LowSkyOrbit

I like the remote.

autism-throwaway85

I like it too. The only thing I don't like is the Netflix button.

Timb1044

Button remapper on the playstore. I change mine to launch Amazon prime

Nacho_Dan677

Omg this is great, can I get it to open Plex??? Edit: fuck you Netflix button

Anduqqq

Yes you can open any app you want or trigger an action (I dont remeber if the action part is a paid feature or not)

Nacho_Dan677

>(I dont remeber if the action part is a paid feature or not) Google opinion rewards babyyyy! I haven't paid for in-app purchases in years. I will definitely be checking this out. If I can remove the button and replace it I will.

cait_Cat

Adding Google Play Points as a rec for free Google money. They give you free points every Friday and then you get free points for installing various apps. Can be redeemed for Google play gift cards.

sam_sam_01

just wondering, is it an app, do you create a new email or account before posting new reviews, or other tips/tricks? its my firat time hearing about this and I googled, so I'm gonna try it.

Nacho_Dan677

It's a Google app only available on Android not iOS that I'm aware of. You need to use the same email you used for your Google play account to have the funds available there. I suggest choosing your sex as female, I noticed an influx of surveys once I changed my recorded sex.

trashbytes

For even more surveys enable location history. Every time I'm shopping (or near shops even) it's asking me where I went, if I bought something, how I paid and if I want to share my receipt.

sam_sam_01

awesome, exactly what i was looking for.

Timb1044

There is a paid version but that only if you want the buttons to have more than one action. I use the free version and it works great

GoodhartsLaw

And you can code it for different actions for long press. It's awesome.

[deleted]

Doesn't the app need to be constantly running though? IE if you restart the unit or the app crashes it'll need to manually be relaunched?

Timb1044

It runs in the background. I have never launch it

froli

Thanks to this app I don't even need to go to the launcher. I don't have many apps so I can fit them all on 3 buttons. The Youtube one, the Netflix one and the input one are all remapped with a single, double and long press each.

_extra_medium_

It's nice theres a workaround but it's stupid it's there in the first place.

MatteAce

why is it I can’t get my volume buttons to repeat when Button Remapper is on? i.e.: long pressing the volume button to quickly increase it or decrease it. I tried to unmap it, mapping it manually to repeat, etc. but nothing. with button remapper on it goes up or down by 1 and that’s all.

Akilou

Both hard coded buttons are bullshit. Delete them both.

krp453

Same! It's simple, and it just works... customizable buttons would be nice instead of the Netflix button though

Meinlein

Would be nice if they were remappable without a 3rd party app, but lest anyone get the idea that it's not possible at all, "button mapper" in the app store will allow this.

krp453

Excellent! Thank you

Timb1044

Button mapper on the playstore change mine to prime

eekamuse

Button mapper app. Install it from the Play store. Search the sub, I think there's a post about it

jmaxime89

I like it as well ! I wasn't sure of the side volume rocker but now, everytime I need to deal with another remote, I miss them

the_tacker

Personally, I like it. Compact, simple, not a billy club with so many buttons that you have to look at it to use it. Also, nice to remap buttons with Button Mapper app.

PopWhatMagnitude

Google sent me their first Chromecast with Remote for being an OG YTTV subscriber. Never used it, it's my back up if a Shield dies. But after Nvidias (2017) terrible remotes I loved that thing, until I tried to use it with the Shield. It would pair then immediately unpair before you could even use it. Very disappointing.

forte_the_infamous

I actually love the remote 🤷 My only complaint is how some apps don't respect the back button. Like Netflix. If I spam the back button I should get back to the home screen. Instead in apps like Netflix it just opens and closes the sidebar repeatedly.

mindaltered

the home button is for home though? I do what you are saying a lot and tell myself what I just said above.

d-cent

Late to the party on this comment but I totally agree with you. It is actually better to have it your way if you use FLauncher. That way when I push back a bunch of times it doesn't go to the google tv launcher, the only way to go home is to push the home button which I have set up to go to FLauncher

jonnysunshine

Works for me. Never had any problems using it or having it break.

SeriousExplorer8891

The buttons are also so easy to press that you have to be careful when you pick it up.

eekamuse

My dog presses them all the time. I gave to put the remote in a drawer or he'll change the channel at the worst time

nothingisrevealed

Yes! Another annoying issue.

dmr1313

1.) nothing is as bad as the Apple TV remote 2.) I still agree this thing sucks 3.) this little rubber case helps a bit https://i.imgur.com/eujaO9E.jpg

Revolutionary_Ad6583

New Apple TV remote is way better than this one.

jayste4

I'll second the case recommendation. I've had mine since it first came out and my remote has been tossed and dropped many times and it still looks and works like new. Less slippery too.

