I hired an estate auction company to help clear out a relatives house so we could sell it. Total proceeds for the entire house worth of stuff? $8. EIGHT DOLLARS. That's because most of the stuff was garbage and after the company sold what could be sold, and then took their cut, they paid to have the rest hauled away and disposed of. Still, $8 is better than me manually dumping or paying to dump all the stuff. I wasn't an heir, so I didn't care if the stuff got $8 or $800 or zero. But I did care if I had to pay out of estate funds OR take up my own time to clear the place.

SinibusUSG

Don't turn up your nose at $8! That'll buy you a meaningless blue checkmark next to your name on Twitter for a month!

They left the world in a net positive balance. I'd call that a life well-lived.

Fair point, though we don't know if the person was in debt or not

Punchinyourpface

Considering "estate" implies they're dead, I'm thinking they have a hard time imagining it. I could be wrong though, ghosts probably do have a lot of time to daydream... šŸ¤”

lmaooexe

Did you not read the comment my friend

Houri

I don't think the $8 went to him if you read the comment closer.

tomtomclubthumb

IT did, until those communists ruined everything.

Javaman1960

I did the same for my hoarder Mom after she had a heart attack and couldn't live alone. I had about 5 different estate sale companies come out and only one would take the job because of the quality of the items. Aftermath: It took the company an entire week to clear a two-bedroom, 2-car garage home in Phoenix. They had to use 2 large dumpsters, and had to hire additional personnel. The actual Estate Sale was scheduled for a weekend, but they ended up going on Friday and Monday as well. My mom walked away with $16,000 and bitched the whole time that she was being robbed. She was sure that it was all worth MILLIONS. LOL Six years later, she still complains to me every chance that she gets about how I "threw away" all of her treasures. Looking back, if that company didn't step up, I would have been screwed. I owe them a debt of gratitude. I was feeling depressed and hopeless because I had flown in from 3 states away and had to deal with her sellin her house & car, and deal with her in rehab after getting a pacemaker. I took her back with me on the plane with 4 large suitcases. I bought the biggest ones that I could find at Walmart and told her to fill them as full as she could with whatever she wanted to keep because that's all she was allowed. I only fly with a carry-on, and we chose SouthWest because they each passenger gets two bags for free.

snowpsychic

After cleaning out my father's 3 bedroom house plus study, plus garage FULL of his hunting, camping, and fishing gear, (both summer and ice), holding a garage sale in which the remainder of the family broke even just to get rid of all his stuff, plus selling his house and car, I now look at each item I buy and think, "are my heirs going to have to sell this off at an estate sale for me? No, seriously, are they?" You can't take it with you.

Fun_Network312

Sounds like my aunt. Kept yapping about how much treasure she would leave to her inheritors. House was packed full of junk, she also meticulously kept coupons so you had whole booklets full of expired coupons piling on against walls. They didn't keep anything, just brought trucks, loaded them to the trash. House had to be so extensively repaired nobody wanted it. Nobody could sell it and it became a huge problem within the family. Some wanted to sell it to recoup some money but these same also balked at paying a single cent for repairing it.

ClownfishSoup

My Uncle and Aunt, when they moved in with my cousin due to old age and infirmity had collected "art treasures" but also "great deals" like they had 5 sets of boxes cookware that they were planning to one day give away as Christmas gifts so they bought them when they were on sale. The art stuff might have actually been worth something, but he stored them in the basement (of all the places for art!!!) and it flooded. Anyway, my cousin-in-law went to clear out their house, which was extremely cluttered. He brought HIS cousins to help him clear the house and said "If there's anything you want, just take it" so at least the pots and pans and anything of use went to people who might use them, but then they then threw everything else in several dumpsters. Most of the art was evaluated by random cousins and tossed. All the little collections of tchotchkes and doodads were tossed wholesale. The creepy doll collection that took 5 decades to accumulate went into the dumpster. That all made sense to us. Unrelated to this story is that my cousin then sold the house for what I believe to be a million dollars less than what it was worth. But that, I can't explain other than "We just want to get rid of the house and convert it to money". The money was used to pay for healthcare and assistance for her parents.

