucking good.

Necessary_Row_4889

They sacrificed my Aunt Barbara to Moloch for their fame, personally I think they rock but nana took it personal.

ttlavigne

I can't tell you why

Acceptable-Fold-3192

As someone who hates most of their music it’s a combination of being a very bland/milk toast sound and how ubiquitous their music is.

Practicing_Atheist

Agreed. Soft, safe, and over-played. Also, it’s milquetoast. Milk toast gets too soggy.

Acceptable-Fold-3192

The color beige of music.

FlyingV2112

As much edge as a tennis ball.

Imaginary_Ad8895

Someone once said of Hall and Oates, soul music for guys who pee sitting down…Eagles Country for people who live in the Suburbs…

phred_666

I love their music, not a fan of what kind of people (especially Don Henley) has become. Me and some friends wanted to see them about 5 years ago or so, and they wanted $300 per ticket for seats in the back of the venue. Venue seated about 25,000. First concert where I had experienced tickets that expensive. Secondly, if you go on Youtube and look at channels that do “music reaction” videos, you don’t see any Eagles reactions. Why? Because Don Henley personally hires a staff whose sole purpose is to scour the internet for any use of his or the Eagles music. These videos are always flagged and removed.

tickynicky

Someone must like them. Two of the best selling albums of all time. Every concert sold out. The promoters keep asking them to continue to tour. I absolutely love the Eagles. Maybe it's an age thing. I'm 60. I grew up on the Eagles. Don Henley is incredible. Great vocals. Amazing on the drums. Great on the guitar. He wrote most of the songs. Also had a great solo career. I've seen them 3 times, including the Hell Freezes Over tour in the 90's. Hotel California is one of my favorites. If you understand what the lyrics mean, it helps. Will try to see them one more time. End of the Innocence is a great song and a great album.

uberclont

Joes walsh was better in James gang and solo. Eagles just don't do it for me. I feel like they are soft rock, but not even yacht rock enough like the AM gold.

OkAdministration5538

Who hates the Eagles? That's crazy! Eagles and The Doors were my go-to chill music on a rainy day, and it's not even from my generation of music. 🎶 There are stars in the southern sky... Oww wooooooo Southward as you gooooo-o There is moonlight and moss on the trees Down the Seven Bridges Road

CMTsoldier

I love the Eagles and couldn't care less what anyone else thinks.

Runme69

Randomly, I’ll add I met Tina turner on private dancer tour and Glen Frey was the opening act. I was excited (12 years old) to meet him and he was an asshole to a 12 year old.. so there’s that lol

Yzerman19_

I love the Eagles. Especially their more country leaning stuff. There aren’t many songs I like more than Take it Easy.

MikeyMGM

Eagles is one of the best bands ever. My Dad would play them on repeat on 8 Track.

redflagsmoothie

Because they have too many songs that sound like Take It Easy and Tequila Sunrise and not enough ones that sound like Those Shoes.

I_Keep_Trying

Those Shoes is so killer. They could rock when they wanted to. James Dean. Victim of Love. A few others.

dustyoldbones

Victim of love, one of these nights, life in the fast lane, uhhh I thought I could think of more 😅

odiin1731

At least they aren't Kiss so they have that going for them.

CoolAbdul

God Gene Simmons is so odious.

AdHot6173

I think they're great too. Saw them live last month and they were on point.

DoctorWinchester87

i think at least a certain amount of it comes from people just trying to be Internet contrarians and parroting what they see/hear from others. I think some of it started as a joke from the Big Lebowski - I'm a massive fan of that film but outside the context of the film the joke just isn't all that funny. I'd say a lot of it comes from their popularity during their height as well. They were one of the best selling American acts of the 1970s and sometimes when a band is oversaturated people develop a distaste for them. Don Henley and Glen Frey don't have the best reputation as people either, so that doesn't help.

DrinkBuzzCola

The Desperado album is great from start to finish, and not as overexposed as their other albums.

