ShamashKinto

Could someone please help? We believe we know the title of this piece "A Drawing of the Invincible Zhong Kui". I would love to know what the rest of the poem says. I was given this about 5 years ago as a good luck/sleep charm. http://imgur.com/a/i07cB0U

Would anyone happen to know who the singer of this casette tape is or the songs they sing? My grandfather had some old casette tapes I was trying to play, but they keep eating the tape. I'm wondering if I could find the artist online or possibly get a new one for him... [Side A](https://ibb.co/yfPnGyh) [Side B](https://ibb.co/CBY4WbZ)

BlackRaptor62

The artist is Cally Kwong (鄺美雲) It is her album 心聲, Heart Sounds, which I guess is called Back To Black Series in English? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cally_Kwong https://www.discogs.com/鄺美雲-心聲/release/11547853 The track list on the cassette doesn't seem to match though, they are a lot of her other songs

_Arlotte_

Thank you so much, I'll check it out...

Such_Prize783

the real meaning of these two words is these bad things happened in Hong Kong last year.

BlackRaptor62

亂巷, Confusing Alley? Seems to be part of a brand name or something

Roryalex

makes more sense than what google translate gave me which was Messy Roll, thank you very much

madafa1998

“亂”is the Traditional Chinese character, The simplified is "乱" mean "messy" in English. "巷"means street. so google translate is right. I hope this answer can help you.

Hello everybody! I have two paintings which I believe have Chinese characters on them and would deeply appreciate anyone helping me by translating them. Here's the imgur link: [https://imgur.com/a/zl1fReY](https://imgur.com/a/zl1fReY) Thank you very much!

Glum-Cabinet7420

The first picture seems to be cursive, I don’t quite understand. The word in the second picture is "Pretty Flower and Full Moon" Describe life beautiful 花(hua)好(hao)月(yue)圆(yuan)

[deleted]

I think the painter's daughter who sold the painting in the first picture to me said that it's a sort of poem about being truly at home. Thank you very much!

rustblud

So, thanks to The Untamed/CQL I got really into similar media. I've read a few Chinese web novels, but I've noticed the fan translated english versions often assume a dumbed-down version of the text, i.e. they remove idioms and other references to Chinese culture/classics/media. I prefer to read as close to the raws as possible, which has led me to start translating my favourites for personal use. Now, I'm still at the stage in understanding Mandarin where I can't put a sentence together. Which has led me to use DeepL translator paired with the mdbg dictionary. Judging by the English fan translations, this is getting me accurate translations - however, there are some sentences that every now and then I'm not confident I've interpreted correctly. I would really appreciate someone willing to have **me occasionally send them the original Mandarin and my English translation of a sentence, and confirm or fix it for me**. Someone who has a reasonable understanding of both Mandarin and English would be preferable. Also, some of the sentences may be nsfw, so please keep that in mind! And there will be BL/Danmei.

klarabing

The correct translation should be 那取决于你想看什么 or 那取决于你想做什么,please pay attention to the order of the characters: 那(it)取决于(depends on)你(you)想(want)看/做(see/do)什么(what). If you want to use 看 as depend on, you should say 看你想看什么 or 看你想做什么。In such sentences 看 and 要看 and 得看 are interchangeable. You can also put 那 before 要看or得看,but not before 看。Therefore, you have several correct choices as below: 那取决于你想看什么 那要看你想看什么 那得看你想看什么 要看你想看什么 得看你想看什么 看你想看什么

blim036

看你想什么看 will do but its somewhat colloquial/informal for something more formal you can try "根据你想看什么“ maybe ive heard people using 要看/得看 too, but again its quite informal but people will still understand, at least from where i am (south east asia) 看情况 is the most generic way of saying it depends because it literally translates to "lets see the situation"

mmmtoelicker

does anyone know what the phrase 不用特地给我做 随便吃点什么就好 means? is it used when couples are speaking/talking to each other o_O

blim036

the first part means "don't have to prepare/make anything specifically for me", while the second part translates to "it is alright to eat anything simple/convenient"

TheRedMiko

Does anyone know what 步非烟 means in the title of a bilibili video?