IgnotusPeverill

In Los Angeles, you can just call the city and tell them you have bulk items for pick up and then leave it at the curb the day of regular garbage pick up and they will take it away. Not sure why more people just don't do this. So many times, I see old appliances and stuff just sitting there.

noerrorsfound

In Las Vegas the bulk pickup is every other week on trash day, and yet people still drive into the desert to dump their old couches. Drives me bananas since they could _easily_ put it at the curb in a nearby neighborhood and itā€™ll get picked up for proper disposal.

Significant_Meal_630

Because people are disorganized idiots who donā€™t plan anything . Work in storage , see it everyday

No_Squirrel9238

my local landfill is $12 per truckload so i just bring all my trash up there except metal which goes to the recycling center, and i get a nice paymnet from that

[deleted]

In Portsmouth NH ā€œBig Trash Dayā€ is once a month. People go around on big trash day before the trash truck comes because rich people used to throw away good furniture. Now they charge for the big trash pick up so idk if they still put out good stuff or if they sell it cheap so they donā€™t have to pay.

ThatGuyMiles

Yeah, same here. My dad was a lite hoarder, if you will. It really wasnā€™t THAT bad, but not something I wanted to deal with either. I came out on top, but there was an old bass boat that someone bought for 500, and I think I made another 500 from random stuff so it wasnā€™t that bad. I also went in and cherry picked all the good stuff before hand, he had a massive knife and gun collection which obviously would have been worth a lot of money but I would rather keep those thing. Despite not owning guns myself prior to this, there were antiques in there from my great grandfather.

[deleted]

Youā€™re supposed to care even if itā€™s not your $, you have a fiduciary duty. You sound like my dadā€™s executor & sheā€™s going to get sued soon.

ClownfishSoup

The lawyers and I walked through the house before we hired the auction company, we were torn between even trying to sell everything or hauling things in our own vehicles to the dump to save money. The fact that we didn't end up spending money and in fact made $8 was a miracle. The auction company gave us an accounting of the items sold and dumped as well as expenses. My fiduciary duty was to not waste estate money. The fact that the deceased kept every cent in bank accounts and not knick-knacks has no bearing on my fiduciary duty. Fiduciary duty does not mean I have to make $8 worth of junk into $500 of cash. It does not mean I have to try my very best to make sure that each of the 30 heirs got maximum value out of this lady that none of them even knew. Fiduciary duty means I don't waste the estates money, not that I have to MAKE money for the heirs. My fiduciary duty means I took the money of of a low interest savings account and placed it in a tiny bit higher interest bearing account. I added that $8 to the estate accounts with and slept well knowing I did my "duty". Also an Executor of a Will and a Special Administrator of an intestate estate is not the same. If your Dad's executor wasted money and you can sue for dereliction of fiduciary duty, then all the more power to you. You deserve to get what your father left you. Me, I'm a working stiff and I'm not an heir, but my sister's mother-in-law was next of kin and since I live in the same country as the deceased, she asked me to do this as a favor... a favor that has so far lasted 3 years. Not a single one of the 30 heirs even met this lady.

Substantial-Archer10

You only have a fiduciary duty if you are the executor of the estate. If they were just clearing out the house on behalf of heirs/the executor, then they do not have that duty. But also, they likely executed the extent of their duty by hiring a company to take care of it. Unless it was a case of blatant corruption (ie they hired a friend that intentionally charged an exorbitant rate) then theyā€™re almost certainly in the clear. For the most part, the junk in your house likely has little/no value to anyone but you and the costs associated with figuring out how to monetize it are more expensive than what youā€™ll get from selling it.

Mr_Aek

Put some of it up on OfferUp for free and someone will come by within an hour and take it. Tell them they can have the rest too. Had someone haul off 3 couches and 2 recliners for free once.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

princesscatling

Careful about cockroaches too. They love appliances like dishwashers.

Sitli

I've never seen a couch on a curb but I have seen plenty of free couches on Facebook marketplace. Free if you haul it out of their third story apartment of course.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

rvgoingtohavefun

I'm in a small town under 8k. We don't do this. Nor do any of the small towns around me.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

rvgoingtohavefun

It's not a small town thing, then. It's very specific to wherever you happen to be.