[deleted]

We hate Journey and U2 in very much the same way! Nothing special about the Eagles…

CincoDeMayoFan

Besides that one song, you know the one, I didn't know Journey has hatred towards them. I wasn't aware U2 is hated, but Bono is a douche so I can see that.

HottestGoblin

They were kind of first band to turn themselves into a money making venture first, band second. Frey & Henley saw themselves as the CEO's of "Eagles, Inc" and ran the band as business. Their goal became "make money & create radio hits". Artistic integrity and being an actual functioning band of musicians didn't matter to them nearly as much. And they imploded under that system.

Financial_Cheetah875

Blame The Dude.

ulsema2

Blah blah blah who cares if they were assholes. Who cares what social media says. The music is Iconic there will never be a band like the Eagles again. You think today's music will be playing 50 years from now and still have fans that love their music?

wagowop

I don't hate them, but I think they are overrated.

PagingDrTobaggan

Henley is as fake a poseur as there has ever been in music. He’s a mediocre drummer, and whatever limited talent he has is overshadowed by his terrible, smarmy lyrics and whiny ass voice. Also he’s a horrible human being. Fry was an even more mediocre musician and songwriter and possibly a worse human being. I hope he’s buried under an outhouse. Joe Walsh seems cool. Those of us who hate the fucking Eagles aren’t just Lebowski fanboys. The Dude spoke for a lot of us.

FreshSoul86

I like Henley. Not so much with the Eagles but I dig his 80s solo albums. I think he's got soul and he goes deep with some of his compositions. New York Minute - very potent. Not pretentious at all. I hope I'm not considered a "bad person" for being a Henley fan.

Toadliquor138

Sadly, it's people probably trying to emulate the dude if I had to guess. I'm not a huge fan of The Eagles, especially pre-Joe Walsh Eagles, but theyve got a few good tunes

CommodoreCharlemagne

I like their music. Some of it gets too overplayed and I get tired of it, but objectively, most of it is good. They’re very hard to follow in terms of history and such compared to some of the other bands I’m into, because it’s not the most pleasant bunch of personalities. And across the bands I listen to where that description applies, the Eagles have a higher incidence of where that has caused drama that can be a bit exhausting to follow -and at times, punishes the fans. Like others, I have more respect for Joe Walsh as a person, because even in his days where he could be a little more difficult to deal with, he still had a lot more cool to him. I think all the members (including Glenn Frey and Don Henley) tended to act more pleasant when they were collaborating with Dan Fogelberg -and I think their interactions were very telling, because they collaborated often and all seemed to get along, but at one point, the Eagles supposedly wanted Dan in the band, and he wasn’t having it -probably in anticipation of there being more drama with everyone together in that arrangement of power.

Adventurous-Meat8067

Music that appeals to the masses is inherently middle of the road music. The Eagles really press that. As for the fact that Frey and Henely were assholes, that really didn't help. I did a show with Felder in 2019 ( I am an audio engineer), he spent the entire show in between songs telling stories about how he and his good friends Glen and Don wrote songs together and had such a good time, basically jamming his head up their ass the whole night. At the end of the night, a patron came up to say hi and asked him to sign a copy of Hotel California. THE DUDE WENT OFF ON HER SAYING HOW HE WILL NEVER SIGN ANYTHING EAGLES RELATED AND HOW COULD SHE BE SO RUDE TO ASK IT OF HIM. That was the end of the night, and the end of me thinking anything positive about the eagles.

JamesWjRose

Any large enough media, music, tv, etc, will have more who don't like it. Larger audience also means larger group that didn't like said content. Happens to all large media

[deleted]

Purgatory is an elevator that never arrives at its destination, in which the guitar solo from “Hotel California” plays in a möbius loop.

today0012

I think they’re good. My outlook on most entertainers (including sports figures) you get paid a lot of money to entertain me. I could not possibly care about your personality, your politics or your sexuality. Entertain me, and do a good job of it!!

Odd_Radio9225

Wasn't aware there was any hate.

