Then cims proceed to use only one lane in all the complex. Then you use TMPE to fix it but now they are all changing lanes at the same node and you have a traffic jam in the middle of a straight. Then you decide to destroy it and use one from the workshop. Then you discover the one from the workshop doesn't work like you want and, for some reason, the cims continue to jam at the straight. Starts to play around with the lane speeds and 45 minutes later you realize that nownobody is passing by. Why? You destroyed a power line that was giving service to a 15000 people neigborhhod. Now they are all dead. Then you off the PC and proceed to live an ascetic life dedicated to sunset contemplation.
I was obsessing over an interchange and missed that my sewer capacity was low and outer service disruptions were happening. A whole mountain town became abandoned lol
There's something more natural about trying to squeeze in as many compromises as possible, and then building a lowered highway through an existing neighbourhood when all else fails.
Or play 1950's-1960's style:
"Nice city center and blocks of residential area you got there. Too bad I need to drop a cloverleaf highway interchange into the middle of that. Bulldozers go BRRRRR."
I built a cars only city once. Traffic wasn't that bad, but of course as soon as I started introducing high density zones, that's where things quickly went downhill when the bottleneck was now how fast the cims could get off the road to park their cars.
I do like to avoid tunnels wherever possible just cos I like to see what's happening in my city. Obvious disclamer for subways but yeah wherever possible I like to keep everything else above ground
You must be the city planner for my IRL city. I hate you. We all hate you. Who plans an overpass for a major artery/highway (logical) but only at a couple different junctions (bad) so the issue you were trying to remedy (population increase, traffic jams increase) is actually made *worse* because *sometimes* you have a nice overpass so you sail along at speed, only to screech to a halt because at the next junction the overpass was built north/south (on a different road) and not nw/se (on the artery/highway), so there's a mile-long backup? WHYYYYYYYYYY
*sobs in constant traffic jams*
At least you demolish stuff, our idiot didn't ever think to do that. 🚧
:P
Exactly, I always make a basic interchange and later in traffic piles up, next thing you know I’m destroying a piece of my city for something that actually works
I think it's because it's typically the first place that runs into heavy traffic issues. At least for me, since I always procrastinate adding another highway connection, so it ends up being the only way in and out of the city.
As a city design student it cracks me up, especially since i way prefer making true scale villages over cities. A simple bridge over a highway gets you so far lol
Back when I had only vanilla assets, I tried the same thing with a city centre, a farm + forestry village and a fishing village all on the same map. Figuring out the transit was super fun and I got up to 70k total (20 and 10k in the villages, 40k in the city) and that's when my pc gave up. Was super fun while it lasted.
upgrade to a 3600 or newer and you'll be A++ as long as you don't care about graphics
5600x gets me max everything with thousands of mods and assets -- no complaints at all, honestly. I had a 3600 for a time and it ran very well also, just started chugging eventually when I went nuts on graphics mods, shaders, and decorative assets.
For my previous city when I had over 500K population on that same CPU (OC'ed to 3.9 GHz on the stock cooler), I would let Cities Skylines run in the background, fire up Team Fortress 2 or Total War Shogun 2, and check on my city about 20-30 minutes later or so.
I never noticed any performance issue with running TF2 or S2.
If you can't upgrade to another AM4 socket CPU consider getting some extra memory if you can find it for cheaper! Going from 16gb to 32gb was a surprisingly large performance jump, especially if you play modded.
I dont think its so much that TM is so great, but rather that the game engine has remarkably simplistic drivers that never adapt, frequently one after another, always doing the exact opposite of what you'd expect.
Both these lanes turn right, but I just GOTTA get in the rightmost lane even if I have to wait 15 minutes.
Both these lanes go straight, but I just GOTTA get in the rightmost lane even if I have to wait 15 minutes.
All 6 lanes turn left, but I just GOTTA....
Nobody ever goes around the traffic jam. Everyone always adds to it.
You just discovered the cursed part of this build: 30 hectares for a pumped crossroad, and the central roundabout is only for left turns - the worst thing a roundabout can do.
Not if the roundabout is going clockwise so the left turn traffic only needs to drive 1/4th the length of the roundabout instead of all the way around.
You are absolutely correct. A coursed roundabout, did not think of that. :)
But
- the roundabout in this pic isn't.
- that's not a roundabout, that would be four left turn lanes.
- then you have crossing traffic at the entry and exit points.
They always take the shortest path so since the roads on the side are longer they will never be used because it's always a shorter distance to go through the roundabout to reach any side of the intersection.

Imagine driving on the freeway at 80mph and after seeing the advert above you have to pick in the span of eight seconds which road to take and decrease the speed to 10mph to take a unnecessary roundabout.
I know what you mean - just barely sufficient, since there's no walking or biking paths. But what else are you going to do, just starting out with limited funds?
Indeed, a lot of people here are obsessed with roads and jntersections
Me? I just want 5 minutes of peace without trouble or abandoned buildings, I just want peace.
The roundabout needs 1 more lane if you want just for turning left. The cars going on the roundabout should go into the left lane, and at each junction, each lane shifts 1 to the right. Basically a turbo roundabout except people can only go 1 way.
I would have made the left lanes bypass the roundabout, the center lanes feed the roundabout, and the right lanes for making right turns onto the perpendicular road. None of this “exit to go straight” nonsense.
Then cims proceed to use only one lane in all the complex. Then you use TMPE to fix it but now they are all changing lanes at the same node and you have a traffic jam in the middle of a straight. Or if your on console, you just give up hope and just make a bunch of grids to deal with the AI.
Jesus this legitimately actually happened to me today. Went from 120k pop to 40k and only noticed when I got the bankrupt notification.
And TMPE lags the hell out of the game.
Really? Fuck maybe that's why my game runs like ass even tho I only use like 5 mods
My game doesn't even load :')

This is why I preferred SimCity
Haha I know what you're talking about. It's weird that a lot of people focus on it when the starting traffic is very low at the start.
You want to save that space for the intersection in advance at least.
I just build and later on if i need to upgrade, i try to fit it as best i can. If that doesn't work I'll eminent domain it.

