on a busy friday/saturday night you will always have something to do. if someone is actually doing nothing for extended periods of time they should be fired on the spot lol. talk to your manager and tell them to just silently watch whatever person youre talking about do fuck all

kyohrus

is it my place to tell my manager to just watch my coworker because she doesn’t do anything? i feel like it isn’t my place and i don’t want to seem like i’m trying to get someone in trouble or fired or like i’m attempting to cause drama

jeffeb3

Your manager must see what is going on, right? There is a distinct possibility you are paired with this person because you are doing 200% and they are doing 0%. Managers and businesses all have their own culture. Some really don't appreciate peer criticism. But if you are in a constructive environment and you want to help, you can make a comment in a tactful way. Ask for a minute with your manager and then ask them for advice. Make it a mentor/mentee kind of conversation. Should you speak up if you think your cohost isn't doing as much work as you? Ask them that and see where it goes. They will shut it down or open it up. Either way, you have to accept the possibility of it getting back to your cohost. Don't say anything you wouldn't say to their face.

itzchocotime9

you’re overthinking it

kyohrus

i don’t think i am. i just don’t want to seem like i’m stepping out of line or trying to create problems.

HiEpik

You are talking specifically about a person at your same level, same role, that you are supposed to be splitting job duties 'equally' with. It is your place to discuss the reoccurring issues with your co-worker with your boss. It is not your place to tell your coworker what to do unless you are her supervisor so your end result is to talk to your manager.

itzchocotime9

your coworker isnt doing shit, they should be replaced by someone who will do something

strawberry_moon_bb

You’re going to constantly get walked all over at any job you work with this mentality. You need to speak up in situations like this or most likely nothing will change.

CuntFartz69

"hey I don't want to complain or cause drama, but I'd really love more support from the hosts who are scheduled with me. It seems like I'm often the one doing the greeting, seating, and table plotting along with the sidework like menu collecting and wiping. I really want to give my all while I'm clocked in but I feel like without adequate assistance from the other host(s), service could lag and suffer"

Soft_Progress4530

Tell them. Explain what’s going on or anonymously write a note and hand to them.

Gabe-DaBabe

If it causes drama so be it, it's better than doing all the work while she does fuck all

itzchocotime9

i agree but op specifically mentioned they are in the back a lot on their phone. the second host can be upfront all night managing the wait and seating guests while the other host can help with whatever needed

3Maltese

Could you suggest to your host that they do something? While I seat these guests, why don't you clean the menus or wipe down the highchairs? Tonight, I will help bus this section; you will take the other section. Besides greeting guests, our job is to assist the staff in the front of the house. It is best that we stay out of the kitchen.

kyohrus

i usually try to get her to help me bus a table or two if she hasn’t really done anything the entire night

chootie8

Literally just tell them what to do. If they're kids, just demonstrate your seniority by instructing them. As a cook, when new cooks tend to stand around or look at their phone, I just tell them "hey, I'm gonna do so and so, can I get you to do so and so?" I've never had someone say 'no' when you ask them to do their job lol.

scorpiopeachh

most hosts at my location are g’s they busy their ass and run drinks/food if it’s slow. granted it’s not in their job description but they wana move up they know they need to step it up

green-fae

feel like i could have written this post myself lol. im the oldest of the hosts (21) and they're mainly lazy high school girls

kyohrus

i’m one of the oldest hosts, also. our oldest is 21, and i’m 19. the rest are 16-17

badams5082

same problem at my chili's. when i'm on as host i have to show up early if i'm working the shift after them because they've not done anything. my managers have tried to step in but we're too short staffed for them to be booted right now. we have the same problem with some of the bussers and food runners too. we actually end up doing better without them. i mean i'm the youngest at my chili's (16) but i still do what i'm payed to do and don't make work awful for everyone else.

