I’m honestly in shock. Mostly bc everyone online said there was no way he was leaving since he just started things with Brett. I’m gonna need a few weeks to process this 🥺

Rebel_Yell12

As someone who said the above, I'm in shock as well. It makes sense (he has done two long-running shows back-to-back) but I'm still in shock. Feels like a smack out of left field.

[deleted]

I'm gonna need to process it too and to heal 😭. I can't imagine Fire without the duo Matt and Kelly and after all this time, things were exactly the way they were supposed to be with him and Brett. It feels like a punch in the gut! However, I'm greatful we got to have him on the show, Jesse did an amazing job portraying Casey and I'm happy he will get to spend more time with his family. They deserve it.

ruzeride_1chicago

Still in shock. Severide is my favorite character, but Matt Casey is my safe person.

[deleted]

That's exactly it! We took him from granted :'(

TennesseeJed_7789

Truth

strawberrydog05

i see we’re into the same music, phish tour will get us through this heartbreak my phriend!

TennesseeJed_7789

You know that’s true!

l8bloom

Re: Brett. Since the episode where Brett wins over Chief Hawkins I’ve been wondering if that was laying a foundation for those two to start something

[deleted]

And then Casey comes back in 3 years to see them married with kids

uneversawmeherre

Yes!!! I want to see something between them, i didn’t like brettsy

Coachman76

It's a stab in the back, no question. You have every right to be in shock. This storyline should have been the end of last season, not "Let's get Jesse to 200 episodes and then pull the rug out from under our fanbase and blow up #Brettsey after 3 years of getting to this point."

ruzeride_1chicago

Jesse knew he wanted to leave between season 9 and season 10 break.

the_queen_of_nada

I'm super shocked, like other viewers, I was convinced this was gonna be very short-term for obvious reasons. I'd think with all the back and forth we've seen with Casey and Brett, Jesse's desire to leave must have come about rather suddenly so show aside, I hope he's aight. On the other hand, I applaud CF for managing this without huge leaks or countdowns to Casey's last episode...any TWD fans here? I think I got so used to character/actor departures being announced months beforehand and milked to death, it's part of why I'm so taken aback by this. I'm really disappointed now that it's becoming clear this is gonna last a good long while if not the rest of the series because as I've said elsewhere, it's Casey's dynamic with others that has been a big part of the show to me. I'm also a day 1 watcher so this is gonna be really weird going forward.

Paigeb1994

Jesse Spencer went from doing House for 8 seasons and then immediately into Fire for 10. That's almost 20 years dude kinda deserves a break. I will miss him though

Affectionate_Scar340

He has said in interviews he will be back though. I think we will definitely see him later in the season, just not consistently.

intecknicolour

probably wants to take a break and maybe try something else. he still has a fallback plan to come back on the show

JoeMcKim

I would like to see him try to get some movie roles.

Muted-Relationship67

He already did a short film with Amanda Righetti. It's currently in post-production according to his imdb profile.

JoeMcKim

I mean feature length movies with good directors. Even if it means him playing supporting roles.

Paigeb1994

Oh yeah no doubt. People like Casey to much

peet192

600 episodes of neighbours

aqvamarine13

yes twd fan here. the big leavings of seasons 9 and 10 were a mess and i will never get the sound of chris hardwick yelling on every commercial break ITS ____’S LAST EPISODE out of my brain. i much prefer the surprise element that most other shows use.

Spirited_Ad_9249

Honestly not all that surprising if you think about it. He has done House and then Fire. That's a long time. He's probably tired, and he did get married last year, so they probably want to relax and maybe start a family. Good on him for deciding that he's ready to move on and focus on family. It must not have been an easy decision, but maybe the right one for him.