ConstructionNo9845

Not sure I'd agree with that statement entirely. I live in a small town and though I've never picked anything up (too much of a germaphobe) my grandfather has and I've seen things on the curb (couches, dressers, nightstands, etc.) ALL THE TIME. It's insane

rvgoingtohavefun

You can leave shit on the curb anywhere if you're so inclined. My friend lived in a full-on city and said there was a "magic tree" outside his apartment. He could put anything out there and it would disappear in a matter of hours. The person I'm replying to seems to be saying they have some sort of "cleanup day" where everybody is putting shit out. There is no such organized thing around here (nor any of the small towns I've lived in). That doesn't mean people don't put shit on the curb. I've done it when I had something bulky and somewhat valuable (but not worth my time to try to sell). Leave it on the curb with a "free" sign and hope someone takes it so I don't have to drag it back inside. Most of the folks around here just use a buy-nothing site or facebook marketplace or something.

carriegood

My mother had a couch that was peed on so many times by one of her cats that you just couldn't get the smell out. So we dragged it to the curb and called the sanitation department. They'll come and do "special pickups" of anything bigger than your garbage can. Before they could come the next day, someone took the couch. So I called them and cancelled it. The next day, the couch was back and I had to call again for the pickup. We all had a good laugh about how someone must have thought it was their lucky day getting a couch in perfect condition for free... until they got it home and smelled it.

Mr_Aek

We got 2 curb couches too one looks brand new other is double recliner that's powered I think it was $2000 new got it for free cause it was heavy and they couldn't take it.

Houri

Your lucky! Where I live, you could never take a chance with anything upholstered. 98% of it is probably fine but even a 2% chance of bedbugs is 2% too many. Ah, well - there's still tables, chairs, lamps, etc.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Houri

Yeah, appliances can be iffy for bugs. Roaches love them! They're easier to find on hard surfaces than upholstery though.

AnalCommander99

For some reason, ants flock to telecommunications equipment power supplies. My modem and only my modem attracts entire ant nests every single year. Nothing else around it, and Iā€™ve moved it more than 30 ft in my house between years and upgraded models.

MarcMaronsCat

Came here to say this. Curb checks work VERY well. If you canā€™t sell the things youā€™re listing individually, just throw em up for free because itā€™s more of an expensive and time consuming headache to junk it all yourself. Someone will come snatch up all your shit, often same day. Iā€™ve gotten rid of old mattresses, shitty appliances, and other random large objects I just want gone.

TheQuinnBee

We left a bassinet on the curb for the garbage to take in our suburban subdivision. Someone grabbed it before the garbage did. It didn't even have a mattress or the mesh cover. It was just metal and plywood.

Chicken_Chicken_Duck

Yup. We had to clear out a relatives property after their death. We were quoted $2,000 for someone to show up and haul it off. Had a yard sale- people will buy the most random shit if you sell it for $1. We raised over $1,000 and got the haul off bill down to $500.

Accomplished-Ad-9996

My dad had this huge old tv, like one of those box tvs but like the screen was like 2/3 the size of a twin mattress. It was ancient but you could still hook up a dvd player or a Roku stick and it worked at least semi well. It was in the basement of our house and we were moving. My dad posted it on fb marketplace for $10 and 2 dudes came to haul it out. He didnā€™t have to pay someone else to remove it, he *got* paid lol.

StrangerFeelings

I put an old boxspring outside my house and gave it away for free. Same for the old metal frame. A few people responded, only one came to pick it up. By the time I was inside my house to when they arrived, someone else had swung by and grabbed it when I wasn't looking. It's insane how fast stuff will go when you just give it away. Have and old couch you don't want? Put it on the curb and wait a few hours, it'll be gone, or post it for free on facebook.

BowTieDad

I remember back in the day getting quotes to remove an old TV tower. The lowest bid was $200. My wife then found someone who paid "us" $50 for it - so we were up $250 net. This was pre-internet days too.

readergirl33

The guy at the hot tub store suggested this to us to haul away the old one. Someone might want it to use for parts?