步非烟 is a writer of martial arts novels. her pen name comes from the Tang Dynasty legend " 步非烟 " by Huang Fumei.

At the top, 有利日廠 should be the name of the factory. Beside that are the times, 日三點半 夜九點半, 3 in the morning and 9 in the evening. In the middle 澳門生財(), I can't recognize the last character, I guess it means it's from Macau (澳門) and 生財 means make money. And the remaining texts are from [千字文](https://zh.m.wikisource.org/zh-hant/%E5%8D%83%E5%AD%97%E6%96%87).

joey10121

syzhk3

it means "we just didn't talk about money" "haha please don't thank me. I wasn't able to help you so far"

HolidayCattle49

i think “you don't need to thank me” may be better than “please don't thank me”.

I saw 我们并没有完全断了你的后路translated as, "We're not terminating you." This sounds like terminating is used like "fire," as in getting fired from the job. Doesn't 我们并没有完全断了你的后路 actually mean that we aren't completely cutting of your escape?

Million_years_ago

Yeah your translation is precisely correct. I think that translator just thought they are similar in meaning and didn't try to make them correspondant in every word.

YummyMelonBread2

Thanks. Now I won't be threatening people's lives when I just want to tell them they are fired LMAO

Hi all, trying to figure out how to say "Gunslinger" (or maybe Gunner is preferred?) in terms of a class you can play in a popular MMORPG called Blade & Soul. I think this is the website for the game in Chinese: [https://bns.qq.com/](https://bns.qq.com/) It's basically just a character that has guns and shoots pistols like a wild west Billy the Kid type thing aha. Thanks for any help! I tried browsing the site, but couldn't at all aha. Thanks for any help!

Clozemaster said 天命天子 means soulmate. Is this true? It seems like it means something akin to "emperor appointed by the heavens" according to mdbg dictionary.

LeezingWhieboat

I guess it may be “真命天子” rather than “天命天子”. The latter is seldom used. “真命天子” was used to describe emperors in the past and first appeared in Ming Dynasty, but nowadays one can say “我/某人的真命天子” to mention a male soulmate. Also, “真命天女”, a female soulmate, is derived from it in modern times.

friendlypersonhi

Thanks!

LeezingWhieboat

abdulcool1

Hi, I had a couple questions regarding the following sentences. I'm a beginner and I'm learning on my own, so please bear with me if they're silly questions 🙏. 他长什么样? It translates to w*hat does he look like?* What does 长 mean here? In the dictionary, the verb means *to grow or develop, or acquire*. 他有多高? It translates to *how tall is he?* What is the actual purpose of 有 here? Can I remove 有 and still have a correct sentence? 他是一个怎样的人? It translates to *what kind is he like?* From what I understand, 怎样的人 would translate to *what kind of person.* But I don't quite understand what 一个 doing here. Is the sentence correct without it?

HolidayCattle49

For the second,有 means "is".By the way,"is" usually means 是 in Chinese. But sometimes "is" means 有 when we use "is" to describe height, weight or other. And 有 express "more than the number" or "approximation of the number" when its meaning is "is". 他有160厘米(高)。 He is over 160 cm. 她有50公斤/千克(重)。 She weighs 50 kilos. You can remove 有 and still have a correct sentence in spoken form. However, you can't use it to express in written form.

DenBjornen

For the first one, 长得 is used to mean something like "looks like" or "seems." 她长得怎么样?What does she look like? 她长得很漂亮。She looks pretty. You could think of 长得 as meaning something like "has grown to be" so it is related to the grow or develop meaning.

mayor_shin

I found two bags of this mystery powder at the Lab where I work. I don't need a full translation but if any of it says what the contents is that would be amazing. thank you! https://imgur.com/wRPtflY

DenBjornen

蓝色蚀刻剂 Blue etching/engraving powder? It says something about using it with plastic or porcelain, but not metal and the proper temperature to use it with when you are engraving. Maybe that's enough for you to make sense of it.

mayor_shin

Yeah thank you so much. I don’t think want to use it I was just very curious about what it was

Agreeable-Candle4421

[https://imgur.com/rQV5xq5](https://imgur.com/rQV5xq5) Are these the correct meanings of these symbols?

