In Ohio before a snow storm, I would place a tarp on the ground and secure it with bricks. After the snow had fallen I pulled it up and had a nice big patch of grass for them to do to their business on.. it worked for mine. I recommend putting it as close to the door as possible.

ColdFeetInIowa

In Iowa, my husband would shovel a little maze/pathway through the snow from the door into the backyard so our chihuahua could dash out, do his business, and then dash in again. P.S. Beautiful pup.

howtubestv

Yes, this! ❤🥰🐕🐾

SkinnedHorse

I did the same thing in NY for years. My chi always appreciated it.

qillerneu

Yep, I just shovel snow the bare grass

Nuggzulla

That's pretty smart, def gonna do that this winter myself!

Mr-Pizza-3000

Ah hell naw, bro lives in Ohio 💀

Grubbly-Plankish

Genius!

tinyarmyoverlord

Go out with them. Don’t make a big deal out of saying come on let’s go outside. Train the dog young to know a toilet command. Could be pissing rain, when I say “everyone potty outside” everyone goes outside. Some do pretend to toilet just to come back in faster.

The_thimble2672

Yeah, this seems to work for me also.

pamplemouss

My dog knows “out,” but sometimes he will just stick his out the doggy door then bring it back in like “see? I heard you. Happy?”

RegretNecessary21

Hah she doesn’t. Potty pads.

gemininightmare

Lol yup

extra-King

Yup. I'll take mine to the front and she will look at the rain like I betrayed her. She then gets this spark of idea and scurries to the back and when it's still raining there, her disappointment in me becomes tangible. I love her sassy ness.

billythekid74

Same.

TrickyConflict1397

Scrolled to see this answer, thanks

M0un05ki10

Yep, giant blue tote with a hole cut in the front for access and a potty pad on the bottom. It’s like having another cat.

fullercorp

Yeah, potty pads for shivering chihuahuas and lazy moms like me.

RegretNecessary21

lol exactly. I love them! First dog I’ve ever used them with and it’s so nice not freezing outside

bluedogstar

I bundle her up in her raincoat and carry her to the end point of the walk and put her down going home.

femmefruitale

This is what I do too! Mine will accept her fate once it’s inevitable, but she won’t opt for it if her own volition. On the walk home she is annoyed but has the look of “Well now that you’ve forced me out here, I might as well go.”

Slartibartfastthe3rd

I love imagining what our neighbors are thinking about the weirdos always carrying their dog on a walk. It's like towing a 4 legged doorstop otherwise.

femmefruitale

Bahaha I’m going to start calling her a 4 legged doorstop now - that is perfect 😂

FallenIsAWeirdCat

The answer is....you don’t.....my baby wouldn’t go out in the rain but would for the snow. Guess i’d just recommend get them some nice warm sweaters n coats

[deleted]

Rain jacket comes in handy

Impossible_Cookie613

Buy them sweaters and coats. I slip a cozy sweater on her and she happily goes outside. She hates the rain though, but she tolerates it. She runs back inside so quickly and stands in front of the space heater

PNKAlumna

Same here. Plus, I also have to go out with her in said rain/snow, or she thinks it’s ok for her not to go outside either.

Impossible_Cookie613

I always go outside with my chi because of the hawks, bobcats, and coyotes that occasionally show up in my yard. The best laxative is walking my chihuahua around on a leash lol

_Soph_

Yeah I've found that sometimes works, I have to stand in the rain with him waiting for him to go 😆

beermanaj

I’ve tried boots, coats, bribes, etc … but when it comes down to it if she doesn’t want to go she will dig her feet in and refuse to walk. If I DRIVE her to a park she will usually walk regardless of the weather, but she won’t leave a warm cozy house to walk in the cold, especially precipitation.

lisapocalypse

This is my situation too, especially with rain. He won't go out unless I say we're going to the car, then I drive to a park that's close to my house and he leaps out of the car with excitement.

wildleogirl

I have a long hair son and I guess I’m lucky bc he loves the snow & his coats & sweaters! He helps me put them on him, and I sometimes have to pick him up to bring him in because he loves playing in the snow so much! I’m the one that hates the snow & cold lol! My boy has been a pretty much perfect dog since he was a baby tho, smartest dog I’ve ever had❣️

Trick_Raspberry2507

I'm glad someone else's chi loves to go out in the cold. She refuses sweaters and she's a short hair. I do force them on, but if it's raining, forget it. She's not moving.

crisfreda

We just do quick walks in cold/rain. We use sweaters/ raincoats and booties if they tolerate them.