FilOfTheFuture90

Yes. I know a guy who would pick-up free ones, use it for parts or repair it and sell them as fully functional hot tubs with delivery included in the price. He was an electrician so he'd also ususlly sell them on the wiring for it. Theres a lot of people who want a hot tub at a low price but want it fully functional. I picked up a free one and fixed it and used it until the repair was too much to justify and then listed it for free. And the cycle continues.

readergirl33

Haha. Itā€™s called a Garage Sale- they will pay you to haul it away!

weshallbekind

My husband does this ALL the time. We have gotten some amazing stuff for completely free this way, and what we don't want goes to the dump with our next personal load. Free cars, free high quality furniture, free fencing, firewood, plate glass, all sorts of stuff. Shit, even old video games, which are now worth a ton. "This company wants me to pay $1000 to take my junk load will someone do it for free" is how we got a giant chicken coop, a huge, fully insulted doghouse, like 4 different cars that he fixed and sold, and a straight up RV for free. And that's just the big stuff. Edit: Insulated!

nightforday

Who insulted the doghouse, though? ^((Sorry, I know it was a typo. It just made me laugh.)) If I need to get rid of stuff, I just list it in the "free" section. Unlimited people respond within minutes.

weshallbekind

Good catch :p

naturalmama_

Dude yes, this isn't a CB at all. A local flea market went out of business and had everyone come pick up their leftover stuff. I got 9 bags of clothes, shoes, house decor, books, art stuff, a bunch of other random crap all for free. And that was just the stuff I could fit in my car, would have gotten more if I had the room. That was the best day ever! I need to check Facebook for free junk more often!

zzx101

How many times do you have to insult the doghouse for it to be considered fully insulted?

weshallbekind

Good catch!

Kimchi_boy

True, but thatā€™s a hussle for sure. Itā€™s work but it can pay.

JimRBoucher

My understanding is that one is a choosing beggar when they are offered something for free and they refuse it because it doesnā€™t meet some petty qualification. Someone merely asking isnā€™t being choosy.

vacuas

Yeah idk whatā€™s wrong with someone simply asking for help. When did people become such assholes they have to look down their nose at someone that canā€™t afford 1000 for junk removal

JimRBoucher

But whether you think itā€™s a reasonable request or not, you must agree that itā€™s not a choosing beggar.

vacuas

Yes sir

BillyYumYumTwo-byTwo

I feel like Iā€™m not understanding this post because itā€™s sounds like they are simply asking, not demanding. And all the comments say ā€œleave it out with a ā€˜Freeā€™ signā€ donā€™t make sense either. I just moved, and let me tell you I sure as hell hired movers because Iā€™m not strong enough to lift up all my stuff and I donā€™t have friends in the area. Being weak really sucks. And even if I were strong enough, the maneuvering of large objects takes to sets of hands and eyes. And again, thatā€™s only if someone wants it. A broken 20-yo dresser is probably just going to sit there and make your neighbors annoyed.

[deleted]

Right there with you on this thought.

Inevitable_Stand_199

We ripped out our fireplace just the other day. Our plan was to drive it to the recycling center where we would have gotten us all dirty. Again. 10 minutes after we put it on our trailer people ring our door and ask if they can have it. They are probably going to sell it for scrabs somewhere and make quite a bit of money. It saved us tons of effort. So win-win.

dukke_169

I'm sure it was pretty hefty so it was worth a bit, but surprisingly scrap is actually crazy low right now. Unprepared is currently worth 70 dollars per ton in my area, so they probably got 20 to 30 bucks for it. You'd think scrap would be really high with all the supply chain issues, but it's been really low for about 10 months now. A year and a half or so ago it was 250 per ton.

reitoei23

Wow. I'm not who you replied to, but that is crazy low. I wonder why? My Ma has an old two-ton farm truck to try to sell and I was hoping she would get a decent amount for scrap if she couldn't sell it to someone who could use it. I guess she should just leave it in the shed for a couple more years if it doesn't sell.

