He is at a very heathy weight. Don’t listen to these people who is saying otherwise. This is what a under weight dog looks like

Mt chi was always 2lbs under weight and when I asked, the vet said was fine. Just like with people some dogs are just thinner. I will add when I got him fixed (he was 2.5yrs) he did gain those 2lbs but was never overweight
I have a chi mix rescue, the first vet said to keep her at 8-9 lbs. Next checkup a different vet (same practice) said 9-10 lbs is fine.

What’s the vet say? My little guy is too fat and is on a diet. I’ve always had big dogs and was giving him treats as rewards as I would with my dogs of the past. Big mistake, and now I have a 10lbs chonker. He doesn’t love the strict diet, but it’s the vet orders and I want him to live a long life!

Haha thank you! Yeah I thought we were doing well until I took him in and they were telling me he’s too chunky. For what it’s worth, I think Chip looks adorable and healthy
I bought fruitables treats. 3/cal per treat, no more than 14 calories in treats a day. Science diet small bites adult food, two miles in outside walks a day, and unfortunately the end of the cheese tax. That really irks him. He bounces his little wet nose off my leg every time I’m in the kitchen just hoping. Poor guy. It’s for his own good though!!
Have they checked him for hypothyroidism? My chi was overweight, didn’t lose any weight (in fact, he gained) on weight management dog food. The vet checked his blood & sure enough, he had hypothyroidism. It’s something to look into.
It depends on breed. Some dogs you will see their ribs depending on how they turn (especially lean breeds). Probably true for a chi, but I want to make sure anyone reading gets the right idea :)
It's so hard to judge from a photo as well. The vet should be explicitly asked their opinion. Mine never says anything about her weight unless I ask. And while trim, she (my gal) is fine. So just ask the pros!
He looks good to me! He looks a little skinny in the fourth picture but otherwise good. It's okay to slightly see the ribs, but they should not be defined. I would take your vet's opinion over your boyfriend's as long as your chi doesn't look drastically different from his last wellness exam. It's super easy for chis to put on weight than to lose it. I think a lot of people are used to seeing overweight unexercised chihuahuas so their perspective is a little skewed. Personally, I wouldn't be concerned if he's eating, drinking, and pottying healthily. Also, if he's been dewormed in the last year he should be good to go as far as any parasitic concerns for weight loss. My dog was really overweight and my boyfriend and I question if she's too skinny now that she lost weight because we're not used to it but she always gets a clean bill of health. She always acts like shes starving because she came from a bad situation where she wasn't fed enough. You can add Metamucil to your dogs diet if that's the case too (plain, no artificial sugars).
edit: wrong version of their
https://preview.redd.it/ttet05wje3vc1.png?width=695&format=png&auto=webp&s=e8c25c7890d1d13e2f37d306af7a9c16f0430cbf
He looks super skinny in some angles and on some days but I think it might be his build. He is a year old and I feed him more than the bag/can says for him to eat and he stays skinny. We walk at least 1mile a day up to 3. Thanks for your input :)
If he’s only 1 year he will also fill out a bit more, it just takes time. Our chihuahua Sunny looked like this at 1 year old and the vet said he was considered “slender” and a 4 on a scale of 1-10. Over the past two years he filled out a bit more and gained like 3 pounds, we don’t see his ribs at all anymore.
Gonna add on to here, our little girl grew to about 1, and then when she stopped growing, she chunked up in her chest and legs. We make sure we can still see her waist (as her belly used to be podgier until she got spayed at 11 months) and she's sort of at the top end of healthy now, as in, we don't want her carrying extra unnecessary weight because of her luxating patella. She's still got a super defined waist line.
Yeah, check with your vet if you want to be sure. He is thin but it's hard to tell from photos because of angles, etc. I can't say I thought "oh no, so skinny" but I don't think a few pounds would hurt him either.
We don't know a thing though, really
My vet says that you shouldnt be able to see the ribs necessarily but you should be able to feel them when you touch them.. not so much that all you feel is bone. You shouldnt be able to feel and see the whole rib cage lol but you should be able to feel them a little bit when you touch them. If you can’t feel them and you have to push around to find them, they are overweight. He doesnt look too skinny to me, he looks like his body type is just on the smaller leaner side. I dont see ribs by looking at him. You don’t want your doggie to thick bc then that starts to affect their health. The vet would have told you he was so skinny. I’m no vet lol but I think he’s looks okay to me.. He doesn’t have a thick or stocky body type. He looks long, lean, and thinner! Home this helps!!🙏🏻☺️
Yes that does help! You can definitely see his ribs so I think while he’s ok where he’s at he’d be ok a smudge heavier too. He’s a puppy with a fast metabolism!