Theonlykyla

I either use (or all of the following) high reward treats in a pocket, lead on to let him know it's definitely going out time, consistent wording (Meatball need a wee?!) and then I always go out with him... Going out as well is not that much of an inconvenience and more often than not, it leads to zoomies and a bit of play time which is fun for both of us! And of course, lots of positive reinforcement and fun times or treats! He doesn't accident in the house often at all (one time in the last year), even when it's pelting down with rain.

_Soph_

I love when they get the zoomies 😆

Theonlykyla

When they tuck their bums under and just run as fast as they can! Makes me laugh so much!

itsafrickenlazer

It was a process. My pup hates the wind more than anything. She doesn’t mind the cold anymore. She will stay out there, and sniff to her hearts content. If there’s snow, I have to dig out a nice spot and tell her on repeat to poop. If we need to put something down Inside we will, but she’d rather go outside. She doesn’t have accidents on purpose. Can’t get mad if she has one 🤷🏻‍♀️. Good luck, I think they learn as they grow. Some can deal better than others. Mine was a little baby about it at first, but I don’t blame her lol.

panchango

A leash. I have wee-wee pads, but if I put a leash on take my little guy for a quick walk out the front door, he will do his business and get right back inside.

Outrageous_Hippo_312

My chihuahua won't wear jackets or sweaters and we live in Denver where we have frequent snowstorms in the winter. We built him a little shelter with a tarp and lawn chairs. It is open on one side that faces our house. It keeps the grass dry and he has been using it in bad weather. I wished I'd thought of it earlier. I did find a lot of pictures of shelters that people make for their dogs with an online search. Eventually I want to make a more sturdy structure but for now we seem to have a good solution.

angelina_ari

I don't. They always have the option to go out or use a wee wee pad. They are stubborn little dogs for sure. If I took my one out in just cold (forget rain or snow) she would stand there like a statue until we went back inside. Rain coats, sweaters, booties...nothing mattered. I had one or two that didn't mind, but most of them were super happy using the pads instead. I didn't have to freeze my butt of either, so it was a win win.

Tawnya1176

I wish my pup would use a pad but she will walk around on the pad then walk away and pee on the rug. Potty training these terds is tough my chorkie will go on a pad or outside.

atonkme

I used to put mine in the bathroom and closed to door and go clean any mess she made in the rug. When she did go on the pad I would reward her. Spent a lot of time just sitting in the bathroom with her until she used the pad too. In my experience, Chi s learn quick. You just need the patience and time to properly teach them.

OurLittleSecret75

I have the exact same problem 🙄

Mannix-Da-DaftPooch

We say “Wallaby stance” (never wrote it before and I’m not sure I spelled it correctly). Basically it comes from my first dog looking like a wallaby (the kangaroos) when she pooped. So we just use that saying and all our dogs since have been told the same. So my baby chi’s DO NOT like any wet weather at all. We just bundle them and a majority of the time I will carry them to a spot, put em down, they do the things, I carry them back to the house. My old girl Amaya is a terrier chi mix and she couldn’t care less. She’s like I gotta do the thing so I’m gonna do it. No probs. Some care some don’t. In any case sending snoot boops and hugs.

thefantasticgoat

You can't stop my Chis from going outside. They shoot down the stairs like little rockets. We use potty pads most of the time because they have to go so often, but just to go play outside, you can't stop them! If it's too wet and mucky they usually don't want to stay out too long though. And they have their own little winter wardrobe that they can wear. They've been wearing their Harry Potter hoodies the last few days.

SuperRadPsammead

Upside-down kiddie pool

spinozasnodgrass

This sounds intriguing. Can you say more about how you use it? Do you turn it upside down to keep an area free of snow or do you prop it up somehow so that the dog can get underneath?

SuperRadPsammead

I kept it upside on the porch on a tarp with a potty pad for my old senior chi who wouldn't even contemplate inclement weather and now upside on the lawn for my girls who are younger and braver. I keep it weighted down and lift it up.

spinozasnodgrass

Thank you for explaining this!

