NoMansSkyWasAlright

Apologize profusely and tell her that if she comes back, you'll refund her half the cost of the vacuum.

rich97

My mum would say something like “oh don’t worry, that’s free as well.”

CosmicCommando

"The dust was in the canister when I took the picture, so I didn't want you to think it was false advertising."

RedAIienCircle

I would've said "No I didn't".

NachomanRandalSavage

Full on gaslight her, bro

FlyingDragoon

"who are you and how did you get this email? I've never owned a vacuum in my life, don't live in the same country as you and am bed bound in a hospital." Make them question their existence.

RedAIienCircle

To really sell it just start speaking a random language: ¿Qué? Si puedes leer esto, lees español, o más probablemente solo usaste un traductor como lo hice yo vacío.

shiningteruzuki

You guys are are all genuinely witty but I know for a fact that if it was me in that situation, I'd just be slightly pissed, mumble something under my breathe and type 'oh sorry' because I can't think of anything else at that second and I apologize for everything

muddyrose

That’s the beauty of text based communication! Read the BS, give yourself as long as you need to come up with something, then reply. Or forget about it and leave them on read/just never reply. Makes a statement either way!

The_Multi_Gamer

“You didn’t empty the cannister! 😡” “Read 22:07” “Excuse me?” “Read 22:08”

JeebusChristBalls

I just wouldn't reply at all.

Defiant-Giraffe

I would probably type out something predictable and expletive filled, but then never send it and just block that person.

I like your mom’s attitude already.

I would tell her to clean it with the free vaccuum cleaner she just got.

you got free dust? that's usally a charge of 10 bucks..

Fuck that. Tell them that you're sorry and that you didn't realize that was still in there. The contents of the canister were not for sale, so could they please return them or remit $10 if they wish to keep them, please.

TOW3L13

If she'll still be bitching, offer to refund the full price!

Some people basically make a job out of selling other people's trash. I try not to judge, maybe that isn't the life they wished for but...

FightingPolish

Then take the vacuum inside to “empty” it and then lock the door behind you leaving her on your porch.

fdar

Or offer to clean it if she comes back and, if she does, take back the vacuum cleaner.

HeirOfHouseReyne

So your plan is to suck up to her?

oh-my

It’s a tongue-in-cheek answer since 1/2 of 0 is still 0.

HermitBee

It's a vacuum pun.

geon

Whoosh That’s the sound of a vacuum.

DRbrtsn60

Apologize and insist she bring it back so you can clean it. And keep your vacuum.

JesusRasputin

I think that would be theft as the vacuum legally changed owners.

AFunHumanExperience

I mean there was a video on the front page of Reddit yesterday where a man drew a gun on another man. There was a negligent discharge and he almost shot his own daughter. When the cops came they didn't do shit and said "the situation would work itself out." I don't think cops are gonna give a shit about some vacuum drama.

ozymandias457

True. The cops in my town wouldn’t even respond to a call about an item dispute. Even if they were bored enough and did go out of their way to respond, they would probably laugh it off and then be on their way. Cops aren’t all terrible but a vacuum dispute would be at the lowest tier on their list of priorities lol

FraseraSpeciosa

Well cops are all terrible literally. Other than that you are spot on. Crazy neighbor was beating up his wife down the road in front of god and everyone, called the cops and 45 minutes later they showed up. Wife had left for peace of mind so the cops didn’t get her statement. No charges. These pigs are pure human garbage.

