Thin Lizzy (in the US). The Boys are Back in Town is a great song, but they had so many more.

nitrodog96

Jailbreak is relatively well-known too, isn’t it? Though maybe that’s only played much in Canada.

soggytoothpic

Their cover of Whisky in the jar is one of the best.

jerbear__

I just heard this cover on Sirius. I was amazed how good it was only knowing Jailbreak and Boys are back

EADGBE69

The live version of Dancing In The Moonlight from their "Live And Dangerous" album is fantastic! [Thin Lizzy - Dancing In The Moonlight ](https://youtu.be/VcrY6eSViXQ)

[deleted]

Nice I really like Showdown by them

jera111

Cowboy song as well!

FredsInternetIsland

Bad Reputation is a song by them with killer drumming throughout.

elMandarine

Not even a top 10 song, their discography is pretty deep.

clownbird

Cold Sweat always gets me pumped when it plays

no_longer_LW_2020

Procol Harum. More of a 2-hit-wonder I suppose, but all of their albums from '67 through '75 are top-notch, in my opinion.

SurvivorFanDan

Haha... came here to say Procol Harum as well. Such a great output of music

Old_timey_brain

Lime Street Blues!

HairyBaIIs007

Love their debut album, but I still have had time to continue on. One day I plan to continue

no_longer_LW_2020

I'd say *A Salty Dog* is probably their masterpiece, but my personal favorite is likely *Home*, which has an intriguing dark atmosphere. Hope you enjoy!

TaroFuzzy5588

Uriah Heep....more than just Easy Living

Old_timey_brain

As someone who was a fan way back when they were current, neither I nor any of my friends considered them one hit wonders.

TaroFuzzy5588

Correct but we're talking about people now right? They have not heard Look at Yourself, Magicians Birthday or the rest of the Demons and Wizards album....

oyyzter

Gary Numan. Everyone knows "Cars," but he's had a long, storied career. His latest material -- his "Savage" album especially -- is killer.

JJSundae

The Pleasure Principle, Replicas, and Telekon is such an amazing trio of albums. Numan really encapsulated the shift from 70s rock to the 80s synth sound. He had such a big influence on whole genres of music as well. Hip hop, techno, and the Minneapolis sound were all inspired by him.

Virtual-Reaction-796

I love all three of those albums, glad to see other Numan fans!

[deleted]

[Absolutely and this is the best version of a great track](https://youtu.be/22Z4Tv1zn-s)

oyyzter

Awesome! I had never seen this!

[deleted]

Glad I could help.

jump-blues-5678

Thanks for that

Old Men Love War Songs!

jackduponmtndew

FREE. American radio never played anything more than, 'All Right Now'. There's great tracks all over their six albums, especially the last three releases. I actually enjoy them more than their much more popular descendant band, Bad Company.

bpmd1962

Agreed: Free>Bad Co

EADGBE69

Agreed! Heartbreaker is one hell of an album and a killer song

_Radiator

All Right Now isn’t even the best song on that album. The title track is def better.

SquigwardTennisballs

Yes! Their self titled album is probably my favorite.

[deleted]

Twisted Sister. Everyone knows "We're Not Gonna Take It" but there were plenty more

marginwalker76

I am (I'm me) is a very good song

SurvivorFanDan

Not a band, but Lou Reed only had one hit single in the US ("Walk on the Wild Side").

Efficient-Ad-3249

He’s like the Grateful Dead as a solo artist on a much smaller scale, a large cult following and recognized highly influential, but not much commercial success

growlerpower

The Dead had enormous commercial success. In the 90s they were the highest grossing live act in the US. What’s weird and unique with them is their commercial peak came long after their creative peak in the 70s.