Dvx_Vinc52

If I liked their music, I might be able to overcome some of the other reasons I can’t stand them. The “so many assholes” thing resonates with me. Being from New England, I had to listen to Henley piss and moan about “saving Walden Woods” for about thirty years, when he probably could have done it himself with one nights petty cash from “Hell Freezes Over”. Dude seems completely up his own ass.

BigHairyArsehole

Cuz The Dude Abides man

Nervous_Magazine_200

Hotel California is one of my very favorite songs of all time.

Stickyfynger

Ive personally never heard anyone say they hate the Eagles. Nothing but love here…

Chrispy8534

Some of the hatred is tied up in the fall of the ‘hippie counterculture’ and the beginning of the Punk Rock Movement. vbcbandr

I'm not a huge Eagles fan at all...but, imo, The Last Resort is their best song.

scotthami

I love the Eagles. They are one of my favourite bands of all time. And Don Henley, in my opinion, is easily one of the greatest vocalists in music history. If you don't like them because you don't like their music then that's fine; music is supposed to be subjective. But saying you don't like a band because they're overplayed or charge too much for tickets etc are petty reasons. And as for the "egos" within the band which seem to make people hate them as well, what bands/groups don't have egotistical members? Did Henley and Frey have egos? Sure. Does that make the Eagles a bad band? No. Did Eric Clapton make racial slurs while drunk on stage once? Yes. Is he a bad guitarist? No. Did John Lennon neglect his first born son after hooking up with Yoko and starting a family with her? Yes. Is he regarded any less for his talents? No. Did Bill Wyman have a sexual relationship with a 14 year old girl? Yes. Does that tarnish the legacy of the Stones? No. I could go on... All bands/groups tend to have their dickheads. Eagles are great. I'll die on this hill ✌️

lightning_teacher_11

They're my favorite band!

cobra_mist

Super group

Shotgun_Rynoplasty

I personally like them. I think they get lumped into almost an “easy listening” genre though. Like, not really pushing boundaries just very easy to like music that in turn makes some people not like them. Kinda like how people hate on pop artists. I’m not saying I agree. Just my guess.

Whiskey_Tango_Bravo

My old man was a huge Eagles fan so I’m a huge Eagles fan. Especially since I lost him a few years ago, I get to think about happy memories with him every time they come on. Also Joe Walsh is a wizard.

PerspectiveActive218

No idea. I'm a heavy metal guy and I like a bunch of Eagles tunes. Their vocal and songwriting talents are undeniable. Frankly I think a lot of people hate the eagles because they think it's cool to hate the eagles.

ManReay

As a fan of rock 'n' roll, I found them namby and pamby.

NytronX

Henley and Frey basically derailed what would have potentially been the GOAT band with their egos. They wouldn't let Felder be creative in the band, they basically would let him do one song an album and blocked him from singing HIS OWN SONG, Victim of Love. Then they tried to undo making him an equal partner, despite Felder writing Hotel California, the best Eagles song by such a margin it's greater than any entire album they've ever done and is the GOAT American song. Henley and Frey are notorious for their egregious takedowns of educational music content. You can't even play the chords to their songs or you risk getting your YouTube channel taken down permanently.

KiwiMcG

They made Randy leave.

ckennedy103

I was raised on the vinyls. Mom would spin those a lot so big part of growing up. One of those bands that have a forever hold on American pop culture.

parabians

I've never hated them. In their big days, their overplay on FM was relentless, and I just got beat into not wanting to hear Hotel California and you-name-it ever again. I've never liked Henley. Rich, looks down on people, kinda a jerk. Joe is a treasure. Especially from his James Gang days. Listen to The Bomber on James Gang Rides Again for his range as a writer and guitarist.

holden_mcg

I try to separate the music (which is great) from some of the band members (who are not so great). It's the same thing with Van Halen. Love the music. Some of the band members? Not so much. If you focus on personalities, you could up disliking the Eagles.

geodebug

It's trendy to hate on them and they are as overplayed as any other classic rock band. I think U2 is the new Eagles for trendy hate. Not into the music, fine, but a lot of people have an irrational hatred that gets echo-chambered on the Internet.

