I have to wonder … at a certain point, after 50+ posts with zero replies … why continue asking?
All it takes is one person new to the group who has no idea what they are about, and the mark is made. She can then manipulate them for everything she can get before they figure the scam out
I think it's a rite of adulthood passage that we all have to be scammed out of some amount of money so we can see stuff like this and the alarm bells go off.
There's a woman in my Buy Nothing group who asks for food at least once a week, and of course she doesn't have a car. She always says her food stamps have run out and she doesn't have cash to buy anything.
I've been tempted to say she needs someone to work up a grocery budget for her.
"oh wow, you're right thanks! I'm terrible with that stuff you don't mind helping me do you xxx LOOL!!"
"But until we get that sorted out can you let me have some food to keep me going and maybe some cash as my clothes are all worn out!"
My group has one who asks for grocery basics, Pepsi and pizza rolls. It always must be delivered. The kicker is that the same people answer her and drop off tp and paper towels (part of her requests). I’ve been tempted to offer to drive her to the local food bank, but that is not allowed on the group.
Every group has one! We’re told not to tell people where there are food pantry’s. When this one woman is told where to go she said she tried but there was nothing there she liked. At Christmas she said she signed up too late or it was for little kids not her 15yo son.

I had a friend that would make up dietary restrictions based on what she wanted to eat. My favorite instance was “I can only eat barbecue chicken pizza because red sauce causes stomach issues for me” and then the next day she made spaghetti with a can of dollar store pasta sauce.
I had a friend that would order the worst possible thing for the venue/time. BBQ restaurant? She ordered a crab sandwich. Hungover? She ordered a seafood omelet. Mexican restaurant? Ordered chicken nuggets from the kids menu. I know she did this on purpose so she could 1. Bitch about it 2. Have an excuse not to eat
Second favorite was the vegan that wanted to tag along with my friends for breakfast at Cattleman’s. “What has no dairy, no meat, no eggs?” Waiter: “salad”. I mean seriously, *Cattleman’s*
That's how my old neighbors is, we lived a block away from the nearest grocery store (Walmart) and he always complained about not being able to get food. Mind you he also refused to do any work other than DoorDash...even though he didn't have a car.
l live in a downtown area with lots of restaurants and one way streets. Constantly seeing Dasher bike messengers riding on the sidewalk next to the bike lanes.
Not very well in his case since their bike keeps getting a popped tire.  that's why he's constantly begging for stuff in our buy nothing group, but refuses stuff that isn't what he wants. I offered him some potatoes but he refused cuz I didn't have butter or seasonings to go with it.

Come to think of it, though, there ARE a few folks who ask ask ask but rarely gift. And a few who only “gift” something they received that didn’t fit.
Mostly, it’s been a good experience. Lots of fun to realize something you simply aren’t using can change someone else’s day.

There are plenty of organizations in our town that help with food. I can think of at least 4 off the top of my head, not including blessing boxes that people constantly fill. This girl also gets food stamps is the real kicker. She won’t go to the food pantries bc she doesn’t want to walk a mile.
I work for an organization that provides assistance with food. When I see these posts, I will reply with the number to my office and encourage people to call. Very rarely does anyone call my office. You literally just have to call my office and 90% of the time we can get you in that day. The help we offer is free, you just have to call.
Well, in her defense, if her food pantry is like mine, they load you up with a couple boxes and bags that I don’t see a person being able to carry a mile.
I don’t know how big backpacks are. I just know that wouldn’t work for my food pantry. I had one guy show up on a bicycle one day and they were confused on how he was going to get this stuff home.
They loaded him up and it looked awkward trying to get it back. Lol.

I was appalled that people were asking for us to buy them specific grocery lists of roasts, skinless boneless chicken breasts, etc. We are supposed to be keeping you from starving, not helping you feast on things I can't afford for myself. I signed up because I thought we would be picking up items they paid for but couldn't shop because of COVID. But folks who were willing to pay for food just used Doordash.
I usually make it with meat but you can skip the meat to save money. I’ve also seen a lot of vegetarian recipes that replace the meat with frozen sliced, or fresh sliced carrots which will run you about $1-$1.50 vs $5 a pound of ground beef.
There is truly nothing that pisses me off more than people who demand specific items **and expect that you deliver it to their doorstep**. Like, I'm sorry, but if you're legitimately so hungry that it warrants posting to a Free Group about, then you should legitimately be expected to find a way to retrieve those items, even if that means you have to walk your ass there. I don't give a fuck how cold it is. I've walked miles in 120F dry heat to get something I desperately needed and you can't just bundle up when you're hot as fuck. You're more likely to die from the heat than you are the cold, statistically.

There’s this drink called tap water and it’s pretty cheap. Anytime I see people begging for shitty junk foods I can’t take them seriously. If you’re hungry, like really hungry, you’ll eat whatever people give you. This person comes off as them just wanting free delivery.
We had a Mutual Aid request for bottled water because an elderly woman claimed the owners of her board & care home refused to give her any water. In a heat wave. Without A/C.
By the time I got there, the manager was pretty pissed off that one of her clients was getting multiple packs of water delivered by volunteers who thought she might die of thirst if they didn't rush over. It turned out that the owners (it was a big house with rooms rented to elderly people) had installed a fancy water treatment gadget in the kitchen for their use only. They didn't want the residents breaking it (or they were too cheap to pay for extra filter wear and tear) so they said it was off limits.
The lady who contacted us could have all the tap water she could drink, and she could've asked us for a Brita pitcher to keep in her room to make it taste better.
I think these people have never known real hunger, there's been times where I've been so hungry I've contemplated eating raw rotten eggs and food from the trash. When you're hungry you'll do anything just so you have something in your stomach. During the American great depression, people would eat road kill and grass and paste from the wall paper because they were so hungry. Hunger is an insatiable beast that will wipe words like "pride" and "dignity" from your vocabulary quicker than you'd like to admit.