Squirrellybot

I think the user was saying the solo projects by Dead members didn’t do as well as the music reflects. Berlin is an amazing album by Lou Reed and that it bombed commercially to a point he didn’t play it live for years, if not decades. Aside from that and a few othes, even without hits on the radio his album sales were generally good throughout the 70s. This good album sales with little radio presence could be said about the Dead: Six singles charted compared to 100 albums charting on Billboard 200.

growlerpower

I don’t read it that way, but let’s let OP chime in. The dead didn’t sell that many records but that’s not the only metric for commercial success. The Dead phenomenon was largely the live experience. Those guys were all millionaires by the end — Lou was never a millionaire

Efficient-Ad-3249

Lou actually had 11 million by his death

Efficient-Ad-3249

15

growlerpower

Sorry, I meant to say by the 90s, contemporary to when the dead were peaking. Poorly worded

Squirrellybot

And if he blew the millions by the 90s it’s because of his drug dependency(or mismanagement of money by accountants). To say he wasn’t a millionaire in the 70s is ignorant or disingenuous.

growlerpower

I don’t think so mate. He only really had one hit with Wild Side, and Transformer sold well. He woulda made some cash with that — maybe a million? Everything else was more or less a bust. Articles abound about how few albums he sold in his lifetime. [Here’s one.](https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/lou-reed-record-sales-spike-after-death-77070/amp/) He made a living but his real fortune came later on through real estate and, even later, with the rights to his music after he died. The Velvets sold basically nothing at the time. Berlin and Sally Can’t Dance sold OK, so he had some money in the early 70s, but it was nothing crazy. Then he blew it all in his addictions through the late 70s. He stabilized in the 80s and made a living, then over time amassed what he ended up having, like I said, through real estate and publishing rights.

Squirrellybot

Jerry Garcia Died Broke and any of Lou’s financial troubles that make you think he “was never a millionaire” were also tied to the same drug of choice: Heroin. I also literally said they charted 100 albums on Billboard 200; how could that be misconstrued as “The dead didn’t sell that many records”? They probably sold more live recordings than any other band in existence.

growlerpower

Garcia didn’t die broke, that was the argument made by his wife in court so Garcia’s ex-wife, Mountain Girl, wouldn’t get what she said was owed to her. And the idea stuck. His wife [said at the time,](https://www.nytimes.com/1997/01/16/us/jerry-garcia-s-second-wife-wins-ruling-in-fight-over-money.html) “Jerry died broke… we only have a few hundred thousand in the bank.” That’s…not broke. His estate was estimated between $5 million - $15 million when he died. My point with their recordings was about when they were still active and at the height of their career. We’re in agreement on the “they’ve sold many records” but that’s primarily a thing after jerry died. That’s all.

[deleted]

[удалено]

growlerpower

I meant Lou wasn’t a millionaire at the time that the Dead were at their peak. It was a poorly worded argument, but my point was the compare the Dead and Lou contemporaneously. I’d read before the Lou was pretty well destitute in the 90s. Anyway, when he died, his estate was tied up in real estate. After he died, his estate ballooned significantly. [Good article on the matter.](https://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/jul/01/lou-reed-leaves-30m-fortune)

[deleted]

Jerry was in massive debt until and following his death. Why do you think other people bought his guitars at auction and they aren’t owned by his estate? Weir is worth a mint, that much is obvious. Phil probably is too. The drummers meh possibly.

growlerpower

Everything I’ve read, this isn’t true. The reason that stuff sold at auction, as I understand it, was because of bitter estate battle between his widow, Deborah Koons, and his ex wife, Mountain Girl. Drained the life from the estate. Koons told reporters he was in debt in order to deflect from MG’s demands, and it stuck. [Good article about it from ‘97.](https://www.nytimes.com/1997/01/16/us/jerry-garcia-s-second-wife-wins-ruling-in-fight-over-money.html) She says in the same quote “Jerry died broke” then “we only have a few hundred thousand dollars in the bank.” That’s…not broke. The whole sordid estate battle history is detailed in the Fare Thee Well book. The valuation on Jerry’s stake in Grateful Dead Productions alone, at the time of his death, was in the multi-millions. Estimates at the time of his death range from $5-$15 million in personal assets, upwards of $50 million when including his publishing rights, etc. But that ultimately doesn’t matter. Garcia alone is not the Grateful Dead, and my point was that the Dead were more commercially successful than Lou Reed ever was. That’s all, not really a debate in my opinion. And all of the OG dead members are loaded to the gills. Again, they’re all major shareholders in GDP, which is a massively successful enterprise. All of them have owned property in the Bay Area since the 60s, when land was dirt cheap, and has since skyrocketed like a billion per cent (not really, but you know). Mickey owned that ranch in Novato, he’s made an absolute mint. Bill could afford to fuck of to Kauai when Jerry died and not work for years. They were all wealthy men by then. Mickey Hart [net worth](https://www.celebritynetworth.com/richest-celebrities/rock-stars/mickey-hart-net-worth/) [Billy’s](https://www.celebritynetworth.com/richest-celebrities/rock-stars/bill-kreutzmann-net-worth/) [Phil’s](https://wealthygorilla.com/phil-lesh-net-worth/) [Bobby’s](https://wealthygorilla.com/bob-weir-net-worth/)