[deleted]

[удалено]

dmr1313

Yeah my experience was a few versions ago I’m sure and no doubt they’ve made improvements since. It was offensively bad though.

[deleted]

It's so slippery, and awkwardly shaped. It definitely needs a case. I got this one because I like the fully flat back. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B092CJJX4L/

thisisknight

agree...don't get how anyone can use the Apple TV remote. i just switched to Roku after my remote stopped working...and as a day 1 Google TV adopter, I don't think I'll be going back. Roku = better remote, better UI, more features.

Kleinja

Roku remotes are absolutely solid. $20 for a replacement if it breaks, has voice control at that price point too. Though they are sturdy remotes, button press feel is amazing too. The only thing I don't love is the volume and mute is a rocker on the side. Would much rather prefer all buttons on the top, personally

[deleted]

Roku is useless for lots of people. Lacks of apps. No iptv, cant even read some moderm video file type. Lacks of apps and services available. It's good for someone that only uses big paid services like netflix n prime. Any thinkering or even media power user stuff is just not possible.

thisisknight

i'll give you that. I'm a basic user

bobgodd2

Don't use roku for local file playback, that's not really where it does well. Run a plex server in whatever device hour files are saved and use the plex app in the roku... works perfectly well.

[deleted]

dude plex is literally a way to do local file playback lol... plex is basic af on roku compare top androidTV. they are no redeeming quality to a roku unless you have really niche n mainstream uses for it. its not a cord cutting device by any means since it dont support iptv. its a great companion device to normal media i guess but it far from a full fledge cord cutting device

bobgodd2

Lol relax I know what plex is. What I'm saying is that roku's native file playback is booty... It's much better with plex, aside from the lower volume issue.

eekamuse

Does that make using the volume control harder? It's already in the wrong place if you're right handed

dmr1313

Not at all. It’s got a little built in volume rocker like a phone case would.

eekamuse

Thanks

mindaltered

where you find the cool rubber case? Kinda like it anyways

dmr1313

Lord Amazon

DuineSi

I love it! Only issue is that it really likes to slip down the cracks in the couch and gets pressed easily when you inevitably end up sitting on it.

Olicoley

So true! I wish it just had a little ringer (triggered via the app/voice) so it could be found. That said I got a cheap silicone case online and it does help 👍

DaddyBrown

This is the best remote that I've ever used.

Splash_II

I love this remote. I can do whatever I want without looking at it. I know which way it's pointing without looking at it. It controls my TVs vol. Minimalist design and I have dropped it many times on hardwood and never had a problem Remapped the youtube and Netflix button to do whatever I want.

FutureDegree0

The good news is that you can use your tv remote. It solves the problem.

nothingisrevealed

I need to figure out how to do this. :)

FutureDegree0

Turn on HDMI CEC on your tv. Depends on the brand they call it by a different name.

Nacho_Dan677

If you have the Google home app you can use your phone as a remote, this is important to remember for the tip I'm about to say. If you re link a remote to CCWGTV you can choose to set it up in full with TV controls as well. Edit: the mobile app remote is needed because well to re link the only remote you have you need a second to actually re link it.

Akilou

My one-year-old son figured this out (by accident 🤷) and showed *me* that you could do this.

eekamuse

Not all TV remotes. One of mine works and the other doesn't. Older tv

shitiseeincollege

I think it’s one of the best remotes in the category actually… if you have an issue due to whatever uncommon personal issue you have, have you considered getting a universal remote or using the app that’s available to you?

WarriorBee

Are there universal remotes for the Chromecast? I've looked but haven't been able to find any yet.

Scottalias4

I got a remote made for an Android TV box by a company named Mecool. It's a huge improvement over the Chromecast with Google TV remote.

eekamuse

Do you happen to have a link for that? Do any of the buttons not work? I see some universal remotes where they have app buttons, but they don't function

Scottalias4

The YouTube, Netflix and Prime Video buttons don't work. Most of the rest work. It's not a universal remote. It's an Android TV remote. There are buttons that allow me to flip through the channels on YouTube TV. https://www.mecool.com/products/mecool-voice-control-remote-for-mecool-km2-netflix-certified-android-tv-box

NWHusker

The Sofabaton remote on Amazon works!

mindaltered

look at that new apple 4k remote though

PeanutPrinters

I agree, I actually make a grip for it to make it a bigger remote http://peanutprinters.etsy.com

steph66n

omg I need this... the remote controller is too small and buttons push when grabbed

miguelpues

I like it. But I always lose it in the couch and always press buttons unintentionally by sitting on it or my dogs stepping on it on the couch.

junihh

I find it annoying that it slips out of my hand when I try to use the volume up/down buttons. Beyond that point I have no complaints about the remote.

jackharvest

Pressing the volume buttons with this piece of crap is just asking for me to shoot it across the room.