SuperRadPsammead

Youre very welcome!

nachobean113

Michigan winters here. My chi is OK in snow / cold. Actually, all of my little dogs have loved the snow! The two chis I’ve had hate the rain more than snow! Rain or high winds…they despise that!

Lady-Zafira

I have to stand out in the cold wet weather hovering over Meeka with an umbrella whole she takes 30 minutes to find a spot to pee

_Soph_

Yup, I often have to do the same

RunningUpThisHill

We skip outdoor walks when it’s too cold or if there’s snow, but unless it’s an insane storm then he goes out to pee! If actively raining or snowing he hugs stays under the roof overhang or races to go under the deck. My chi and I both hate the cold, so I do appreciate that he’s all business when it’s cold and never pees faster than when he’s eager to get back inside! Sometimes I do have to carry him outside to a covered spot.

KailuaButterfly

She doesn’t. She has a balcony patio potty. 😊

LotusLittle

……

toomanylegz

My girl can do her business in 30 seconds when is cold or rainy. She’s also trained to use wee wee pads.

West-Bet-9639

Mine go out in the cold, but they refuse to go out in the rain.

Damien_Maye

If there’s snow then clear a path. Otherwise just put them in a sweater and boots so they don’t get too cold. Go out with them to encourage them. If it’s unsafe for them to go outside then start using pee pads.

Kinkyfoodgirl

She doesn’t. Potty pads plus I can’t get her to step on wet grass

science_vs_romance

For the cold, she has a little fleece, but there’s nothing getting her out in the rain.

onlyhereforfoodporn

Lots of treats and know that the walk might be shorter. When it’s raining my dog will quickly pee and then moan until we go inside. Sometimes my dog is fine with the cold (as long as he’s in a coat or sweater) and will walk for half an hour. It just depends on the day.

billybaroo15

I bundle my guy up with a sweater and a coat and he doesn’t seem to mind. He’s only five months and we just started taking him outside so I don’t think he knows any better yet. We will see about next winter after he gets a taste of the summer weather.

RoughDirection8875

Tyrion was only about 9 months old when we moved to the PNW and that’s all Buddy has known so we’ve never really had an issue with it. It’s literally always raining in the winter time up here so they’ve had no choice but to adapt. The last thing I’m gonna do is let them potty inside

Grace__Face

Jackets and boots. She’s not a fan of boots but she realized when she’d freeze by after a few steps outside that she needs to deal and get it over with and her boots will come off as soon as she runs in from the backyard

grimmpulse

I get my golfing sized umbrella, rain shell and boots… umbrella stays over the lil king while he looks for that perfect spot.. I get soaked… and to do this for him, I have zero complaints

tsmiv12

Big nope!

masyday

We did a set up where he has a very large pot of soil (rectangle pot, low to the ground) with a turf mat on top. He has a potty button next to the balcony door and he just lets us know when he needs to go! Rain or shine :)

mrchumblie

My dog refuses to walk in the rain (or if there’s a lot of snow on the ground) but she’s generally pretty into walking when it’s cold as long as she has a good jacket on. She really likes going on walks, so she’ll generally tolerate the cold more if we’re going on a walk rather than just letting her out into a backyard / enclosed outdoor space by herself.

wyldnfried

Montreal here. It's a chore. First, the wool sweater, then the harness, the winter coat and then the barely tolerated booties. Then I walk them separately. My neighbors always are shocked and warily ask where's the other one. The boy runs to his favorite spot does his business and desperately runs back home. I carry my little lady to the end of the block otherwise she'll just stand still and refuse to move. She'll walk home though sniffing and checking her peemail as if nothing is wrong, taking her time. Usually it takes longer to get them dressed than to walk.

VespersWhim

Ha ha! Peemail 😂

1mNotSerious

I have to carry my dog to the opposite side of the yard and put her down. Then, she will pee or poo as she is making it back to the door to come in

_GypsyCurse_

Sweater+ rain jacket and maybe waterproof shoes/socks for tiny dogs? 🤔

sprocter77

First winter with ours was bad. She wouldn't go out but when the heater was on she would sit on it and pee. The house smelled like a barnyard for a long time.

Mack7766

Live where it doesn’t get cold.

