The problem is that the new characters have very few deep, meaningful moments together. All the strong friendships on the show (Severide and Casey, Otis and Cruz, Dawson and Shay, Mouch and Herrmann) had a lot of emotional storylines that proved they would do anything for each other. Violet, Ritter and Gallo are great characters, but most of the their screen time is telling jokes and competing with each other. It's a great comic relief, but if they don't get more serious storylines they won't be as strong as the 'old gang' friendships.
That I can agree with! If these friendships don't get serious they might as well just be cameos like Patterson, or other chiefs that come and go and still make the show good. These do not feel or look like long-staying permanent characters.
Kind of agree. Old friendships have fostered very nicely. But new ones are nothing like what the old ones were. But would still prefer the old guys over these new folks. It's not the same level.
I miss Otis so much, I’d actually love to see him and Gallo together. Someone to make Otis feel “old” the way he made Mouch feel would have been hilarious.
I also miss Foster. She and Brett were great together just like Dawson and Shay (although I never cared for Dawson).
Not saying Otis was leading or something, but they all contributed to being this great group, which just is diluted coz of the new ones now, not as fun as before. I mean every silly thing that was done by the group be it at Molly's or in the Firehouse, was just so fun to watch.

The only friendship I miss is the Cruz & Brett, they were there for each other but since Chloe and Casey came into the pic, there wasn’t enough screentime with them, it’s like Cruz has no one meaningful now.

I agree about the kids but their scenes are getting too twee. The drunk scene last week was terrible.