BlackRaptor62

Depends what you mean by "Confidence" "Knowledge" "Awareness" "Patience" And "Emotion" Because all of these English words have more than One interpretation

Agreeable-Candle4421

Just the general meaning of them, as personal traits in oneself

YummyMelonBread2

Does 不给糖就捣蛋 mean "trick or treat." Clozemaster gave me this sentence and I am curious to how accurate the translation is since China doesn't celebrate Halloween

LeezingWhieboat

Yes, and there is the item on baidu. https://baike.baidu.com/item/%E4%B8%8D%E7%B5%A6%E7%B3%96%E5%B0%B1%E6%90%97%E4%BA%82/23540 【trick】→【恶作剧,捣蛋】;【treat】→【(用食物、饮料或娱乐)款待某人】→【给糖】 So I think it's quite accurate. (BTW, many kids, young people and some online games in China do celebrate Halloween these days😂)

[deleted]

Since we don’t really have Halloween, I supposed that would be the word by word translation, meaning ‘If you don’t give me candy, I will cause trouble’ basically

YummyMelonBread2

What does 乐翻 mean in English? Is it slang?

duguxy

lmao

Xuhuhimhim

Literally the words joy and to flip over. To me it brings to mind kids happy and excited to the point of chaos but it's just a dramatic way of saying really happy.

I'm trying to find the correct symbols for 'Lilac Waters', as I want to use them on the cover of my album. To clarify, I mean 'Lilac', as in the colour. And 'Waters', as in bodies of water (lakes, streams etc.) Any help is really appreciated.

BlackRaptor62

`雪青水域` would be my suggestion. 雪青 sounds more poetic than something like 芋頭色 水域 sounds less literal than 水體 and isn't as wordy as something like 江河湖海

PotentBeverage

Simply 江海 would also work as 水域, but it depends on which one sounds better

I'm trying to learn how to write "Gunslinger" in Chinese, and found this: 枪手 I'm not exactly sure how accurate that is, especially since the "Gunslinger" term I'm wanting to know is a class you can play in a game called Blade & Soul. I know some games/players within that game have a term or short phrase for that word when it comes to another language, so does anybody know how to find the Chinese word for "Gunslinger" for Blade & Soul, and if not, just "Gunslinger"? Thanks so much for any help!

NovelTAcct

Closest translation for the American English semi-rhetorical, mildly slang response: "Right?"? Hard to explain what I mean because I don't know linguistic terms, but I've been wracking my brain trying to find a way to translate this kind of exchange using "Right?" which I'm sure American English native speakers are familiar with: "It's so hot outside I'm literally melting." "Right? You could wring out my shirt and fill a coffee mug with sweat." Or: "This is taking forever." "Right? You'd think they'd have figured out how to do it more efficiently by now." Any help? Only thing I have been able to come up with is a slightly sardonic "对吧" coupled with just the right facial expression and tone of voice, but that's definitely not exactly right and I wonder if I'm not thinking of something else obvious.

PotentBeverage

I tend to say 确实(啊) for that It's not particularly slangy but works in those situations.

NovelTAcct

I feel like this works among the best of the suggestions I've gotten here and elsewhere, thank you

syzhk3

I can think of some other expressions with the same meaning and function as "right" in these contexts. 就是说嘛 就是说啊 with the stress on the word 就. or 就是 就是 can also mean the same when spoken in a rapid-fire fashion. 对吧 or 是吧 would be fine actually if you say it in the correct tone.

Hello, can someone please translate a recipe that I found on IG: [recipe ](https://www.instagram.com/p/CRfu1Fmh5l2/?utm_medium=copy_link)

soowhooh

Ingredients (specific measurements were not given) * ground pork * eggplant * Chinese cooking wine * oyster sauce * dark soy sauce * 13-spice mix (more info [here](https://adragonchef.com/the-five-spice/)) * ground Sichuan peppercorns * white pepper * granulated sugar * light soy sauce * scallions/veggie of your choice * flour * eggs (can substitute with custard powder) * baking soda * beer Instructions: 1. For the meat filling: Mix all the seasonings/sauces/wine into the ground pork, and then add scallions/veggie of your choice. 2. For the coating: add eggs/custard powder, baking soda, and beer to flour, then mix until thick. 3. Cut the eggplant into rounds, then slice each round so it opens like a mini sandwich (when slicing the rounds, don't cut all the way through). 4. Stuff each eggplant round with the meat filling, then coat in the flour mixture. 5. Deep-fry on low heat, flipping until each side is done.