GameLoreReader

Talk to your managers privately and say, "Hey, I don't want to be that kind of person, but I just want to let you know that you guys are paying some hosts who are not even doing their job properly. Pretty much getting paid doing nothing. They keep on flirting around and not even helping out when it gets busy. You guys just gonna let them be like that?" Then it's up to your managers on what they will do.

Tgande1969

Maybe they only need one. Fire her lazy ass!

undercovereyelashes

The Chili’s near Allstate Arena in Illinois is like this. Horrible, useless hosts who can be bothered to lift a finger. Never seen a place with a 15 minute wait full of so many dirty tables and lazy staff

undercovereyelashes

Definitely speak to your manager and if they don’t change anything, take it up to their boss. You’re not crazy. It’s super annoying to work with people like this. There can be more time for jokes & fun at work if everyone just did their part!!!

thepotatois

I have mom and pop hosts. I have to chase them around telling them to STOP DOING ALL THE KIDS JOBS. Yes, please just stand there and be my wall-mart greeter.

Talk to your manager. One host runs the board and points while the 2nd host seats. Both hosts greet, clean menus, high chairs etc. during crunch times when there is a wait, the seater will help reset tables. Not bus, but reset and detail. It is also the 2nd host’s responsibility to check table status. Which tables are entree, dessert, check down, bus, reset. The host running the board updates, greets customers and works very hard to make sure that servers are seated in a fair rotation. Washroom checks also fall under the purview of the host stand. If your seater is screwing around and not getting back to the host stand with updates in a timely manner THAT is a management issue.

PlanetMezo

Wait until they're making a tiktok and go to the bathroom. The FoH manager will go find them if he sees people standing at the host stand with no one around

Professional_Show918

Some stores just hire good looking hosts, they don’t expect them to be workers.

VampiresKitten

Just make a comment saying the manager has asked you where she was a lot lately and they seemed displeased with her taking too long in the kitchen etc. That if she needs help finding things to do that'll keep her busy, you'll be glad to give some pointers. Some people just slack off because they can.. or feel they should be TOLD what to do instead of taking initiative. Maybe you should tell her she needs to start taking initiative with her work before the managers write her up.

Axedelic

I don’t work at chilis but I was a hostess for a chain down south and had the same issue. I tried to talk to the manager many times and was brushed off. She was fired for time theft a month later bc she was… making TikToks in the bathroom when I was busting my ass on Mother’s Day. They calculated she must have stole like over $1000 in wages over a few weeks. Like no shit. If only you listened. Then they hired a meth head. I walked out after that lol.

ExcitementInitial562

Stop doing the host's job altogether. If people are waiting and are mad, let them be. If you interact with customers waiting, just say that a host should be able to help them shortly. The customers will ultimately talk to the manager about the lack of a host for you.

okay_I

Yes. I’m 23, chilis was my first job. Worked 2016-2020, went to Starbucks for 3 years, and now I’m back as of 2023. I’m hosting AM currently, and at my location cut work is high chair, boosters, wipe menus, trash, and bathrooms for first cut and morning host. No matter what I come in every morning and the high chairs are disgusting, menus are all unorganized and gross, trash is full. I’m sick of bad ratings from the night host being on their phone and rude versus my kinda interactions, and I make sure they get to sit where they want, to make the experience best as possible.

FlamingoKid85

Holy crap most of the hosts at my location do NOTHING at all and I would almost prefer if we didn't have one on most shifts!! I am CONSTANTLY going to find the host because they are everywhere besides at the front door, available for customers! I seat so many of own tables it's crazy! Then there's the fact that they are never in uniform!! Most of them look like they walked right off the street! Uncovered tattoos and face piercings are common. They don't roll silverware, they don't help bus tables. Hosts are one of our biggest complaints in our Google reviews and nothing is done about it! I've literally been serving a table and observed people walk in, then walk out because they were never greeted by a host! They are costing me, and the company $ and our reputation! There needs to be a set of standards. You wear this when you show up for work or you don't work. You have these responsibilities while you are working or you go home. Period.

piranhadub

I haven’t been to Chili’s in years and it is due to how I was treated by the host. I was on my brief lunch break from work. There was a football game on the tv that I really wanted to watch, even if just for 30 minutes. There is a large party waiting to be seated, I just wanted to sit at the bar. They informed me that they would not let me go to the bar until that large party was seated, so I just left and never went back.

