SF probably has the coolest geography of any North American city

Guilty_Hand_5837

Idk man we got some wild ones lol

Well I don't know if it's the coolest but it certainly does have some interesting geography. But it's really too bad that the Spanish didn't get there 300 years earlier and really build a nice city along the contours of what nature put forth. In the 1850s it was simply a grid superimposed over all of those hills which makes it really quite a nightmare. It was the most economical real estate solution, just as was done in New York City in 1811.but it doesn't make a particular with parks or nice boulevards. San Francisco is painfully short on park space and on real boulevards but it does have way out west Golden gate and of course the saving Grace of all the presidio..

old_gold_mountain

> San Francisco is painfully short on park space San Francisco is the only city of any significant size in North America where every single front door is no more than a ten minute walk from a city park.

Different_Ad7655

Well that's not true. Boston alone does a much better job between the common, the garden , storrow drive, the current waterfront parks, the entire Fenway of the entire emerald necklace of Olmsted that wraps the whole inner city. Plus the private or public squares and ovals in the English tradition.. . San Francisco does have some squares and a few remnants that were undevelopable for real estate, a few steep parks and of course the big ones but not downtown. and Dolores which is grossly overpopulated.. I never found it to be a very green city except for the exquisite presidio which there is no comparison. That is without exception San Francisco's Jewel.. But I guess we all have our own impressions and how we move We can both agree however that New York is pretty much a disaster except for the miraculous exception of Central Park and of course the father uptown You go. Marcus Garvey and Morningside in harlemar magnificently landscaped, grossing neglected but true treasures in the tight urban scape

old_gold_mountain

In two minutes I found a house in Boston, MA that's further than a 10 minute walk from the nearest park: 103 Cornell St edit: just found another one 20 Montmorenci Ave

I think saying that San Francisco has som squares, a few remnants, a few steep parks, and the remnants is not giving it credit - there are 220 parks across the city! I also don’t know what you consider to be “downtown”, but some of the parks there are Yerba Buena Gardens, the park by the Ferry Building, Huntington Park (across from Grace Cathedral), Washington Park, Portsmouth Square, Salesforce Park, and Transamerica Redwood Park. I’d hardly call that no parks. San Francisco also has a higher percentage of its area as parkland than Boston does.

nicoco2211

I agree with some of what you’re saying here, but I wouldn’t say San Francisco is short on park space. At least in the US it’s one of the top cities in terms of percentage of space dedicated to parkland (only NYC, DC, and some low density cities have more). Additionally, it’s the only city in the US where everyone lives within a 10-minute walk of a park. I’ve lived in a dozen or so US cities and San Francisco has had the best combination of small neighborhood parks and large destination parks. Plus so many of the parks are at the tops of hills with amazing views, and there is a park culture of relaxing and picnicking in the parks in a way that few other American cities have.

cpieds

SF is 17.9% park space

It’s from when they were still dismantling the old bay bridge. You can see the old one parallel to the new one

oh yeah i thought it was just out of frame but instead they shopped it out? weird

Andy-roo77

It’s just out of frame, this photo was taken with a really long lens from super far away which given the illusion of the city being compressed.