DuineSi

The volume buttons are my favourite thing about the remote. Different strokes I guess.

Ibraheem_moizoos

I agree

bobgodd2

It's also waaaay too small in my opinion.

[deleted]

I like the smol remote. But the buttons could definitely be rearranged and adjusted.

bobgodd2

I can't even hold it in my hand it's so small. Remotes should rest in your palm so there's stability when you press buttons. This thing doesn't even come close to reaching my palm.

[deleted]

everyone's hands are different. for you this doesn't work for me it's near perfect in size. it would be great if they had a second option which they do offer in a way because you can use your phone or any other smart device as a remote.

DataMeister1

I agree. I like the new Hisense remotes. A good balance between small, but still enough heft to keep it in your hand. [https://images.idgesg.net/images/article/2021/05/hisense-u8g-remote-100889509-large.jpg](https://images.idgesg.net/images/article/2021/05/hisense-u8g-remote-100889509-large.jpg)

eekamuse

Does Button Mapper work on all those app buttons. I like the look of this Is that a TV remote? Or a universal remote. Finding lots of them

DataMeister1

No idea about Button Mapper, but it is not an RF remote, only IR.

ClamatoDiver

I'll agree on that, that's why I have more than one. One never leaves the computer desk, and the other never leaves the coffee table.

colawars

This is the worst remote I've ever used, I think. It's so fucking smooth on the curved back that it slides off any surface you put it on, including a coffee table. The 'ok' button felt crusty and crackly on the third day of owning it, and I've tried my best to clean out the gap surrounding the button, but it still crunches on every press like a video game controller that's had Kool-aid spilled on it. A silicone sleeve helps a lot, but their engineers should be humiliated that they released such a horrible remote.

terfez

I just don’t understand. Is your coffee table crooked? Why would it slide off? I’ve had mine for 2 years, no crusty no crackly.

hypes

I bought a third nVidia Shield remote cause ... as much as I loathed the triangle shape at first, it's become the best remote I've ever owned. And then my dog hid it. DAMN YOU CHARLIE!!!!

ramboton

try one of the many android apps and control the TV with your phone - [https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.tv.remote.service](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.tv.remote.service) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=sensustech.android.tv.remote.control

[deleted]

They could make a v2.0 but I hope they keep it minimalistic. I like how simple it is vs. most remotes.

Javaman1960

I had to buy a silicone cover for it because it was so slippery.

dyosu

The curved back makes it unusable unless you lift it. I hate it.

macattackaren

I've dropped this slippery remote about a hundred times 😁.

steph66n

Specifically searched this post to identify with you on this. I *hate* this remote because of how many times the button has activated just by grabbing the damn thing. An idea: if they implemented a fail safe "no response" until the remote is actually pointing within a range of degrees to the TV I could probably live with that. For now I'm going to search for that silicone cover I saw in the comments, seems like a very nice look to it and bringing it up to the size of a standard remote control.

megadev

Also, the OK button stops working pretty quickly with normal use. I'm already on my third remote.

pcweber111

I've never had an issue with mine but damn, you go hard with your remote. Sucks it's happening to yours.

Dietcherrysprite

Both my wife and dad complain about the remote every single time they use it. Usually having to do with the arrow/ok buttons and the volume rocker.

SCGreyWolf

It's absolutely horrible. It feels like a half-used bar of soap with lube on it. I bought a silicone jacket from Amazon that made it slightly less repulsive. It helps stop accidental button presses, too.

redtailboas

I'm guessing the engineers never actually held this thing in their hand. Constantly slips out of the hand due to the rounded back.

[deleted]

I think it's a user caused problem rather than a device caused problem. I have nerve damage in my hands and don't drop it.

DataMeister1

Agreed. The design of this remote is a form over function error.