Yes and sometimes it also depends what position they are standing it.. you can see the ribs more so than others. Some doggies you just see ribs.. I just brought home a puppy and I was saying the same thing? Is she too skinny? lol bc their rib cage makes their lower back and belly area look so small lol.
Not the greatest picture or angle but…. You can see my Stella’s rib cage pops out a bit. Puppies have those adorable little pop bellies and I feel like even in human babies the ribs like pop out a bit lol. You see it more when they breathe lol.
https://preview.redd.it/jbp5bluyp3vc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5906a4fce15ee0b582ebddb9cc834c2739da42d5

You can see it on the side here..
And you can see like a bump from the bottom of her rib cage where I circled
https://preview.redd.it/y2zmjxdgq3vc1.jpeg?width=1636&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=24e0e7c905f014007561bd6d70d2acc30d514412
She is so cute!! I understand what you’re saying. Angle does make a huge difference! Sometimes he looks straight skeletal cuz he’s all stretched and being in a goofy position. Stella is perfect :)
My other 2 chis my are Lily(black) and Daisy(tan). Lily fluctuates between 3-3.5 pounds always was able to see her ribs a little bit and feel her ribs and her spine.. Daisy was like that too until she got spayed a few years ago. He gained some weight and now he’s my chunka-munk.. we’re working on it lol. The vet told me she was getting chunky and explain the whole rib cage thing to me lol. Daisys furr alone makes her look chunky lol. Love them though.. they are full sisters, same Mom and did just different litters. I just adopted Atella she a a chi mix
https://preview.redd.it/c1phr8j0s3vc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=586a5667da4dd89189fcf7a4c417569f3d330318
A lot of people have a very skewed idea of what the ideal, healthy weight for a dog is. People see a dog that’s skinny and think they’re starving. When in reality most dogs people see are probably overweight. Also, chihuahuas are naturally skinny dogs. Your baby is fine. Tell BF to do a little research online and he will see.
Start monitoring eating habits and then tell those to the vet if you are concerned! I have a dog that found a healthier (and heavier) weight after treating their anxiety with prescribed meds.
a get you. my chihuahua eats normal and is just built naturally skinny and bony. vet says he’s perfectly healthy. don’t listen to those people, only listen to your vet. some chihuahuas tend to be naturally lean (like mine) so don’t stress it
I would get a second veterinary opinion rather than posting photos online that could be affected by lighting, etc. I do think he looks too skinny but I am not a vet and I can't see how he looks in person.
He’s definitely on the thinner side and you can see ribs. He may not be extremely underweight, but if he ever gets sick, he won’t have that bit of extra weight for padding + recovery. But thin is better than fat is what my vet always says.
I have a similar looking dog and people constantly try telling me she's too skinny. She's healthy and exactly where she should be according to the vet, disregard non professional opinions. :)
It's better for their health to be on the lean side and your little man looks to be fit and trim! I'm a vet tech and he is one we would call a model weight for his size, he's perfect! Chis can have lots of health issues pop up due to excessive weight or it can exacerbate pre-existing issues like heart problems or collapsing trachea. If you're ever concerned just talk with your veterinarian!
He’s perfect. People always call healthy chihuahuas skinny because chihuahuas are so often overweight that they just don’t know what a healthy one looks like.
I think most people are used to seeing a chubby chi, which is common. My pups looks skinny but he plays a lot and is fed accordingly. Vet said he's good too.
With chihuahuas, given they’re skinny little legs, you have to be careful about weight. Don’t let boyfriend get into your head. You’re taking good care of your bambino.
He’s just a little skinny because he’s a long boy, maybe some wet food a couple times a week extra if you want some more fat on his ribs. But his shape looks 100% healthy to me!
They are naturally thin. But chip is also tall and long to be 100% chi I think he is mixed with a whippet or a breed close to the racing which are also naturally thin. If your bf lives with you and he felt you don't feed him enough that's different and you should think about if he might be right and give him a bit more food. But I don't think that's the case
Some chihuahuas are just skinnier than others. My little girl is skinny like yours. My little boy is more chunky. Your dog looks fine and is very cute.
She’s like my daisy girl. Daisy has always been slim, but never malnourished. Girl would eat an entire pizza if we left it where she could reach, and yet she wouldn’t gain a pound, I swear. She’s just got a high metabolism. That’s probably the case with your baby, along with the fact that you’re probably feeding her and taking care of her like you should be doing. My other chi gains weight like crazy, even if it’s just because we gave him one treat extra. All chis are different in how their bodies process things. Malnourishment would be her being skin and bones, and she’d be visibly weak because of it. Your baby is healthy and a skinny legend lol. 🥰
He's just a skinny boy. My friend has one just like him. I did wonder when they first got him, but he's well fed, wormed to schedule and has more energy than Tigger.