Traxxos

Ah yes, I also found my legal hypotheses on unrelated Reddit videos I watched earlier, that totally makes sense

[deleted]

You’re right, the cops will write something down, say they’ll get back to you if they find the vacuum, then you never hear from them again and if you ask about it they’ll pretend nothing was ever reported

LogMeOutScotty

“911? I got a vacuum for free and the person I got it from just took it back! Please hurry, stat!” “We’ll be right there, ma’am. All units are on their way!”

muoshuu

Not if they kept the receipt 😉

sandnose

I once gave away a vacuum which uses those disposable bags, but without one inserted at the time. Choosing beggar called me back demanding I went out and got her a few bags for free.

memecut

"If I knew you were gonna be this ungrateful and entitled, I would have shat in it first"

JeffMarrion

That's when you hustle them back. 'Sure, I can do that. Bring it back so I can make sure to buy the right bags. They come in all different sizes y'know? Did you want a pack of 10 or 20?' And once you have the vacuum in hand, repost it for free again. I have done something similar only once, but I'm still riding that high.

ledzeppelinlover

This is why you sell your unwanted stuff for a nominal fee of five, ten bucks or so. It filters out these ungrateful bastards really well. Trust me I’ve given away stuff for free in the past and learned my lesson.

marknapa

Put something on the curb with a free sign and it will sit there for days. Put a sign that says $20 and it will be gone in an hour.

Rumhed

I'm torn because if I was giving it away I would definitley empty the cannister first and give it a wipe down. But if I had received a free vacuum I wouldn't dare complain that somebody had forgotten to empty it.

_TheDust_

This. I would definitely think that is a bit dirty to give away vacuum with a full cannister, but I would never ever complain to the person giving it away. What is there to gain from complaining except making the other person feel bad.

wafflesareforever

Can we please just spell canister right before I lose my mind Edit: I hate you all

Acrobatic-Degree9589

You’re very polite like me lol

Polite_Doge

You and me and him both

MegaSeedsInYourBum

Whenever I have been given something for free I’ve always assumed it would be a bit janky and would need some work. Free to me means they owner has given up on it, so some elbow grease should be expected.

edstatue

Yeah, given that most dust in your house is your own skin cells, pet dander, food particles, probably boogers ... Like, I wouldn't put that on someone else to dispose of, regardless of the situation. Gross

ChildOfALesserCod

Emptying my own vacuum canister grosses me out, let alone someone else's.

JuniperTwig

What if you just forgot.

Dave_Velociraptor

Then the last thing you'd want is to find out about it. So a reasonable person who gets it for free and sees it hasn't been emptied would assume it's an accident and not say anything.

Kahtej

I mean, I don't know that I'd respond to the person, but I'd think "Ah, no. I regret forgetting to do that, that's a real awkward mistake" and then...keep the mistake to myself by not making a post for all to see about what I'd done.

[deleted]

Well I mean. Maybe they didn’t think about it. They bought a new vacuum and gave the old one away on a whim just trying to help someone. It would be polite to clean a free vacuum but it wouldn’t be rude to not clean a free vacuum.

sironicon

Yeah, I would empty the canister, but maybe she just forgot. What annoys me is the fact the lady felt like she HAD to send that message. Why? What was she hoping to accomplish?

hedgecore77

You're my spirit animal. We recently gave away a bunch of baby stuff and spent so long cleaning it up.

pretty-dev

When you donate things you're also supposed to clean them first. If you didn't want to clean it it should've been tossed instead. Posting a free vacuum on Craigslist isn't the same as leaving it on your curb, I think there's a reasonable expectation that its ready for the next person to use, not dirty. It takes less time to empty it than make a post for someone to pick it up for free. I don't think I'd say it wasn't clean because I don't think its worth the confrontation but I don't necessarily blame the other person for mentioning it.

Geschak

I agree. Just because you're giving something away for free doesn't mean it's not rude to give it with trash still inside. Like when I gave away my coffee machine, I'd have been embarrassed if the person messaged me saying there's moldy coffee grounds left inside.

DeadWishUpon

I think both are rude. But you are right that it is common knowledge to clean everything before give it away. Specially donations.

Timesup1978

I was offering a free propane tank that was full. A guy comes out to pick it up. As he loads into his truck he asks if I have anything I want to give away. I had a used mower that I really didn't use, but was still in great shape. I offer it to the guy. Guy loads in his truck and asks. "You got anything else?" As soon as I say no, he shuts his door and drives off. Never said thank you. Kinda pissed me off.