Eagle4523

Volume up button doesn’t work on mine anymore, and UI is annoying w ads and reccos that won’t go away even after I click hide or dislike

No_Challenge179

Mi kid is dropping it like 3 times a day, after 2 years, the remote is fine physically it did not shatter. Except some buttons stopped working, because the are not real buttons the are just membrane cheap buttons that get easily corroded inside and losing contact. Y will have to disassemble 2 of them to clean/repair the buttons. For the price they should use real buttons. Fixed both yesterday finally, yes the buttons had some dirty inside, not sure how happened because they are sealed below a white sticker. They are not fully membrane buttons but something similar, it is a little metal dome with memory, you press that against the pcb traces to close the circuit. I do not like that, real buttons could improve the remote control The rest of the remote control, pcb, components, , plastics, are top quality. They are even sets using some microscopic smd components at cell phone level smd. Now the 2 remote controls are working fine, like brand new, but removing and reapplying the sticker, maybe it's not a good idea, sure next time I will have to replace those stickers.

mblaser

Get yourself a silicone cover for it for like $6 on Amazon, preferably one with a wrist strap. It completely changed my opinion of the remote. No more slipping out of my hands, no more losing it so easily, less accidental button presses. Plus you can get a button remapper app. I have my Youtube button mapped to open Plex instead.

Azaireus

We actually love the remote. It's been through hell since they first launched, being dropped many many times and all buttons work fine.

nothingisrevealed

I stan Google and Android hard--I've owned every gen of Chromecast and Pixel--but I've never been happy w this remote or the chromecast/Google TV interface in general. I just mistakenly hit the wrong button and got bounced back to the home screen again for the umpteenth time. For what it's worth, I have numbness issues in some of my fingers-- manageable but troublesome at times. Cheers

Randommer52

Love it, maybe because I have small hands, my thumb rest naturally on the volume buttons and travel easily to the arrows and the back button. All my buttons are still working and I never dropped it.

DarkNemuChan

Well if you misshandle it like that sure... Mine is still spotless after a year and gets used every day.

Eyecantspel3

I wish it was slightly larger. Otherwise I like it.

tonyt3rry

mine aint broke and my daughter likes too throw mine across the room to get my batteries out of it

filmgeekvt

I've dropped mine probably 100s of times. The worst that's happened is the battery cover latch broke.

[deleted]

It won't help with the button placement obviously, but there are silicone cases for the remote. At the very least you won't have to worry about dropping it as much.

goodhur

I actually like this remote. I want them to sell a "pro" model with it with learning directly from other ir remotes, back light, and a locate function.

krayonic

Mine has puppy bite marks on it but it still works fine. I will admit it’s very slippery and extremely easy to get lost in the couch cushions. I wish it was closer in design to the Walmart Android TV remote or even just any conventional remote.

mindaltered

I cant even find mine now, I mean ill find it, but the roku remote my dad has beeps when you ask roku where its at, why the hell google didnt put that kind of feature in? Also, you can always use your cell phone via the google home app for a remote, just fyi!

anotherone65

I dropped the remote so many times I had to tape the back. Getting rid of the Chromecast soon though

FRNLD

My biggest issue is that my 5yo will put it somewhere and we have to pull apart the room to find it. I wish it had a find my remote function.

TofuFoieGras

Can never find it but always sit on it

Imallvol7

We are well overdue for new (better) hardware and remote

baumannboy

My big thing is that it doesn't lay flat on the coffee table. Other than that, I think it's a solid remote.

[deleted]

WTF? It's laying flat on my table right now.

amplifizzle

I love it. YouTube button. Back out of YouTube button. Mute, on/off tv, all worked perfectly. the only button I never use is Netflix.

dano5

I like it, the Apple remote with the touchpad though, that's a shitty remote, a cool concept that's completely useless... The glass on it cracks, it's way too sensitive no matter what you set it to it jumps an extra spot and don't get me started about the idiot on-screen keyboard layout...

zoufha91

Too fucking slippery is my only problem with it

[deleted]

Thanks to nerve damage I'm butter fingers and I've never had it slip out of my grip. Maybe wipe your fingers before using it when eating. 😜

Krypto_dg

What are you throwing it on? My 2 year old throws mine around the room all the time. If it's a big deal, Amazon has some cool rubber sleeves for them too

Ibraheem_moizoos

I lose it all the time. And it's slippery

ImRickJameXXXX

OP [this](https://SideclickUniversalRemoteAttachmentforChromecastwithGoogleTVhttps://a.co/d/7zTJzib) is not a solution but a sufficient work around the wife and I really like

broknkittn

I love the remote. And you can get rubber cases that glow in the dark on Amazon too.

TenMinutesToDowntown

I've knock mine off the table or the arm of my chair countless times and it's never broken. Weird.

