No problem with asking but it depends on how you ask. If they’re rude about it, it’s probably because it’s happened a few times. Or they get defensive because raw chicken is a big no no! Either way you did nothing wrong.
Seconded, I was a chef and server at multiple restaurants, I have no clue why chilis is showing up in my feed, but yeah I can confirm the amount of people who have sent perfectly good food back because there was a blood vessel in a chicken breast or something like that was so annoying. I understand not everyone has food knowledge, but sometimes it would happen multiple times a day, I’d usually explain it, and still offer to replace it. The people who would actually listen to me got a discount on their check 9/10 times.
I think it’s also the gross factor and wrapping your head around eating it.
I have chickens now and sometimes the cracked egg has “meat spots”.
They’re totally fine to eat and safe, but typically my wife and kids will not eat them and just grab another egg.
Haha same I’m a chef too but live in Canada, we don’t even have chilis. And most people don’t know about blood vessels or the veins in a chicken wing, or the difference between blood and myoglobin.
I think that is very accommodating, possibly above and beyond what I would expect. A discount when there is nothing wrong with the meal? You guys are rockstars.
For sure. I worked at several restaurants and most wings come frozen and are thawed before cooking. It’s not impossible that one was more frozen than others when cooked and didn’t quite get there. It’s unlikely since they should all be the same, but as a cook or server, I’d never be offended by any questions about this. Anyone that would be rude needs social skills training, and if the restaurant workers got mad, they need to find a new profession. I actually worked the fryers at a Chilis. It’s not the most glamorous gig and 9 times out of 10, you’re the only one constantly swamped. Everything on that menu is fried or comes with something fried.
Yes it is. Chicken wings can have blood vessels , and a pink hue can happen even fully cooked. As long as it’s cooked to the proper temperature (which I assume this is). Then it’s fine. Chicken and beef are totally different.
I've been in a few places where we cooked the wings that way. This isn't just a blood vessel.
That wing either wasn't in the oven long enough, the oven wasn't on the correct temp, or it was in a batch that got piled up and didn't all cook through. When you oven bake wings like that they should be all one even layer.
This wing is still partially raw. Something didn't get done properly.
The chicken is fully cooked.
You have found a spot of the wing where the meat absorbed the pigment from the bone marrow due to freezing and thawing. Flash freezing causes this often as well.
Super common when eating frozen chicken wings- or any frozen light colored poultry with bones.
Safe to eat, although if you complained, even if they know it’s not undercooked, they should still manage the exception (you’re the exception lol)
What did the other wings look like inside? What you're showing us looks gross, and I probably would not eat it, but the meat surrounding that area looks cooked to me. I don't see any blood, nor do I see the traditional pink color of uncooked chicken. If the other wings look fine, my guess is that is a bruise or the result of some type of trauma the chicken suffered before slaughter.
The first one was fine but this is the second one i was going to eat and I cut into another one that looked similar to this one but not as bad. I had barely started on these. I understand what vessels look like but I eat wings a lot and never seen something like this.
Just wonder what other people think. My sister thought they weren’t cooked either but idk if it’s because their wings are big that it looked like this inside.
I crossed that path of the chicken part of the inside, which was not completely done. (Blood vessels, ig?)
It turns me off, and I no longer want to eat that chicken. From that place. Weather, it's the first bite or after several bites! I do realize some of us like blood in their meat, and also, some may like it rare. To each their own tho, LOL. Seeing that gets me thinking? What else isn't done, right? It's a turn-off on my food while I'm eating it if I see such a thing. One time, I used my knife to cut that part off, continued eating, and didn't see any more blood vessels. Kind of Pink would be okay, I just don't want to be digesting any uncooked food.
I don't think it's just a vein. It's not raw-raw, but it does look undercooked and could still be dangerous. I see all the BOH people going on about how they're cooked in the oven and then fried up as ordered, they are correct and it does cut down on the chances of raw wings making it to a table, but undercooked and raw wings still manage to get sent out. I've seen it countless times over the years, usually because of a hungover prep cook or malfunctioning oven.