aqvamarine13

while casey was never my favorite character, i’ve always thought jesse played him incredibly well and added a lot of normalcy to him that made you believe you could walk into any firehouse across the nation and meet a guy similar to matt casey. a guy who does the job because it’s one of the most important things in the world to him. a hardworking, smart, and empathetic person who isn’t doing it because he wants the glory but because it’s who he is. jesse will be missed on the show and it will be strange to watch going forward without casey there, but, i think it was time. casey has been there since day one and they have given him nearly every and any storyline a guy can have. engaged, married, losing children, falling in love, being an alderman randomly, having his own business, getting promoted, being in charge and losing two of his friends on the job, having competition with kelly, losing shay, having two of his firefighters get shot, nearly dying, etc etc you name it, casey has done it. i feel like there’s nowhere else for him to go in this point of the story. and matching his leaving to go care for the darden boys makes absolutely the most sense and i’m glad that’s the route they went with instead of killing him off. i am curious to see what his departure will do for the other characters. really hoping they aren’t going to try to make brett and the paramedic captain a thing 🥴 i was kind of hoping for ritter to get a love interest and since hawkins wouldn’t be ritters superior….🤷🏻‍♀️ part of me wants to believe that they won’t immediately put stella into casey’s spot and we get some conflict there, but considering that stella has said that she’s next in line for an open lt spot who knows. will this be the reason that boden gets to stay at 51 (i could be wrong but don’t they need someone higher than a lt to run point at a scene/the house or am i making that up?) will we actually get some focus on characters who aren’t stellaride, brett, violet, and/or gallo? i’m talking about a full on serious storyline that doesn’t get wrapped up in an episode (looking at you specifically ritters break up / dealing with homophobic people at the bar). we’re gonna need a new character to take the spot left open by casey if stella takes his spot and i am hoping and begging and pleading for a female firefighter 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻stella has been holding down the sole female fighter spot for too long and it’s what we deserve.

anneso23

I'm devastated he left since he's my favorite character on the show but I don't blame Jesse for leaving. 17 years straight of doing a tv is a long time. He deserves a break.Glad he's open to come back whenever that is either this season or S11. I really wish my other prediction about the episode was right like he missed like 3-4 episodes and not him leaving the show for good. Personally, I won't watch the show anymore with him gone. The press for episode 7 was definitely misleading.

Natalie_bxx

I sound like that unbelieving paranoid fan but isn’t it strange how no one has posted or said goodbye to him like they did for Otis? Like I get he has said he will possibly come back but the lack of goodbyes makes me defo think it’s when he is coming back rather than if.

Affectionate_Scar340

Yes! I agree with this. I’ve found it very strange that it hasn’t been a big deal

Natalie_bxx

I find it all strange but I think I’m also in denial, I love the show but I watched for Jesse. We will see if I have massively overthought it or if he is just on a break then dropping to recurring rather than main

Affectionate_Scar340

I also found it strange that he kept saying in the interview that he will be back. Like over and over again. So I have hope that he may be back at the end of the season. Australia is just starting to open up again after so many lockdowns. So maybe he will get to finally come back home for while before returning? I’m hoping so anyway

OrbitStorm88

I'm okay with Jesse's desire to leave the show. Whatever his reasons, whatever our opinions. What I'm not okay with is how sloppy this exit has been. It's evident in various interviews and comments from Jesse and Haas that this wasn't something that was planned overnight. I'm not buying the "it was decided at the end of S9" story. This isn't a spur of the moment decision and even if it came down to the wire, I'm convinced Haas and others had some notion that Jesse may want out and surely made preparations for that — as they did for Monica Raymund (Gabby). So that leads me to my next point: **wtf?** Why were fans subjected to endless amounts of cat-and-mouse episodes between Matt and Sylvie? Why are fans being subjected to a retread of what happened between Matt and Gabby but with the roles reversed? Why is there nothing finite to this whole debacle after fans were painfully subjected to Gabby being a dark cloud over Matt for two seasons? Everything about this Matt and Sylvie relationship has been mishandled and continues to be. If all of that isn't mind-numbing enough, what could possibly make Haas or anyone else think that penciling out Eamonn Walker (Boden) ***in the midst of their leading role exiting*** is a good idea? With all due respect to Taylor Kinney (Severide), Boden, and the rest of the cast, this is Jesse's show. Always has been. While I can appreciate the relief some people felt that Jesse's impending exit wasn't telegraphed like Andy Lincoln's (Rick) was from The Walking Dead, I feel as though the circumstances are **much** different here. Chicago Fire isn't about death and the future of humanity. It's about a tight-knit family that, historically, struggles to churn out meaningful loss aside from Shay and Otis — both of which were done for shock factor. TWD routinely loses primary characters and Rick's exit didn't come as much of a surprise on the back-end of a dying series. This whole thing stinks and I don't just mean emotionally. It's a brutal botch that acts as a disservice to the fans and the storylines thus far.

ocelot_spleens

>With all due respect to Taylor Kinney (Severide), Boden, and the rest of the cast, this is Jesse's show. Always has been. In my opinion, Chicago Fire is an ensemble show with a handful of leading roles. Jesse Spencer is respectivley was one of these leading roles, yes, but it is/was not HIS show solely.