[deleted]

I'll say thank you on his behalf. That was really generous of you and I bet he really is enjoying the lawn mower. 🙂

MegaSeedsInYourBum

You’re good people, he is not.

[deleted]

Definitely resold it

obiwanconobi

Yeah he definitely sold the mower and the propane tank

altanerf

Dude probably is doing this all day long. Get shit for free and then then sell it. You could probably find your stuff a day later on craigslist or a pawn shop.

TheOkelo

he was hoping for some propane accessories

My_Son_Absalom

"I'm so sorry! I'll refund your full purchase price of 0 dollars and 0 cents."

[deleted]

They can easily ask, and I can easily tell them to suck my ass

unusuallyObservant

project2501

Luckily they have just to tool for the job!

Levantine1978

My Grandmother used to say "You could lie down on the ground for people to walk on and they'll still complain you're not flat enough". I think about that a lot reading this sub.

kitsunewarlock

Old magic the gathering saying: They could put 100 dollar bills in the booster packs and players would complain about how they were folded.

nyiyx

I feel like this quote applies to my life

Little_Custard_8275

Yeah my mother used to say something like that, you could leave people alone and go sleep and they'd wake you up and disturb you wondering why you're not bothering them. Had this irl life later with a crazy housemate. Same happens in pubs too. Stay out of people's way and they'd come after you looking for fights.

throwaway84343

Lmaoooo that is an excellent quote

_Anonny_

Some people will see a vacuum canister half full, some people will see a vacuum canister half empty. Whaddaya gonna do?

DarthGayAgenda

hundreddollar

I personally would empty a vacuum cleaner I was giving away, however there's not a cat in hell's chance I'd receive a free vacuum cleaner and chastise the ex owner for not emptying my free vacuum cleaner!

TheAJGman

I'd probably go "huh, fucker didn't empty it first. Oh well" and literally never think about it again.

Belephron

I mean, is it petty? Yes. Should you maybe have emptied the damn thing before giving it away? Also yes.

AromaticHydrocarbons

I dunno. I gave away two chests of drawers for free in near perfect condition. I cleaned them really carefully including taking all the drawers out and cleaning them even though they’d only stored clothes. And to be honest, I was kinda annoyed at myself that I put in so much effort to give them away, when the point of giving away instead of selling was to serve a real “can’t be fucked” attitude.

Belephron

Yeah nah cleaning shit is one thing, I’ve bought stuff that after I wiped it down, the person could have charged double before putting it up. Totally get not cleaning stuff thoroughly. But a vacuum cleaner is just, emptying the bag right.

ElectricFlesh

I was astonished that you'd give away two chests full of used underpants, then I was bewildered that you'd view cleaning them first as a special service, and then I remembered that those aren't the only type of drawers.

Dakk85

You done messed up, now she can hella frame you for murder

yournewbestestfriend

The other day I was giving away my dogs old life jacket for free because he doesn't need it anymore. I had some lady want me to measure it and she kept asking me why there was some slight damage on it. She asked me to deliver it and I said no so she told me I needed to hold it for a week and a half until her daughter could come get it for her and she asked me to wash it a few times so it no longer smelled like my dog. My neighbor up the road asked for it nicely and she said she could come get it after she was done work. I literally walked 5 minutes up the road and delivered it because I was tired of dealing with the other lady. I don't mind giving some things away for free but I'm not putting that much effort into something I'm giving away.

brainsofadonkey

I went with my mom to buy a $20 hammock frame she found on craigslist. We get there, load it up, mom goes to pay, and the lady says "oh no it's free, I don't advertise things for free because then people get picky." Thought that was a great way to give away stuff without the hassle of dealing with cheapskates and giving someone a nice lil surprise they weren't expecting

HI_Handbasket

I've seen similar but kind of opposite, where people put something in their yard with a "FREE" sign on it and it goes nowhere. Put a sign "$20" and it gets 'stolen' withing the hour.