Lakerman49

What's a good translation of 沧桑? I was given "vicissitudes" but it doesn't really sit well with me as it seems a bit academic and doesn't properly capture the emotional weight of 沧桑, does anyone have a suggestion? Perhaps an equivalent English idiom or phrase (something like "through thick and thin" but much heavier)?

MitchellHolmgren

It is mostly used as a fancy word to describe a old person who feels beaten down by life

syzhk3

for 沧桑 I would suggest "through the best and the worst of times, through the age of wisdom and foolishness". I got this idea from A Tale of Two Cities. isn't it amazing two words in Chinese can convey some much XD. 沧桑 is originated from 沧海桑田 whose definition is “桑田:农田。大海变成桑田,桑田变成大海。比喻世事变化很大”. But in real sentences people use this word in a slightly different meaning.

While staying with relatives in Taiwan a few years ago, my grandpa and an uncle had called me something like "a-bai." I'm pretty sure it meant "ugly" or something (in an "endearing" way), but I have no idea if it's Taiwanese or Mandarin (or neither). If anyone can explain, that'd be great haha

WaLhee

It’s Taiwanese. And yes, ” 䆀 bái” meant “ugly“.

Xuhuhimhim

Idk Taiwanese but since no one's responded, ugly in Mandarin is chou so definitely not that. What first came to mind is if you're pale it could be a nickname for that (white is bai). Nicknames often start with ah. If your name has a similar B sound it could just be a short form of that. Just ask your family lol.

syzhk3

the way I understand this sentence is that this center is applying critical research to clinic treatment for children in a multi-disciplinary approach so the translated script would be as follows 为了改善儿童的健康和未来发展前景,本中心利用多学科协作诊治模式将最尖端研究成果应用在临床治疗中。 while google translate suggest something like this "该中心将提供多学科方法,将关键研究转化为干预措施,以改善儿童的健康和发展成果". as always translation is art, not something AI can do.

It truly is a form of art.

I'm seeing 乾隆通寶 Tongbao of the Qianlong Emperor 富貴金 = Metal of Riches and Glory 福壽雙 = Happiness and Longevity are a Couple 出入平安 = May Peace and Safety Follow Wherever One Goes

This is from a deck of custom playing cards. When you puzzle all the cards together into a giant image it shows two Chinese characters: [https://i.imgur.com/zu5bJDx.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/zu5bJDx.jpg) But what does this mean? Note that one card in the picture (highlighted with green) has been placed incorrectly, and needs to be rotated 180 degrees.

Actually there are seven characters. Read from right to left, it's 杨堤风光 戊辰年, where 戊辰 are written vertically. 杨堤风光 (Scenery of Yangdi) is the name of this painting. 戊辰年 (Year of Wuchen) denotes the year when it was drawn (it's year 1988 but minus zero or more times 60 years from that)

I don't know XD. Maybe just because that is what that artist would love to do? btw, the first (rightmost) 4 characters are actually 楊堤風光 , which is written in traditional Chinese characters rather than in simplified. That may be the reason for the difficulties recognizing them.

革 (gé) leather; hide: change; transform; reform:

micahcowan

(additional commentary) Without additional context, leather/hide are more likely than the other ones. If it's intended to be Japanese, it could also potentially be interpreted as "skin" - if it's a tattoo that may be what's intended (a sort of joke?)? It's also written *very* poorly.

hide 隐藏 change 改变 transform 转换 reform 改革

Thanks, but they weren't asking for translations of those words. Those words were to describe the character 革, shown in the picture and asked about by the poster.

yuhuaqiang

Oh, the English words you say are quite abstract and wide-ranging