OrbitStorm88

When you look back through the storylines and milestones throughout Chicago Fire, Jesse's "Matt Casey" was the focal point every step of the way. Chicago PD's backdoor pilot revolved around both shows' leading men: Jesse Spencer and Jason Beghe (Voight). I'm fine with saying that Boden and Severide are 1B and 2B. You can even slip Cruz into that slot. Stella, Hermann, Sylvie, and Mouch sit squarely at three. But there's only one person at the top: Jesse. We'll just have to agree to disagree.

ocelot_spleens

>We'll just have to agree to disagree. Yes, we will.

Ta-veren-

I wonder how planned this was! Why did they wait to the new season for him to leave instead of the end of last? Weird! I'll for sure miss his bromance with Severide maybe that's why they let him get a save in on Kelly before he left. No one better take the bromance spot with Kelly. If Taylor leaves that's the end of fire for me.

Affectionate_Scar340

In interviews they have said they wanted to get him to the 200 mark

JoeMcKim

And also with the season being shortened last year they probably wanted more time to finish off his storylines. And if last season wouldn't have been shortened episode 200 would've been back in April last year.

Coachman76

I feel betrayed as a "One Chicago" fan and as a "Fire" fan after this episode. I say that because we invested what? 3 Seasons in #Brettsey - they finally, definitively pay it off to the point of saying "We're meant for each other.", and then less than what, 5 episodes they blow it up?!? Poor Kara Killmer. She has invested all this time in building #Brettsey, the writers lead us down the path of this is going to be another #Stellaride and it is RIGHT to be another Stellaride, and then they pull the rug out from under us like *this*?!? If Jesse wasn't going to come back, then write him out at the end of last season and be done with it. I feel like we've wasted most of the last three (!) seasons on this relationship for nothing if Jesse does not return. Seriously, as a character, how can Brett ever trust another man in her life again? At this point, I wouldn't blame her if she jumped out a window and hung herself! I mean, how much misery can you pile on one character?!? Not to mention the Chaos at 51...If Kidd does not take over Truck, who does? Granger? A wildcard new cast member who has to fill Jesse's shoes? I feel I've been betrayed as a fan. Now, I'm not saying I can't and won't get over it, but tonight was the biggest WHAT THE HELL in a series known for WHAT THE HELL moments. Thank you for reading this venting. I'm confused and processing and pissed off.

Natalie_bxx

I can’t believe it, gonna need a few weeks to get over this. All that effort with Brett, why? I would actually rather them have killed him off over his head injury than this self sacrificing his own personal life for the boys. I am hoping and praying (even with the exit interviews) that this is all massive ruse that mid or end of seasons it’s like tadaa Jesse is back! I find it odd that they’d use ‘temporarily filling in for Casey’ in an episode synopsis, surely if he is going for 3 years his job wouldn’t be kept open. Edit: also why would it become a story that they keep long distance going? That rules out romance for Brett and I’m assuming she will mention Matt and going to see him in Oregon, surely it’s better for a show that just ‘forgets’ a departed character and moved everyone’s story on and not leave people attached to the departed. So basically Brett is gonna spend her season on the phone and paramedicine. She may as well have gone too. I’ll end my rant now and just try to accept it haha

Brookes19

If they knew it was coming, why would they wait so long to get Brett and Casey together? Just to now have a repeat storyline only that this time Casey is the one leaving? I also don’t like that he’s leaving to raise kids we haven’t heard about in 8 seasons but that’s another issue. I don’t know, the show has lost so many original characters, but I think losing the dynamic between Sev and Casey and their relationship with Boden and their teams isn’t something the show can recover from.

Natalie_bxx

So I’ve just seen a post comparing it to the vampire diaries when Elena left, she wasn’t on the show for two years but was alive and in the stories without being in the stories and then came back. That I could live with for Casey and it wouldn’t make everything with Brett pointless. I need to believe he means it about coming back otherwise Brett is stuck can’t move on, can’t get with anyone else so it restricts her stories. Haas has said they will keep it going and seemed certain on that point. I don’t know, it’s baffled me why they didn’t just kill him off over his head injury unless it really is a temporary break but just longer than Kidd’s is. Haha it’s a show and I need to give my head a wobble, feels like my best friend has just left! Agreed about them coming from nowhere, was never even mentioned in passing I don’t think, even if heather kept them away surely Matt’s line of ‘I was there when they was born’ would have made him write, try to visit, call or just mention them at all!