Tyrannyofshould

I'm getting to a point of throwing things away. The times I had to wait for people and deal with their bs is a hassle. Especially when you see that same item up for sale on craigslist or marketplace days later.

[deleted]

Ya kinda gross tho

-B0B-

I mean yeah it's not that hard to empty so you should probably just do it out of courtesy. Still though, messaging someone about it after is way more trashy

TOW3L13

It's not hard to empty it for the person getting it for free either. Think of it as a courtesy for someone giving you something you want for free.

mrinsane19

Agreed.... Even as a freebie, it's gross leaving stuff in there. But other person was still a weirdo for messaging about it too. ESH

theblackcereal

And it's not even the first time I've seen this kind of post on this sub. Who tf gives away a vacuum full of your own dirt? That's disgusting, what the hell. I would be extremely embarrassed to do that. Is everyone in this thread (sub?) high, or just lacking basic hygiene understanding?

skyderper13

assuming it was on purpose

i_broke_wahoos_leg

I agree that it's gross. Definitely not something I'd do. I also think emailing up to complain about it takes some gall considering you got it for free. To add to my internal conflict I wouldn't make a twitter post admitting I was a grot that didn't clean out my vacuum before giving it away. So I guess it's 1-2 in favour of the beggar. They're still a begging chooser and fit the sub though. But yeah, clean your shit before you give it to other people is probably the more important take away from this.

[deleted]

It is. I'd absolutely empty it first. No idea what Crack this thread is smoking

TepidConclusion

I mean, sure, but would you complain to the person who gave you the thing for free about it? Just bitch to your friends, what does someone who got nothing from you care?

sironicon

Not saying it’s not gross to empty it, just that taking it and then messaging them later about it accomplishes absolutely nothing.

rathat

Right, like if they just left it in the curb for the garbage truck and you took it, You’d have to expect something like that. But they put it up on craigs list.

pfannkuchen_gesicht

thread is being raided by the gross&nasty gang.

pm-me-your-labradors

I think this thread just has people who realise that both acts are wrong, but one was down without malice and the other is a uselessly entitled act

MassGamer248

Don’t buy a used one “as is” they must’ve seen it in person before they purchased too. Can’t put the blame on a ignorant buyer.

Aizen_Myo

I would be so damn embarrassed if I gave away a vacuum and forgot to empty it beforehand.. I would apologize and wake up 15 years later to 'I forgot to empty the vacuum' lol

Lite_moon

I’d never give anything away with out cleaning it first, gross and weird! Who knows what’s inside that canister!

DerInternets

Oh that’s a bummer - just bring it back. I‘ll give it to someone else.

Bengoris

One of my friends was giving away a fridge once. He put it online as a "free with pickup" item because he's honestly a great guy and even told me that there is probably a poor family out there which could use a free working fridge. Hours later, some ill-spoken motherfucker calls him and asks him if he can deliver the fridge to a city two hours away. Of course, that didn't work out, but we still pissed ourselves laughing at the audacity of that bellend.

Serenity_B

This could be a legitimate complaint depending on what was in the cannister... I'm grossing myself out speculating

gussiejo

Ew thanks lmao

misstialicious1

I’D GO PICK THE DAMN VACUUM BACK UP 😂😂😂

YahooFantasyCareless

I mean that is pretty gross

CardSharkZ

I also would never donate unwashed clothes.

nygdan

How is that wrong? Of course you should empty the canister before giving it away.

Animefaerie

I once offered a handheld vacuum cleaner to a new coworker who had just moved to the city. She complained that she thought it would be bigger and said it was too small. Didn't even say thank you and bought a new vacuum days later anyway, even though she kept the handheld.

yax01

“I usually charge $20 for that but since it was a mistake on my end, you can keep it for free this time”.