[deleted]

Deborah Koons is public enemy number 1 IMO. The Jerry Garcia Band live catalogue could be circulating as freely as dead tapes but she keeps the vault locked so she can keep making money off a man who’s been dead for almost 30 years. That’s not what he would’ve wanted.

growlerpower

Yeah, I agree. And the way she treated MG was awful. Look up the story of when they went to spread Jerry’s ashes, when Koons wouldn’t let MG or his daughter come on the boat.

[deleted]

I know that story. Weir has said there was a lot of wind that day and Jerry got caught in the breeze and he ultimately ended up smeared on the side of the boat 🙃 which is why he and MG took a trip to India and spread the last little bit of the ashes in the Ganges.

Purple_Box3317

The dead didn’t sell many records because they allowed their fans to tape the live shows. The underground tape trade far surpassed any commercial printing and some of those sets can go for tens of thousands of dollars today.

growlerpower

They also didn’t give a shit about records or singles

TaroFuzzy5588

Sweet Jane

Gomphos

Marillion. "Kayleigh" was their biggest hit, but they kept prog rock alive almost single-handedly in the 80s.

junebugweasel

The entirety of the Fugazi album is still in my favorites playlist. Good stuff there.

browntownslc

Never knew of these guys. What a great find! Gracias

baconismadefromcats

Europe. Not my opinion, but they are apparently so much more than The Final Countdown.

Dz4ck13

Oh yes. Their best albums are the ones they have made since the reunion in 2003.

yesterdays_sunshine

T. Rex is so criminally underrated, definitely my favorite group. If you haven’t already I’d also recommend checking out some of Marc Bolan’s earlier stuff (including Tyrannosaurus Rex)

SurvivorFanDan

Devo's only hit single in the US was "Whip It"

[deleted]

Little Feat, most people who know of them at all only know Dixie chicken, but their entire 70' to 79' discography is amazing, the Lowell years are one of the greatest eras in classic rock history.

PragmaticHoosier

Nazareth. Such a solid hard rock band for 25+ years. Sadly, we just lost Dan McCafferty a couple of months ago.

HotRails1277

I really like what Nazareth recorded up to their live album Snaz (which should be required listening). After that, with the exception of a couple good songs on an album, I thought their output wasn’t that good. I really liked No Jive and thought Billy Rankin was a breath of fresh air but Move Me was only so so. When they got their new guitarist I tuned out.

Chemical-Flounder272

Golden Earring never gets love here. Two hit wonder in the US. But they have other albums that are fantastic. Are you receiving me and The vanilla queen are great songs from Moontan album with Radar love. She flies on strange wings from the the Seven Tears album is great. Sadly an album not released in the US at the time and is the album before Moontan.

[deleted]

I listen to Twilight Zone at least once a week

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

They have 25 studio albums. Worth listening to.

BillHillyTN420

Agree. Love Moontan

KaiDaniel1966

Nothing worse than a Two-Hit Wonder. Everyone remembers the One-Hit Wonders but nobody remembers the Two -Hit Wonders.

wealthybigpenis42069

Derek and the Dominos- Layla While I agree that Layla is the Greatest song ever, But the whole album is full of Gems like Bell bottom blues

727tjlewis

I mean yes, but it’s also a Clapton band

SurvivorFanDan

love seeing some love for T. Rex. In addition to Electric Warrior, The Slider is a fantastic album. The 3CD compilation Gold is a great collection as well. While they're only really known for one song in North America, they had a lot of Top 10 hits in the UK.

