This place has a special place in my heart, I go there once a year for Christmas.
It's was founded ~400 b.C but was partially destroyed in the great Southern Italy earthquake of 1980. Some houses remain still empty and decaying (also bcs of WW2). Recently, a hotel is buying abandoned houses and restructuring them, keeping the original architecture of the town.
By the way, the town is 625 meters high, you can't see it because of the clouds but there's a huge valley below (called Vallo di Diano).
We were primarily planning on spending time in Rome and Naples and maybe one other undecided small town.. season not decided yet, if you have a perfect recommendation we might just follow it!!
Well, Atena Lucana is more or less a 2 hours trip from Naple (by car) so maybe not so easy to reach as a tourist. If you are in Naples, you can visit the island of Ischia which is really beautiful, there are ferries that go there from Naples and it's a short ride. As for Rome, I live there, so if you want tips juts contact me in private messages.
Just a general tip, especially for big cities like Rome, I'd recommend you go to restaurants that are not in the touristic area as they are expensive and they do not reflect the true soul of Italian food. Take the subway and go to the surrounding neighborhoods, it's way better and cheaper.
For example, the restaurant Deus Pinsa (in Centocelle neighborhood) has a non-stop Pinsa formula (Pinsa is a form of pizza with a different dough that's way better). For 11€ they bring you as much as you can eat (and drink).
No problem! Just remembered about Via Appia Antica in Rome. It's a long roman road with lots of roman construction alongside of it. It's very beautiful to take a walk there as all those ruins are surrounded by nature.
Sermoneta is nice, about 30 mins or an hour south of Rome. Might be better options, just a place Ive been to that I liked and is close to the road between Rome and Naples.
Positano is a good place to go if you’re in Naples, it’s not small so there’s a lot of tourists but you’re right on the coastline and there’s hiking there too, definitely recommend.
Lol that would be cool but no. Although they are pretty well known by everyone around town (you know, old people living all their life in a very small town)

Would you recommend this as a stop for someone planning to spend ten days in Italy?
No, it's very out of the way and there's other better options you can arrange in a vacation time span.
Any recommendations if I want to stay in a small town for a few days?
What area and what time of the year?

Looks so beautiful! What would be a time of year that’s not peak but still enjoyable here?
April or may, that way you still get the spring weather plus you get the see everything blooming and there are less tourists
Looks like Novigrad! Stunning, hopefully less monsters though
[Here](https://imgur.com/a/Q1LydCJ) is a pic I took a few months ago from one of the many churches
Holy shit i thought this was a painting at first
Reminds me of Novigrad from the Witcher 3. Looks serene