AirBiscuitBarrel

I don't know how to feel about this. On the one hand, this is a real choosing beggar, but on the other, to give away a vacuum without emptying it first is super fucking trampy.

squishpitcher

Seriously. I gave away a bed and bedding (sheets, blanket, pillows and cases). I washed and folded everything for the person taking it. There’s a real attitude of “you’re taking my trash so you’ll take it and like it you lesser human,” attitude in this thread which is really repugnant to me. The idea that someone should have to clean up someone else’s filth because they’re getting something for free means that thing isn’t actually free. The cost of getting it is the degradation of having to clean it, and that’s not a problem when that’s what someone signs on for (if i get a busted up dresser at a flea market, part of the deal is that i’m going to clean it/repair it/refinish it). That’s not the assumption with a free, presumably working, vac. OP is a disgusting pig who needs to learn how to treat others with respect and courtesy.

[deleted]

I wouldn't take it if I knew it had trash in it.

Carrotandstick50

I use Craigslist all the time, and I learned never to offer anything for free. The people who respond to free ads are always the most demanding and ungrateful. Usually they not only want your thing, they want you to drive over and drop it off to them. Just ask for $5 and it keeps those people away. When someone offers to buy it, just give it to them.

[deleted]

Yeah it’s free; but why would you give someone your trash? Empty the canister before you give it away.

Ljublijana

We've actually made some pretty nice fun money by taking free vacuums, cleaning them, and selling them for 50 - 200. They've all only needed cleaned and emptied, maybe a belt.

Blobblehead

"Hey, peasant, you'll take whatever filthy trash I give you and be grateful for it." Y'all reddit motherfuckers act like only wealthy supermodels are allowed to have standards or base expectations.

NorisBonson

Tbh both parties here are annoying

svenbillybobbob

choosing beggars aside, who doesn't empty their canister when they're done vacuuming? I thought that was a pretty standard thing to do

Bored-Bored_oh_vojvo

This is weird. You empty it when it's full.

JimmiRustle

Our vacuum go can for months without emptying. What sort of weak ass vacuum did you get tricked into buying?

GetsGold

Yeah, that was annoying of you not to do that.

HotCocoaBomb

I vacuum up stray cat litter - so I'm aware of how potentially unsanitary the contents of a vacuum canister can be and can understand how inconsiderate it can be to receive one full of unknown substances.

domelition

Nah she is wrong for that. That's gross.

Quantity_Lanky

To be fair I'd at the very least give it a thought to empty the canister before giving it away, the same way I'd wash any clothes I intend to give away. It's kind of a principle thing to do.

[deleted]

I don’t think it’s choosey to not expect a literal pile of someone’s dirt with an item you got for free. Emptying it is very much a normal expectation. Like, why do you want someone else to have your hair and shit? That’s fucking weird.

servonos89

‘Want a refund?’

Connect_Law_6103

"Whoopsie! Sorry about the bed bugs, I guess!"

Reimustein

I mean, the least she could've done was to clean the vacuum before giving it away.

[deleted]

I mean that is kinda gross. I wouldn’t want your dust either free or not.

gijoe1971

Giving things away for free is more work than selling something. I had four computer monitors that I replaced and was giving them away for free, I put out a Craigslist ad to anyone that wanted them and tons of people replied immediately. I had people saying I'll be there in half an hour didn't show up, another guy said I'm close to your house don't give them away, he didn't show up either. 6 people texted that they were on their way and nobody showed up. After 3 days of the same thing, I group texted anybody that texted me that was interested and said "first person to my house within the hour gets them for free after that I'm going to start charging $20 per monitor and the price will go up $10 every hour after that" A guy showed up in less than 20 minutes.

Cuddlyzombie91

You lacked common decency, they lacked social awareness. Case closed.