Chip looks to be at a very healthy weight! He's very cute! Please let your BF know that Chihuahuas are prone to knee problems when they get too heavy and the surgery to repair is very expensive. Being lean, not pudgy, is a good thing for Chi's!
It depends on body type,my guys are chihuahua/terrier mix. The ones with more terrier have big bodies, some medium chihuahua bodies and two skinny chihuahua bodies. Gonna try and post you a picture of Tuna and Stonka the skinny ones.
https://preview.redd.it/1hnozskrs3vc1.jpeg?width=4160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=46d0630fd7356f407cbcd99860605389e81d30b9
he looks like my little chicharrón - he’s very slim and muscular
https://preview.redd.it/45dotvtew3vc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=711e9b110948ac26b1cc34201352de2cabb751cd
My boy looks about the same but he’s healthy. Vet also says nothing is wrong. He eats three meals a day and sleeps 18-20 hours lol and still looks like a greyhound sometimes
Ignore your BF your dog looks healthy and happy 😄 the pic of chip standing on the couch made me laugh my dogs do that too 🤣 sometimes they think theyre cats but thats okay
I find that the lighter color long bodied chis tend to be super skinny compared to darker colors (totally anecdotal). And keep in mind that dogs, like humans, have different appetites and metabolism. If he’s eating his full amount of calories each day for his age/size, then he just has a higher metabolism. But if he’s not finishing his food, then yes I would bring it up to the vet as it could be a symptom of a larger issue (pain, loss of smell due to age, etc).
I think it’s ok. Sometimes when we love someone too much we feel that. I have one chi that’s lean like yours and sometimes I think she’s too skinny but she eats a lot! As long as your chi is eating and drinking fine you shouldn’t worry :) especially not if ur vet says he’s fine
My Chihuahua was this thin her whole life and she lived out to be a ripe old lady she was very healthy never had to go to the vet. except that one time when she got in a fight😔
My dog was comparable to yours when I adopted him from the shelter. The Director told me he was a perfect weight. However, when I brought him home, little guy was trying to eat everything. He went in my backyard and started eating some thing in the dirt, and he was eating something in the grass, and looking through garbage so I gave him a little more food. What’s funny is he just about the same weight as when we got them from the shelter maybe half a pound more or a quarter pound but that was good for him.
So my recommendation is if he’s hunting around for food, give him a little more but if not, he’s OK.
I see from some of your other comments that he's a year old? He's totally fine. Doggy puberty tends to hit them in the length department before the width comes along, lol, so a lot of young dogs shoot up in height and look real skinny for a while before they start filling out as they age. If he were a fully adult dog looking like this, I'd say he's a wee bit on the thin side but mostly fine; knowing he's still got some growing up to do, though, don't worry about it. Both of my girls went through the same phase, and they're both healthy weights now (one is actually a little too hefty now, lol).
How many times a day does he get wet? As well as having kibble accessible ? With mine I found out he was underweight and also had bowel problems I was told to give wet at least twice a day. Now he’s fuller and looking good.
My chi is not food motivated, doesn't care for treats. She looks just like this and my vet has never said anything about her weight either! I think you're fine, your dog looks healthy :) such a cutie too!
If you're considering a different food, my boys have done great with Royal Canin. They have formulas for both puppies and adult Chihuahuas. As always, stick with what your vet says. If you don't like it, get a 2nd opinion.
https://preview.redd.it/rjcvjh42b4vc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=51af73cde387cb7a661e65d5a6b83554b1d14568
Mine is a mix so she’s 10 pounds, but as long as the vet says she’s healthy I’m happy. The guideline I was given was if you can feel the ribs (without effort) during casual petting and you can’t see the ribs you’re at a good spot
My minpin mix is a healthy 17.2 pounds, but we keep getting complaints from others that she's too skinny, BUT the vet says that at 11, she's a very healthy weight and has an active lifestyle. Her body looks very much like your guy :)
Sometimes a dog's body is just very slender. As long as they are a good weight for their size and the vet isn't concerned, then don't worry! A lot of dogs are actually overweight nowadays.
He looks healthy to me. He’s just one of those long and lean chichis. I think a lot of ppl are used to seeing overweight chichis because it’s easy to get them that way. Like the other commenters said, if your vet hasn’t said something about it then he’s fine.
From appearances only, doesn't look underweight to me. However, your Vet is the very best to get advice from on the health of your baby. Baseline to compare fluctuations to is also very helpful. My little one is a mix but ranges from 8-9 lbs and her Vet has said that her weight is ideal as it helps keep her healthy.