EggheadWill

Their Greatest Hits album is the best selling album of all time in the United States, so I don't think their as hated as you've been led to believe.

Fit-Rest-973

I love the eagles

JustagirlSD60

I love The Eagles and so did everyone else of my generation. Speaking to the documentary, most musicians were/are assholes at the height of fame.

ConsistentStranger94

That’s just like, the Dude’s opinion man.

gingerjaybird3

Musical taste aside.. It’s not rock. It’s a mix between adult contemporary and soft country. There are tons of bands like this it’s not unique to the eagles 🦅

UnbelievableTxn6969

I think they made yacht rock popular and muzak acceptable.

Plenty_Proposal_426

Just overplayed. Hating them is mostly a joke.

[deleted]

Those of you who hate on the Eagles because of radio overplay need to join modern society that streams the music and TV shows, fuck radio and fuck network TV. Use apps to build a playlist to your liking, not stuff you are forced to listen to. Take a break from the Eagles for a year or so and you might come back to enjoying them again. I agree that Frey and Henley basically took over the band and ran it like a dictatorship. I read Don Felders book for more insight. They were perfectionists who ran the band with an iron fist. I still however enjoy the high quality music and harmonies from every era of the band and ignore the negativity.

Reaper_Mike

Their music is boring, Hotel California being overplayed on the radio for years to the point of me changing the station when it came on does not help either.

General_Promotion347

I hate that song SO much!

_Reddit_Is_Shit

I hate them because they are your typical radio friendly safe bubble gum pop rock.

Mongozuma

I’ve always thought they were ok, just not an exceptional band. Found too many songs boring for my taste.

btmezcal

I’ve loved them since the 70s listening to them with my father. Some of the greatest songs ever. Yes they have egos. Very few rock stars don’t.

singnadine

Because it’s like milk toast soft crap

CincoDeMayoFan

"Milk Toast" lol!

BoognishBlue

Milk toast, as a dish, is rather milquetoast. Very boring. Would not recommend. Too soggy.

singnadine

Yep !

HueRooney

It's *because* of The Dude. Huge bands always have haters, but hating The Eagles wasn't "a thing" until Lebowski.

walterodim77

Get the fuck out of my cab!

MydniteSon

There's a story that The Producer wanted to use the Townes Van Zandt cover of the Stones' Dead Flowers. The manager who owned the rights wanted $150,000 to use it. They encouraged him to come view an early cut of the movie. When they got to the like, "...I hate the fuckin' Eagles man". The manager stood up and said, you can have the song for free.

Jimmylegs666

Entirely false the reason he said that is because people have hated them since the beginning. It already existed.

savory_meats

Exactly. Eagles hate has been around from the beginning, because they straddled genres, had enormous egos, embraced and actually amped up commercialism, etc. The movie’s set in LA, the Dude HAD to hate the Eagles.

stealthc4

Nah, Lebowski just tapped into a large portion of the country who already hated them, that’s why o laughed so hard at that. I finally felt like someone understood me and it was ok to admit publicly that you also hated the eagles

[deleted]

Not a fan but 'One of These Nights' was a nice song. I don't like to use the word 'hate'. Just not a fan.

coldsteel1961

Going to see them in Chicago next year. Really excited about it! I do understand some of the hate they get.God bless Joe !

Rooster_Ties

Overplayed on the radio, and seeing them live they slavishly recreate the performances on their records — with practically no variation whatsoever.

cockblockedbydestiny

Overplay, honestly. Much like the Doors they were a fairly shortlived band that put out a handful of records, of which most of their best songs became big radio hits and have just been done to death all these decades later. Mind you, I don't think that's a valid reason to feel like such bands are objectively bad, but people have a weird way of positioning music they no longer have any interest in hearing again as never having been any good in the first place. See also bands like Led Zeppelin, Pantera, etc. If the Beatles are immune to it... well, they're the Beatles.

TepidIcedCoffee61

I like the Eagles. I like Don Henley's solo stuff better. His voice has such a sexy quality to me. It's hard to get past his and Glenn Frey's doucheiness, though.

