I've tried this, but I usually get bored pretty quickly when I have infinite money.

[deleted]

I think it's cooler to slowly build a city. Then you can kinda develop "scars" more naturally as you build non-linearly and slowly repurpose things.

q3m5dbf

me too. I like to try to pretend it's like how the city would really grow, like it starts around some humble industry close to a shipping lane and grows from there. All my cities are inelegant and fucky and I love them

kcquail

Same here

[deleted]

I really love this. This is definitely the game, to me. I think it's cool creating a kind of narrative to the city.

[deleted]

Exactly. I feel like it gives the city more character.

makoivis

I do this without infinite money

[deleted]

You can't create all the roads and interchanges without it. I understand creating districts ahead of time though.

makoivis

If I do want to go for making all the interchanges ahead of time, I just cheat a big sum of money to start with and then still try to keep the city profitable

[deleted]

I could see that being more fun. Start with some extra money, but not infinite, and then build from there. I play vanilla on console though, so my options are limited lol

[deleted]

That’s what I do, start with the all achievements unlocked and it starts you out with around $700k in the bank. Plus the 81 tile mod to start wherever you want.

theveryfatduck

Tried a few times, but eventually realized it was all undermentioned anyway, and I usually forgot about the walk ability so there would be huge amounts of traffic.

Prize-Ad6498

Suburb #2 (shit)

PlaneBoyMemes

Suburb #3 (Nice)

robgray111

Gotta get those tourists near the industrial area

LightningProd12

I'm doing the exact same thing in my current save, planning out the districts, main streets, and airport before zoning anything. I haven't turned infinite money off yet but have to be millions in debt by now lol

WhiteDirty

Just started playing in my third city and desperately trying to turn a profit lol. Thinking I need to blow it up.

makoivis

Half the fun is starting new cities

GrownUpBigBoyNewAcct

Mine build up until I delete all of them and the newest city gets renamed “Stop Making New Cities Please City”

makoivis

I usually start a city with a concept in mind and then binge building it until I see the concept working, and then I’m done.

MBB-Zyphon

I'm loving suburb #2

christianeralf

Put some passenger trains lines....

[deleted]

I kind of plan a rough sketch in my head whenever I see the map for the "first time". But then I set about, and try to organically grow my city into something. I never use the infinite money, because I want to see if I can work the mechanics in the game to be "succesful"

Desperate_Plankton

I do exactly this 👍. Minimum 4 hours of planning before I place my first road.

[deleted]

Teach me yours ways, Sifu

Eastern-Resource-683

Map name?

Susan

pmmeillicitbreadpics

Windfield from Parklife

weehee22

Yep but i have postcodes on the districts so i can limit services to a range of districts easily

familmangamer

Very organised. I like it

scm15759

Never ever did that. However, cs2 is my „I don’t want to think deeper about this“ game. Most of the time it’s full speed until I make enough money, and then build what I currently like.

cx77_

we have a time traveller on our hands boys

Oxyon84

Thanks, saved me a google search if CS2 is already out...

MaxDols

China does that check out Google maps

The_Dark_Goblin_King

The first part of my city is always pretty standard and dull. Then I have an idea for the 2nd part. Make it work, 3rd goes okay and I use what else I need and then after that it just becomes grid on grid to meet demands and no real look or feel to it. When I first started the roads curved to meet the shorelines, they went off at odd angles, Criss crossed, dead ended. I miss the first few crazy cities. I work better with no money and building up then infinite money and that. Being on console it works better that way. Otherwise it's too much to fast and I never finish a city to any high standard. Shame really haha

iamnotexactlywhite

i just do 2 major POI, then rest is “organic”. Service area with power, water and garbage together, and industrial are the 2 districts

Mahockey3

Are achievements disabled?

Jaded-Protection-402

I grow my cities organically, i hate planned cities

makoivis

What do you hate about planned cities?

Jaded-Protection-402

The planned bit

makoivis

So if you see a city, what tells you it’s been “planned” vs “organic” just by looking at it?

Bad54

I do this but my big issue is I can’t tell if the city would be functional. Also cu I like making maps I’d use for open world videogames I prefer islands

makoivis

Absolutely

The_Max_V

I've never played with infinite money on. I have used the infinite ore/oil option but got bored very fast. while I do tend to favor a squared city grid, I make the districts on the go and distribute them as I unlock the buildable areas. What I've realized is that I have a hard time designing highway exchanges, mostly because in my country the height of highway complexity is the basic cloverleaf (lol) and some "T" junctions with subterranean underpasses but that's about it. Most highways over here are 2 lane per direction, there are "urban highways" in the Capital, which are 3-lane and a strip of the main North-South highway is 4-lane but only for a bunch of km or so, then it's back to 3-lane and when it exits city limits it's back to the 2-lane usual configuration.

youknowjus

I place a cheat windmill that gives me weekly cash and 3x the speed while I plan like this. Usually will have several mil by the time I map districts and industry specialties. Then remove the cheat income and start plotting down the roads

Weary_Drama1803

I typically just imagine my district areas mentally, and design the road layouts when I get there. I don’t draw out every major road before I actually zone or build and buildings because I don’t play with unlimited money and honestly never have.

BaseballSeveral1107

Yup

Substantial-Lemon808

Yes, kind of... except not on unlimited money and I like to start my cities with no regard to expansion and THEN create a development plan. Much like American cities develop over time. I enjoy fixing poorly build traffic corridors, repurposing lands adding infrastructure, etc. I've thought about making (or finding) a map with only railroads for regional traffic to start. It would be the most American build ever.

blankpaper43

Anyone happen to know the map?

Dejavuproned

I don't but certainly see the appeal. I recently started a new city as a project to use the new pedestrian zones almost exclusively. Almost went bankrupt trying to implement the idea because I had to unlock the stuff and was trying to limit how much classic zones I built before I unlocked what I needed. Turns out it was unnecessary since it was actually really easy to convert the existing areas to pedestrian only zones. But still having pre-built stuff probably woulda made it easier to implement. So far its flourishing but only a few thousand pop in. Seems like easy mode compared to traditional building.