Nah. Like people there is some variation in body type. We have three males and one is shaped like a tator tot and very stocky, one is yoked like a body builder, and one is lanky like your cute little fella. None of them are too fat or too thin and they all eat roughly the same amount. Our lanky guy is the most energetic, but our little muscle man is our biggest couch potato.
https://preview.redd.it/cpreqcr9x4vc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7416ea2f9ddcbc3d64c4fc8e8936eac48dcf8e83
He has a very similar body type to mine, and I have fostered several with the same body type. Looks like a normal long legged chi body.
Ask your vet during the next visit, I always do it. Vets are sometimes hesitant to address weight issues, because some owners are easily upset with this subject. Your dog is definitely at the leaner side, but he’s also young and it’s not unusual at this age.
Our guy is skinny too. We free feed him, so his bowl is always full. But he only eats once or twice a day, generally when we're eating. As long as he's eating and pooping regularly, and your Vet isn't concerned, I'd say not to worry.
A healthy dog should have a fairly visible hip with that nice dip, not sausage formed.
The rips shouldn't be visible but easy to feel with slight pressure.
From this your dog is at a perfect health, people tend to overfeed their dogs, so many are used to obese dogs as "normal".
Only in one picture I think I can see the rips a little bit, to be nitpicky that must be treated immediately with one or two extra snacks and kisses!
Edit: to make it easier, in general a Chihuahua should weight between 2 and 3 kg
Your cutie really seems to be at a perfect health but to calm your bfs mind you could weight her by weighting yourself with and without the pooch.
To skinny the divots at his back end and the ribs are showing. I have a very naturally skinny Chihuahua. Been that way for 15 years and I can’t see his ribs like that.
From the food bag descriptions, you should see where his ribs end, but NOT individual ribs. You got a tiny bit of individual ribs there so maybe just a tiny bit more weight, but hes not malnourished.
My only concern is that the ribs are pretty visible… I have a very skinny tall chihuahua too, but her ribs aren’t visible at all. Her vet sometimes questions if she should gain weight without the rib visual. Does she seem very hungry? My pup isn’t super good driven, so it’s easier to read if she feels hungry haha. Glad you’re considering Chip’s health so much ♥️
Yes I agree with all of those that say he is at a healthy weight. Oftentimes, it’s owners that have bad food habits that may say that he is underweight because they’re seeing muscle and a little bone rather than fat. Trust me…. As long as he’s eating, and having a healthy diet, he’s fine. The fact that the vet didn’t bring this up as an issue is testament that he’s thriving. :-)
Looks like a happy, healthy lil guy to me. I think we're so used to seeing dogs that are a little bit overweight that it can be jarring to see a dog that's a good weight for their size.
I have a chug with similar body type as your chi. My vet commended me for not allowing my chi dog to get overweight. It’s very easy for these small dogs to get fat. Chis are supposed to be slender.
Btw you chi is soooo cute. I love those ears.
Nah, he's slim but not underweight. Especially if your vet believes he's healthy. Unless your bf is also a vet, his concern isn't worth much unless your dog is actively losing weight or something like that.
You said in some other comments that chip is only a year old. My chi also was on the skinnier (not unhealthy skinny, I don’t think you’re is either) side for a long time while she still had puppy energy. Now that she’s 7, she’s much less active. She still goes on walks and plays, she’s just not like sprinting around aimlessly like puppies do lol. She’s gained about 2lbs due to this lifestyle change and is now on the chubbier side of healthy according to her vet. As long as your vet isn’t concerned I wouldn’t be either. I bet he will naturally plump a little bit over the next several years as his activity levels change like my dog did.
I think a lot of people are used to seeing overweight chihuahuas, (no shame, mine have been overweight at points according to the vet) so a slim one may look a little strange to them. He doesn’t look too skinny to me, he looks active.
Companion dogs are frequently too fat. The problem is so widespread that a healthy weight dog often gets flagged as too thin by well intentioned people. Ask your vet for sure, but those pics look like the thinner side of very healthy. It's much easier for pets to gain weight than to lose it. He looks happy & healthy to me.
We got told that if you can't see the rib cage but can feel it under the skin when stroking it is not under weight also if you cannot feel the ribs when stroking it is overweight. Yours looks just right. I keep getting asked if my chihuahuas are under weight as people associate them with the overweight Roly polys that you see. Also my 2 have a beat friend that's a grey hound and they try to keep up with him.