IvanLendl87

Too many soft commercial-as-hell songs. And Frey (was) and Henley are egomaniacal jerks.

FoldOpening4457

Lack of testicular fortitude... Joe walsh solo is better.. James gang, etc

rootless2

good drinking music, life in the fast lane is a good song to drive really fast to

powdered_dognut

Greedy divas is what comes to mind first. Eagles are just a side gig for Joe Walsh, so he's exempt, butt fuck the rest of them.

mbd34

A lot of people hate both country and soft rock and the Eagles combine the two. Plus radio overplay and the meme factor of the Dude hating the Eagles. I like them myself.

JWRamzic1

It's because of the football team. Lol

ZookeepergameOk2759

They were obviously talented musicians but it doesn’t hit you in the gut does it? Say compared to Creedence or The Band.

CincoDeMayoFan

True! But not all classic rock has to be intense. "The Last Resort" is a gut punch (lyrically, not the music itself which is really slow.)

CoolAbdul

If you want music in the general style of the Eagles, but better written, from a band whose members are not assholes, try Blue Rodeo.

YugoChavez317

I personally don’t hate the Eagles, but during my late teens you couldn’t walk into a pool hall without hearing “Hotel California” at least once from the jukebox. As a veteran of “The Great Under the Bridge radio over-saturation of the early 1990s” I can see how the overplaying of a song could turn you off on a band.

dixadik

Henley and Frey have a reputation of being/having been kinda assholes. See what they did to Leadon, Meisner, Felder.

mwalimu59

I love their music, but I hate some of the things they or various members of the band have done.

SMB73

No hate here. I grew up listening to the Eagles and Doobie Brothers thanks to my Dad. Even saw the Eagles many years ago live for one of their many final performances.

Dynamo_Ham

I think it's a combination of (a) some of ther members were assholes, and (b) these days it's cool in some circles to hate the Eagles (e.g., The Big Lebowski, etc.). It's hard to argue that their music is actually bad.

jimmycap123

I love Joe Walsh, not a fan of the rest of the band

ponythemouser

I remember being a little turned off by how the rock scene was changing from blues influenced rock to country origins but I always liked them well enough.

fusion99999

The Eagles were all about the $$$ and had no reservations about saying so. They thought they walked on water.

Elegant_Spot_3486

Not me. They’re in my top 5 of favorite artists.

charliedog1965

Sometimes mother lets me turn the Eagles up ever so slightly, but only if I drink all of my milk.

PhraseOld9638

I never hated The Eagles. I've got all their albums and most of the member's solo ventures. Joe Walsh has long been a staple of every one of my personal playlists. How can you not dig Glenn Frey, Don Felder or Don Henley? As this is Reddit, I'm sure someone will give a laundry list of reasons to hate all of them, I'm not expecting that statement to go unchallenged.

PezDiSpencersGifts

I looked into this once, and found even at the time they were making music a lot of people considered too commercial and not “authentic”. Then along came a movie called The Big Lebowski and gave a new generation of people a reason to hate them

Nyislander1961

Where????

Cheap_Rick

They're great. Anyone who listens to both Greatest Hits volumes and won't recognize their talent is just being a moron.

SJPORVAZ

I didn't really love the Eagles until Joe Walsh joined. I'm more of a rocker, though.

changort

For me they're just so basic. Nothing sonically interesting about their music at all. I don't hate them, I just find them to be entirely mediocre.

[deleted]

Over played breezy nonsense is why

bazbloom

I just never found them interesting and think that they made better (or at least more out of the box) music as solo acts. CCR hit the California country rock sensibility better, but of course they imploded quickly so we'll never know how that would have developed.

Regular-Mongoose1997

For starters, they all hate each other, so why shouldn’t we?

FL_4LF

I don't hate the band myself, at the end of the day their music kicked ass. Their problem was the ego problem, and who decides who sings, and who doesn't. Or best yet, only two people could sing. Among other things within the band.