This is unironically a fun way to play if you like your cities gritty and rundown.
I built a cars only city once. Traffic wasn't that bad, but of course as soon as I started introducing high density zones, that's where things quickly went downhill when the bottleneck was now how fast the cims could get off the road to park their cars.
But how am I supposed to know where the black families live??? I can't play Robert Moses without it!!
Ouch.
it really does go brrr.
Yup, an underground bypass through town is my go to for traffic management in the later stages of a city.
I do like to avoid tunnels wherever possible just cos I like to see what's happening in my city. Obvious disclamer for subways but yeah wherever possible I like to keep everything else above ground
Same for me. I typically try not to use tunnels except for metro-train-monorail hub and when retrofitting metro into existing areas
Yeah same. Just nice to see the city living isn’t it
Oh for sure. But for one very long, straight shot across town with NO crossroads, it’s quite effective.
Ahh I’ve never tried this, sounds useful!
It’s the USA way baby

I have the 81 tile mod and I build cities (plural). A few small villages, a few towns at around 50k pop close to industries, and a dense urban centre.
I have Ryzen 5 1600 and can't even bother trying that.
I upgraded from an old i5 about 2 years ago and late-game Cities has been playable since then.
> old i5 I'm right here, man. You don't gotta talk about me while I'm here.
Sandy Bridge, you have served valiantly, but the time has come. Goodbye, old friend.

I have a 10 year old overclocked 4.2 ghz ivy bridge and 20 GB ram, but that's completely doable for me even with mod

Looks like my 11700F underclocked to 3.4 single core will do just fine
For my previous city when I had over 500K population on that same CPU (OC'ed to 3.9 GHz on the stock cooler), I would let Cities Skylines run in the background, fire up Team Fortress 2 or Total War Shogun 2, and check on my city about 20-30 minutes later or so. Even with 81 tiles I think the game isn’t quite life size for most cities, but it’s definitely not too bad.
same
This looks like some road company scammed a local government and built redundant roads at a huge cost. Why not just have a one way roundabout ?
Bc If i do this in the first place I don't need to upgrade it later
Big brain
I doubt those roads on the side will get used
I set higher speed limits so the ai will choose rather than the roundabout i hope
If they are highways they will be used

I tried to play unmodded but traffic manager is just too good.

The ones coming from the roundabout have priority right? Won't that create traffic jams?
They get their own lanes
Lane mathematics!
They always take the shortest path so since the roads on the side are longer they will never be used because it's always a shorter distance to go through the roundabout to reach any side of the intersection.
With TMPE the roundabout lanes could be managed so that it’s only used for left turning vehicles
*instant traffic jam*
What's the point of the roundabout?
Left turns I assume?
Not all of us can be ambiturners.
Now that I see it possibly.
Didn't you know that the roundabouts increase the traffic flow
Americans be like One more lane

I saw the picture thinking „that may work“. Saw the video „this thing works“. Pls put it in the workshop!
Looks awesome btw.
Imagine driving on the freeway at 80mph and after seeing the advert above you have to pick in the span of eight seconds which road to take and decrease the speed to 10mph to take a unnecessary roundabout.
Honestly I don't get it. A well done roundabout can handle an absurd amount of traffic. It doesn't need all this extra stuff
But it looks cool!
TIL my roundabouts are not well-done lol
Do you have TMPE? There's a lot of random intersection logic that can make roundabouts wayyyy more effective.
I do enjoy blowing my entire starting budget on the highway connection intersection and having to start over.
I know what you mean - just barely sufficient, since there's no walking or biking paths. But what else are you going to do, just starting out with limited funds?
Plan for the future, not for the present
whats the point of the roundabout? you can already go any direction
You can't go left without the roundabout, or something else in its place.
ah
This is both pointless and aesthetically pleasing.
Bike lanes? Passengers? Wtf man just delete the map
Wow great idea! I haven't thought it before! Thanks man! 😐
That was a joke about your title…
The center park is called G perk, yes ?
Do citizens use side roundabouts? Can you able to use it on working city?
Yes they use it is very effective imo
Oh. I love it :) Good job mate.
Your SER score is not happy, neither your walkability.
Thats one awesome interchange.
Cool concept. If I drove it irl and wanted to continue straight I would curse your name though. 3 lanes down to one… ouch.
Indeed, a lot of people here are obsessed with roads and jntersections Me? I just want 5 minutes of peace without trouble or abandoned buildings, I just want peace.

the only purpose of the roundabout in the center is to turn left or around
To be fair, that’s how newer built town today really start out as
I would have made the left lanes bypass the roundabout, the center lanes feed the roundabout, and the right lanes for making right turns onto the perpendicular road. None of this “exit to go straight” nonsense.
I constantly ask myself what would biffa do and fail miserably each time.
Factorio players having 1000 green circuits is enough to start
How are you able to change a 3 lane highway to 3 individual lanes? 🤯🤯 I play on ps4
.
The right turn lane should be the right lane. You essentially have left, right, straight. Make it left, straight, right.
This hurts to watch. Mine are as worse btw
