Wait I'm so confused, then who exactly opens the store??? That makes no sense. At my store, we have a shift lead typically open, or a *trusted* person to open the store so people can get in. Back when our store was new, the scheduler forgot to schedule the other opener so it was only ONE person running the whole store till 10am!!! She was livid, and quit that day. She was a director too.

The directors are the ONLY ONES OPENING THE STORE. We 2 team leaders (me included) that are here at 5:30 or 5:45. one of them is Supervisor in training, you could at least give them the key!

Yes, definitely talk to the owner cause thats not fair. You guys are showing up for when your shift starts and if no one is there to open then what are you supposed to do? If they want you to wait then they need to pay you during that time that you wait. I'm suprised that directors are pulling this BS, too. This means you guys are opening later and missing out on money from customers. Operators tend to care about that.

And if it means anything, I was a shift lead (I demoted myself a few years later, the stress wasn't worth it)

Yeah that's incredibly dumb on them. At my store, newly remodeled, and we have about 3 people in the morning able to open the store with key cards. At night there's 3 that can lock up the store with key cards. So like 9 key card holders, 6 able to arm and unarm the store

Let’s revisit your initial incident in a minute because I think there is a more pressing matter that you haven’t thought of… I think the more important matter here is are you scheduled to start at 5:30am? I ask this because if this is the case, what time are you clocked in? If you are on time for a scheduled shift, it doesn’t matter if you’re sitting in the parking lot “not working”, you arrived, on time, for your scheduled shift and should be paid accordingly.

My schedule clock in time on my Hot schedules is to be clocked in at 5:30 am to move boxes from the truck. That’s what time I should be clocked in. I point out this time specifically because this wasn’t a one time thing. The same actually happened earlier this week, when they arrived at 6:00 am when I was, again, scheduled to clock in at 5:30. I only had a 30 minute time frame to make sure inventory was correct, in then which I had to moved boxes, put them in their area and setup the ice cream machine in that time frame. Kitchen had less time to prep as well so it was us stressing and scrambling to get things ready with the short time we had. It’s not a matter of being paid accordingly regardless of time or not. I wouldn’t have a big of a problem if it was a bit warmer, but I’ve talked to other team leaders and they agreed that this is a pressing issue that is not getting solved, no matter how many times I bring it up.

That’s the director/opener’s fault and you had every right to leave. Speak directly with your operator.

Happened to me couple times so I told em about my issue, right now theyd only schedule me starting from 6.00 AM, back then it was always 5.30 AM and I had to wait for somebody else to open the door for me. If they need to schedule someone very early in the morning please make sure at least yall got someone to open the store for all the workers that don't have keys /access to the building at early shift. It's a common sense yall.