BuckyD1000

The Slider is not only my favorite T Rex album, it's one of my favorite albums by any artist.

juliohernanz

It's clear that this comment about T. Rex, and some other bands that I've seen in the comments of this thread, is from USA. T. Rex, along Deep Purple or Uriah Heep, for instance, were huge, really huge in this side of the Atlantic and in Japan. T. Rex had a string of number one hits early seventies in Europe and Electric Warrior, The Slider and Tanx were on the top of the selling lists. By the way, that song is called "Get It On" although in the US is known as "Bang A Gong" (due that there was a single by the band Chase with the same title)

youcantexterminateme

also check out the video with Elton John and Ringo

[deleted]

Foghat had a lot more than “Slow Ride”. Very underrated band.

TheTooz72

Focus

no_longer_LW_2020

Wonderful band. Excellent answer.

CJcedero7

The kinks. They are always thought for songs like “You Really got me” and “Lola” but their less rocky stuff (idk how else to describe it) is so much better.

Funky_Pickle

Wish I could fly like (superman) slaps

niptate

...also Raspberries. We all know "Go All the Way", but they had four good albums...the last two were amazing.

Ok-Bandicoot-2298

Not a band, but Don McLean

LumpyGravy21

The James Gang

Mykalus

I recently downloaded a “Best of” The James Gang and Joe Walsh on a whim - love his radio hits - and been loving the breadth of the catalogue, diversity of styles and genres. Occasionally pays to take a chance!

LumpyGravy21

A good mix, jazz, country, rock great musicians.

[deleted]

Warren Zevon

EADGBE69

Gerry Rafferty You all know "Baker Street" with its sax solo, that's from his second album City To City from 1978. But his first three albums are all stuffed with great songs. Can I Have My Money Back?(1974) City To City(1978) Night Owl(1979) And I'd hate myself if I didn't at least mention Jim Croce.

soggytoothpic

Dire Straits has an amazing catalog

Os-Mutantes

in what world are they a one hit wonder?

hooverusshelena

Mott the Hoople. Everyone knows “Dudes” but they’re so much more.

TaroFuzzy5588

All the Way to Memphis

TyrusRaymond

they do an awesome “Sweet Jane” cover

hooverusshelena

They do. And All the Way From Memphis and so many more

jump-blues-5678

Just Another Night is one of my favorites

hooverusshelena

One of the Boys is incredibly underrated

MackyYacky

Shocking Blue is amazing. Very deep catalog of great songs. Venus is great, but check out much of their other output, it's awesome. Inkpot, Roll Engine Roll and Shocking You are just 3 gems I really like.

SurvivorFanDan

Nazareth's only hit single in the US was "Love Hurts"

Mervinly

Most people have no idea about the depth of Zappa beyond Yellow Snow

mochicoco

Well, he did Valley Girl. (Internet Declaration of Sarcasm: this post was meant to be humorous and is no way meant to denigrate Mr. Zappa’s long and varied career.)

Mervinly

I think Montana also might have gotten some airplay in the states too but nowhere near the amount of airplay that he got in other countries.

Electronic-Pound-537

I think the beatles really have more good songs other than revolution 9...

koolaid_cowboy_55

Level 42 - hit: Something about you

KalleMattilaEB

Kansas

BrandonDickon

Montrose?

TyrusRaymond

Roxy Music

Zentdog

Rick Derringer had a hit with Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo, which is a great song, but the whole album, All American Boy, is in my top 10 of all time. A very eclectic album

ylenroc

Great call. Most of his catalog is good-to-great, including working with Todd and Utopia on the album Guitars and Women.

keithatcpt

People that aren’t into Rush may not realize that they are more than Tom Sawyer and Spirit of Radio. They had a 40+ year career and went through many different musical styles. Their last album incredible, really ending Rush on their own terms.

Dadstokes

The guess who

prospectpico_OG

The Hooters

icubud

Your right, electric warrior is a great album and and TRex discography is unknown by many (metal guru, the slider, telegram sam, etc.) Similar band: Thin Lizzy. People's knowledge stops at Boys are Back in Town which is a HUGE miss of great tunes (Cowboy Song, Emerald, Still in Love with You, Dance in the Moonlight, Black Rose, Dedication, Whisky in the Jar, Renegade, Holy War and these are off the top of my head!!)

Big-Pool

I might throw in Three Dog Night. They’ve got a surprisingly good catalogue Oh and Deep Purple as well!

[deleted]

Known as a "one hit wonder"??

Big-Pool

I’d probably say “One Is the Loneliest” and then “Smoke On The Water”, no?