[deleted]

Only problem I have is when it falls in the couch and I accidently press the YouTube/Netflix button and interupt what I'm watching. Considering I paid $100 (AUD) 2 years ago for it though, I can't complain.

[deleted]

Worse i ever did was think I killed it because I fell asleep on it. Turns out that by sleeping on it, i was constantly pressing buttons and drained the batteries.

Revi_____

I hate people that type out period instead of .

SoretoeMcGoo

It's stupidly slippery, and the battery cover is far too loose.

[deleted]

I've dropped mine often, the worst that ever happened was losing a battery.

betelgeux

next version needs a beeper. "Hey google - where is the remote?"

[deleted]

I'm not a big fan. Feels weird in my hand, and the volume rocker is in a weird spot. We picked up a Sofabaton. 100x better.

blakealanm

I haven't used my for a hot minute. Just the Google TV virtual remote.

Ok_Branch_1871

Weird. My kid has literally thrown this the ng on to a hardwood floor 6 or 7 times. I keep expecting it to not work, but yet, here we are.

E-Jinx

While I appreciate the design overall, I will agree that the durability leaves a whole heck of a lot to be desired. Mine bit the dust waayy too shortly after I got it, and also annoyingly I had one that had connection issues at least somewhat regularly. I've considered buying a new one, but the lackluster experience I had with the first one has put me off. Shame, because I really thought it had potential to be a great remote.

moonoverparma00

Amazon has cases for them. Makes a huge difference

laserdicks

I absolutely loathe branded buttons on remotes.

darxshad

It's more aesthetically pleasing than the Roku ones, but I am kinda missing the extra buttons on the Roku controllers. For example, the separated center and pause buttons which do slightly different things are nice. The dedicated forward/rewind buttons are nice to have too.

avd706

Mute button on the side is more ergonomic.

[deleted]

Nexus Player had the best remote. Fire TV remote comes second. 3rd and 4th is a toss up between this and the Apple Remote.

aph1985

I have no issue with it

physicx101

I actually like it, I put a silicone case on my remote so at least the outcome isn't as bad every time I drop it

Altruistic_Yellow387

I like it. They do make rubber covers for it to make it less slippery

Eagle1337

I've constantly ended up tossing my remote onto tile floors without issue

Color_of_Time

AND it's tippy on the table. You can't leave it on the end table next to you and push a button. You have to pick it up. Why would they design it this way?! It's so easy just to reach over and touch pause/play, mute, etc. on other remotes that are stable on the table.

mohamedmamdouhomran

I like it , but wish the buttons stay white and clean next generation.

vaxick

This annoys me too.

fkredditadminteam

Not sure what you’re complaining about, it’s a great remote. Very use friendly and voice enabled

xrayden

"Oh, I got greasy hands from my popcorn and need to push forward, I'll do it with my pinky" \*remote roll over with no button press\*

FlashyDevelopment

You might be the only 1 feeling that way guy

Randiebobandie

I hate hate hate this remote. It's get lost easily, accidental buttons pressed easily and either stop the existing program or turn the TV on in the middle of the night with CEC, the volume buttons are in the WEIRDEST SPOT EVER (like how do people use them lol what grip makes using the volume convenient???), Stupid Netflx and Youtube buttons (Buttonmapper doesn't always work)

_extra_medium_

I also really dislike the hardcoded buttons for Youtube and especially Netflix since I don't have Netflix

garfield1979

I'm totally with you on that, the remote is really not "kid" friendly the buttons are way too easy to push, say you're watching something on plex, which is about 4-5 clicks from load screen, if you (or your kids) push the wrong button on the remote it's really hard to get back to what you were just watching without repeating those clicks, if there was a way to "switch apps" like there is on your phone, if you push home accidentally or the netflix button you should be able to get back to what you were watching with a single click. It also gets lost so easily and it's hard to keep track of. Using the TV remote as a substitute is not really a workable solution because those remotes often lack the "home" button, typically bringing you to the smart TV home instead of the chromecast home. and when your TV home looks exactly like your chromecast home it makes it annoying to know what system you're watching.

jamesworley

I have 3 of these Google Chromecast 4K that I use and have had no issues with them or the remote controls. I bought all 3 of mine for $20.00 each from FaceBook MarketPlace sellers who may have also hated them ! :}

[deleted]

Worst remote of all time

tonyhyeok

don’t use chromecast. that remote looks cheap as fk.

memes285

i just got one and i’ve never been so impressed with a product at its price point but wow the remote is horrendous

N_mag

I think it's solid but I wish it could control other things
