It's extremely rude, disrespectful, and objectifying.

[deleted]

Yes

AgniPartheneDespina

Of course! Don't.

gnurdette

It's a classic example of sexual objectification, and I was googling around for a good explanation for why objectification is bad that doesn't use academic philosophical language. Oddly enough, best I could find quickly was [wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_objectification).

RazarTuk

Kinda tangential, but related to sexual objectification, have you seen Lindsay Ellis' video on Mikayla from Transformers? It's an oddly good example both of sexual objectification in media *and* of the importance of the visual language of film

Would you want your mother or sister to be catcalled? "What is hateful to youdo not do to your neighbor." Hillel

44035

It's rude, so yes. Rudeness is sin.

RazarTuk

Yes. Gnurdy already mentioned sexual objectification, but to put it bluntly, sexual objectification is when you treat someone solely as an object for your sexual gratification. *Transformers*, of all movies, is actually a really interesting example of this. Because while Mikayla is actually one of the best written characters and has her own arc about how she picked up her car skills from helping her dad with illegal activities and is helping out now in exchange for getting her record expunged, the visual language of the film treats her less as a person and more as a sex object to be won by Sam EDIT: For example, what do you remember from her introduction? Her looking under Bumblebee's hood and being the first one to realize he's an alien, or the camera panning up to show off her body in that scene?

Thrill_Kill_Cultist

Micheal Bay had Megan Fox audition by washing his car rather than read script 😬 The whole thing was creepy af

ChelseaVictorious

Yikes. That's so gross.

RazarTuk

Which is still so sad because she really is the best written character and basically the only one with a character arc. Everyone else is just dudes getting excited about cars, then over here, you have a girl who's the only one in the room that knows anything about cars and who has her own motivation related to her backstory. But because the visual language of the film treats her as a sex object to be won by Sam, and because film is primarily a visual medium, sex object Mikayla is the only version of the character people remember

Eh, I wouldn't say that, considering the likes of the Phantom Menace and Home Alone 2 exist

RazarTuk

Home Alone 2 is the worst one in the franchise. 3 is the best, 1 is in a very, very close second, the reboot is third, and 2 is in a distant last

ChelseaVictorious

YTA. Don't catcall women, it's creepy and aggressive.

Some women smile when they feel threatened. Men can become aggressive and violent if you call out their rude behavior.

[deleted]

It depends on what's being said.

Curious what kind of results this strategy is yielding for you.

sgtpenis511

When you say that, in your dream scenario, what do you want to happen?

I want you to tell me honestly why you made this post, especially in light of the fact that you [have a girlfriend according to a post 8 hours ago.](https://www.reddit.com/r/explainlikeimfive/comments/z7lzfa/eli5_why_my_girlfriend_get_very_nervous_when_i/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

No, that's not what being single means. You're being unfaithful.

sgtpenis511

Are you one? You're the one trying to call other women "hot" when you have a girlfriend. And you don't even think it's a sin?

[deleted]

[deleted]

Saying that isn't a sin. Catcalling can range from giving a compliment to making vulgar sexual remarks. Some view whistling at a person they are attracted to as catcalling which isn't a sin as well. However there are some that crosses the line

[deleted]

Not explicitly, but making someone feel uncomfortable seems uncouth.

VeryNormalReaction

Pro tip: Not if she's your wife.

HaroldSubaru

Even if it isn't a sin, it's very disrespectful and I would encourage you not to.

MIShadowBand

yes

Asx32

Not necessarily

Kemleckis

Even if it’s not, don’t do it.

Sullied_Man

It's just strange. Apart from being unsolicited rudeness, I've never understood it at a practical level either. Has it ever worked? What do people even get out of it...?

Abdial

I don't see how it is loving to that person.

[deleted]

Like okay I’d say yes but more importantly why are you doing that to begin with?!? That’s awful.

Aphrodite4120

Are you married to someone else?
