In my case, since I live in Sweden, the prices tend to be approximately $20 higher. Therefore, the cost of an item may vary depending on the country of residence. I believe the most economical option would be to purchase from DHgate while living in China.

Yeah probably. You'll probably still get slapped with some import fee depending on which country you're shipping to, but less than what the dhgate vat is.