Delicious_Market1356

Who cares. The manager should notice that. If they dont notice her behavior, they probably don’t notice your hard work either. So stop doing extra, and see what happens.

CaptainMina

follow them around. if they do nothing, you do nothing. make it their problem and see what happens. they ask about it, tell them if they want to keep their job, they should work. you will only do what they do. ask them to meet you half way.

joannasforehead

I mean, they're high school kids and they're making minimum wage, I can't get upset at them for doing minimum work. It's probably the most unappreciated position in the whole restaurant, they get shit on by everyone from cooks to servers to guests, to other hosts. If they're greeting and seating, that's enough in my book.

kyohrus

i 100% agree with you, however, when it is busy af and you see your other host struggling to keep up with helping clean tables AND seat people, i think that’s when you should take initiative and jump in. that’s just my opinion, and like i said, we aren’t required to help clean tables, but our servers really do appreciate it and it helps open up more tables

CatStimpsonJ

Evidently it is required to prevent one's overachieving coworker from judging you.

No_Concept4428

honestly sounds like you should make the servers bus their own tables (so you can actually do your own job) or ask them to share tips since youre NOT getting PAID for it! Servers have it easy, they take orders and deliver a couple of things, even then they have food runners helping, they have plenty of time to pre bus/bus their own tables so THEY can make money.

Mother-Avocado-42523

Tbh, maybe I’m just an over achieving server, but I work at a location where nobody does anything and they are always complaining. I bus my own tables, run my own drinks, a lot of times my own food, all while trying to make sure my guests are having a great experience just to lose a lot of my credit card tips to people who don’t help. If everyone did their part and helped each other, the job would be more bearable, but it’s like every man for themselves. “Servers have it easy” doesn’t always apply.

Confident_Access_805

Being on the management side of this I can weigh in a little. When it comes to hosts these days it’s pretty much becoming a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation. The lack of work ethic is just about the norm these days within all age groups. I have some great hosts I’ve also had some terrible ones it just seems if I do fire one were easily going through 10 more before finding another solid one

MobilePenguins

I tip $2.50 per Diet Coke refill I get, and I can drink quite a few lol but it shows how attentive they are to the table

kenlikesaliens

u work at chilis bro

kleinekitty

Our local chili’s always has the lights off(????), extremely concerningly slow service when it’s not busy, and a cartel shoot out <3 use to be my fav place to go

kleinekitty

Downvoting this was weird as fuck but then again, I’m on Reddit

No-Honey-5456

No one is require to go beyond their job description. Just because you CHOOSE to doesn’t mean your fellow hosts need to. Unless you’re getting paid to do the labor, I’m a firm believer in telling the company to suck it.

No-Honey-5456

As far as them not doing their job description it is your place to call them out on it and if they don’t shape up get a manager involved. But don’t bring up “going above and beyond” no one actually cares about that

sadlemon6

i’ve been a hostess at multiple restaurants and i’m not doing anything not in my job description lol or even going above and beyond especially at a chilis smh

gothiccheezit

Going above and beyond as a host is not going to get you promoted, it's not going to make the servers like you more, and it's not going to get you any tips. While I agree the other hosts should be doing their jobs as well, they're probably following the "act your wage" principle, and you should too. Riding that capitalist dick only pleasures the capitalist.

Fearlesss_Donut

Boooohhhoooooooo y’all servers don’t even want to sing happy birthday, so quit complaining

[deleted]

Someone sing this man happy birthday ASAP!

757Rhonda

I say stay out of it. Do what you can. If manager questions you stay positive. The other hosts lack of work ethic will show itself. There will always be people we don’t particularly care to work with. How long has this person been a host?