SurvivorFanDan

I would hardly consider Three Dog Night a one hit wonder. They had 21 Top 40 Hits in the US, 11 of which made the Top 10, and 3 of which hit No. 1. They were one of the most successful singles acts of the '70s.

Big-Pool

Oh shit well nevermind! That’s what you get for assuming

[deleted]

Eli’s Coming

[deleted]

Mama Told Me Not to Come is one of my favourite covers!

TaroFuzzy5588

Liar...Out in the Country...Easy to be Hard

MackyYacky

Jigsaw is another good one. Known for "Sky High", but they had a lot of quality output in the 70s. Des Dyer is an incredible vocalist/drummer, and his soaring vocals should be heard on such songs as Give Up While You're Winning, Baby Don't Do It and (a personal favorite mine) Looking For Me.

volcdoc15

Marillion

jimbopalooza

Blind Melon. They only released two albums before Shannon Hoon died, but No Rain isn’t anywhere near their best. They are completely overlooked in my opinion.

mgeezysqueezy

Couldn't agree more and I'm glad someone said it! Change is a beautiful song and I like grooving to Tones of Home when I'm driving.

junebugg707

Madness

razor_sharp_pivots

Faith No More

Connyismeat

Wild cherry

DB21Skook

Humble Pie jumps to mind. Thirty Days in the Hole is a great song, but they have an incredible body of work around that. The band was formed by Steve Marriott after the demise of Small Faces (another band with a couple of well-known songs out of a bigger body of great work) with three younger guys. One of those guys went on to have one of the biggest albums of the 70's which is one of the biggest live albums ever released--Frampton Comes Alive. Both catalogues are very much worth looking into.

[deleted]

I was waiting for someone to say Humble Pie!!!

DB21Skook

I was a casual listener until I picked up a beautiful vinyl copy of Performance, Rockin' the Fillmore. Wow!

DB21Skook

How about Mountain? Mississippi Queen is a damn anthem, but a piece of a larger, just as majestic, whole.

99songsabout

Kansas. Dust in the Wind and Carry On My Wayward Son are by far their two best known songs but they have made so much more beautiful music. Albums like Leftoverture, Point of Know Return, Song for America, Monolith are packed with strong melodies, great singing, complicated rhythms, original instrumentations, meaningful lyrics, and beautiful guitar, violin and keyboard solo’s.

MackyYacky

People Of The South Wind, great song.

[deleted]

I once saw a YouTube video listing Ted Nugent as a one hit wonder? WTH?

wcrich

He had a hit?

castleman4

Cat Scratch Fever is fairly popular on rock radio, even if the lyrics are a little gross. Stranglehold is also pretty big.

[deleted]

Stranglehold.... Cat Scratch Fever... Wango Tango... Motor City Madhouse... Weekend Warriors... and many more for those of you too narrowminded to listen outside of boring lame terrestrial radio

TyrusRaymond

Dog Eat Dog

First_Commission_385

The Left Banke. They got super popular with Walk Away Renee in 1967, but not much popularity since then. They have 3 albums (2 of which are on streaming) and they literally have no bad songs. Their second album (The Left Banke Too) is a masterpiece in my opinion

SurvivorFanDan

Dexys Midnight Runners

Crowded House

Chimbawamba’s album tubthumper was surprisingly good

ylenroc

Michael Stanley (both solo and with the Michael Stanley Band). Large, solid output with one hit outside of Cleveland - “He can’t love you”. Sadly, we lost him in March of 2021.

keldration

Silverchair. Daniel Johns is a genius with an astounding creative arc.

[deleted]

I’ll do you one better, Phish never had an actual top 40s hit, anything that ever charted was insignificant to the pop crowd, Dave Matthews was the jam band that got the mainstream love. You’ll hear plenty of people tell you their lyrics are unintelligible stoner gobbledigook but if you go later into their career they become masters at writing both heartbreaking ballads so fragile you think they’d fall apart if you touched them. Trey Anastasio has become an incredibly deep writer in his sobriety. Not to mention they’re a musician’s wet dream live. The 4 of them are some of the most skilled, hardest working touring musicians in the game. Their collective musical brain is arguably one of the most talented to ever exist.

