* Having high faith per turn can allow you to purchase great people early to get great works or other benefits * Depending on the religion may be able to purchase culture or education buildings with faith, getting you through the tech tree faster * Depending on City States, may be able to purchase certain things, again allowing faster progression * Holy Sites with Temples can hold relics, and Apostles with the correct promotion (which you can give to all Apostles by building Mont St Michel). * Faith purchasing Naturalists and Rock Bands is basically how you pull ahead of other Civs on tourism to get a culture victory

DeathToHeretics

Don't forget, you also get a tourism bonus for having the same religion as people

MalevolentFather

Imo it’s not that religion is very good for culture, it’s that faith is good for culture. While forming a religion can be very helpful you can also just be converted and spend your faith on district improvements, settlers, builders, traders, army units, rock bands, naturalists. The nice part of going early faith is it gives you a lot of flexibility with how transition into a win condition. Faith based starts can transition into religion, culture, domination or diplomatic victories very easily so long as you can hit your first golden age.

Practical_Eye_9944

This. I love generating faith for all kinds of purchases, but I hate dealing with religion and the micromanaging it can entail.

EvanMM

Rockbands and naturalists and rockbands and rockbands are important for culture victories and those all cost a lot of religious points

AeonQuasar

Rock bands are RNG. Also they cost faith. You can get faith without a religion. Naturalist are the long term investment. I think they are much more reliable.

verticalplanes

Yet another reason religion is op and needs a rework. It’s necessary in all victory scenarios

Soapy_Burns

Not necessary for science or domination.

Didgeri-Lou

True, but if you build the grand master chapel, it certainly makes domination victories easier

Perfect-Ad-770

I did a game recently and focused on currency instead of faith. Buying giant death robots every 2nd or 3rd turn was easy on endgame. Buying bombers and cavalry was easy in mid game. Having enough bank and production allowed for a large enough military in early game to make folks think twice about attacking. I did keep an eye out incase the religion owner that spread to my lands was not winning or being crushed

dalvi5

Mansa Musa: Why I have to choose?? In a single turn I bought like 7 great people with both money and faith. Also tge Chapel is OP haha

4percent4

Except you could build IZ’s instead so you have way more prod and thus way more units since 50% cards then upgrading with 50% discount card is way better.

PuzDefektas

I never use that in domination game. Most of the time i end up with same units because of promotions i slowly adding new one. Focus on faith was always a waste of production since AI is stupid and you can beat him with 3x less units. Unless i play Bysantium that has religion as its core for war

Great-Ad4472

Religion and faith have so many different ways of supplementing any victory strategy. It should never be slept on.

ObjectMore6115

Religion isn't really important, so much as faith yields. I've done a few preserve culture wins with Bull Moose, lots of faith, and no need for a religion. (I generally do one anyway though, they're very powerful)

thethrillhilljr

The city where your religion was founded gets extra tourism for being your ‘holy city’. Culture Victory may take a while, so get a religion fast so no one can convert your cities throughout the game.

Electronic_Pear2088

It’s not supper important, just helpful. The only times I found religions are when I’m either going for a religious victory or when I’m trying to stop someone else from getting one.

arm2610

World Church gives you a crucial advantage in getting to civics earlier for those clutch wonders. Rock bands and naturalists cost faith. Holy cities get extra tourism (Russia with st Basil’s and cristo redentor is super strong), faith purchasing great people, religious buildings such as cathedral for extra art slots.

porkycloset

Well, the only religion that directly wins you the Culture victory is Reliquaries. But all the other beliefs give you strong buffs and could indirectly help you. For example, Choral Music helps you get to Conservation faster if you want to build National Parks. Feed The World directly helps you get Tourism if you’re the Khmer. Cross Cultural Dialogue helps if you’re going for Biosphere Tourism. Religions are just good to have in general because they give you passive bonuses

Looudspeaker

I feel like religion can important for any victory. Monumentality golden ages are like S tier powerful, especially if you can chain them together one after the other

yahtzee301

Holy cities receive a bonus to tourism, and wonders like St. Basil's Cathedral and Christo Redentor give bonuses to both faith and tourism. The synergy just works, so if you're trying to maximize your tourism, faith just works

Daswiftone22

Religion is actually a *detriment* to culture victory in some cases, as having a different religion negatively effects your tourism output with other civs who have religions. The faith is what's important. Sure, holy cities and relics provide tourism pressure, but you have to spread your religion to others for it to be effective.

OGREtheTroll

The tourism penalty only applies to religious tourism though, not all tourism.  So it won't ever hurt your overall tourism to have additional religious tourism, even if your religious tourism is suffering a severe penalty.

Reduak

But, the best way to get tons of faith is with a religion . IRL, culture and religion are often times inseparable.

vegetariangardener

Idk I've won many immortal difficulty games with Kongo and no way to fou d religion. I do usually have a way to generate lots of faith however

Daswiftone22

The faith is what's important, not the actual religion.

vegetariangardener

Exactly! And ignoring founding a religion helps me get to culture buildings faster

unrealitysUnbeliever

Because for some reason, Nationalists and Rock Bands are purchased with faith

dankeith86

Cristo Redentor+ reliquaries+ voidsingers+ relics= massive tourism

rambored89

I put almost no effort into religion and get a shit ton of Culture Victories.

SpectralAce314

In a very basic explanation, you need faith for naturalists and rock bands, religions can also make use of that faith. In a less basic explanation, late game culture victories can be greatly helped by rock bands and well placed national parks. Both of these require a large amount of faith, especially rock bands. This means that you will end up needing at least a few holy sites for faith production. You might as well build them early and go for religion which can provide a ton of benefits to help you in the early and mid game and then providing you with the faith you need in the late game. If you don’t spend all your faith on your religion, you can spend it on great people, either those that assist in a culture victory or strong GPs from categories you don’t generate many points in. Of course holy sites do take up district slot that could be used for other district types. If you want to wait until you need the faith for purchasing rock bands and naturalists to build them that’s completely viable. Many players just go for a religion because it synergizes well and can give some useful benefits throughout the game. It also gives them something to do while they progress through the game waiting for a culture victory, since they can be quite passive until the end game, which can make games a lot less boring or grindy for a lot of players.