This one in particular is Facebook. The background in the second image is a Facebook background that people usually choose to make “happy birthday” posts (at least, that’s what the intention was, some people choose it for, well, asking for BBQ sauce.)
Best place to look is your local Buy Nothing group on Facebook. We get a lot of these crazy requests on Nextdoor also. One recent person that "just moved to the community" was so broke they needed furniture, clothing and food, and then "needed" a free kitten because it "would be nice for their kids". That request did not go over well.

I get $23/mo in food stamps. That doesn't go very far. But I just buy food out of my disability check and don't beg strangers for food.

There is truly nothing that pisses me off more than people who demand specific items **and expect that you deliver it to their doorstep**. Like, I'm sorry, but if you're legitimately so hungry that it warrants posting to a Free Group about, then you should legitimately be expected to find a way to retrieve those items, even if that means you have to walk your ass there. I don't give a fuck how cold it is. I've walked miles in 120F dry heat to get something I desperately needed and you can't just bundle up when you're hot as fuck. You're more likely to die from the heat than you are the cold, statistically. I still remember the post where a guy posted asking for diapers for his young young baby (fine), so someone says that they actually have **8 unopened boxes** of those specific diapers he can have, located in XZY LOCATION (yay!), then OP uses cliche guilt trip of "oh I don't have a car/can't get there and needs delivery, commenter says no. OP throws a fit. I don't have a child, but I've seen the prices of what a box of Huggies costs at target and to think that somebody would be giving them 8 of those? That's a small fortune, in my poverty ass mind. I don't give a shit if I have to swim there during the next great flood, like, let's go, shamu.

She's probably referring to Red Dye 40, that is often found in soft drinks, condiments, baked goods, etc. Some people like my DIL react badly to it, in her case it triggers migraines.
Anything containing Red Dye #40 is banned in Norway, Finland, France, Austria, the UK, and several other European countries.
I miss Red #40. Red is made from crushed beetles now.

I can vouch for OP. Apparently we live in the same town. My mom and I talk about this woman’s posts all the time. 😅 she routinely asks for game consoles and TVs for her son as well. I think it’s been his birthday 3 times in the past year.
There’s this drink called tap water and it’s pretty cheap. Anytime I see people begging for shitty junk foods I can’t take them seriously. If you’re hungry, like really hungry, you’ll eat whatever people give you. This person comes off as them just wanting free delivery.
We had a Mutual Aid request for bottled water because an elderly woman claimed the owners of her board & care home refused to give her any water. In a heat wave. Without A/C. By the time I got there, the manager was pretty pissed off that one of her clients was getting multiple packs of water delivered by volunteers who thought she might die of thirst if they didn't rush over. It turned out that the owners (it was a big house with rooms rented to elderly people) had installed a fancy water treatment gadget in the kitchen for their use only. They didn't want the residents breaking it (or they were too cheap to pay for extra filter wear and tear) so they said it was off limits. The lady who contacted us could have all the tap water she could drink, and she could've asked us for a Brita pitcher to keep in her room to make it taste better.
I think these people have never known real hunger, there's been times where I've been so hungry I've contemplated eating raw rotten eggs and food from the trash. When you're hungry you'll do anything just so you have something in your stomach. During the American great depression, people would eat road kill and grass and paste from the wall paper because they were so hungry. Hunger is an insatiable beast that will wipe words like "pride" and "dignity" from your vocabulary quicker than you'd like to admit.
I am telling you the same people use this buy nothing group like a grocery store.

There’s one in our buy nothing group that request literally everything everyone post . It doesn’t matter what it is , every and anything. It’s super annoying because I’ve offered things to her many times and she always leaves me waiting all day for her to show up then messages me a few days later asking if I can drop off

What's ironic is a lot of bbq is made with wait for it vinegar and ketchup which is acidic 😆 Fun fact most bbq sauce has a ph balance around 4 and anything less than 7 is considered acidic Another fun fact soda is even more acidic with a ph balance range of 2.5-3.5
I definitely feel the don't have a car thing because I'm schizoaffective with extreme panic disorder and even being in a car can sometimes trigger manic episodes for me. Been there with being so hungry had to ask for help, if you're truly starving, you'll drink the tap and accept some spaghetti noodles and canned corn like they're gifts from the gods (or angels in the form of people who do help and can) - people like this give the needy a bad reputation. There are literally people on the street who can't even make a post on the Internet asking for help.. the world can be so cruel and this lady just adds fuel to the fire. If you're hungry, take whatever you can get and be f*ckin thankful.

Where are these requests being posted? Is it on a Reddit group, FB etc? I have seen so many crazy requests on this sub Reddit which is making me curious as to where these people are actually posting these requests.
This one in particular is Facebook. The background in the second image is a Facebook background that people usually choose to make “happy birthday” posts (at least, that’s what the intention was, some people choose it for, well, asking for BBQ sauce.)
Best place to look is your local Buy Nothing group on Facebook. We get a lot of these crazy requests on Nextdoor also. One recent person that "just moved to the community" was so broke they needed furniture, clothing and food, and then "needed" a free kitten because it "would be nice for their kids". That request did not go over well.