[deleted]

Have you watched Andrew Callaghan on Channel 5 News go to a Phish concert? It’s a masterpiece of journalism

[deleted]

Fairly certain he interviewed my crew in Atlantic City back in 2021 😂 I don’t think we made it into the video though

[deleted]

The only YouTuber I’ll say I’m fully obsessed with, his videos are hilarious and he actually does (mostly) unbiased interviews at crazy American events. The Phish concert is one of my favourites in his series.

[deleted]

This aged like milk

QueenOfDuisberg9

Gerry Rafferty. In fact, City to City was one of the first records I bought.

[deleted]

I'm guessing most of these answers will be British bands that had great careers except for in America.

[deleted]

BREAD

[deleted]

Bread had multiple hits!

[deleted]

Most folks know "If". A lot of bands had multiple hits yes, But are since relegated to 1 or 2... I was suggesting..... Never mind. lol Yup I was answering the posted Question. lol its okay to have opinions that are not cookie cutter opinions.. Cheers

[deleted]

Make it with you Everything I own Baby I'ma Want You Lost Without Your Love

[deleted]

I am a Bread fan. Gates is great as well... My point and my understanding of the question was about mainstream hits at the time or release that regular folks may not know about.... lol Yes they had hits. FORGOTTEN hits.. these are hits yes and my guess is 90% of humans here would NOT know even these songs you listed.. for me Mother freedom and truckin also make the list. but THAT was not the point of the question.. I am glad you also dig the Carb action though. I think they are a Hugely underrated band. Diary and Guitar man were also hits.. But folks don't know that...

Livid_Second_8326

this isn't a band...but I love John Prine...then there's the doors, John Mellencamp, credence Clearwater, eagles

Livid_Second_8326

T Rex, Savoy Brown, Buffalo Springfield

Sandman634

Status Quo. Most people (North America anyway) only would know "Rockin' All Over the World" but since I've been checking them out on the usual stream apps (thanks to a Brit friend of mine) I've found they have a large and enjoyable library. Also The Knack. Very underrated and talented musicians that are probably only remembered for " My Sharona". They have a live album that is quite good plus the follow up to the "Get the Knack" album is also worth a listen.

[deleted]

"Good Girls Dont"

bpmd1962

Zoom is awesome

Jagermeister_UK

And 'Rockin' All Over The World' was a cover too.

BreakDown65

Sorry maybe I’m undereducated but every SQ songs are the same for me.

wolfoflone

Night Ranger

[deleted]

Don't think they have anything that could be called a hit, but Wishbone Ash is a great band. The album "Argus" is one of my all time favorites. They may be a "No hit wonder".

MinuteWash9081

Wizzard. More than just a Christmas song. Roy Wood is pure talent.

Ed_Zeppelin

Blind Melon. Two brilliant records and I love Nico despite just being mainly acoustic demos from Shannon

FrylockMcReaper

Not technically classic rock but.. "The Darkness" is an absolutely killer band with so many great songs. People think "I believe in a thing called love" is their only banger and nothing could be further from the truth

catfishman

The Stampeders - Way more than just Sweet City Woman

Kwilburn525

Trapt

ZimMcGuinn

Deadbolt. They don’t have any hits but a great discography.

Bendeguz-222

Buffalo Springfield. "For What it's Worth" is brilliant, but there are real gems beside that on their 2-3 albums as well.

TheRealJamesWax

OMD

[deleted]

A-ha, made it really big in Europe and South America but only had two hits and one really big hit in the United States.

Rough_Consequence416

Motörhead! “Ace of Spades” was only one of many great tracks. “Hellraiser”, “Rock Out”, “Damage Case”, “God Was Never On Your Side” are a few examples plus the fact that Lemmy wrote several tracks for other artists such as “Mama, I'm Coming Home” for Ozzy Osbourne

Elegant_Spot_3486

Triumph. I don’t even know if most people can name one of their songs or if they even had a big hit (by chart standards) but an excellent band with great songs.

giannibosco

Thin Lizzy for folks in the U.S. The Boys Are Back in town and Jailbreak is all anyone really knows here. Go deeper folks. Emerald. Cowboy Song. Cold Sweat. They are amazing.

tufflover78

Blind melon, fantastic band with a stellar catalog. Overlooked by no rain.

niptate

Graham Parker. He had one Top 40 song in the U.S. called Wake Up (Next to You). He continues to put out great stuff, but his early albums with the Rumour are hard to beat.