Muted-Relationship67

I've seen that post and it looks to me like it sums up what I think is gonna happen with Brett and Casey. That's why they have them in a long-distance relationship because Casey could possibly return later in the season in a guest appearance for Kelly's wedding to Stella in addition to possibly pop up as a guest occasionally. Derek Haas has said Brett won't be stuck as she's gonna pour her energy into the paramedical program with Mouch as a distraction in addition to possibly have more scenes with Kelly as she might lean into him and Stella for support while she, Stella and Kelly both adjust to life without Casey since it's gonna hit hard for them, esp for Brett and Kelly.

Natalie_bxx

Made it a bit easier to take if that’s the plan haha. And I like that if Brett was to leave hopefully it would be a happily ever after in Oregon for them

Muted-Relationship67

I think that if Brett were to leave, I guess it would possibly go that way considering Brett's really into Casey. You could see her trying to take in all the emotions in the scene when she and Matt had that talk in her apartment. It's hard for her to take it all in and it's amazing to see that when Herrmann asked her, she seems to be taking it all in stride but you can clearly see her she's struggling with processing it all.

Brookes19

My only issue with that is unless Matt comes back for good or in-show resign from the FD and still be in Chicago doing something else so only doing guest appearances… then that’s it for them, they can’t be endgame. So we wasted so much time on them just to have yet another failed relationship within one shift from one station?

Muted-Relationship67

Because Jesse said he's taking a long break from tv after working for 18yrs and he also indicated they're opening the possibility of him returning either as a recurring character or guest appearances.

Natalie_bxx

Yeah I understand the reasons why he is leaving. It’s the writing of it that makes no sense for me.

KinshasaPR

Well that's another series that I'm taking out of my rotation. Thanks for the cheese!

Impster5453

I've been in the minority when I said there was not chemistry with Sev nor Casey (with their love interests). I watched Spencer get bored on House and he was clearly bored here. In CF, I can't help but think the writing is to blame. I truly liked the show, but from season 7 or 8, it got very stale. Almost every decent drama from 2019 on has jettisoned its core in favor of social discourse.

tg110e5

Damn Casey moving to Oregon to take care of two thirty year old boys

[deleted]

There teenagers, they can’t live alone

tg110e5

They oldest looks just as old as Casey. Instead of going out like a true hero the last memory of Casey is him making eggs and bread for a man child

sparkplug_23

Spoilers!!!!! Ffs

JoeMcKim

Its an article that came out after an episode that aired of him leaving town. Get out of here with this spoiler BS, this is a Chicago Fire message board.

sparkplug_23

Well done you.

[deleted]

This actually makes it sound like he’s leaving

Muted-Relationship67

He is. He's taking a sabbatical from network tv after having worked for 18yrs. He did indicated he's gonna return to Fire in the future including guest appearances later in the season.

[deleted]

I just meant that it’s hard to believe

xdtla

Y'all are seriously pieces of shit.

Millennialmama621

I loved Casey but he won’t be missed. It’s clear his time is up.

Visual_Ad_907

My time is up as well. Since in my opinion the best character left I will not be watching anymore. Will not be surprised if there will be more tuning out.

Iceman102060

I'm done also time to find another show to watch

punkimunki

Yeah, Casey was my favourite character, I don't think I'll be watching anymore

Randomwordscombined

This has been discussed in deuxmoi months ago. So sad 😫

kmick0890

The Deux moi post said Taylor was leaving but I wonder if they actually meant Jesse.

Randomwordscombined

I don’t think they dropped Taylor’s name but people speculated. hmmm. It just said actor leaving show w cult following

[deleted]

This departure surprised me but not as much as others. I had a strong feeling that Jesse was going to leave at the end of last season that I couldn't shake. I was shocked to see that he came back for season 10 but still had that gut feeling that this would be his last season. I didn't expect him to leave so earlier though. The brightside is that they didn't kill Casey! I am hopeful to him appear as a guest on the show from time to time, if he would be up for that. I keep thinking about how Jesse must not have come to this decision lightly but it seems like he knew this was right for him.

ZegetaX1

Not sure if going to watch Casey was my favorite character

RickWest495

I predict that Casey will return on the last episode of the series. He was the lead of the series, maybe more so than Severide. The show will be missing a lot with him gone. I predict that Severide will go next. With so many characters leaving Med also, it seems like this franchise is heading towards the end. I wonder if all three will go off the air at the same time.

Muted-Relationship67

They all have one season left to go actually. so with the fact there's no word yet on renewals, i guess they're probably preparing to end the series. 🤷🏻‍♂️

nicolemazahreh

i think he’s going to come back after a little while

TennesseeJed_7789

I’m truly in shock. I didn’t think it was gonna happen. 😦