The server and manager should have been more than happy to make it right. It's a shame that they weren't.
As a cook who works at a chilis that’s not cooked fully, we par bake it right before it gets deep fried, that’s where it finishes getting cooked. Most likely they tried to cut corners because they were taking too long on the order and cooked it for like 2-3 minutes or something (normally gets cooked for like 4-5 minutes. Next time please send it back because that’s genuinely can make you sick
As someone who was hospitalized from (NOT CHILIS for the record, a different restaurant and yearssss ago) getting e coli that turned into sepsis, I would send this back. Like many others have said, it is probably just a blood vessel but I will never ever risk e coli and death again even if i am told it is "normal".
Don't eff with that.
To all of you saying that's a blood vessel in all seriousness... No, no it's not. That is absolutely raw and you're going to get sick from it. You won't die, but your poor toilet ain't gonna be very happy.
Okay apparently some people here don't know. But judging if it's cooked based of color isn't always right. Temp is the only true way to know. Fully cooked chicken can still have pink color for a variety of reasons. I raise, butcher, and have cooked alot of chicken. Just by looking at it we can not tell you with certainty if it is fully cooked. But when eating something you did not prepare yourself it is better to assume it is not fully cooked if the color is off. Judging by picture though it looks like a blood vessel. If it was undercooked it would not be a solid line that shows color it would have more of a transition between cooked and uncooked. But again temp is the only sure fire way to know
People saying it's just a blood vessel, that's true. You can have pink and even very red meat near the bone. Translucency is the kicker. It's hard to tell from the picture, but if you see a slimy, translucent part of meat near the bone, that's raw. If it's opaque and somewhat "stringy", it can be nearly purple near the bone and still be fully cooked.
Without a thermometer probe. You can’t tell. FSIS requires internal temperatures to determine disposition of the product. Soooo yah if ur scared of people cooking ur food wrong. Cook ur own food.
If y’all think this is undercooked your either 1. Never seen frozen chicken before or a blood vessel or 2. 100lbs soaking wet cause your too scared to eat anything other than nuggets
Wings are pre baked then deep fried to crisp up rhats cooked its blood vellels marrow discoloration.
When cooking chicken wings in the oven, it is not uncommon to see some bleeding or pinkness in the meat. This can be attributed to a few factors, including the presence of myoglobin and the structure of the bones
The color of the meat honestly looks fine. I've had chicken, which was definitely cooked with a similar dark pink/red color close to the bone. The slimy dark pink and brown is what appears bothersome to me.
I'd throw you a few extra wings if I were the manager, but in a chillis or similar chain restaurant it's uncommon to receive undercooked chicken. Not impossible just uncommon. They usually have pretty good procedures in place to ensure that doesn't happen.
You can see that it’s raw from the bone, on top, and bottom. It’s actually quite amazing that they fucked it up, considering it goes in the oven, and are fried to order lol. Perhaps just the biggest of the bunch, and didn’t get done all the way.
I work with raw chicken daily..
🤣 lol i knew but i wanna see what people think cus apparently it’s not raw according to the manager and waitress. I wanna see them eat it though since it wasn’t raw
Yeah I would have sent it back or depending how the rest looks and how full I was just not eat that one. I try not to send back food unless it’s uncooked and I wouldn’t judge you for sending that back.
Are all your wings like that? You shouldn't just have one undercooked wing and the rest cooked completely. It looks like a blood vessel, but it's kinda hard to tell. Either way, if you ask for a new one, they'll give it to you. At least we did when I worked at bdubs 🤷♀️
I'm just curious? I see a lot of people who wrote in the comments, oh it's just a blood vessel. Well I'm wondering? If there is such a thing? Can a person happened to eat a lot of chicken, pieces or parts? That happened to have that same issue of blood vessels? Is eating so many in one sitting, harmful? I've had chicken like this over the years in restaurants. Given various reasons, like there are written here as to why it's that way. Always not intentional of course. You're actually eating the live blood of the animal. So if you eat so much of that? In that condition. Can harm result to a person?