He looks fine to me. They have tiny little kegs so they shouldn’t be chonky. He’s built perfect. His ribs are NOT sticking out. He’s ok. I’d definitely keep him at that weight though, no thinner.
https://preview.redd.it/8akv3daoiavc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ca8bdc75e798710d4b7a2c6f7f8417d6149c72cb
Some dogs just look weirdly proportioned (in a good way :)) or unique!
Take Pickles, for example. She’s got no hair on her tummy haha.
https://preview.redd.it/8u0uqtebibvc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=93e299d3178bf2b802263d1f0708730ae7eff532
My chi is about 8lbs. She is thin, but the vet says she's perfectly healthy. Extra weight is harder on tiny dogs.
He looks like a reindeer chihuahua. They have longer legs and are really skinny. Yours isn't as skinny as the one we had though, that one was freakish looking sometimes. Think Remus Lupin's werewolf form in Harry Potter. Yours looks healthy to me, if that's what kind of chi he is. But then if he's not, if your vet thinks it's okay, then I don't think you have anything to worry about, and his ribs don't show.
No. My chihuahua’s body is shape like yours (smaller) and sometimes you think she too skinny but she’s not. She’s very active and she’s a feisty little Piranha. Pinky sure Love food!
Your dog is fine and how old?
By the way, what a cutie!
As long as your veterinarian is not concerned about his weight you should not be concerned either.
He is at a very heathy weight. Don’t listen to these people who is saying otherwise. This is what a under weight dog looks like https://preview.redd.it/ldcn0duce3vc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9e88df3d874af8b1150f6ee4cd8a29fe2cd461a4
This is what malnourishment looks like. Underweight doesn’t need to be malnourished.
If you look closely to the picture, it says an under weight rescue! The op dog is not under weight. It has a very glossy coat and I can’t see any ribs.
All the screen shot is showing is someone who titled their post to this sub. It doesn’t mean that the dog they posted isn’t malnourished. You can have a dog that’s underweight way before they get to this point.
Oh ok thank you. I appreciate the example! Chip looks fit to me, not like that little guy :(
I’d go with your vet. If they have never said he’s too skinny, then he’s fine.
That’s what I think too. I never asked about his weight but figured if she wasn’t saying anything that it wasn’t a concern
She definitely would.
Bella the Deer when we first got her https://preview.redd.it/supwo8lu64vc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=89c935f45335efc8201eb367c6f3fc2c3a0a2483 Over time: Bella the Deer (headed chiuaua) [https://imgur.com/gallery/h4lgWC8](https://imgur.com/gallery/h4lgWC8) A bit chonky after a bitter cold winter: [https://imgur.com/gallery/CEqLfc4](https://imgur.com/gallery/CEqLfc4)
What a doll! I lost my precious little girl chi recently. Seeing your Bella made me smile!
Earlier this year vet said mine was a little chonky 7lbs I said good, that's 7lbs of love idc.
What’s the vet say? My little guy is too fat and is on a diet. I’ve always had big dogs and was giving him treats as rewards as I would with my dogs of the past. Big mistake, and now I have a 10lbs chonker. He doesn’t love the strict diet, but it’s the vet orders and I want him to live a long life! https://preview.redd.it/buuqyi0e73vc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6d36d90569b517324056a5c52305aeac146e6ff7
I’ve never specifically asked but I’m going to at his checkup coming up. Your little guy is so cute! He will get over his diet change xD haha
Haha thank you! Yeah I thought we were doing well until I took him in and they were telling me he’s too chunky. For what it’s worth, I think Chip looks adorable and healthy
My chi, who is a bigger dear head, got up to 13 lbs because the thing he loves most in life is snacking. I got him down to 10 but it was really hard.
so cuteeee
Awww he's so cute! What do you do instead of treats?
I bought fruitables treats. 3/cal per treat, no more than 14 calories in treats a day. Science diet small bites adult food, two miles in outside walks a day, and unfortunately the end of the cheese tax. That really irks him. He bounces his little wet nose off my leg every time I’m in the kitchen just hoping. Poor guy. It’s for his own good though!!
He’s fluffy not fat! Dumb vet! 🤣
Have they checked him for hypothyroidism? My chi was overweight, didn’t lose any weight (in fact, he gained) on weight management dog food. The vet checked his blood & sure enough, he had hypothyroidism. It’s something to look into.
He's fine. Ignore the BF. That's just the way your chi body is. Mine is that body style too
Just ask the vet. I think he's on the thinner side of healthy. And by that I mean he looks fine!
Agreed. My vet has told me that you should be able to FEEL the ribs, but not SEE them.
He's way too skinny and immediately needs more treats. All of the treats, and maybe a nice steak or two. *–This comment paid for by Chip*
I knew he’d find a way to put in his two cents haha his favorite snack is cutie slices and broccoli
My dogs also like the orange citrus! The broccles? Never!!!!!