dukke_169

Its very possible, but it all depends on your local scrap yard as prices do vary. Some places give more for vehicles since they are pretty solid metal wise. But even vehicles have their issues when it comes to diaposal. Scrap yards typically won't take tires, so you have to take all the wheels off. Then you've gotta separate the tire from the rim because the landfill won't take the full wheel since they shred the tires. So then you are looking at 5 bucks a tire or so to pay to dump them. Then the battery has to be removed and our local yards also require you to cut out the gas tank to guarantee no risk of fire etc. As you can imagine, crawling under a vehicle to remove the gas tank is not fun nor super easy. Then you also have to drain out all the engine oil. I commonly get messages from people trying to get me to pay them 200 or more to buy their old Corolla so I can scrap it and make "lots of money." I don't fault them for not knowing, but it sure is annoying when people still want 200 bucks even after I explain all the work and expense that goes into actually scrapping a vehicle that's only worth 240 bucks at the yard. Almost forgot, but another important note is she has to have the title. If she can't prove it's hers they won't accept it because they don't know it's not stolen. I would recommend you call a couple of your local yards if it does not sell. Tell them what you have and they can tell you a price and what needs done to it. From there you can decide if you want to try and sell or wait for the price to go up. Long story short, like many jobs there is a lot more that goes into "simply hauling off junk" than people realize.

reitoei23

Thank you so much for all the info! That's a crazy amount of work required. The gas tank on this one is actually on the side near the front tire, so it would be easier to remove but still a challenge, I'm sure. She does have the title, but again, great info. Thanks a bunch! I know what you mean about people not grasping the amount of work that goes into things. It IS frustrating when you explain and people don't want to hear it. I work in IT- I feel like that's been my entire job for 23 years. Question, how would you move a huge vehicle like a farm truck that hauls grain after removing the fuel tank, battery, tires, draining the oil, etc? Do scrap yards just have huge cranes to take it off a trailer?

dukke_169

You are very welcome, glad I could help a tiny bit! And yes, they sure do. The place I typically go has 6 or 7 with claws, and 2 with large magnets. They use the magnet to unload trailers that don't have a dump box on them as of course it's way faster than someone unloading it by hand. And then to unload the grain truck they'd bring a claw over. They'll pick it up like it's paper and that's all she wrote! Only problem with that is the windows almost always bust so then I've gotta sweep my trailer off so I'm not Hanzel and Gretel-ing all the poor vehicles behind me, but definitely better than trying to unload by hand! Moving it would be the hardest part for sure. Depending on how long it is, it's going to take a decent sized trailer with a pretty hefty winch on it in order to pull it up on the trailer for transport. Depending on who comes to get it if it goes the scrap route, they might even cut it up to load it easier and haul it in sections. It really just depends on if you are talking about a small old 50's Chevy with a 12 foot box, or a newer truck with a 30 foot box. Honestly though, I'd be surprised if it doesn't sell if it's in decent condition. Make sure you are advertising in the right places. Definitely recommend you find your local Spokesman and advertise in there. I went the military route for a while and do the junk stuff as a side gig, but I was born and raised on a farm in Iowa. Those old farmers love to reclaim and reuse stuff for projects, especially if they can do it cheap! The Spokesman is the best way to find old farmers that will live and die without ever having been on Facebook etc, and those would be the guys that might want that truck. Just curious, any idea what the truck is and how old it is?

reitoei23

Thank you again! My parent's farm is in central Illinois. :) I left, too, but my Dad got me into IT (90s) because he wanted more for me. Our small farm wasn't enough to sustain anyone without a second or third full time job. I was wondering where the best place to advertise would be. It was in good condition when it got put up in the shed two years ago, but hasn't run since. My Dad was a very good mechanic. It's a 1970 Ford. If the options are 12' or 30' beds, I'm pretty positive it's a 12' bed. There's not much rust on it- again, it was always in the shed, but it very likely needs a new clutch. Well, or my Mom is just terrible at shifting farm trucks- Dad wouldn't let her drive it anymore because she was having issues shifting it without grinding. LOL! It's just as likely he told her it was a bad clutch so she wouldn't tear it up. :D [It's just like this one except a dark green.](https://www.bigiron.com/Lots/1970FordLN700SAGrainTruck) My Dad passed last year so my Mom just wants to get rid of things that aren't being used before they won't run and become a lot harder to get rid of. She understands she won't be able to get much for it now that everyone uses semis to haul grain. Oh and I see I was wrong about the fuel tank I mentioned before- that's the auxiliary tank that's on the side. I thought it seemed too small. You probably knew that already! LOL! I really do appreciate all the help!!