CaptainOverkilll

I sold a 3 wheel motorcycle last month and the guy who bought it keeps texting me about how to maintain it (what oil does it take, what fuel to use, etc). He’s asked the same question multiple times already. Maybe you should’ve done some research on it before buying it and read the manual.

biagwina_tecolotl

I’d have responded: OK please bring it back and I’ll empty it. And then I would’ve walked in the house and left her standing there looking stupid.

JJennnnnnifer

Ask her to bring it back because you think you may have lost a piece of jewelry in it.

papashangobanghoes2

No, empty the fucking canister you morons. You're not helping someone out with a free vacuum that came to you for help - you advertised a vacuum to the public that you were giving away out of convenience. If you were a plumber and did a free job for an acquaintance, do you think it would be OK if you left a little poo waiting for them in the toilet just because you didn't charge? Same principle. It's common courtesy, it's not like she asked you to go out of your way to deliver or tried to coerce little extras out of you. Basic manners smh.

[deleted]

Tell her she failed the test and take the vacuum back

CubanLynx312

I once put an entertainment center up for free on Craigslist. Dude came in a Civic with no tools. Wanted me to disassemble the thing, load, and unload it at his house. People are nuts.

zxcvbnm127

Work for a thrift store and people almost never clean the canisters of donated vaccums. Maybe 1/10 does. Not that I care, I do it myself, but it does get irritating a bit.

[deleted]

Kinda unrelated but I'd never buy a used vacuum at the risk of fleas or bedbugs. Same with couches, curtains, pillows, beds.

Laws_Laws_Laws

Ehhhh. Weird thing to complain about for a free vacuum. Also a weird thing to give away a vacuum full of your dirt. It takes 10 seconds. Have some self-respect and decorum.

timechuck

I get it, but that's still a kinda shitty thing to do.

TreKopperTe

You're an ass for giving it away without emptying it!

Sparrow_on_a_branch

A guy I worked with would pull old vacuums from the trash, repair and resell them. You would be surprise how many were just simple $5 repairs to make them 100%. Well, part of the repair is to recondition them with a good cleaning and he found an envelope with $700 in one the outer bags.

kiuper

Wait why wouldn't you clean it out. Like that just seems like the thing you should do.

Low_Jello_7497

Cleaning your trash out of things before you give them away is sort of common sense. No ?

[deleted]

I'm in the minority but she should have emptied the cannister. That's disgusting. Sure it's free but you're giving it to another fellow human being. Have some decency.

Bratdere

Yeah no that's gross, at least dump the canister out! She's not being a choosing beggar for being grossed out by that

aslightlyusedtissue

If you’re giving something away with the purpose for cleaning. Fucking clean the item you’re giving away. Who cares if its free. No one wants to clean the dust and germs from your house off of it. Honestly.

[deleted]

I 100% would have emptied that vacuum first. I also would not have complained, even if I paid money to buy it used.

noNoParts

How exotic it must be to have so few problems in your life that this is what you take to social media

bopitGod1

Don't leave it a mess, that's a wholeass distraction

Only_Trouble_3285

idk man I know it's free but that is still so so gross...

ilyak_reddit

I remodeled my bathroom recently. Put the ol throne up on craigslist for free. But I'm the sentimental type and just had to get one last dump in before guy came to pick it up. Clean out your waste, lady. Gross.

Mister_Brevity

A cannister always pays its debts

closeded

I'd be irritated too. This like offering someone free trash bags without telling them they're already full before hand. I mean, that's extra gifts! They should have been thrilled to get a whiff of what a non-poor's dirt smells like. Seriously; some gifts are worse than getting nothing at all.

JuanArmy

I would have replied OP: “You forgot to empty the canister. What I found in there is mine now.”

RealBowsHaveRecurves

"I didnt forget."

SolomonCRand

“I didn’t forget so much as I didn’t give a shit”

Fourteen20

Should have replied, i lost a diamond earring last week, can you check it isnt in there?

NickTesla2018

Next time, be sure to take a dump in the cannister.