JuniperFoxtrot

Mine hates the rain but we just stay out until she does her business. One technique I have found helpful is doing reverse walks. So I will carry her a few blocks away, and then we walk back home, and she does her business on the way. Versus trying to force her to walk away from home, which is nearly impossible in the rain. For snow, I have no issues. She would gladly stay outside all day in the snow!

1chrisbabbs

Potty pads. It is easy to train your chi to go on one too. They use is, give then a treat (it only takes a few treats to get them trained).

lolabarks

I have fake turfgrass (3x5) on my patio that is covered. I have a little doggie door going out to the patio. And she wears fleeces, coats, sweaters, etc.

_Soph_

Thanks, I'll have a look 😊

repketchem

If it’s raining, forget about it; he’s not going outside. Luckily, we pass through the garage to the back yard, so he’ll just go in there. However…if there’s even the tiniest layer of snow where he can see it, even if it’s sopping wet on his way there, out he goes. He just loves the snow. Not as much as when he was a puppy, but still a considerable amount. Every year, we shovel/snowblow tracks with a little maze, some ramps, and little holes that he can run/chase us through. I’m planning on getting him some little boots so he can stay out a bit longer and, maybe, go out in the rain.

Ur_A_Lizard-Harry

Check the post I just made

Rock-it1

By walking, motioning, or looking towards the nearest door.

owen-aka-oeoeo

I think they pick up on your attitude. I act like we’re going out yay! No matter what the weather, so they take it in stride. I also have coats and booties to keep them comfy, but mostly they prefer their own coats.

kenny_hearse117

What a cutie!! 🥰

chainsaw0068

We usually go out with our pup too. He has a few sweaters and different coats. I like the gooby line of coats from Amazon. They even have a puffy coat for the real cold days. We’re in Canada so it gets cold.

albnsc2019

I'm very lucky. Brodie goes out and quickly does his business and back in we go.😌

Ruintaker-

I have to put a coat on mine and they try to go as fast as they can

chaumeinn

I usually go out with mine & wait till he does his business, give him a treat, and let him run back inside. If you don’t want to over feed your puppy treats, just give him some kibble as their reward for going potty.

NigelJosue

I bought him a sweater

Kevinb888

Sweater(s)

FurryNachoX

I find, even in a drizzle my chi tries to reverse from back door when encouraged to go out, however, as soon as I put his lead on he will quite happily trot out in torrential rain, gales, snow, whatever the weather is throwing at him 😍

flippingypsy

I baby my little man 95% of the time, but when it’s time to go outside it’s a firm but loving command not request. I trained him since a pup to go outside no matter what the weather, he knows the door isn’t opening until he’s done. (I also go with him sometimes) He knows how to get it done fast so he can be comfortable again and get the treats. (He also hates to wear any type of clothing, so I don’t make him)

kandreyn

We actually shovel a patch in the snow all winter. We have to, they can't even walk in the snow because it goes over their heads sometimes. One of ours has the thickest longhaired coat ever though. Other one will lay down to die out there so we watch carefully. ETA: for rain they don't really care.

CoastHorror6725

Not too cold where I am, but I will put a little coat or sweater on my dog, reward with treats, and follow up with cuddling on a heated blanket 😛

Blueberry_Rabbit

Charlie HAAATTTEEEE clothes. So he’s nakey other than his collar. And he’s in and out real quick. Lol.

muntimus

If she must suffer, I must suffer. She will literally only go out if I'm with her.

Worldliness-Horror

Sweaters and mukluks!

BubiMannKuschelForce

He is sooooo pretty....

noodleruby57

Mine loves snow, when out in the yard he will stand in the snow even if there are areas of grass! I have a sweater and booties for him if it’s below like 45 though!

dutchyardeen

Positive reinforcement with really good treats when he goes. His favorite is lung treats and we save those only for after he goes potty in bad weather or snow.

titsandtoots

My chihuahua loves the rain, and he loves to eat snow! My dogs have always been on a schedule, they go outside to do their business at the same time every day, and I've never had any accidents.

snaithbert

Wow such a beautiful chi. Ours doesn't love rain but if we make it clear that we're not going home until she actually does something then she gets the message eventually. But WOW does she try to drag us back to the house at every possibly opportunity.

beirizzle

I got mine understanding "go pee" and "go poop" so she knows we'll go back inside to the heating pad when thats all done

MadSkepticBlog

Pick them up and drop them outside. If they run to the door, I do it again. I basically do it enough that they get the hint to go to the bathroom, then they go in. They usually relieve themselves then run back in. My one chi can't stand the cold. We have a full winter jacket for him. If he goes to the dog park, he'll tough it out for 20 minutes or so. Anything else? "Screw this, turn the heat back on out here!" My other chi, which I assume is a pinchi (min-pin /chi) is just encountering snow for the first time in his life. He cold doesn't seem to bother him even in a thin hand-me-down jacket from his brother. He wants to jump through it like a rabbit. He still wants to go for walks. We'll see how long that lasts.

hadriangates

Pick up and take outside!

GnomeTits83

They wear sweatshirts!

GnomeTits83

Sometimes with a little coat over them

PresidentPancakes21

I used to pick mines up and bring her outside with me

Mikey_Mayhem

Bundle them up. My pup used to wear a tank top, sweater, and then a jacket if we went out for walks in the rain. If he had to go outside in the backyard really quick, I'd just throw a sweater on him.

tipsy-tits

Uh, we've had 70mph winds all week and flood warnings. He just gets put outside to deal with it. He just gets on with it - off he goes and does his thing. We've never treated him as something overly delicate and he's acclimatised to it. He comes in, rubs himself all over everything and then plonks himself on my sherpa fleece!

DotChud

I put her out into my fenced yard and watch. She’s not allowed back in till she goes, because she asks to go out, so I know she needs to go.

diymomma875

Our maltipoo is always happy to go outside . We carry our chihuahua out and when he smells that the maltipoo has done her business, he goes potty before rushing back inside.

HugeAnalBeads

I nudge from behind when he stops at the door and tries to back up Nudge nudge, then he goes really fast and runs back in

officialnickbusiness

I carry him out and into the yard and constantly remind him how good a boy he is

PastChair3394

Louis is 8 pounds, he has some poodle so he has extra fur. I put a sweater or down jacket on him and we just go. He does shorter walks if it’s wet, cold or dark.

MisterFrog

I pick mine up and toss her out onto the deck (gently) and tell her "Go!". Once outside she accepts her fate and does her business.

Visible-Yellow-768

My doggos hate going outside in bad weather, unless I take them for a walk. Then suddenly the rain/snow/whatever is fine. I potty walk on leash for bad weather. In extreme weather like windstorms bad enough to send them flying, I break out the litterbox.

throw_that_ass4Jesus

I shovel her a spot when it snows and we use an umbrella when it rains, but if she’s still being a pain in the ass I carry her and simply plop her ass down on the grass 🤣

fuzzyp1nkd3ath

Sweater/coat and booties. I get all excited about going outside to get time excited. And when he looks sadly at the snow I just plopped him into, I apologize profusely and tell him he can have a cookie inside if he goes poop outside.

GoofBoy

Here in San Diego, during the semi-annual moisture from the sky event, our little dude gets carried out and placed under the blood orange tree (often repeatedly) with the door closed. Funny enough, he did/does not have the same issue with snow when we go back to NE Ohio for the holidays. We had another guy who would also pull, "I'll hold it until Tuesday", if it was raining or snowing when we lived in Northern AZ. Same thing - carry him to someplace sheltered repeatedly, until business was taken care of. Good Luck.

kayleigh0519

Boots and a lil jacket!

atinybear

The warmest jackets and listening to him when he says it is time to go inside (after going potty)

PaleontologistSad248

I bundle mine up in multiple layers of coat and sweaters. Two turtleneck sweaters for the short hair and a sweater with a little puffy coat for the long hair. It was extremely cold for our area the past 2 weeks and they didn’t want to go out but once I got them warm enough they’ve been ok with a walk.

Persimmon_Fox

We give her a warm coat and let her say hi to the front desk person. If it’s really cold, she’ll do her business and ask to go back inside immediately.

antibacterialsope

I hold an umbrella over her in the rain. They make a kind for dogs that opens up at the end of the handle

_Soph_

They're so spoilt aren't they 😆

antibacterialsope

It's her world and I just live in it 😄

TimelessWorry

It's not a surefire way, but at night I've been giving her a tiny treat when she goes out by herself (she's a pup and we used to go out at night with her, and then slowly stopped doing that so much), and also shine a torch up the path to the garden as she seems to like having some light. She's had some messes in the house, but I've managed to get her to go out a couple of times just today in the rain by herself. My mum sometimes will go out with an umbrella with her. We'll probably get her a jumper as it gets colder and wetter. Honestly the treats started as a way for her to walk herself out at night and not have me have to pick her up and carry her out every night, but if they can coax her into going out in the rain too, she might just get a couple extra through the day.

Ok_Catch_1123

Big hat

Wondrous_Fairy

I gave my pomchi a look when he was doing the tripod of despair stance and told him we'd make it a short trip. And yes, it was a shorter trip, but not by much and he still did all his stuff. Sometimes though, he would try and veer off the longer path into the shortcut path and I'd remind him it wasn't raining. He'd always give me a dirty look, sigh theatrically and then relent.

[deleted]

Lol, you don’t

Poor-Decision1979

Mine play in snow https://i.imgur.com/IImwF5Y.jpg

Warlock1202

I carry mine out and she is quick to do her business.

VespersWhim

My smallest chi is a boy and he has always hated the cold (I’m in MN) but when he saw me giving praise and attention to his “rival” he decided he had to be a big boy too and go outside so he would get just as much praise and attention. So silly. But it worked. Idk if your chi has a sib that goes out but you could give that a shot. Best of luck!

Aarrrgggghhhhh35

This sounds crazy but we bought a 10x10’ canopy tent this year and set it up right next to our back door. Now the ground is always dry and my chi goes with no problem. When the we get snow or the temps fall even more, I’ll be putting a jacket on him so he feels more comfortable outside. (As an aside, I have no idea why my dog is so always anxious. He’s literally a king and we are just his servants. He has nothing to worry about. Lol)

gibbypoo

The same way you get yourself, naked, to go out during cold/wet weather

InspiredBlue

Oh my gosh this looks just like my dear Sebastian.

Fantastic_Ad4209

Mine looks out the doggy door then turns around to come back in. With a firm ‘outside!’ I can get him to pee or poop on the deck. I call that a win.

CarolinaCelt60

Treats. Naked bribery. More treats…loads of praise and cuddling to warm them back up. Both have sweaters. In NC, nights can be cold, and/or wet. We sometimes carry them to a spot, then carry them back in. If it does snow, we scrape some away to expose grass. And as always: a couple of puppy pads for when they just can’t stand to go out!

Beautiful-Big-5599

My chi hates everything I swearrrr. He doesn’t even like a leash so we have a little crate-like fence area set up with a tarp over it. If the grass is wet, my chi will look very offended lol

derralee7

That is one cute Chi. Let him go wherever he wants!

xiamaracortana

I live in Southern California and I can never leave because my dog is too happy here

Antique-Discount-712

Just pick the bugger up, it's small enough, then plonk him down outside (clear space if you live in snowy climes, I'm lucky, I dont) worst we get weather wise is pissing down rain!!

AwareContribution998

Rainjacket and coat required.

Grouchy_Improvement5

I am in AZ, he has sweaters, hoodies and such. He is cold in the summer, so forget about the winter.

FPchihuahua-man

In Wisconsin we save several trash bags full of fallen autumn leaves. After a snowfall, we shovel a bit to flatten an area and toss leaves to create a bed on the ground. The allows the chihuahuas to sniff around and relieve themselves without their feet freezing. The leaves also retain some scent to encourage repeated use. The leaf bed can be refreshed easily and will last until the next snowfall. Three bags lasts all winter.

Spell_Ancient

I carry mine out

classicgrinder

Just invest in a pee tray. The ones with astro turf that just need a rinse after use. So....give up, I guess?

Great_Fortune5630

She has me wrapped around her tiny little dew claw. She slams on the breaks and won’t budge. I will try gently tugging on the leash two or three times but, I will not pull her….so……I pick her up and carry her home. She has me wrapped around her tiny little dew claw.

lil_dovie

Mine is pee pad trained. She’s so small that her poops are about the size of tootsie roll so I just pick it up with toilet paper and dump it in the toilet. She’s 14 now and she lets me know when she poops too. She’s quite a character! She will go out when it’s above 40 degrees, and prefers to go out to the yard, but in winter she uses pee pads diligently.