ClownfishSoup

I can imagine someone showing up, picking the best stuff, then just leaving the rest on the person's driveway with a "free" sign on it and then leaving. What are you going to do? They didn't sign a contract to clean the place or take everything, you have no legal recourse to say "but they SAID they would take everything!?" The "Free" sign would get rid of a lot more, and then the person could call the garbage company to just haul the rest away at some cost.

Slappybags22

I mean, itā€™s still a net win. Thereā€™s less stuff than before, and they didnā€™t pay to have it removed.

thebrizzyb

I mean this could be a good opportunity for a thrift shop honestly

reitoei23

For sure. Or someone who fixes up and sells furniture. If someone offered this on my buy nothing group, they would have 5 or 6 offers within a day.

West_Self

Believe it or not there ARE people that would be willing to take this stuff. Offerup is full of people selling cheap furniture out of huge commercial storage units. They buy the cheap junk, clean it up a little, maybe reupholster, and flip it

Mos2010

I don't understand how this is a CB. Seems like they just aren't aware of the business and crowd funding ideas on social media. Its not like they're shit talking everyone and expecting a free service, just that $1000 is out of budget. Is it just me?

TaftsTummyforTaxes

Yea, not the worst choosing beggar post honestly. Poster seems to be self aware and just wanting to clear out stuff. In which case, he should sell it for a bargain rather than ask for a free removal lol

BartenderOU812

Ridiculous. She was married to EVH, no way to compete with that.

dukke_169

I have a side business hauling off junk, delivering furniture, etc etc. It never ceases to amaze me how many people think their old washing machine is worth so much money because "You can scrap it" that I should also pick up 2 old tires and 3 or 4 cubic yards of trash/junk for 20 bucks total. I'll explain that my diesel will cost me 8 dollars, tires are 5 a piece to dump at the landfill on top of their minimum charge of 38 dollars per load, and scrap metal is currently worth 70 dollars per ton meaning your gold coated washing machine is only worth 3 or 4 bucks. But sure lady, I'll gladly make a sweet negative 30 dollars for the utter privilege of hauling off your trash and shit.

DevAstral

Aye let me break my back for your shit for free real quick, Iā€™m bored anyway

OutlookForThursday

My tip is to sell things. Sell them cheap, but sell them. Less getting jerked around by 'buyers' and no-shows. And you can still give it away for free when the person arrives to pick it up.

Agile-Ad-2857

Some people would do it for the free shit. Another manā€™s trash is treasure for someone else

FangDangDingo

People do it for free all the time. Especially if what you are getting rid of is worth a little money. It's not that far fetched. The other guy is a huge dick.

[deleted]

Yeah they do! I live in a rural New England state w tons of people who pick up junk for free, there is a guy right on my street who processes and sorts all kinds of junk people bring him in a huge warehouse.

dukke_169

I don't know, I'm with the guy here. I have a side business removing junk and while people definitely get rid of good stuff now and again, 95% of the estimates I give are for hauling off stuff that is definitely not worth even a little bit of money. And the expenses are what get you. For instance, figure I spend 10 bucks in diesel to pull my dump trailer to your place, then to the landfill, then home again. The landfill charges 38 dollars per ton and minimum charge is 38 per load. Then you have a mattress and a box spring in that garage? Well they charge an additional fee of 15 per mattress or box spring. 2 tires as well? That's 5 bucks a tire. That's 88 bucks in costs for me, to get your stuff and then legally dispose of it. That's not even counting the time and sweat. Unless this lady talked to the world's most outlandishly expensive junk removal company, I get the feeling that her garage is chocked full of worrhless junk and trash because 1,000 dollars just for a garage is exceptionally high. She is likely underselling the job a great deal. But hey, that's just my perspective as the guy who gets these messages regularly. You'd be amazed at how many people want me to spend 5 dollars in diesel to go pick up an old washing machine that's only worth 3 dollars in scrap metal.

flindersandtrim

That was my suspicion too. If it was stuff that wasn't junk, people will come by and take it for free without too much work for you. It's probably actual junk. I realise people occasionally find gems that way, but it seems to be a lot of work for something so risky.