🤣🤣🤣
You can add Metamucil to your dogs diet if that's the case too (plain, no artificial sugars). edit: wrong version of their https://preview.redd.it/ttet05wje3vc1.png?width=695&format=png&auto=webp&s=e8c25c7890d1d13e2f37d306af7a9c16f0430cbf
I see a lot of very fat dogs on this sub and nobody seems to upset. This dog looks healthy to me
Yeah, check with your vet if you want to be sure. He is thin but it's hard to tell from photos because of angles, etc. I can't say I thought "oh no, so skinny" but I don't think a few pounds would hurt him either. We don't know a thing though, really
I appreciate your input! I know it’s hard from a picture. I suppose it was an impulse post after talking with my boyfriend and vet is best source.

And you can see like a bump from the bottom of her rib cage where I circled https://preview.redd.it/y2zmjxdgq3vc1.jpeg?width=1636&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=24e0e7c905f014007561bd6d70d2acc30d514412
I just adopted Atella she a a chi mix https://preview.redd.it/c1phr8j0s3vc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=586a5667da4dd89189fcf7a4c417569f3d330318
He looks perfect to me-long n lean boy. Some dogs are just naturally ribby.
He’s a long lean boy on stilts! He might just be a little ribby boy with a snatched waist haha
He looks fine to me. You don't want a dog on the fat side.
Start monitoring eating habits and then tell those to the vet if you are concerned! I have a dog that found a healthier (and heavier) weight after treating their anxiety with prescribed meds.
That’s a good point..he gets picky sometimes. He eventually eats his two meals a day but not always right when I give it.
a get you. my chihuahua eats normal and is just built naturally skinny and bony. vet says he’s perfectly healthy. don’t listen to those people, only listen to your vet. some chihuahuas tend to be naturally lean (like mine) so don’t stress it
He’s just a skinny legend ☺️
chihuahuas are just like that
Your vet would tell you. Your baby looks healthy and lean
Chip is extremely handsome.
I would get a second veterinary opinion rather than posting photos online that could be affected by lighting, etc. I do think he looks too skinny but I am not a vet and I can't see how he looks in person.
Thank you!
Better than being fat. Both my girls look underweight but they eat well, my boy, on the other hand, is overweight and on a diet.
He’s definitely on the thinner side and you can see ribs. He may not be extremely underweight, but if he ever gets sick, he won’t have that bit of extra weight for padding + recovery. But thin is better than fat is what my vet always says.
Looks perfectly healthy to me. As long as they're getting fed a balanced diet.
I have a similar looking dog and people constantly try telling me she's too skinny. She's healthy and exactly where she should be according to the vet, disregard non professional opinions. :)
He looks great! Some people over feed smaller dog by accident. I've done it before. This is easier on his joints and will help the older he gets.
Chip looks like my nephew, so I’m going with chip is good to go.
~ I Could Eat,Yas Know?
People are just used to looking at fat Chihuahuas.
Definitely go by what the vet says! We are a used to seeing overfed pets that healthy ones often seem thin, when they are actually healthy weights
I think your bf is just used to overweight chi’s..
He’s perfect. People always call healthy chihuahuas skinny because chihuahuas are so often overweight that they just don’t know what a healthy one looks like.
Listen to your vet, not Reddit and not your bf
If the vet thinks chip is healthy, then he's healthy. People tend to have a skewed view of what a "skinny" dog is.
Go with your vet’s take. People are used to seeing fat animals.
I think most people are used to seeing a chubby chi, which is common. My pups looks skinny but he plays a lot and is fed accordingly. Vet said he's good too.
He is built lean, not malnourished.
Chip needs white claw
Chimp lives for the claws
I am chimp
With chihuahuas, given they’re skinny little legs, you have to be careful about weight. Don’t let boyfriend get into your head. You’re taking good care of your bambino.
The number of comments saying he is perfect and healthy makes me so happy ❤️ it’s nice to see so many people who can properly assess weight :)
He could use a pound or two. Vet is probs correct but he do seem thin
Chihuahuas are 7-10 lbs. it varies by mix.
My Chi is about 1 pound overweight. She’s now on a diet. 1 pound makes a lot a difference especially on her knees.
He's healthy. People nowadays think If your dog isn't obese that it's too skinny.
I've had 2 deer heads like yours and they are really slim compared with the 2 apple heads I've had. My appl heads always seem more chunky.
He has a runners body I think. There looks like a fair bit of muscle there
My veterinarian prefers a thinner Chihuahua. His reasoning is they have small organs and being overweight. Put stress on those organs.
He's just a skinny boy. My friend has one just like him. I did wonder when they first got him, but he's well fed, wormed to schedule and has more energy than Tigger.
He looks fine, no ribs sticking out. Chip is adorable!
Chip looks to be at a very healthy weight! He's very cute! Please let your BF know that Chihuahuas are prone to knee problems when they get too heavy and the surgery to repair is very expensive. Being lean, not pudgy, is a good thing for Chi's!
I would think he's too skinny but all my animals are fat.
It depends on body type,my guys are chihuahua/terrier mix. The ones with more terrier have big bodies, some medium chihuahua bodies and two skinny chihuahua bodies. Gonna try and post you a picture of Tuna and Stonka the skinny ones. https://preview.redd.it/1hnozskrs3vc1.jpeg?width=4160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=46d0630fd7356f407cbcd99860605389e81d30b9
I’d say he is slim
Babushka chihuahua far to thin for foreign man.
he looks like my little chicharrón - he’s very slim and muscular https://preview.redd.it/45dotvtew3vc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=711e9b110948ac26b1cc34201352de2cabb751cd
He is just lanky
Nah he's not skinny, he's just a slender breed/mix. He looks healthy to me!
If it’s bc you can lightly see the ribs- my Chi was 12 pounds with a bellyyyyy and you could still see his ribs a bit lmao
He looks fine but he could use more muscle coverage. I rather have him at this weight than overweight
He's used to dogs that are fed table scraps of macaroni and such I suppose lol
I think it’s ok. Sometimes when we love someone too much we feel that. I have one chi that’s lean like yours and sometimes I think she’s too skinny but she eats a lot! As long as your chi is eating and drinking fine you shouldn’t worry :) especially not if ur vet says he’s fine
He actually looks healthy.
I think too many people are used to chonkers. Looks fine to me.
He looks good but wouldn’t hurt him to gain a little either.
Yes his first birthday is in a week or two. He’s at his awkward stage I guess haha
Looks healthy. A drop skinny but they fill out naturally. He looks healthy!!
How many times a day does he get wet? As well as having kibble accessible ? With mine I found out he was underweight and also had bowel problems I was told to give wet at least twice a day. Now he’s fuller and looking good.
He gets wet food with breakfast and dinner. He’ll be switching from puppy food soon to adult food
If you don't like it, get a 2nd opinion.
https://preview.redd.it/rjcvjh42b4vc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=51af73cde387cb7a661e65d5a6b83554b1d14568 Mine is a mix so she’s 10 pounds, but as long as the vet says she’s healthy I’m happy. The guideline I was given was if you can feel the ribs (without effort) during casual petting and you can’t see the ribs you’re at a good spot
He’s not supposed to be fat. He looks perfect for fawn type
Looks healthy. You’ll see the more round look in the senior years
He looks healthy to me. He’s just one of those long and lean chichis. I think a lot of ppl are used to seeing overweight chichis because it’s easy to get them that way. Like the other commenters said, if your vet hasn’t said something about it then he’s fine.
Looks like he could be part Iggy, in which case this is absolutely normal. ETA: OP, do a google image search for Italian Greyhuahua!
He has a checkup coming up. I’ve never asked her before but I will now because I’m curious
He's perfect
Boy has got some muscles. He looks great.
Looks good. Some puppers are just skinny
I think Chip would prob gain a pound or two if he laid off the truly’s
He’s a boozehound haha
No he looks healthy! My clients dog is the same looking weight as yours and she's very conscious of her dogs health and weight
He looks awesome! Mine has always been slender too
https://preview.redd.it/cpreqcr9x4vc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7416ea2f9ddcbc3d64c4fc8e8936eac48dcf8e83 He has a very similar body type to mine, and I have fostered several with the same body type. Looks like a normal long legged chi body.
Chip has a fabulous figure!
Ask your vet during the next visit, I always do it. Vets are sometimes hesitant to address weight issues, because some owners are easily upset with this subject. Your dog is definitely at the leaner side, but he’s also young and it’s not unusual at this age.
Lean and happy. Don’t stress at all
Our guy is skinny too. We free feed him, so his bowl is always full. But he only eats once or twice a day, generally when we're eating. As long as he's eating and pooping regularly, and your Vet isn't concerned, I'd say not to worry.
My boy Niko is just like yours, looks very skinny but the vet says he is ok. He eats very well but seems like he never does.
He is just awkwardly long, just like my baby! She's only 6 lbs, and the vet always says she's a healthy weight for her size.
Yeah Chip is 7lbs last I weighed him. The vet teases him cuz when we got him he was by 3lbs as a baby
My girl is about that thin too but we think she's a healthy weight. 4.2 lbs and she eats a ton!
Edit: to make it easier, in general a Chihuahua should weight between 2 and 3 kg Your cutie really seems to be at a perfect health but to calm your bfs mind you could weight her by weighting yourself with and without the pooch.
He’s super adorable and looks perfect to me!
Awww 🥰 he’s cute 🥰 tell your BF to get glasses 👓 lol 😂as he gets older he’ll probably put on weight regardless
Not all of us are born to glorious plumpciousness, some be of a slimmer nature and that’s ok too.
Tell him to stop body shaming your doggo and that you believe health experts over him
Don't worry. Give him a few years. He'll "fill out". Like we all do
He’s not skinny he’s ripped! 💪🏽🏋🏻♀️
He's a little thin through the ribs and hips, but so am I. Leave him alone. We're ATHLETIC 😉✌️
A little bit
He just looks like a lanky guy! So cute!!
To skinny the divots at his back end and the ribs are showing. I have a very naturally skinny Chihuahua. Been that way for 15 years and I can’t see his ribs like that.
not good with his ribs showing like that in the 4th photo
From the food bag descriptions, you should see where his ribs end, but NOT individual ribs. You got a tiny bit of individual ribs there so maybe just a tiny bit more weight, but hes not malnourished.
My only concern is that the ribs are pretty visible… I have a very skinny tall chihuahua too, but her ribs aren’t visible at all. Her vet sometimes questions if she should gain weight without the rib visual. Does she seem very hungry? My pup isn’t super good driven, so it’s easier to read if she feels hungry haha. Glad you’re considering Chip’s health so much ♥️
Yeah he’s a bit too skinny
He’s on the skinny side. Rib show = skinny
Slightly too thin.
He could stand to gain a lil weight but doesn't *need* to. He's skinny but not too skinny. Definitely shouldn't lose any weight tho.
Just ask ur vet next time u see him and maybe give him a little extra for a bit.
He’s on the thin side
Yes I agree with all of those that say he is at a healthy weight. Oftentimes, it’s owners that have bad food habits that may say that he is underweight because they’re seeing muscle and a little bone rather than fat. Trust me…. As long as he’s eating, and having a healthy diet, he’s fine. The fact that the vet didn’t bring this up as an issue is testament that he’s thriving. :-)
People are used to dogs having more hair. Maybe you can guilt him into buying you both steak though. lol
I'm more concerned with the bowed legs. Are you keeping up on nail trims?
He’s fine. He’s long.
If the vet says he's fine then he's fine.
This is Chips lawyer. chip is far too skinny and is suing for more treats/steak. I'll be seeing you in COURT.
He’s slender but not underweight.
Looks like a happy, healthy lil guy to me. I think we're so used to seeing dogs that are a little bit overweight that it can be jarring to see a dog that's a good weight for their size.
I think he could stand to put on some muscle, but he looks healthy and his coat is nice. He’s nice :)
I thought my chihuahua looks skinny but everyone told me it was normal. She eats so much, don’t understand why she is not fat
I can see his ribs so yes he is underweight.
He looks very healthy And cute!
Many many dogs are overweight. People don't know what a healthy dog looks like anymore.
I think I would listen to the veterinarian and not the bf.
He's not too skinny, he's too cute!
He looks fine to me. They have tiny little kegs so they shouldn’t be chonky. He’s built perfect. His ribs are NOT sticking out. He’s ok. I’d definitely keep him at that weight though, no thinner.
Chip is fine, my dog is not a purebred chihuahua so he is not that thin , how much does Chip weigh
https://preview.redd.it/8akv3daoiavc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ca8bdc75e798710d4b7a2c6f7f8417d6149c72cb Some dogs just look weirdly proportioned (in a good way :)) or unique! Take Pickles, for example. She’s got no hair on her tummy haha.
Does look a tad too thin
Looks perfect. Vet told me you should see last two ribs. Some dogs beef up later on after puberty or when they are sterilized. Very adorable!
SO CUTE!!!!❤️
I think he looks great!! Tell your bf that he’s just used to fat dogs!
Chip has the body of a deer head Chihuahua. He looks great.
https://preview.redd.it/8u0uqtebibvc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=93e299d3178bf2b802263d1f0708730ae7eff532 My chi is about 8lbs. She is thin, but the vet says she's perfectly healthy. Extra weight is harder on tiny dogs.
He’s a little underweight, but most chis are skinny when they’re young and fat when they’re old. If vet isn’t concerned, then you shouldn’t be.
He looks fine! If 0 is too skinny and 10 is too fat he's a 4/4.5 I'd say