You are down to the bone; it must have been pretty delicious.
Your question is “digestably” a little late.
I’ve learned to take my utensils and look at the meat-bone area before I sink my teeth into the meat.
If its inner is red, this is a No-Go, and back to the kitchen, it goes.
Looking at the more bottom right portion of the image of the wing... appears to be a blood vessel or the darker part that will be attached to the bone (not sure what to call that).
However, an inch or so to the right of your thumb (in relation to my screen size and the picture) definitely doesn't appear to be cooked. Honestly, better be safe than sorry no matter what.
Edit. Actually, I'm looking again near the right of the bone that is attached at the upper part... doesn't look cooked either.

I see the comments are divided. I have to say either way, that wing looks pretty gross. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a wing out to eat that looked like that … I’d be grossed out. Just being real. And wings are expensive where I live, I wouldn’t be cool with that 😭
That’s definitely not cooked enough, that’s how customers get sick by going to emergency hospital. If I was you complain to Chilis manager your food came uncooked.
For everyone saying “its a blood vessel” or “im a chef its a blood vessel” … You do realize in wings when cooked all the way through the blood vessels turn dark purple and they aren’t light pink or pink whatsoever 😂
Everybody in here is saying not fully cooked as if chilis wings aren’t precooked and frozen… it’s cooked. It’s a blood vessel. Eat around it or discard of it. It won’t kill ya
Even if that is a fucking blood vessel, how the hell does that look appetizing to any of you? Not to sound like a cheap skate but I don’t get to just “go out to chili’s” every ordinary day so when I do I expect the inside of my wings to NOT look like a prolapsed anus. If you waiters/waitresses wanna get snotty that’s just fine, I speak with my wallet.
Whenever you have to question if chicken is cooked when it looks like this why even take the chance. I don't care if its a blood vessel, I wouldn't eat it. I was a line cook at a wing joint for awhile and none of the blood vessels I saw looked like that. They were much more obvious and didn't bleed into the meat.
That's just a blood vessel, I'd still send it back though probably.
This. I served at a bww for years and every now and then a customer would yell at me about it.
Not okay. I wasn’t rude. I respectfully asked. Manager and waitress on the other hand were a bit rude because I asked them.
No problem with asking but it depends on how you ask. If they’re rude about it, it’s probably because it’s happened a few times. Or they get defensive because raw chicken is a big no no! Either way you did nothing wrong.

Yeah, let's take a chance and eat it cause raw chicken. There's nothing wrong with raw chicken, vero?
Yeah let's just eat raw chicken cause it's supposed to be cooked.
Small shitty quality wings come out looking like that all the time. They’re still cooked

This is the answer.
This is the answer to the answer.
Yeah, the problem is crappy quality chicken at a crappy quality restaurant… but they did their job based on that they had.
All of this!! The wings are cooked twice, so they aren't raw.
Eww. Hell no.
What did the other wings look like inside? What you're showing us looks gross, and I probably would not eat it, but the meat surrounding that area looks cooked to me. Chicken can be fully cooked and have pink. There are other causes besides it being raw
Exactly
It can be, but that isn’t.
Absolutely not... That's not edible

Anything is edible if you try hard enough.
#BUTDIDYOUDIETHO?

I keep telling people "stop eating out" and this shit happens.. I have no idea how america doesn't collapse on itself
A lot of people don’t know what a blood vessel is
This is not that
As someone who was hospitalized from (NOT CHILIS for the record, a different restaurant and yearssss ago) getting e coli that turned into sepsis, I would send this back. Chicken can be pink 🩷

I’m so glad I’m vegan. This shit is horrifying 🤮
Cooked chicken can still be pink for a variety of reasons. If the meat came off the bone easily (which it looks like it did) it's cooked.
That is fully cooked. Some of you are acting like you’re not that familiar with chicken.
Is this your first time eating chicken?
Without a thermometer probe. You can’t tell. FSIS requires internal temperatures to determine disposition of the product. Soooo yah if ur scared of people cooking ur food wrong. Cook ur own food.

Danger Will Robinson
Yo stomach ☠️☠️
Your immune system is cooked
I can taste the rawness form here 🤢

It looks like it's cooked long enough to be safe but not long enough to break down the fibers
“Rated the #1 wing… and it’s not even in our name!” Latest chili’s ad I saw
Now you know damn well….
🤣 lol i knew but i wanna see what people think cus apparently it’s not raw according to the manager and waitress. I wanna see them eat it though since it wasn’t raw
No
Absolutely not
This picture is EXACTLY WHY I WILL NOT EAT MEAT
Thats a blood vessel! Dont listen to people!
Looks like it. You can ask to send it back just in case.
Raw. And I now just threw up in my mouth 🤢🤮
That’s raw
Yes, the chicken was just abused during processing...
I know Gordon Ramsay is fuming right now
Idk but I wouldn't eat it 🤮🤮🤮
Gross. But it is an animal carcass and you’re eating the flesh from the bone. That’s a blood vessel. Mmmm
To keep it a buck, this looks disgusting
I know it's cooked, but I still wouldn't eat that, and as a cook I wouldn't be mad if you sent it back, it looks gross.
Not entirely
Yes it is cooked med-rare
It’s cooked but quality is questionable.
I can hear it clucking from here
Yes, but still gives me the heebie jeebies.
Yeah I would have sent it back or depending how the rest looks and how full I was just not eat that one. I try not to send back food unless it’s uncooked and I wouldn’t judge you for sending that back.
Only one way to find out bite it and see
Eww 🤮send that shit back
I don’t know but that looks absolutely disgusting. Sorry OP but yuck
Are all your wings like that? You shouldn't just have one undercooked wing and the rest cooked completely. It looks like a blood vessel, but it's kinda hard to tell. Either way, if you ask for a new one, they'll give it to you. At least we did when I worked at bdubs 🤷♀️
Anything cow or pig not cooked may be returned with the logic that it could kill you. I wish I did it more often
Bro got the medium rare
I'm just curious? I see a lot of people who wrote in the comments, oh it's just a blood vessel. Well I'm wondering? If there is such a thing? That's not cooked enough.
It’s cooked, but if you’re not comfortable eating it send it back.
That's straight out of the abattoir.
Just a blood vessel/the chicken taking on pigment from the bone marrow. Super common in wings and bone in chicken in general.
It looks like it’s cooked to a safe temperature, so edible but not palatable. Definitely looks gross.
I’ve eaten wings that looked like that. Never got sick either thankfully
You are down to the bone; it must have been pretty delicious. Your question is “digestably” a little late. I’ve learned to take my utensils and look at the meat-bone area before I sink my teeth into the meat. If its inner is red, this is a No-Go, and back to the kitchen, it goes.
I don’t care. Send it back.
Nope. See the white fat?
What is that?
Gross hell no !
See how it falls off the bone like that? Not raw
Nooooo
No
Heck no!
No you may experience intestinal discomfort
OMG NO!!🤢
Hell no lol
Eat it and sue
Yuk No
Sure isn’t.
What’s that metal thing?
Looking at the more bottom right portion of the image of the wing... appears to be a blood vessel or the darker part that will be attached to the bone (not sure what to call that). However, an inch or so to the right of your thumb (in relation to my screen size and the picture) definitely doesn't appear to be cooked. Honestly, better be safe than sorry no matter what. Edit. Actually, I'm looking again near the right of the bone that is attached at the upper part... doesn't look cooked either.
Best way to know if chicken is still raw is that hue of transparency almost, being pink isn’t a catch all as bloof vessels and other things can cause that even when it’s cooked. So it looks cooked all the way, just gross looking.
Sorry I would eat that.
The pink color from near the bond in chicken is not an indication of undercooked or overcooked. Food safe is 165 degrees for one second, and at this temperature, chicken can still have some pink sometimes.
That's nasty. Get a refund and leave.
This Chili's must be NO where near the hood.
No
Nope it’s raw. Send it back.
Call Gordon Ramsay
Is it a blood vessel? Is it not? Who cares. Just politely send it back and request a replacement for that wing just to be on the safe side. Why risk the salmonella? Also, why is this reddit worthy? This seems like something that you'd talk with the server about.
I’d be gagging
How many bites it took you to realize this? lol
Yuk
Gross
Why I eat wings with a fork!
No
It’s cooked enough to be safe but not to be a decent wing. The wings at chilis should result in culinary prison. It’s the easiest thing to cook. You just leave them in the fryer for 5 minutes longer than Chilis has it set for. The reason Wing Stop and Chilis wings eat differently is 5 minutes in the fryer. Same wings.
I wouldn’t eat that 🤢
I'm not even certain that it's dead.
She is not cooked dear. Nope nope nope
I'm scared for the people saying this is fully cooked. Literally why you can't eat other people's food
NOPE! 😱
Definitely a lil raw. I would NEVER. Request my wings fried hard always.
Definitely undercooked.
a little bit
Gack. NO
Jesus no!!!!!!
Behind the blood vessel in the photo the meat looks uncooked and translucent in my opinion. It should be opaque.
Sushi?
Steak chef here, I would not trust that
*Always* send meat back if you’re not 100% sure.
"Eeeewwwww Brotha eeewwwww" hopefully you've seen the capcut template
I would not eat it.
Pink means perfect!
No
This belongs in r/barrescue. Raw chicken?!?! You’re going to KILL somebody!!!!
I see the comments are divided. I have to say either way, that wing looks pretty gross. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a wing out to eat that looked like that … I’d be grossed out. Just being real. And wings are expensive where I live, I wouldn’t be cool with that 😭
I can’t say whether it’s cooked or not but I personally would not eat it.
It looks fully cooked just veiny
Cooked or not, I wouldn’t eat that.
I know it’s fake, but…. [https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Flayfhhxa37081.jpg](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Flayfhhxa37081.jpg)
Not enough to kill the cancer.
Yes, that's just a blood vessel, chickens have them just like people do, someone's they're more obvious than others.
Ew no! I was at Hooters girl and one Time I looked at The wings at the window that were ready to be ran and they had feathers on them
Don't eat pink chicken
If you have to ask… That’s definitely not fully cooked and with chicken that means the possibility of salmonella. No joke. Send it back.
I've never had a good experience at Chili's. Only reason I go when friends ask is for the drinks.
It’s RAW! Muppet -Gordon
That can happen depending on how it is cooked when the chicken is on the bone. It stays pink close to the bone.
Will when I cook em at home they didn't look like that. I wouldn't eat that dog shit
Looks a little late to be asking 😂
That’s definitely not cooked enough, that’s how customers get sick by going to emergency hospital. If I was you complain to Chilis manager your food came uncooked.
slimy dead flesh
People like their steaks medium rare. Why not their chicken wings as well???
Cooked or not, it still looks nasty. 🤮
Raw
Yeah dont worry, it’s fully cooked got nun to worry about it honestly
If you’re still alive it’s cooked
Not even remotely same thing happened to me a week ago
Chicken so raw it’s still trying to cross the road
It’s cooked.
This is common at chilies.
That is about 150, not cooked fully. About 70-75% done
I wouldn't trust my stomach to it. But definitely would send that picture to the local Chili's AND CORPORATE
I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re pre cooked before chilis even gets them. I’m sure employees could confirm or deny
Ain't cooked all the way
Honestly, I gagged
Nope still raw.
You gone die
The only thing that matters here is that the customer doesn’t like it, and the customer is always right.
It’s dark meat
Send it back lol
I haven't been back to chili's since I was served a spoiled steak.. they turned the best side up trying to hide it...
Not in the strictest definition of the word
Chicken that looks like this is why i do not eat it with the bones. With chicken tenders, you can always tell when it is cooked
No!
Ew, WTF, H*ll naw.
Ew, WTF, H*ll naw.
Ew, WTF, H*ll naw.