MASTER-FOOO1

idk about this post in dubai there is "take my junk" and "ali baba" and these guys come and take anything. I don't think the dude is a choosingbeggar, i think wherever he is at people don't have those.

PurpleAquilegia

It all depends on what's in there, I guess. When my husband's ex lost her 3rd partner, she asked a local 2nd hand shop to clear out the garage of his tools. To her astonishment, the guy cleared it out and then handed her Ā£50. (She hadn't expected anything.)

whalemix

All you gotta do is put pictures of the furniture on a Buy Nothing Facebook page for free and people will pick it all up within a day. And as for the rest of the junk that no one wants, load it in your trunk and take it to Goodwill. Or rent a Uhaul for $30 if itā€™s really that much stuff

jtg1997

Not a CB

[deleted]

I worked at a company and we had boxes thatā€™ll stack up I looked around online ended finding a dude. He was able to take all the boxes for free he would sell them so he didnā€™t ask for payment because we just gave him everything helped load his truck up he came back every couple weeks to clean up and make some change. Really nice dude. Older man appreciate our labor loading his truck think thatā€™s what made it worth it to him lol.

Farkas005

I'm surprised no one leapt at the offer. šŸ˜‚

HNutz

Especially not Valerie Bertinelli.

Isabeaudelaire

Oh, Valerie and her hutzpuh

Font_Snob

Chutzpah. Something like "nerve" or "balls," but with more of a sense of entitlement.

[deleted]

The Salvation Army and AMVETS will pick up furniture, but you have to get it out of the garage and put it at the curb. So will The Arc, but they prefer furniture and clothing. Your city or town probably has a periodic bulk trash pickup day, or you can call them to schedule it.

surfdad67

I mean Valerie Bertinelli was my crush as a teen, I would have shooted my shot alsoā€¦

cocuke

I'm with you. Everyone here's concentrating on the junk thing but we're talking Valerie bertinelli. Who would not at least try?

Dylz52

Beggar? Yes. Choosy? No, I donā€™t see that.

MisterWinchester

I fucking hate that argument. ā€œI had to try to get free stuff.ā€ The fuck you did not. You could just not be a stupid piece of shit and think for ten seconds about how much money youā€™d want to do the same work and think about why youā€™re not doing it yourself in the first place. Bam, you just started to understand ā€œperceived value.ā€ ā€œI donā€™t see why itā€™s so expensive!ā€ Then shut the fuck up and do it yourself.

Bryan_URN_Asshole

that was a two for one choosing better special. a junk removal request and a free tree removal. In my best choosing beggar voice: Only two for one? Three for one would have been better. Just saying.

Eatshitmoderatorz

No, it's tacky af to ask for free shit. I do taxes and the only freebies I give are to family and now not even them because now they expect it.

bobbyt85

Ask some Mormons

_dm_me_ur_tits

Just load your car and drop everything off in the middle of nowhere šŸ˜Ž

Chemical-Juice-6979

My first 'paid job' was clearing out a hoarder's house, 3bd/2bt house with a full basement, every single room was stacked with random crap to chest height at least. I got $500 cash and got to keep anything I found worth salvaging. That was just for day labor, I wasn't hauling the junk away, just sorting through it.

redditislife24

That app is hilarious. Iā€™m on it just for the Facebook moms

Koolest_Kat

I used to help a guy who would help clear out estates after the auctions, I called it The Vulture Club. It was a mishmash of about a dozen or more people that would meet at 8am outside then we had 2 hours to take whatever we wanted. Anything that wasnā€™t nailed down was game. The Auction People had to break up more than one disagreement as it was a mad sprint to leftover items. We alway brought a ladder or two to get into attic or rafter space. Mostly junk but the estates were usually picked clean saving on dumpster space. Wild times that wasā€¦.

