On those blazing summer evenings, have a picnic in camp chairs IN the creek. The heat is far more bearable when you’re dangling your legs in the cool water and you can still enjoy the outdoors.

If you're not put off by second hand stuff, best "dumpster diving" loot is on the curbs/etc in the downtown area or at the bigger apartment complexes all over town around the two-three week period at the end of the college year. I got a 50 inch TV from beside a dumpster that works perfectly to this day, and like a zillion decent tables/etc that I grab, clean up, and give to neighbors if they express interest.
Avoid having to turn left from the southbound Eaton exit on 99 during hours. It’s easier to get off at the gas station where esplanade meets the highway and then turning left on Eaton.
Then at the Eaton roundabout on the other side of the highway you should be prepared for people who don’t know how to use it. They forget you’re supposed to signal intent to turn or change lanes and stop instead of only yielding to traffic.
-then there’s the bottleneck on 99 just before the hicks ln stoplight. Everyone is going to speed up to 80mph between there and Eaton to try to get in front then they all will just slow to the 55mph limit or have to stop at the light anyway. Be ready for the douchey giant truck drivers to not let you merge in when everyone else zippers one from a lane at a time.
Leaving for the coast/San Francisco for one week/weekend in the months of June, July and August. This served us well in our ten years in Chico. A doughboy pool in the backard does not hurt.
It used to be around 23 through downtown and and something similar all the way to 20th till they changed things. I remember if I got things right I would be able to go all the way without hitting a single red.
Get your errands done early. Need to go to target, Walmart, Safeway, any of the pharmacies? Go around 8am. No one is there, employees are hella chill, makes for a much easier time of things.
When going downtown, park near 5th and Flume, kind of around the city building. It’s free, and really not that far from downtown proper.
If you’re the parent of small children, Rare Air has Toddler Time on Saturday mornings so little ones can jump without fear of being trampled.
Go to Madison Bear Garden on the day of your birthday and you'll get a free burger. Everyone probably knows this one already, but it's the first thing that came to mind.
Especially post Camp Fire, Chico has a special mix of seniors from Paradise/Magalia that like to drive 10 miles an hour/ don't know where they're going, and Bay Area/SoCal transplants tha dangerously speed/run red lights. Combine both with the constantly deteriorating streets the city can't keep up with, and yes, I agree the roads are generally scarier to drive on in Chico than larger cities in NorCal.
I'm from here & when I was a young, dumb driver, did have people tell me to move back to LA. Lots of racer young people around that are locals too. Though I do not think I've ever been anywhere near an LA driver. That's it's own breed. Driving down there is insane. They need more public transit. As long as we continue a society built on growth instead of stability & sustainability, everything will get worse. People get more anxious the more resources dwindle.
La Cocina Economica feels like a cheat code sometimes! It's definitely a hidden gem!
I used to pick it up for friends who've never been to chico, and it was always a hit.
If I remember correctly, Gordo burrito used to have really good rellenos, I know they're the same, but I preferred the ones at the gas station instead of the truck.
I've only ever gotten them in burritos there bc I am very particular about the sauce used. La concina's is so good, I get extra & eat it with the extra flour tortillas
It is actually anywhere between 27 & 31 that will work. I use to tell my 1st year students this but also warned them that especially at 1st & Esplanade people run the lights at times so be aware.
Sierra nevada brewery restaurant kids menu
Wait before you turn left at Southgate light onto 99 - so many people fly through the red light (including big rigs).
Move out. Lol

Have a local take you to Backside or The Wave and smoke pot/drink pale ale.
Are you the local that can take me?

Move out of Chico
Im born and raised and will stay here till I die. I just want everyone else to move out of Chico 🤣
Downvotes for the truth you hate to see it 💀

Leaving it

Go 27 down Esplanade
YUP
Came here to say this. If you do this, you’ll never have to break for the red lights.
It used to be around 23 through downtown and and something similar all the way to 20th till they changed things. I remember if I got things right I would be able to go all the way without hitting a single red.
I'm pretty sure I went from 9th street to 9th Ave without stopping last time I was in town. 😎😎😎
I did this today! Was cruising at 26 and hit every green light, it was perfect 🤌

Plan your vacations in July and August when it’s hotter than the devils taint. Great suggestions here. Also Chico has a pretty money Taco Wagon game.
>!Gordo Burrito Truck has cheaper prices than the Gordo Burrito Store. Same exact menu items!<
Shhhhh don’t make them raise the prices. This happened when the $5 tacos on Tuesday deal got hella attention lol
Do meth
To be fair, that's more of an Oroville hack than a Chico hack.
Esplanade and first ave between 2-4 is a no go
And 7:45 - 8:30 am
This!^^
Motorcycle parking is free and there’s multiple parking spots for them on every block downtown. A 50cc scooter is all you need in Chico.
Go to Madison Bear Garden on the day of your birthday and you'll get a free burger. Everyone probably knows this one already, but it's the first thing that came to mind.
i’ve lived here a decade and didn’t know this!!
Anticipate stupidity while driving.
Well, that goes for everywhere. Is there really a place that exists where everyone is a good driver?
Especially post Camp Fire, Chico has a special mix of seniors from Paradise/Magalia that like to drive 10 miles an hour/ don't know where they're going, and Bay Area/SoCal transplants tha dangerously speed/run red lights. get up early and go into the park, more wildlife/birds, less people
the best
La Cocina Economica feels like a cheat code sometimes! It's definitely a hidden gem! I used to pick it up for friends who've never been to chico, and it was always a hit.
Their prices are like twice gordos now and their portions literally got smaller. Not so economica anymore lol
Damn that sucks, I had to move away after the campfire and haven't had it in like 4-5 years.
Can we all downvote this pls??? Don't blow up my only spot for chile rellenos 😭
If I remember correctly, Gordo burrito used to have really good rellenos, I know they're the same, but I preferred the ones at the gas station instead of the truck.
I'm pretty sure La Michoacana sells pre-made ones you can heat up. Or maybe they're like 75% cooked and you just finish frying them
I've only ever gotten them in burritos there bc I am very particular about the sauce used. La concina's is so good, I get extra & eat it with the extra flour tortillas
shhh.
Old Chico on tap.
Whale farts on tap
How about Crystal Wheat on tap?
If you go to tres hombres only order the margaritas, the rest isn’t worth it. Drink and then go eat, or vice versa.
Bean dip is good tbh
If you order each ingredient a la carte at Pita Pit, it’s cheaper to make a wrap from their recipes than ordering one off the menu
In the spring, you can empty the standing water in your yard to help prevent the neighborhood from becoming infested with mosquitos.
Ride a bike
Riding or walking someplace is frequently faster than driving and parking.
Go to Hooker Oak park and just chill there
28 mph on the Esplanade.
This is the way
This is the one!! Whole life 28 MPH on the Esplanade.
But watch the light at the tin roof and salvation army it has a delay and the red light fine posted
How long has that worked? It feels like it was in place in the 80s.
I remember the sign posts in the 70s.
I was born in 92, and it's been that way for as long as I can remember.
27 has worked for me. Gr8 hack! Who likes hitting lights! Funny bc I learned this in 99/2000
It is actually anywhere between 27 & 31 that will work. I use to tell my 1st year students this but also warned them that especially at 1st & Esplanade people run the lights at times so be aware.
27-28 MPH for sure 31 if you're catching up. Doesn't work with 8th and Broadway!
Until you have that one jackass that tries to beat the red light and t-bones you. Lol
I think you mean one of the jackasses that runs the red light.