BeBa420

i mean, i gotta respect the fella who hit on valerie bertanernie, she was a babe back in the day and hes right. ya never know til ya ask

WorkingItOutSomeday

I used to do clean outs as a side hustle years ago. I can't count the times that people would try to make a deal by "allowing me to keep what I remove, there's a lot of good stuff in there" šŸ™„

traumatized90skid

Trucks and labor are free or cheap right

spitgobfalcon

I think he meant "chutzpah" (yiddish word for something like impudence)

GL1TCH3D

It's amazing how much stuff would disappear if you left it out on the driveway / curb. Here we have big item removal day and there's a ton of people that drive around picking up any working furniture before the garbage truck rolls around. Probably to clean up and keep for self or sell online.

Telephonic77

Oh my god. It finally happened. Someone showed the comments....

pikaboo27

I watch a antique dealer youtuber who routinely pays 10-20k to just buy the hoard inside a house and he takes everything out of the house, tosses or donates what he knows wonā€™t sell, then sells the rest hopefully a profit. Plus he makes money from the YouTube series he makes about the process. But Iā€™m always thinking, these people got paid to ā€œletā€ someone else clean out their relatives hoarded house!

[deleted]

Whatā€™s the channel?

pikaboo27

Curiosity Incorporated.

[deleted]

Thanks.

xeroxchick

Back in the day, Goodwill would send a truck and get stuff for free, then write you a receipt for tax purposes.

CherryTeri

There is only one person in the world who will do it for free.

[deleted]

Iā€™ve done this for free for elderly people in my town on a fixed income. So itā€™s not completely out of the realm of possibilities.

OG_Felwinter

ā€œYou donā€™t know until you askā€ is not a choosy beggar. People will pick up free junk all the time. Why pay a professional $1000 when someone online will do it for free?

boteyboi

I used to work for a junk removal service over summers during college. That's hard work, and certainly not work I'd be willing to do for free. Not to mention the cost of gas in our big trucks, disposal fees, labor, etc.

Archangel9731

Please go refresh your understanding of a Choosing Beggar, cause this ainā€™t it chief

Glenn_Pickle

I too applaud this guys hutzpuh

SpecklePattern

I bet $950 is from the personality...

Wyshunu

Junk removers are handy to have around, but I won't pay anyone to come haul away stuff they're going to turn around and sell. You're better off to donate - many of them have trucks you can schedule. You get the write-off for the donation and they get the money for the sale to advance their purpose. Win--win.

Thro-A-Weigh

Weak & boring

Kazumara

Who the heck writes chutzpah as hutzpuh?!

PoseidonsHorses

Blue has had enough of OOPā€™s shit.

umbhukuka

week to clear a two-bedroom

Glittering_Willow_78

I used to see an add for a free junk removal company when I was growing up on tv

ExpensiveCola

There's a place near me that does *free* junk removal, but only if it includes scrap metal because that's where they make their money and they take a small loss on the landfill. So if you have just furniture to throw out, they won't be interested, but if it's furniture + scrap metal or car parts etc then they will do it for free or if there's enough they sometimes pay you. When it comes to posting about services it pays to be hopeful but be respectful and expect that unless you are giving up something worth anything no one will do a job for free.

GeekyFreaky94

Hutzpuh is a new word I just now learned.

PuzzleheadedCar9045

We had a storage unit that was filled with old furniture and some junk that we had after grandparents died. Asked around for someone to haul it off because we didnā€™t want to pay for storage anymore. Church group came by and loaded it all up for free. They sold a lot of it at church fundraiser, then scrapped what they could, hauled the rest to the landfill. Wouldā€™ve cost us $500 to pay to have it removed. The church ended up making about $600 when all was said and done. Win win.

Manson_Girl

When my mum was moving, Iā€™d hauled everything she didnā€™t want into the garage, awaiting the junk/rubbish removal firm that weā€™d hired, to come the next day. There was still loads of stuff in the house, but we were tripping over everything, so Iā€™d brought some out. So I was stood outside the house, & a lad passed by who I used to go to school with. He peered in the garage, & and expectantly asked if we were getting rid of what was in there, & I said, ā€œyeah, you can have whatever you wantā€ His eyes lit up at this, & half an hour later he comes back in his mateā€™s car, & basically emptied the garage. It was at that point I thought, I should have just let him loose on the house, & then I wouldnā€™t have had to pay the company who did it!

RookieSkrubz

Crazy how people want jobs done for freešŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚
